The Librarian’S Guide To Zines For Classroom And Community, Claire Du Laney Dunker, Monica Maher, Amy Schindler
The Librarian’S Guide To Zines For Classroom And Community, Claire Du Laney Dunker, Monica Maher, Amy Schindler
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Zines continue to benefit from a resurgent interest from their 1990s heyday, including in libraries. A zine can serve as a pedagogical tool and are a low-cost addition to collections and programming in libraries. Over the course of the last three semesters, UNO librarians have collaborated with faculty on zine creation as a creative alternative to a typical research paper project for a course. Creating zines as assignments presents students with the opportunity to demonstrate research skills, exercise creativity, express compassion and empathy, and other outcomes. These outcomes have been illustrated by the classes that have created zines and presented …

INTRODUCTION Academic libraries are placing increasing emphasis on the provision of instruction for graduate students in non-traditional research skills and competencies such as scholarly communication concepts, data management and visualization, and text mining. Since proficiency in these concepts is often expected of graduate students but training may not be offered in the classroom, the library is a natural home for such instruction. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM Librarians at the University of South Carolina created a two-day workshop series for graduate students called SHARPGrads. This paper describes the planning process, survey method used to develop and assess the program, and findings obtained …

Using Robot Animal Companions In The Academic Library To Mitigate Student Stress, Autumn P. Edwards, Chad Edwards, Bryan Abendschein, Juliana Espinosa, Jonathan Scherger, Patricia Fravel Vander Meer
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
The purpose of this paper is to interrogate the relationship between self-reported levels of acute stress, perceived social support, and interactions with robot animals in an academic library. The authors hypothesized: 1. participants would report lower stress and higher positive affect after their interaction with a robot support animal; 2. perceived supportiveness of the robot support animal would positively predict the amount of stress reduction the participants reported.
The authors hosted a robot petting zoo in the main library at a large Midwestern university during finals week. Participants were asked to rate their stress level prior to interacting with the …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The customers in all institutions and organizations are important resources that drive the services for optimum satisfaction. They are also the important factor in library and information sectors. As the library is about people and satisfaction of needs, it makes sense that these people are accorded with the highest regards, respect and warmth for that total quality service. The 5 star customer services become pertinent and great strategy in efficient library and information centers. Today, the customers have the power to make or mar any organization through information sharing in online and offline modes. This paper highlighted the concept of …

Information Science Faculty Publications
This paper reports preliminary results of a survey of 458 US public library staff members regarding their perceptions of drag queen storytimes (DQS) and the ways in which these storytimes influence child development. The majority of respondents from libraries that have hosted at least one DQS agreed that DQS support healthy child development and positively influence children’s understanding of gender and/or sexuality, while respondents from libraries that have not hosted DQS were more likely to disagree or report being undecided. Specific ways in which respondents perceive DQS to influence child development are also analyzed.

Multimodal Data Fusion And Attack Detection In Recommender Systems, Mehmet Aktukmak
Multimodal Data Fusion And Attack Detection In Recommender Systems, Mehmet Aktukmak
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The commercial platforms that use recommender systems can collect relevant information to produce useful recommendations to the platform users. However, these sources usually contain missing values, imbalanced and heterogeneous data, and noisy observations. Such characteristics render the process of exploiting the information nontrivial, as one should carefully address them during the data fusion process. In addition to the degenerative characteristics, some entries can be fake, i.e., they can be the outcomes of malicious intents to manipulate the system. These entries should be eliminated before incorporation to any recommendation task. Detecting such malicious attacks quickly and accurately and then mitigating them …

Business Models For Post-Crisis Information Ecosystems, Antje Mays
Library Presentations
Since early 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted activity across business, education, research, and communities. Public health safety precautions have forced drastic reductions in economic and educational activity, resulting in widespread economic uncertainty and sizeable budget cuts. With library budgets already declining since the 2001-2002 recession following the dotcom crash and more steeply since the 2007-2009 Great Recession spawned by the financial crash, the pandemic has accelerated trends that were already underway. Libraries’ reduced purchasing power places the information ecosystem at risk of contraction in the race to contain costs.
While economic contexts and publishing forms have changed considerably. …

Where Are Library-Supported Apc Funds Going?: The Ongoing Role Of The Apc Fund In Open Access Outreach, Andrea Wirth
Library Faculty Presentations
This poster will discuss how library support for article processing charge (APC) funds has changed since the first fund (as documented by SPARC) was established in 2005. The paper will also cover insights from one institution's implementation of an APC fund in 2018 and how that fund is serving as one method in a suite of tools to engage the campus community on the topic of open access more generally.
With the push towards transformative agreements, and other efforts to embed open access support in publisher contracts, what is the role of the "traditional" article processing charge fund? These funds …

Concerns about secondary use of data and limited opportunities for benefit-sharing have focused attention on the tension that Indigenous communities feel between (1) protecting Indigenous rights and interests in Indigenous data (including traditional knowledges) and (2) supporting open data, machine learning, broad data sharing, and big data initiatives. The International Indigenous Data Sovereignty Interest Group (within the Research Data Alliance) is a network of nation-state based Indigenous data sovereignty networks and individuals that developed the ‘CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance’ (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) in consultation with Indigenous Peoples, scholars, non-profit organizations, and governments. Digital Identity: A Human-Centered Risk Awareness Study, Toufic N. Chebib
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cybersecurity threats and compromises have been at the epicenter of media attention; their risk and effect on people’s digital identity is something not to be taken lightly. Though cyber threats have affected a great number of people in all age groups, this study focuses on 55 to 75-year-olds, as this age group is close to retirement or already retired. Therefore, a notable compromise impacting their digital identity can have a major impact on their life.
To help guide this study, the following research question was formulated, “What are the risk perceptions of individuals, between the ages of 55 and 75 …

This study seeks to assess the information literacy skills of undergraduate students in one of Ghana’s multi-campus universities. This became necessary as there was the need to know whether the students had understood or not the concepts of the information literacy programme after it had been introduced and taught, two years ago. Using the survey approach, 327 first year diploma and degree students were selected to participate in the study. x2 ≤ 0.05 is also used in the study to test the existence of associations between interested variables. The results of this study revealed that majority of the students have …

The Use Of Empiricism, Rationalism And Positivism In Library And Information Science Research, Nadia Abbas Shah, Amjid Khan, Pervaiz Ahmad, Muhammad Arshad
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper aims to study the significance/importance of “empiricism”, “rationalism” and “positivism” and their application in library and information science (LIS) research. The objectives of this paper covered in two parts. Part one describes the historical development of these epistemologies, explore its main characteristics and presents the criticism that has been nurtured against these views. In the second part, the importance and use of these epistemologies in the context of LIS research have been discussed. Since philosophy is the least touched subject in LIS, therefore, limited literature is available to review these epistemologies from the perspective of LIS.
