We've Got A Guide For That: Building A Comprehensive Marketing And Support Framework For Institutional Repository Services, Jeffrey M. Mortimore
We've Got A Guide For That: Building A Comprehensive Marketing And Support Framework For Institutional Repository Services, Jeffrey M. Mortimore
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Institutional Repository services require continuous, multi-channel promotion and support to attract and retain conferences, journals, and other campus collections. However, given the relative complexity of the services offered, balancing promotional messaging with a clear representation of repository offerings, policies, and procedures can be a challenge. Providing a flexible but robust marketing and support framework is especially important for institutions that rely on non-repository public services personnel to provide front-line promotion of repository services to faculty and administrators.
During this session, we will look at Georgia Southern University's recently-developed Institutional Repository Services LibGuide as a model for providing such a framework …
How Green Is Our Valley?: Five-Year Study Of Selected Lis Journals From Taylor & Francis For Green Deposit Of Articles, Jill Emery
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
This study reviews content from five different library and information science journals: Behavioral & Social Sciences Librarian, Collection Management, College & Undergraduate Libraries, Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship and Journal of Library Administration over a five-year period from 2012–2016 to investigate the green deposit rate. Starting in 2011, Taylor & Francis, the publisher of these journals, waived the green deposit embargo for library and information science, heritage and archival content, which allows for immediate deposit of articles in these fields. The review looks at research articles and standing columns over the five years from these five journals to see if …

Every other year, the ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee produces a document on top trends in higher education as they relate to academic librarianship. Topics in this edition of ACRL Top Trends will be familiar to some readers who will hopefully learn of new materials to expand their knowledge. Other readers will be made aware of trends that are outside of their experience. This is the nature of trends in our current technological and educational environments: change is continual, but it affects different libraries at different rates. The 2018 top trends share several overarching themes, including the impact of …

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Lessons Learned From Systematic Review Research Projects, Wei Zakharov, Amy Van Epps, Judith Nixon
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Lessons Learned From Systematic Review Research Projects, Wei Zakharov, Amy Van Epps, Judith Nixon
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
A systematic literature review is an analysis of existing research using a methodical and explicit process to identify, select, and critically appraise relevant studies and collect and analyze data from them. This type of review aims to address research questions by integrating the findings of all relevant and high-quality studies. This session demonstrates the application of the systematic literature review methodology in STEM disciplines such as aviation and engineering education. Participants also learn about the various roles of librarians in such studies, the scholarly publishing rights regarding co-authorship, and how to work with researchers (collaborators and reviewers) who have limited …

Librarians at Purdue University seek to develop engineering graduates who are effective information users. Similarly, information specialists at Caterpillar Inc. are concerned with how well new hires are prepared for the information landscape at work as practicing engineers. Librarians from Purdue University and Caterpillar partnered to create and disseminate a survey to compare how students and practicing engineers seek and use information in the research process. Within a framework that asked survey participants to think about information use in a recently completed project, responses highlighted several gaps in information literacy training, including the use of external standards and internal document …
Academic Libraries Support Cross-Disciplinary Innovation And Entrepreneurship, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Margaret Phillips
Academic Libraries Support Cross-Disciplinary Innovation And Entrepreneurship, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Margaret Phillips
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Supporting innovation is essential in today’s academic ecosystem, and libraries are well-positioned to connect prospective entrepreneurs with the myriad resources and services available. Libraries are able to leverage pre-existing collaborations and partnerships with groups both inside and outside the university (from local community groups to international level organizations); libraries’ status as information brokers across disciplinary boundaries also enables them to make new connections with a wide array of potential stakeholders. Librarians from different subject specialties will share experiences and discuss ways in which libraries can support global entrepreneurship efforts by university faculty, staff, and students, as well as the general …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The current ways in which documents are made freely accessible in the Web no longer adhere to the models established Budapest/Bethesda/Berlin (BBB) definitions of Open Access (OA). Since those definitions were established, OA-related terminology has expanded, trying to keep up with all the variants of OA publishing that are out there. However, the inconsistent and arbitrary terminology that is being used to refer to these variants are complicating communication about OA-related issues. This study intends to initiate a discussion on this issue, by proposing a conceptual model of OA. Our model features six different dimensions (authoritativeness, user rights, stability, immediacy, …
Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards
Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Institutions that want to ensure the consistency of names across submissions to their Digital Commons repository, especially for self-submitted submissions, must develop their own methods for …

For librarians today, reaching and meeting the needs of students and faculty can be both challenging and rewarding. Libraries face budget cuts, rapidly evolving and diverse technology, and a continued misconception of the image of the library and its purpose. However, librarians must persevere through these and other difficulties to provide useful resources and services and to ensure students and faculty know these tools are available. Different avenues for attaining this goal are available for research in the literature; however, the focus for this annotated bibliography is the avenue of collaboration. The Association of College & Research Libraries (2011) stated …

Faculty Expectations Of A University Library And Writing Center In Preventing Plagiarism
Faculty Expectations Of A University Library And Writing Center In Preventing Plagiarism
The Southeastern Librarian
Like many educational institutions, the University of South Alabama has seen a recent uptick in academic misconduct, especially plagiarism. To better understand and work toward solving this issue, the University’s Library and Writing Center conducted a survey of faculty across disciplines. The survey elicits part-time and full-time faculty perspectives on the Library and Writing Center’s roles in providing information literacy instruction and preventing plagiarism. Libraries and writing centers are uniquely situated to assist with preventing plagiarism. For example, academic libraries adhere to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, the tenets of which emphasize information literacy and understanding …
