Using The Dig Method For Data Literacy, Dana Thompson Jan 2021

Using The Dig Method For Data Literacy, Dana Thompson

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

As a research and instruction librarian and a liaison to the College of Business, I often incorporate lessons on data literacy and visual literacy into my instruction sessions for business students. In these sessions, I focus on teaching students how to read the photographs, charts, graphs, and infographics they encounter in databases, such as IBISWorld and Statista, and news sources, such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. While teaching Journalism students (who funnily enough fall under the College of Business at Murray State University), I developed a method for evaluating digital images called the Digital Image …

A Supply Chain Model For Library Quality And Service Improvement, Nancy Kress, Joel Wisner Jan 2021

A Supply Chain Model For Library Quality And Service Improvement, Nancy Kress, Joel Wisner

LEAN Management Initiative

The key to a library’s success is its ability to effectively and economically deliver services and information that users value. Additionally, the objective of supply chain management is to coordinate the focal firm’s processes and activities with those of its suppliers and customers, such that the firm’s delivered products and services meet or exceed customer requirements. It thus seemed appropriate to analyze a library from a supply chain perspective to assess and improve its ability to serve its users. Consequently, the authors employed an action research methodology to work with library personnel from two departments, User Services and Technical Services, …

Wy Open: A Grassroots Open Educational Resources Initiative, Shannon M. Smith, Chad Hutchens, Cassandra Kvenild

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This recipe describes starting a library-led open educational resources (OER) as a mechanism to recognize and promote cost-savings for students while allowing faculty to tailor their learning materials to specific pedagogy needs. The grassroots approach is best implemented alongside existing organizational infrastructures. At the University of Wyoming (UW), the OER initiative developed without a dedicated position or home department but rather a collaborative foundation across the libraries which builds momentum, spreads the message, and ultimately the workload.

Commitment, Respect, And Trust: The Building Blocks Of A Strong Mentoring Relationship, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2021

Commitment, Respect, And Trust: The Building Blocks Of A Strong Mentoring Relationship, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Many formal mentoring programs only call for one characteristic in prospective mentors and mentees: a willingness to participate. However, research has shown that there are specific mentor (and mentee) characteristics and behaviors that encourage a meaningful, lasting mentoring experience. Generally, these characteristics and behaviors fall into three categories: (1) a commitment to the relationship, (2) mutual respect between mentor and mentee, and (3) mutual trust.1 Fortunately, these attributes can be nurtured in mentors and mentees, especially when the relationship is given careful forethought. In this chapter, the mentoring relationship is examined, particularly the central elements of mutual commitment, respect, and …

Critical Information Literacy And Critical Service Learning, Andrea E. Brewster, Nicole Branch, Jennifer E. Nutefall Jan 2021

Critical Information Literacy And Critical Service Learning, Andrea E. Brewster, Nicole Branch, Jennifer E. Nutefall

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Critical information literacy (CIL) and critical service learning (CSL) have developed in parallel over recent years but have yet to intersect robustly. Rooted in critical theory, these approaches emphasize both conceptual frameworks and practices that center questions of social inequality in our teaching and learning practices—and in our universities as institutions. A small body of literature suggests that students’ social justice understanding is deepened when engaging with research-intensive assignments. Within this study, we explored students’ understanding of social justice in connection with research-intensive and non–research-intensive course assignments. Using a semi-structured interview technique, we interviewed 23 undergraduate students from 15 different …

The report includes recommendations for specific decision-making groups such as the Administrative Council, Management Council, and Faculty Organization, as well as a recommendation to create an All Staff Organization that represents employees of all job categories within decision-making …

Smu Libraries Annual Report 2019 / 2020, Singapore Management University Jan 2021

Smu Libraries Annual Report 2019 / 2020, Singapore Management University

SMU Corporate Reports

Since joining SMU Libraries in March 2020, I have been impressed with the SMU community’s interest in the Libraries and the Libraries’ staff’s dedication, enthusiasm, and flexibility. These are all traits that have contributed to the Libraries’ impact on the SMU community (and beyond) and the advancement of student success, research, and collaboration during this past year. While 2020 has brought uncertainty and great challenges, there are occasions to celebrate as well, including SMU’s 20th anniversary. 2020 also marks the 10th anniversary of InK, the SMU institutional repository. InK has been an integral part of making SMU research available to …

Searching For Paumanok: A Study Of Library Of Congress Authorities And Classifications For Indigenous Long Island, New York, Kristen J. Nyitray, Dana Reijerkerk Jan 2021

Searching For Paumanok: A Study Of Library Of Congress Authorities And Classifications For Indigenous Long Island, New York, Kristen J. Nyitray, Dana Reijerkerk

Library Faculty Publications

Long Island is a case in point of the United States settler state landscape co-opting Indigenous peoples and places for naming geographies, beaches, and spaces. Despite ubiquity, the historic Indigenous origins and contexts have been largely obscured and overwritten. This study assesses the availability and accuracy of terms for organizing, classifying, and describing works by and about Indigenous Long Island. It reveals a lack of representation in catalog records and suggests remediation through establishing subjects and names with accurate, culturally relevant terms. A symbolic form of land acknowledgment, this practice of accountability fosters commemoration, reclamation, and reparation processes.
