Political Barriers And The Transmission Of Monetary Policy Across States: The New England Antebellum Banking Market, Andrew J. Economopoulos Oct 2003

Political Barriers And The Transmission Of Monetary Policy Across States: The New England Antebellum Banking Market, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

The New England antebellum banking market was examined to understand the interaction of political ideology and economic forces. With each state controlling bank entry, hence the money supply, political ideology could impede the supply of money within a state. However, the monetary forces from neighboring states may have influenced the degree to which parties held true to their political ideology. The results indicate that political ideology was an effective barrier in two of the six states, while three states were responsive to neighbor states' monetary policy regardless of political ideology. These states responded by creating new banks, raising existing capital …

Responsibility For Past Injustice: How To Shift The Burden, Chandran Kukathas Jun 2003

Responsibility For Past Injustice: How To Shift The Burden, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article considers the question of the responsibility of present generations for injustices committed by previous ones. It asks whether the descendants of victims of past injustice have claims against the descendants of the perpetrators of injustice. Two modes of argument are examined: the individual responsibility approach, according to which descendants cannot have claims against other descendants, and the collective responsibility approach, according to which descendants do have strong claims. Both approaches are criticized, but for different failings. An alternative view, building on the individualist approach, is defended. This view argues that some people may have to bear responsibility for …

Party Positions Or Party Direction?, Riccardo Pelizzo Apr 2003

Party Positions Or Party Direction?, Riccardo Pelizzo

riccardo pelizzo

The use .f the party manifesto data (PMD) to identqy parties’ position in the political space provida a rather distorted picture of the Italian party syJlern. Three possible explanations fbr this are explored, namely that the Italian party system is exceptional, that there are jlaws in [he data and there might be flaws in the methodology. The article argues that none of these explanations is jully satisJuctory and advances the hypothesis that the PMD left-right scores do not indicate parties’ posilions but instead indicate parties’ direction, that is how (and how much) parlies move to adjusl to changing political conditions …

Os Autores E Suas Idéias: Um Estudo Sobre A Elite Intelectual E O Discurso Político Do Estado Novo, Adriano Codato, Walter Guandalini, Jr.

Adriano Codato

This paper is an analysis of Estado Novo´s political ideology, through the study of the magazine Cultura Política: revista mensal de estudos brasileiros, government s official periodic. After having read selected articles, concerning the political organization instituted in Brazil by the Golpe de 37, it was possible to examine intellectuals rationalizations for the building of a strong and centralized national state in Brazil. At the end we could verify the role played by the magazine on the authoritarian regime, realize the burocracy s importance as producers of this ideological discourse, and distinguish some of its characteristics.

The Transformation Of The Greek Party System Since 1951, Takis S. Pappas Jan 2003

The Transformation Of The Greek Party System Since 1951, Takis S. Pappas

Takis S Pappas

This study is about party-system change in modern Greece and has two chief aims. First, it seeks to make sense of and explain the evolution of that country’s party system from its early post-war years until today. Far from being ‘frozen’, the Greek party system has displayed continuous transformations from a system featuring significant party fragmentation into another characterised by the high concentration of its political forces. Second, the paper proposes a classification of the changes that took place during the development of the Greek party system. This classification will yield three distinct types of party system which developed in …

La Educación Superior En El Mercado. Configuraciones Emergentes Y Nuevos Proveedores, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

This chapter is comprised of four sections. The first considers the characteristics of “knowledge society” and the educational changes that developing countries must undertake if they are ever to close the gap with the industrialized world. The next section assesses secondary edu-cation in Mexico, and the third examines the higher educational system. The final part offers a series of reflections on the tendencies that we are now witnessing, outlining the changes that are required to achieve better articulation between middle and higher education policy and Mexico’s options for growth and development in the near future.

Regional Integration And Domestic Institutional Homogeneity: A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Integration In The Americas, Pacific Asia, And Western Europe, Yi Feng, Gaspare M. Genna Jan 2003

Regional Integration And Domestic Institutional Homogeneity: A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Integration In The Americas, Pacific Asia, And Western Europe, Yi Feng, Gaspare M. Genna

Gaspare M Genna

This work argues that the formation of an economic union requires that the homogeneity of domestic economic institutions and the process of regional integration reinforce each other. Granger causality tests on four cases of regional integration in the Americas, Asia and Europe(1975 through 1995)confirm our thesis. These cases include the Andean Pact, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Central American Common Market and the European Union. The most successful case of integration - the European Union - does evince a pattern of positive interaction between the two variables, while less successful cases, found in Latin America, are lacking in this …

Feminist Tigers And Patriarchal Lions: Rhetorical Strategies And Instrument Effects In The Struggle For Definition And Control Over Development In Nepal, Coralynn V. Davis Jan 2003

Feminist Tigers And Patriarchal Lions: Rhetorical Strategies And Instrument Effects In The Struggle For Definition And Control Over Development In Nepal, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

This article offers an analysis of a struggle for control of a women’s development project in Nepal. The story of this struggle is worth telling, for it is rife with the gender politics and neo-colonial context that underscore much of what goes on in contemporary Nepal. In particular, my analysis helps to unravel some of the powerful discourses, threads of interest, and yet unintended effects inevitable under a regime of development aid. The analysis demonstrates that the employment of already available discursive figures of the imperialist feminist and the patriarchal third world man are central to the rhetorical strategies taken …

Corporatist Features Of The Security Sector In Democratizing Countries: A Cross-Regional Analysis Of Brazil And Romania, Sebastian Huluban Jan 2003

Corporatist Features Of The Security Sector In Democratizing Countries: A Cross-Regional Analysis Of Brazil And Romania, Sebastian Huluban

Masters Theses

The topic of the thesis is to analyse, from a cross-regional comparative perspective, the relationship between the corporatist features and the civil-military relations in two democratising countries, Romania and Brazil. I choose Romania and Brazil because these two countries present peculiar features regarding the civil-military relations within their regions, and, in addition, these countries share a peculiar heritage regarding the corporatist arrangements both in terms of intellectual-cultural legacy and contingent decisions. The paper encompasses a double attempt as an answer to the current appeals within the civil-military relations literature for new analytical perspectives. First, I will show that the corporatist …

The Secession Reference And The Limits Of Law, Richard Kay Dec 2002

The Secession Reference And The Limits Of Law, Richard Kay

Richard Kay

When the Supreme Court of Canada issued its judgment on the legality of "unilateral" Quebec secession in August 1998 many Canadians did not know what to make of it. The Court held that the only lawful way in which Quebec might depart the Canadian federation was through one of the amendment mechanisms provided in the Constitution Act 1982. It thus affirmed that Quebec could not secede without the agreement of at least the Houses of the federal Parliament and some number of provincial legislative assemblies. Prime Minister Chretien declared the next day that the judgement was a "victory for all …

Eu Accession And A New Populist Center-Periphery Cleavage In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde Dec 2002

Eu Accession And A New Populist Center-Periphery Cleavage In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

The finalized “Return to Europe” of the new EU members states of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has created a whole new ballgame for Eurosceptic political actors. In rational choice terms, the costs of Euroscepticism (and even Eurorejection) have gone down dramatically, while the benefits will most probably go even further up. While the effects of EU accession on the party systems of CEE are multifold, this paper develops one possible effect: the transformation of the already present regional divide within CEE countries into a populist, anti-EU center-periphery cleavage.

Rethinking Civil Society, Cas Mudde Dec 2002

Rethinking Civil Society, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Most studies of civil society are mainly normative, both in their conceptualization and in their theoretical assumptions. We suggest a new, or better revised, research agenda of the study of civil society, which should include (at least) these four points. First, the concept of civil society should be seen as a heuristic device. Second, the separation between ‘civil society’ and ‘uncivil society’ makes sense only in a normative framework, and then exclusively with uncivil society defined as a sub-set of civil society. Third, empirical research on civil society should study the nature of the relationship between civil society organizations and …
