Strategies For Responding To Inequity: A Conversation With Black Leadership, Gerald B. Moore

Sponsored by the Roundtable for African American Concerns (RAAC) of the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA), this session featured African American representation from various levels of Charleston County Public Library management. Each panelist discussed their experiences of racial inequity (Individual, Institutional, and Structural), finding and being advocates, coping and self-care methods, and positive outcomes. Panelists also offered strategies and solutions for handling inequity. The article discusses what was the catalyst leading to the deliberate, purposeful efforts of Charleston County Public Library to include Equity as one of the core principles in its Strategic Vision for 2021-2024.

The discovery of a rare 19th-century binder mark launched this investigation of South Carolina bookbinder Thomas Jefferson LaMotte (1830-1911). This article will discuss his bookbinding practice and newspaper career, Civil War experiences, and civic roles. LaMotte’s biography will develop a fresh framework for future research of South Carolina book arts. Included in the appendix is a new roster of 44 Columbia bookbinders--including 10 women--active from 1859 to 1911.

Interpersonal conflicts occur across all relationships at all levels. Unresolved interpersonal conflicts can lead to bullying, which has been under continued exploration in the workplace since the 1990s (Keashly & Neumann, 2010). The longer someone is employed at an institution, the more time they will have to experience interpersonal conflict in their work relationships. This study uses Harvey, Blouin, & Stout’s (2006) Interpersonal Conflict Scale to examine the relationship between duration of employment and the level of interpersonal conflict experienced by South Carolina academic librarians. Since the early 1990s, the term Open Access has been synonymous with the principle of publishing the scientific results of taxpayer-funded research at low cost and making them available to the public free of charge. i. With Covid-19 came the onset of social distancing, closed campuses, and limited open hours in physical libraries. Instruction librarians shifted to online instruction and had to modify the traditional way of teaching. In face-to-face settings it is easy to read the room. For example, a blank stare usually indicates that the student has “left the room” mentally. A quantitative survey of faculty perceptions of Open Access (OA)

publishing was conducted at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), a

small liberal arts style University in the United Arab Emirates.

The survey aimed to assess faculty perceptions of the credibility and

quality of OA publishing. We were curious to discover the range of

interpretations and understanding of OA amongst our faculty members

The Library Research Scholars program pairs librarian faculty mentors with undergraduates on a yearlong journey of engaging with research and creating an intellectual product on a topic of their own devising. In March 2020, many libraries transitioned from onsite to remote work in an “abundance of caution” due to the coronavirus pandemic. Almost overnight, the varied interactions previously occurring across classrooms, conference rooms, offices, staff lounges, and cafes transformed into endless Zoom sessions. Many library employees consequently noted feeling greater stress, fatigue, and burnout, the latter of which is characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, alienation from work activities, and reduced job performance. We measured how burnout related to affect, personality, job satisfaction, and various characteristics among library employees during this transition to remote work.

A letter written to the National Library of Medicine addressing concerns regarding the problematic medical subject heading, "Blacks", other problematic terms, and the process by which they are selected. The letter concludes with recommendations for improvement by the authors and endorsed by several hundred signatories. In total, the letter was signed by 726 library workers from around the world and sent by email to National Library of Medicine representatives on Friday, June 10th, 2022. Heritage experts working in Qatar contend that international museum standards do not allow them to engage with local understandings of history and heritage, thereby acknowledging the disconnect between museums and Qatari collective memory. In April 2020, the University at Albany was commissioned to study the factors causing disproportionate harm from COVID-19 for New York Latinx and Black individuals. Thirty-five interdisciplinary UAlbany Engaged Researchers partnered with colleagues and community organizations to research solutions to these disparities.

The UAlbany Libraries’ Scholarly Communication Team recognized the opportunity to collect, preserve, and distribute this Minority Health Disparities (MHD) project’s assets from the University’s repository, Scholars Archive.

This study examined Wikipedia edit-a-thon programme in a University Library in Nigeria. It adopted the descriptive design. Unstructured questionnaire and interview were used for data collection. A total of 25 people participated in the study. These are the University Librarian and two female deputy University Librarians, four library staff that serve as facilitators and eighteen participants of the edit-a-thon project. Interview was conducted with the University Librarian and her two deputies while the rest responded to an unstructured questionnaire. Data gathered were analysed using frequency counts and narrative. Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd

Approximately 15% of Binghamton University Libraries' 28,000 musical scores are collections of scores comprising a composer's complete works. Ideally, these large, multipart, non-circulating collections are cataloged consistently with either comprehensive records for each set, or individual records for each score within the set. Our catalog is inconsistent in this approach and requires remediation. The resulting workflow maximizes flexibility in who participates, where, and when, by siloing the portion of the work requiring data processing and advanced music cataloging skills.
