Adapting to the growing frequency of catastrophic wildfires in Greece and mitigating their effects is a complex socio-ecological problem. We used an online survey to query more than 100 engaged stakeholders who can potentially influence possible legislation and fire management organizational reform, emphasizing civil protection agencies and research entities. We focused the questionnaire on the importance of different wildfire effects to understand which were considered negative or unacceptable, indifferent, or positive. For fire prevention, we examined the range of acceptance and views on fuel management and fire use activities that are limited in extent or not allowed in Greece. We …

Effect Of Free Trade Agreements On Pharmaceutical Market Competition: The Case Of The 2009 Us-Peru Free Trade Agreement And Its Implementation As National Drug Policy, Lita Araujo, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez, Michael Montagne

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Free Trade Agreements (FTA) are controversial for threatening essential aspects of health, especially access to affordable medicines. The US-Peru FTA required changes in the Peruvian pharmaceutical legislation that resulted in the implementation of the National Drug Policy (NDP) of 2009. The NDP included more robust technical requirements for registration, a Peruvian Good Manufacturing Practices certificate, a longer timeline for drug registration, and an increase in registration fees. This study evaluated the impact of the FTA on the number of registrations and competition in the Peruvian pharmaceutical market.

Data for the period January 2005 to April 2014 were provided by the …

Resident Safety During Disasters: Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic In Hampton Roads Area Nursing Homes, Tihara Richardson

College of Business (Strome) Posters

The communal nature of long-term care facilities (LTCFs), and the population served which includes older adults often with underlying medical conditions, put those living in LTCFs at increased risk of infection and severe illness from COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has further illuminated gaps in LTCFs disaster preparedness as they have lacked the resources necessary to contain the outbreak, including tests and personal protective equipment, and underpaid and undertrained staff. The purpose of this research is to examine resident safety in nursing homes within the Hampton Roads region during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study seeks to examine the association between nursing …

The Evacuation Behaviors And Risk Perceptions Of College Students In Coastal Communities, Saige Hill, Wie Yusuf

College of Business (Strome) Posters

Effective emergency management saves lives. The role of an emergency manager is to implement policies and practices to ensure disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery to promote community resilience; however, there are many factors that may hinder goal achievement. The False Alarm and Desensitization Model explores this concept by illustrating how evacuation behaviors and risk perceptions are influenced by individual experiences. Specifically, the Model demonstrates how disaster event false alarms and desensitization decrease the likelihood of adequate response during subsequent events.

False alarms and desensitization impede disaster preparation and perpetuate community vulnerability. This research highlights the false alarm theory of …

Treaty Stories: Reclaiming The Unbroken History Of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Sovereignty, Margaret Huettl Apr 2021

Treaty Stories: Reclaiming The Unbroken History Of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Sovereignty, Margaret Huettl

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Ojibwe leaders negotiated treaties with the United States amid nineteenth-century encroachments on their territory. These treaties, which were more than tools of dispossession, enfolded and extended aadizookanag (sacred stories) in agreements that embodied Ojibwe relationships with land, language, sacred history, ceremony, and kin. Federal and state policy makers, fueled by the desire for Indian land and resources, attempted to unravel these relationships in the decades that followed. By continuing to live out through labor and stories their relationships with the woods, waters, and manoomin (wild rice) beds of Anishinaabewaki, the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibweg kept their treaties and their sovereignty …

The Effects Of Virtual Panopticism, Emma E. East

Selected Honors Theses

As technology further integrates into everyday life, the effects of technological advancement surface. The research contained in this thesis places philosopher Michel Foucault’s ideas of the panoptic, discipline, punishment and a carceral society in a virtual reality thus creating a virtual panopticon. Adapting Foucault’s theories to the present-day technological climate allows researchers to begin understanding the why behind humans’ interactions with various forms of technology (e.g. iPhone usage, Smart TVs, online banking, Alexa/Echo, etc.). Additionally, virtual panopticism sheds light on the corruption of those who manipulate information online to wield power, maintain control and make money. I discuss surveillance capitalism …

The Eviction Landscape In South Carolina, Ethan Magnuson

Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the South Carolinian eviction crisis from the perspective of radical geography. South Carolina was chosen for the severity of its crisis and the lack of research at a sub-state level. Court records of eviction filings from 2019 were geocoded and tested for spatial clustering, which was clearly visible. Plaintiff names were used to identify the most frequent filers and distinguish landlords by type. At the census tract level, eviction filing counts were compared with neighborhood characteristics using negative binomial regression, and most were found to be significant in South Carolina. …

Reinterpreted Europe: An Assessment Of Eu (In) Ability To Deal With Threats To The Rule Of Law, Huso Hasanovic

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The European Union has been the primary promoter of democracy and rule of law to its neighbors to the east. Much of the early scholarship as well as official documents on the EU’s transfer of norms to the east have shown some degree of optimism and expectation of serious reforms. Fast forward to its contemporary experience and the situation is significantly more grim than anticipated. Major think tanks like Freedom House, The Economist Democracy Index, and EU Venice Commission Reports show a stagnation and reversal on the question of rule of law, despite the millions of euros spent on anti-corruption …

Public Safety Agencies And Uav Technology: A Review Of Uses, Lacey L. Weynand

Student Publications

This study utilizes a systematic review of some of the scholarly literature available on drone usage within Southern California, specifically in Los Angeles and Chula Vista. I ask: how do public safety agencies use drone technology? The review will cover cases from existing scholarly literature, as well as policy reports and books from the Google Scholar database. A systematic review was the best methodology to begin fully investigating my research question, since the scope could have been so large that individual data points would have been difficult to find and instead requires a macro-level review. This data will provide a …
