One of the basic aims of the Spanish empire was to spread the Christian faith in its colonies. In the Philippines, this materialized with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and its subsequent colonization by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565. The regular clergies known as friars were responsible in imparting the Christian faith to the locals who absorbed the new faith wholly, albeit, preserving their traditional beliefs to a certain extent. Though Christianiation was successful, the secularization process whereby parishes were to be handed to the secular clergies was denied. This failure had a Jong lasting effect which …

Anti-Minority Riots In Unified Germany: Cultural Conflicts And Mischanneled Political Participation, Roger Karapin Jan 2002

Anti-Minority Riots In Unified Germany: Cultural Conflicts And Mischanneled Political Participation, Roger Karapin

Publications and Research

Anti-foreigner riots in eastern Germany in the early 1990s have usually been explained by ethnonationalism or racism, ethnic competition for scarce resources, and opportunistic political elites. If anti-minority riots are analyzed as a distinct phenomenon with a cross-sectional approach, local political processes emerge as more important causes. Cultural conflicts, the channeling of mobilization from nonviolent into violent forms, local political opportunities for success, and mobilization by social movement organizations convert ethnic conflict and violence into riots. A comparison of riot and non-riot localities in eastern Germany supports this argument.

Nationalism has several definitions culminating in the love for one's motherland. This becomes a reality when nationalists hasten the tides of nationalism thereby arousing the intelectuals and awakening the masses. All efforts and sacrifices amount to freeing the motherland from the chains of colonial bondage. The Philippines which was under Spanish domination since 1565 rises against its colonial masters to herald a free nation. The roles and aspirations of the nationalist leaders cannot be denied. They serve as instruments in uniting the intellectuals and the masses and are seen as the prime initiators in the road to revolutions. Jose Rizal, …

In attempting to trace the different phases of UMNO's organizational development, this study analyzes the party as a functioning structural subsystem. This is not to say that all party groups perform the same functions and possess identical structural properties. Social and political environmental conditions vary from one culture to the next. The same is true of "functional priorities". Parties are merely a particular structural response, therefore, to the needs of a social and political system in a particular milieu. This study is concerned with how UMNO has evolved and adapted with problems of rule enforcement, morale, task performance, productivity, regulatory …

Student Works (2000-2009)

This dissertation aims to study Kemal Ataturk' s vision and approach in building a modem Turkish civilization. Turkish civilization dates back to ancient history and has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties and their accompanying civilizations. One such civilization was the Ottoman Empire which ruled and dominated Turkey for nearly six centuries, till its collapse in the early 20th century. It represented a nation deeply steeped in religious values and traditions which towards the last century of its decline, sought unsuccessfully to incorporate western ideas of science and technology in an effort to strengthen itself against the encroaching …

Tolerating The Intolerable, Chandran Kukathas May 1999

Tolerating The Intolerable, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Presenting a lecture[1] on the virtue of toleration anywhere, let alone in the chambers of the Australian Senate department, should strike most people as a peculiarly pointless kind of exercise. Would anyone not in favour of toleration bother to turn up? (And what is the point of preaching to the converted? Would anyone against it bother to listen? And could such a person be converted?) In truth, it might not be easy to find anyone who openly professed intolerance. Almost everyone is in favour of tolerance; though of course, each will hasten to add, this does not mean that ‘anything …

The Politics Of Immigration Control In Britain And Germany: Subnational Politicians And Social Movements, Roger Karapin Jan 1999

The Politics Of Immigration Control In Britain And Germany: Subnational Politicians And Social Movements, Roger Karapin

Publications and Research

Political backlash against immigrant minorities and restrictive immigration policies have increased in western Europe. Most explanations of the adoption of restrictions on immigration have focused on ethnic competition for material resources and on national political factors. An alternative theory of political mobilization and restrictive policy changes argues that pressure from subnational politicians and social movement organizations and signals from dramatic anti-immigrant events such as riots lead national elites to infer that public interest in anti-immigration policies is intense enough to justify a break with liberal policies. This theory is tested against four cases in Britain and Germany, where the hypothesized …

Political Research In Martial Law Poland, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In early 1981, at the height of the Solidarity revolution, I was accepted by lREX to spend the spring 1982 semester in Warsaw for my project on the development of the workers' movement and the formation of Solidarity. My family and I were to fly to Poland just after Christmas of 1981. But on December 13, martial law was declared, and the Polish borders were sealed. I had taken a leave of absence from Butler University, and we had already rented out our house, so we were stranded.

Turnout And Partisanship In Tennessee Elections, Lillard E. Richardson Jr., Grant W. Neeley Jan 1998

Turnout And Partisanship In Tennessee Elections, Lillard E. Richardson Jr., Grant W. Neeley

Political Science Faculty Publications

To understand the forces shaping current Tennessee politics, we discuss two fundamental concepts of Tennessee's electoral system: voting turnout and partisanship. These two concepts are easily illustrated by two questions. First, how many people participate in elections in the state? Second, whom do Tennesseans elect to represent them? While we use a historical perspective to inform the analysis, we are generally more interested in the forces shaping politics in Tennessee today.

Early Voting In Tennessee: Removing Barriers To Participation, Grant W. Neeley, Lillard E. Richardson Jr. Jan 1998

Early Voting In Tennessee: Removing Barriers To Participation, Grant W. Neeley, Lillard E. Richardson Jr.

Political Science Faculty Publications

In 1994. the Tennessee General Assembly mandated a new early voting system that allowed voters to cast a ballot in a two-week period prior to any election. Unlike absentee balloting, which requires registrants to justify why they cannot participate on election day, early voting is available to any registered voter who chooses to do so.

By enacting early voting in Tennessee, the state legislature hoped to achieve increased turnout and easier access for citizens unable to vote at a regular polling site on election day. The purpose of this chapter is to ascertain whether the program was able to increase …

Trends In Public Opinion, 1989-1996, John M. Scheb Ii, William Lyons, Grant W. Neeley

Political Science Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we examine the party identifications and ideological orientations of Tennesseans from 1989 through 1996, as revealed through survey research. We also look at Tennesseans' positions on several issues of public policy that have been salient in state politics during this period. Our intent is to isolate any trends in the partisan and ideological character of the state while examining citizens' positions on key issues.

Radical-Right And Neo-Fascist Political Parties In Western Europe, Roger Karapin Jan 1998

Radical-Right And Neo-Fascist Political Parties In Western Europe, Roger Karapin

Publications and Research

Far right-wing parties have gained dramatically in many West European countries since the early 1980s. Recent cross-national studies distinguish between neo-fascist parties, which are anti-democratic and anti-capitalist, and radical right-wing parties which combine anti-immigration appeals with pro-capitalist, neo-liberal economic positions, social conservatism, and a basic acceptance of representative democracy. While the former have been stagnant and unimportant, the latter have been gaining. Yet there are also borderline cases where it is more difficult to determine whether the party rejects fascism and accepts democracy, a problem which the theoretical literature has neglected. The far right's success is largely due to the …

Liberalism And Multiculturalism: The Politics Of Indifference, Chandran Kukathas Jan 1998

Liberalism And Multiculturalism: The Politics Of Indifference, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In modern societies, particularly the societies of the liberal democratic West, cultural diversity poses a challenge not only to the makers of government policy, but also to the philosopher looking to understand how it might be possible-in principle-for people of different ways to live together. The challenge is posed because society's institutions have been challenged, as the members of different groups have demanded "recognition." They have demanded not simply recognition of their claims to a (just) share of the social pie but, more important, recognition of their distinct identities as members of particular cultural communities within society. The persistence and, …

Integration With Global Financial Markets And Domestic Political Reform: Comparing Poland And Turkey, Birol A. Yeşilada, Janusz Puzniak, Ahmet Sozen

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is about the political economy of policy reform in contemporary Poland and Turkey. It focuses on the period of 1980-97 in Turkey and 1989-97 in Poland during which the economies of these countries underwent significant structural changes and became integrated with global financial markets with the rise of the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 1991 and the Istanbul Stock Exchange in 1986.

The first part of the paper provides an overview of the contending theoretical perspectives on "Phoenix risen" and on how external and domestic economic factors influence domestic political reforms in countries where integration with international financial markets …

The Middle Class: Increasingly Fond Memories Of A Grim Past, David S. Mason Mar 1997

The Middle Class: Increasingly Fond Memories Of A Grim Past, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Despite seemingly successful reforms in many post-communist countries, increasing numbers of people have been sliding from the middle class into poverty. Nostalgia for the late communist era is on the rise, and a new study warns that the perceived levels of social and economic decline surpass the actual ones-- which could spell trouble for the reformers.
