Archival Newsletter Collection

The Smithsonian Institute has borrowed Xavier University of Louisiana Library’s photograph of Mrs. Margaret James Washington for an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Mrs. Washington was an anti-lynching activist in the late 1800s and the first “lady principal” at what is today Tuskegee University. The exhibit, “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence,” will reveal the women and organizations often overlooked in the complex narrative of women’s suffrage.

The presentation will show how the Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries play a part in the research publications system and how it showcases SMU publications and also provides the full text where possible in the SMU repository called InK. Some examples of how the information is used and what faculty think about having their publications in InK will be shared. The Library is also involved in providing publications metrics.

The Future Is A Moving Goal Post: Change Management In Academic Libraries, Gulcin Cribb Apr 2019

The Future Is A Moving Goal Post: Change Management In Academic Libraries, Gulcin Cribb

Research Collection Library

Libraries and librarians have been going through major changes in recent times. Advocacy, marketing, promotion, communication, outreach, engagement, innovation, creation and demonstration of value for the stakeholders have never been more critical and urgent.

What are the reasons and drivers for change? How do libraries approach, plan, implement, and evaluate change and align themselves to their parent institutions? What types of communication with stakeholders (both external and internal) do we plan and use regarding change? What kind of leadership is needed for ‘change’ initiatives? How do we make sure that our talent pool possesses the skills, competencies and the culture …

Palm Leaf Manuscripts In South Asia, Emera Bridger Wilson, Jessica M. Rice Apr 2019

Palm Leaf Manuscripts In South Asia, Emera Bridger Wilson, Jessica M. Rice

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Many thousands of palm leaf manuscripts, in South Asia and elsewhere, are currently in danger of being lost due to physical deterioration. These manuscripts contain irreplaceable cultural, religious, scientific, and artistic works. Palm leaf manuscripts, which can be centuries old, are found in numerous private collections, temples, monasteries, libraries and museums. The sheer number and wide dispersal of palm leaf manuscripts provide significant challenges to conservation and preservation, including both ethical and technical considerations. A literature search and examination of palm leaf manuscripts shed light on the urgent need to proceed worldwide along two fronts simultaneously: rapid digitization of critical …

A Partnership Between Academic And Public Librarians: “What The Health” Workshop Series, Jesssica A. Koos, Jamie Saragossi, Gregg A. Stevens, Salvatore Filosa

Library Faculty Publications

Background: Public librarians are in a unique position to assist the general public with health information inquiries. However, public librarians might not have the training, detailed knowledge, and confidence to provide high-quality health information.

Case Presentation: The authors created and delivered three workshops to public librarians in Suffolk County, New York, highlighting several National Library of Medicine resources. Each workshop focused on a different topic: general consumer health resources, genetics health resources, and environmental/toxicology resources. At the end of each workshop, participants were asked to complete the Training Session Evaluation form provided by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine …

Copyright Assessment In The Trenches: Workflow, Tools, Metadata, And More, Megan De Armond, Victoria Pilato, Greg Cram, Rina Elster Pantalony

Library Faculty Publications

Assessing copyright varies from institution to institution along with the specific workflow and end-user notices. This article looks at tools used in art libraries in a range of contexts along with pragmatic perspectives on copyright evaluation from a museum art library, a public research library, a university copyright advisory office, and a public university. Pain points for determining copyright presented by various formats, ownership issues, and digitization are addressed through cases encountered by the authors. Helpful tools and workflow strategies for moving forward, including widely available charts and resources, as well as software for copyright determination, are shared. Finally, the …

What We Talk About When We Talk About Digital Libraries: Ux Approaches To Labeling Online Special Collections, Dylan Burns, Alex J. Sundt, Darcy Pumphrey, Becky Thoms

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Digital libraries, digital collections, digital archives—just a few of the common terms used to describe the output of large scale digitization efforts. While the term digital library is commonly used by librarians, the term itself reflects the specific disciplinary and technical environments in which the concept for a “digital library” was first imagined. Terminology has been well explored in academic libraries, but questions remain regarding how meaningful digital library and related terms are to the users of digitized archival collections. In 2016, a reverse category test was conducted with target users of Utah State University Libraries’ digital collections to determine …

“All Stories True!”: The Nonfiction Western Magazine Collection At Boise State University, Alessandro Meregaglia, Gwyn Hervochon Apr 2019

“All Stories True!”: The Nonfiction Western Magazine Collection At Boise State University, Alessandro Meregaglia, Gwyn Hervochon

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes the genre of specialized magazines known as “nonfiction western magazines.” These magazines focused on telling stories about the “Old West”—the nineteenth-century western United States. Joe Small founded the genre’s first magazine, True West, in 1953. Over the next thirty years, the magazine’s popularity increased and dozens of imitators were published. This article discusses the rise and decline of these magazines and also explores the magazines’ usefulness both as a source of western American history and as cultural artifacts themselves to study how the “Old West” was perceived during the period in which they were published.
