Navigating the intricate relationships between cultural factors, entrepreneurship, and innovation remains a challenging task for scholars. While most of the existing research has a strong focus on national-level culture or regional-specific cultural peculiarities, this study explores the application of novel anthropological theory. The objective is to enrich our understanding of how social regulation and group integration can influence individual perspectives on entrepreneurship and innovation. This study draws inspiration from Joseph Schumpeter's idea of the entrepreneur as a deviant who disrupts social norms through entrepreneurial activities. PURPOSE: to understand the processes that homeless individuals experience when taking action to seek shelter and move into sheltered living conditions.

DESIGN: This Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) utilized a purposive homogeneous sample (n=9) of formerly homeless individuals. Inclusion criteria: experience of homelessness, >30 yrs. old, 2.5 yrs. living in supportive housing, English-speaking, and > 23 on the MMSE.

METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were analyzed through open-line coding, memo-ing, and data categorization to form themes.

RESULTS: The following superordinate themes emerged: path to homelessness, life on the streets, tipping point to sheltered lifestyle, connecting with lifelines, and life with Faith-based organization (FBO).

However, host genetic variation within genes that may play important roles in the viral integration process is understudied. Background: Several models and scores have been released to predict early mortality in patients undergoing surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). These scores included above all preoperative factors and they could be useful to deny surgical repair. The aim of the study was to evaluate intraoperative predictors of in-hospital mortality in patients undergoing open surgical repair (OSR) for a rAAA.

The risk of suicide-related behaviors rises during the transition from military to civilian life. A prior study demonstrated the ability to identify high-risk U.S. Army soldiers pre-transition through a machine learning model considering administrative data, self-reports, and geospatial info. This led to a collaboration between Veterans Affairs and the Army to assess a tailored suicide prevention intervention. To streamline targeting, researchers aimed to develop a concise risk calculator using self-report surveys. The refined model was tested on 8335 individuals from the Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers-Longitudinal Study (STARRS-LS), including baseline and post-service surveys. Chapter 2 introduces an innovative method integrating Geographic Information Systems and Machine Learning to evaluate educational policy outcomes. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional statistical methods and effectively analyzes complex relationships between educational data and demographic factors.

The study in Chapter 3 developed a prediction model for school report cards in New Mexico using census data and applying the methods described in Chapter 2. The accurate predictions suggested that the school accountability system disproportionately assigned failing grades to schools serving minoritized students. Offender reintegration (reentry) depends on offender motivation, public policies, community efforts, and resources provided through government and nonprofit sectors. As individuals are released from incarceration and reintegrate into the community, they are often dependent on resources provided by different service providers and the community. The role of the community is crucial as resources are oftentimes not accessible. Lack of employment and housing, mental health issues, substance abuse, and the inability to reestablish personal relationships diminish the prospects of successful reintegration and increase the chances of reincarceration. The heterogeneous vehicle routing problem with time windows (HVRPTW) employs various vehicles with different capacities to serve upcoming pickup and delivery orders. We introduce a HVRPTW variant for reflecting the practical needs of crowd-shipping by considering the mass-rapid-transit stations, as the additional terminal points. A mixed integer linear programming model is formulated. An Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search based meta-heuristic is also developed by utilizing a basic probabilistic selection strategy, i.e. roulette wheel, and Simulated Annealing. What Drives The Perceived Legitimacy Of Collaborative Governance? An Experimental Study, Seulki Lee, Marc Esteve

This study explores the perceived legitimacy of collaborative governance from a citizens’ perspective. We use a preregistered online survey experiment to test the effect of three factors—representation, performance information, and issue complexity—on the perceived legitimacy of a collaboration. Findings from 1,470 U.S. respondents show that representation and positive performance information influence citizens’ perceptions of collaborative governance legitimacy, while issue complexity has little impact. Additionally, heterogeneous treatment effects were found: respondents with low trust in public organizations factor representation more into their legitimacy perceptions of collaborative governance, while those with high trust in public organizations show little influence of representation.

In this multidisciplinary research project we aimed to study mobility challenges that refugees in Tucson, AZ, experience after their resettlement. Using qualitative and quantitative data collected from interviews and survey data, we argue that mobility shapes the ways refugees foster social connections, attain employment and access educational opportunities. Accordingly, barriers to mobility negatively impact refugees’ perception of well-being in post resettlement. However, these challenges are not experienced evenly. Nor are refugees passive subjects who lack agency in overcoming various barriers they experience.
