Limited Cognitive Ability May Reduce Snap Participation Among Older Adults, Colleen Heflin, Dongmei Zuo, Gabriella Alphonso

Population Health Research Brief Series

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest food and nutrition assistance program in the U.S. For older adults currently on SNAP, meeting administrative requirements to remain on SNAP is difficult due to short recertification time frames, a lack of social support, and cognitive impairment. This brief summarizes results of a recent study examining the impact of cognitive decline on SNAP participation among adults aged 60 yrs. and older. Findings demonstrate that cognitive decline and living alone are associated with reduced SNAP participation, with older females being the most affected.

Aim: Adolescents in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing numerous developmental, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges including exposure to multidimensional violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) specifically intimate partner violence (IPV) are both highly prevalent in LMICs and are strongly linked with poor SRH outcomes. However, GBV and IPV interventions have not yet been adequately integrated in SRH due to individual, social, cultural, service, and resource barriers. Summary: Under-served and invisible communities have the characteristic of being historically left out of decision-making processes that affect them. They include rural communities, tribal communities, low-wealth communities, and marginalized communities. While engaging these communities, planners, academics, and government officials need to acknowledge and respect their priorities, needs, and capacity to participate. Researchers must acknowledge that some communities have good reasons to be skeptical of researchers, government officials, and outsiders. These communities may have been over-studied, but not on their own terms or in ways that benefited them. Summary. The discussion of research-practice collaborations to address equity through implementable, on-the-ground projects and programs converged around several interconnected themes that included: (1) prioritizing equity focus in defining and measuring projects’ success, (2) involving local communities in projects early on and through long-term monitoring, using interdisciplinary teams, and (3) incentivizing such projects through proper resourcing. Prioritizing equity in project measurement is only possible with the community’s involvement, and proper resourcing would ensure that community partners are resourced appropriately to support their resilience efforts.

Summary: Equity is increasingly becoming a consideration in resilience-focused policy. There is heightened interest in measuring how resilience policies, projects, and programs may impact equity. Equity may be advanced by a more inclusive policy process, well-developed communication channels, regular reference to the resilience research body of knowledge, and consultation with subject matter experts. There is need for increased clarity in the conceptual and operational definitions of equity, and consideration of the impact of resilience investments on a range of social and economic disparities.

Understanding these differences, and the socioeconomic characteristics that contribute to them, can have important implications for Medicare policies aimed at serving the age 85+ population. Objective: Patient selection for pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support has broadened over the years to include children with pre-existing neurologic morbidities. We aimed to determine the prevalence and nature of pre-ECMO neurologic disorders or disability and investigate the association between pre-ECMO neurologic disorders or disability and mortality and unfavorable neurologic outcome.

Design: Multicenter retrospective observational cohort study.

Despite the overall national decline in Kaposi sarcoma (KS) incidence in the United States among persons living with HIV, previous studies suggest there might be specific subgroups of the US population that are associated with higher KS incidence rates than others. Using the 2001-2018 National Program of Cancer Registries and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database, we assessed KS incidence trends among young men aged 20-34 years by race and ethnicity and geographic region. Background: Observations that peritoneal dialysis (PD) may be an effective, lower-cost alternative to hemodialysis for the treatment of ESKD have led to policies encouraging PD and subsequent increases in its use in the United States.

Methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis of Medicare beneficiaries who started dialysis between 2008 and 2015, we ascertained average annual expenditures (for up to 3 years after initiation of dialysis) for patients ≥67 years receiving in-center hemodialysis or PD. High-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) with rigorous supportive care is essential to the treatment of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). We describe the safety and tolerability of HD-MTX in patients with NHL treated at our center. In our cohort of 46 patients, the majority had at least one course of delayed clearance and/or creatinine elevation. Additionally, more than one-third of patients experienced an episode of grade ≥3 mucositis. Creatinine elevations and delayed clearance were independently associated with subsequent grade ≥3 mucositis. We advocate for greater availability of methotrexate monitoring to allow dose escalation of this essential modality around the world.

The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) has demonstrated efficacy for treating anxiety and depression. However, there are limited effectiveness data when conducted in real-world settings with diverse populations, including those with trauma. We evaluated treatment outcomes in a naturalistic, community setting among 279 adults who received UP following Hurricane Harvey. We examined change in overall clinical severity, depression and anxiety symptoms, functional impairment, and baseline outcome predictors (i.e., demographic characteristics, impact from Hurricane Harvey, co-occurrence of depression and anxiety symptoms). Objective: Misophonia is a complex disorder characterized by a heightened reaction to certain sounds and associated stimuli. While there is no uniformly accepted treatment to date, different intervention approaches are being investigated. Individual's perceptions of different misophonia treatment methods may affect compliance and satisfaction with treatment options. We sought to gather data on patient perceptions of currently available misophonia treatments.

Methods: Using an online survey, we collected data about treatment preferences, treatment usage, and diagnosis history from parents of children with misophonia (N = 141) and adults with misophonia (N = 252).

Background: In 2001, before the Affordable Care Act (ACA), some states expanded Medicaid coverage to include an array of mental health services, changing veterans' reliance on US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) services.

Methods: Using Medicaid and VA administrative data from 1999 to 2006, we used a difference-in-difference design to calculate shifts in veterans' reliance on the VA for depression care in New York and Arizona after the 2 states expanded Medicaid coverage to adults in 2001. Objective: To examine the treatment recommendation patterns among urologists and radiation oncologists, the level of concordance or discordance between physician recommendations, and the association between physician recommendations and the treatment that patients received.

Method: The study was a secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial conducted November 2010 to April 2014 (NCT02053389). Eligible participants were patients from the trial who saw both specialists. The primary outcome was physician recommendations that were scored using an adapted version of the validated PhyReCS coding system. Secondary outcomes included concordance between physician recommendations and the treatment patients received.

This paper investigates the impact of mass media education programs (MEP) on the adoption of security measures in the context of terrorism in Burkina Faso. We collected information using questionnaires and key informant interviews in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The results suggest that individuals who were educated on terrorism through MEP display higher intentions to adopt security measures and tend to have positive attitudes toward the role of media in fighting terrorism violence.
