Searching For Tūpuna, Nicola Andrews

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture opened the “Pacific Voices” exhibition in 1997, a community-led exhibition of Indigenous cultures throughout the Pacific Rim, including Māori. Twenty years later, Nicola Andrews, a Ngāti Pāoa Māori student at the University of Washington, serendipitously visited the Burke and began collaborating with the museum to reframe taonga (treasure, anything prized) descriptions in its catalogue and physical spaces. The Burke collection also includes 962 Māori photographs spanning the 19th century, which were removed from Aotearoa New Zealand and donated to the museum in 1953. These

photographs had been digitized but not published, …

Expanding The Educational Network For Students With Autism: Partnering With School Librarians, Selena J. Layden, Amelia Anderson Jan 2021

Expanding The Educational Network For Students With Autism: Partnering With School Librarians, Selena J. Layden, Amelia Anderson

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

School librarians play an important role in our public schools by supporting students through both formal and informal learning opportunities. All students have access to library services, including those who receive additional support through special education. Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in particular, may benefit from both the library environment and the knowledge and training specific to school librarians. Yet, school librarians frequently are not included as part of these students' educational teams. This study utilized a survey to discover the extent to which school librarians report providing services and supports to students with ASD, as well as the …

The Treatment Of Privacy In Professional Codes Of Ethics: An International Survey, Mary Francis

Research & Publications

Privacy is a major issue within libraries; however, the general concept of privacy varies across culture, context, and era. To understand what libraries mean when they discuss privacy, this article looks at the codes of ethics from 70 international library associations to find references to privacy. Using a content analysis, several themes emerge as issues that should be considered and asserted when approaching privacy concerns in the library.

Undergraduate Student Attitudes About Search Data Privacy In Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Research Study, Laura Gariepy Jan 2021

Undergraduate Student Attitudes About Search Data Privacy In Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Research Study, Laura Gariepy

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose and goals

This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study on undergraduate students’ attitudes about search data privacy in academic libraries, and their preferences for how librarians should handle information about what they search for, borrow, and download. This is an important topic due to the increasingly data-driven nature of assessment in higher education, contrasted with libraries’ professional commitment to privacy which has historically limited the amount of data collected about student library use. Although the literature is rich with evidence of librarians’ commitment to user privacy, very few studies address user perspectives on this matter.

The central …

Qualities Of Academic Librarians Who Advance Into Middle Management: An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Megan Hodge, Nicole Spoor, Cassidy Sheehan Jan 2021

Qualities Of Academic Librarians Who Advance Into Middle Management: An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Megan Hodge, Nicole Spoor, Cassidy Sheehan

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The path to management is difficult for academic librarians without formal supervisory experience, especially in public services. However, little research on how frontline librarians without supervisory experience advance into middle management has been conducted. To determine the extent to which a relationship between certain personal characteristics and librarians’ likelihood to advance exists, a survey was administered to public services librarians who had been promoted into middle management within the previous 5 years. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that charismatic presence, long-term thinking, instruction experience, customer service orientation, interpersonal skills, and ability to achieve tenure/promotion in rank contributed to librarians’ successful advancement.

The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth S. Connell, Lisa C. Wallis, David Comeaux

Library Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted higher education, including academic libraries. This paper compares the use of library resources (including interlibrary loan, website and discovery tool pageviews, database use, patron interactions, etc.) at three university libraries before and after the pandemic. The latter part of the 2019 and 2020 spring semesters are the timeframes of focus, although two control timeframes from earlier in those semesters are used to determine how the semesters differed when the coronavirus was not a factor. The institutions experienced similar patterns of use across many metrics.

Embodied Care: Exploring Mental Health Zines As Feminist Health Resources, Liz Chenevey Jan 2021

Embodied Care: Exploring Mental Health Zines As Feminist Health Resources, Liz Chenevey

Libraries

In the traditional health information landscape, patriarchal knowledge practices of expertise, neutrality, objectivity, and ownership are held as the standard. This paper will explore zines as feminist mental health resources that embody radical care and subvert these knowledge practices. There are many personal zines on the topic of mental health, ranging from outlining self care strategies for overall mental wellness to deeper discussions of serious mental illness (trauma, mood disorders, personality disorders, etc). Even when not an explicitly feminist theme, I argue that these health zines are in themselves a feminist act. By utilizing attributes of feminist knowledge production, such …

"We're Gonna Figure This Out": First-Generation Students And Academic Libraries, Juliann Couture, Jimena Bretón, Emily Dommermuth, Natasha Floersch, Darren Ilett, Kristine Nowak, Lindsay Roberts, Renae Watson

University Libraries Publications

Although extensive research has looked at first-generation college students’ experiences, very little has examined the role of the library. This article reports the results of an asset-based exploratory study understanding the experiences of first-generation college students at three universities. Key findings of this study focus on themes of self-advocacy, sense of belonging, library customization, and integration of the library with the larger campus. This article discusses these key themes in the context of improving library services and spaces, ultimately providing more inclusive resources for all student groups. Implications and recommendations for professional practice are discussed.

Research On The Cultivation Of False Information Identification Ability Of Users By University Libraries At Home And Abroad, Yan-Ping Jiang, Xiao-Hong Chen, Jane Wu, Wanjun Xia

Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications

With the rapid development of new media on the Internet and the proliferation of misinformation/disinformation, the academic libraries, as the information resource center, has the responsibility and obligation to cultivate the user's information identification ability. However, compared with foreign university libraries, the guidance of domestic university libraries to identify false information is not systematic and explicit. Therefore, we must improve the users' interest, practicality, and depth of training practice activities. This paper analyzes, contrasts, and summarizes the relevant research and practice results of the false information identification training of domestic and foreign well-known university libraries through literature and network research. …

A Large-Scale Validation Of The Relationship Between Cross-Disciplinary Research And Its Uptake In Policy-Related Documents, Using The Novel Overton Altmetrics Database, Henrique Pinheiro, Etienne Vignola-Gagné Phd, David Campbell

Peer Reviewed Papers

Cross-disciplinary research (multi-/interdisciplinarity) is incentivized by funding agencies to foster research outcomes addressing complex societal challenges. This study focuses on the link between cross-disciplinary research and its uptake in a broad set of policy-related documents. Using the new policy-oriented database Overton, matched to Scopus, logistic regression was used in assessing this relationship in publications from FP7- and H2020-supported projects. Cross-disciplinary research was captured through two lenses at the paper level, namely from the disciplinary diversity of contributing authors (DDA) and of cited references (DDR). DDA increased the likelihood that publications were cited in policy documents, with DDR possibly making a …

A Team-Based Liaison Approach To Science Coverage, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Maggie Albro, Jennifer Groff Jan 2021

A Team-Based Liaison Approach To Science Coverage, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Maggie Albro, Jennifer Groff

Publications

Liaison librarianship is an evolving specialty area in academic librarianship in which success is heavily dependent upon long-term relationship building between departments and librarians. In times of turnover and change the success of the liaison model is threatened due to the lack of continued staffing in liaison roles. This paper presents a case study of a team-based liaison coverage model for STEM fields during an extended period of turnover and change. Without this shared approach to liaison and functional duties, it would not be possible for only three people to provide service to over 14,000 patrons across multiple colleges.
