Ever wonder how the grades you assign impact student learning? Research has shown that traditional grading scales often negatively impact student learning by encouraging students to value the grade over the learning process and by disadvantaging students who come to the classroom with less knowledge of or experience with course content. This workshop explores the practice of ungrading, an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of strategies and practices including specifications grading, contract grading, and mastery-based grading. Discover how librarians can organize and deliver faculty development in a virtual setting. The Virtual Information Literacy Library Atelier (VILLA) program includes designing inclusive assignments for foundational visual media arts courses using the new ACRL Framework for Visual Literacy in Higher Education, co-creating library interventions with faculty, and assessing impact on student learning. Presenters will show how this program came to be, the curriculum development process, assessment data, and lessons learned. Presenters will also illustrate the challenges and opportunities of designing a virtual learning experience as a remote team with changing membership and the ongoing sustainability of the program.

Student-centered pedagogy is “an instructional approach in which students influence the content, activities, materials, and the pace of learning” (Collins & O'Brien, 2003, pp. 338-339). The constructs of student-centered pedagogy include voice, choice, competency-based progression, and the instructor’s continuous check-ins to track their students’ wants and needs (Green & Harrington; 2020; Harrington & DeBruler, 2019). This poster presentation will focus on the author’s incorporation of voice and choice into the design of an LIS 1001 Introductory undergraduate online library research course.

The modern workplace is a transdisciplinary, information-rich environment, and this makes information literacy skills vital for students. With this grant funded project, we are developing, piloting, assessing, and promoting a suite of micro-learning modules for undergraduate engineering, technology, and business students at a large, public university. The modules revolve around information literacy topics relevant to the workplace, integrated into a scalable micro-credentialing platform. The topics covered include (1) effective information gathering strategies, (2) competitive analysis, (3) patent information, (4) industry standards, and (5) informed communication. This talk will consider the marginalization of scholars and other stakeholders in the Global South and how local publishing infrastructure is critical to recalibrating imbalances. The Latin American ethos and practice of bibliodiversity, or scholarly self-determination, is a precondition for the decolonialization of knowledge. Accordingly, predatory publishing is minimal in Latin America which has its own publishing infrastructures. Library publishing, which supports bibliodiversity, represents an important path towards much needed free to authors or diamond open access. Librarians play a critical role in educating editors and fostering publishing best practices.

Get ready for new ideas for how to incorporate critical information literacy into your asynchronous online instruction! It’s time to go beyond teaching simply how to find, use, evaluate, and cite information to explore the social construction and political dimensions of information. Digital learning objects (DLOs) such as videos, interactive tutorials, and online modules are a great way to expand on these information literacy concepts. This content analysis of publicly available DLOs in open repositories reports on what information literacy topics librarians are currently teaching and highlights exemplary DLOs that cover concepts related to critical information literacy.

The literature suggests that information users beyond the academy rely on a variety of sources in the course of their work, most of which can be described as grey literature. Learn how librarians developed a programmatic assessment schedule for their undergraduate, peer-to-peer research consultant service with an emphasis on practicality and sustainability. This poster and its supplementary materials present the finished plan, which addresses 13 programmatic learning outcomes over the course of six semesters, offering one model for how to approach a large-scale assessment project systematically and intentionally without burning out library staff.

This paper details the development and rollout of Esploro by Ex Libris (locally branded Scholarship@Miami), the Institutional Repository (IR), and the RIM system for the University of Miami (UM). The library's first residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated leading recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The residency search committee chair, one of the successful residency candidates, and a tenure-track faculty hired using the new approach team up to dissect the hiring process from their perspectives. Librarians from four different institutions of higher learning partnered to create a survey to ascertain student attitudes towards eBook use in academic libraries as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey results have revealed students experienced greater exposure to eBooks in their academic programs as a result of remote learning during the pandemic. Additional student responses will help librarians determine what kinds of investment should be made in eBook collections going forward, and what kinds of support can be provided to enhance academic eBooks experiences.

Objective – The University of New Hampshire (UNH) Library conducted an exploratory study of the pedagogical practices of social science instructors at UNH who teach using quantitative data in undergraduate courses. This study is connected to a suite of parallel studies at other higher education institutions that was designed and coordinated by Ithaka S+R.
