Presence And Use Of Designated Charging Stations For Electronic Devices In Academic Libraries: An Exploratory Study, Lesley K. Mackie Jul 2017

Presence And Use Of Designated Charging Stations For Electronic Devices In Academic Libraries: An Exploratory Study, Lesley K. Mackie

Georgia Library Quarterly

This article reports the results of an exploratory survey of academic librarians, to determine the presence and use of charging stations for electronic devices. Of particular interest were the institutions that provide and/or require their students to have electronic devices. Results show that institutions without charging stations have identified them as a need, and institutions with charging stations see them as effective. Overall, this article highlights that, at the time of the survey, there was a disparity between users’ needs and institutional resources as few institutions were addressing students’ battery power needs in regards to electronic devices. Conducted in 2013, …

Bringing Stories To Life By Sharing Archival Material, Christina M. Noto Jul 2017

Bringing Stories To Life By Sharing Archival Material, Christina M. Noto

Student Publications

Last summer I researched the experiences of women at Gettysburg College during the pivotal decade 1965-1975 with the support of a college grant, the Koble Fellowship, a ten-week humanities based faculty-mentored research project. I tracked women's experiences at the college during this period and designed a digital scholarship project to share their stories. As a history major and as a feminist, a project about the history of women and their activism on campus nicely complemented by interests. (excerpt)

Book Review: Digital Rights Management: The Librarian's Guide, Yumi Ohira

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, the dramatic proliferation of technologies in the expanding digital world has transformed the way we operate and interact with various forms of information. Enhanced access to digital information has empowered both individuals and libraries. People have gained access to such digital media as streaming audio and video, DVDs, e-books, e-journals, research subscription databases, websites, and other sources of digital information. This enhanced access has enabled libraries to deliver more effective and scalable services for their users in the digital environment. These digital movements and technological advances, including a drastic increase of Web-based tools, make sharing information …

Remotivating The Black Vote: The Effect Of Low-Quality Information On Black Voters In The 2016 Presidential Election And How Librarians Can Intervene, Andrew P. Jackson, Denyvetta Davis, James Kelly Alston

Publications and Research

In a phenomenon that was surprising to many, given the racially charged nature of the 2016 presidential election, black voter turnout was significantly lower than the previous two elections. Donald Trump’s victory is attributable to many factors, one of which was the lower participation of black voters in several swing states. To a lesser extent, black support for third-party candidates also aided Trump’s victory. The lower black turnout itself is attributable to several factors, but one factor specifically in the LIS realm was the prevalence of low-quality information and rhetoric and a susceptibility that some black voters had to this …

From Service To Synergy: Embedding Librarians In A Digital Humanities Project, Janet Hauck

Library Faculty Scholarship

Definitions of the term digital humanities vary, and its place in the academic library is still being explored. Yet exploration is indeed taking place, at large research institutions as well as, increasingly, at smaller colleges and undergraduate libraries. This article details an innovative digital humanities project carried out at an institution of 2,300 undergraduates, where a creative institutional partnership was the key to its success. The project has provided an outstanding opportunity to address the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, while embracing the growing trend on many campuses to showcase student research.
