Strategic Searching And Source Evaluation: Active Learning Teaching Materials, Tricia Martone, Abigail Murdy, Alexis Gomez

Dartmouth Library Workshops and Presentations

During the Librarians Active Learning Institute (LALI) 2024, Alexis Gomez, Tricia Martone, and Abigail Murdy developed a 50-minute active learning session for a fictional environmental studies class needing to write a research paper on a topic of their choice using peer reviewed articles. The bulk of the active learning session was encompassed in the two handouts, which are a jigsaw for Web of Science (20 minutes) and a modified Send-A-Problem (Send Along) activity (20 minutes). Sustainable Curation: Preserving The Furious Flower Poetry Center Conference Recordings, Layne Carpenter, Bodeene Amyot Cairdeas

Libraries

JMU Libraries has partnered with the Furious Flower Poetry Center to preserve and provide public access to the decennial Furious Flower Conference recordings. These video recordings feature prominent black poets who participated in the 1994, 2004, and 2014 conferences and will include footage from the upcoming 2024 conference. In support of this work, our team integrated ArchivesSpace, Preservica, and Aviary to steward, curate, and preserve the collection. The integration, which requires cross-departmental collaboration, allows us to harmonize metadata with ArchivesSpace as the system of record. Washington and Lee University School of Law has the distinct honor of housing the archives of Virginia lawyer and Supreme Court of the United States Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. he mission of the Powell Archives is to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to the rare and unique materials held by the Wilbur C. Hall Law Library. Virginia attorneys have access to the Powell Archives and Special Collections, a valuable resource for legal research and exploration.

Deconstructing Ai Literacy For Librarians, Samantha Seah

In this presentation, Samantha shares ways we can think about AI literacy - how it is similar and dissimilar from traditional information literacy, what we need to know about the mechanics of AI tools, and how SMU Libraries support the different users within the university in navigating the issues around artificial intelligence.

Archives Outside: Bringing Daylight To Storage And Storytelling, Bethany Fiechter, Carol Street

Library Faculty publications

This poster focuses on two unusual archival initiatives undertaken by archivists at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. At DePauw, an archivist and restorer preserved and relocated two headstones found buried in the archive's backlog. At Kentucky, an undergraduate research visit to an African American cemetery powerfully contributed to student learning and created community connections.

Georgia Public Library Service offers professional development for public library staff to enable them to use the latest technology, learn new skills, and strengthen their ability to meet local community needs. It’s one way that GPLS empowers libraries to improve the lives of all Georgians. So far in 2024, GPLS has hosted two conferences, each uniquely designed to help staff who work in different areas of libraries.

Georgia Tech Library Reaches Out In Native Languages, Jason D. Wright

The Georgia Tech Library recently launched a series of multi-language welcome videos for students and faculty. The videos, which are available in French, Arabic, Mandarin, Korean, Hindi, Tamil, Spanish and English, are available 24 hours a day on the Library’s YouTube page. They were produced completely in-house using native speakers in the Library and across the Institute.

This article describes a Mental Health Awareness Day event hosted by the Dorothy W. Hightower Collaborative Learning Center & Library at Gordon State College (GSC) during Mental Health Awareness Month. The purpose of the event was to help alleviate stress for the GSC college community during the final exam period by providing mental health resources and low-stress activities participants.

Introduction: This article explores faculty conceptions of academic publishers, their willingness to circumvent paywalls and share content, and their understanding of who holds the responsibility to pay for this body of scholarly work to which they all contribute.

Methods: The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 faculty at their Carnegie R2 university to explore scholars’ perspectives with respect to the costs of serials and the responsibilities of the University and library in support of scholarly publishing.

Results: Participants reported a broad spectrum of perspectives with respect to circumventing publisher paywalls and offered nuanced practices for interacting with paywalled content. They …

Assessment and Advocacy: Using Project Outcome for Academic Libraries is a collection of case studies to mark the fifth’s anniversary of Project Outcome and share how various institutions have utilized the toolkit to improve their services. This chapter provides details on a cross-institutional study conducted at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and Seminole State College of Florida, the second largest feeder school of transfer students to UCF. During the Spring 2022 semester, students in English composition II courses are both institutions completed the Project Outcome immediate instruction survey. Archiving Living Historical Narratives With Youth Participatory Action Research, Leah Panther, Elizabeth Burbridge, Robbie Barber, Rosi Sanchez

As part of an interdisciplinary place-based summer program, the three adults and nine youth explored local communities as a co-researchers, seeking to preserve and sustain their community’s literacies, histories, and stories. Youth co-researchers led the data collection, analysis, and creation of archival resources to capture community literacies, histories, and stories that expanded beyond traditional print-centric resources and archival collections management systems. From our youth co-researchers we learned: (1) prioritizing people as archival sources, (2) living historical narratives lead to critical readings of historical artifacts, and (3) public digital composing practices with historical narratives and historical artifacts.
