Inner Voice Of Women's Self-Leadership, Diana M. Cooley Jan 2008

Inner Voice Of Women's Self-Leadership, Diana M. Cooley

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

My research explores an aspect of leadership that is personal, which is the inner voice of self-leadership. The inner voice affects all aspects of leadership. The inner voice is highly personal in that one’s private thoughts are unique. The inner voice can increase one’s self-awareness and influence one to move forward and change or to pull one back to stand still. My thesis is that we can more fully understand how women leaders lead themselves and subsequently lead in society if we advance our understanding of their stories and experiences regarding the inner voice. This research improves our understanding of …

Energy-Flow – A New Perspective On James Macgregor Burns’ Transforming Leadership: A New Pursuit Of Happiness, Pi-Jern Caroline Fu Jan 2008

Energy-Flow – A New Perspective On James Macgregor Burns’ Transforming Leadership: A New Pursuit Of Happiness, Pi-Jern Caroline Fu

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This theoretical dissertation documents a personal transforming leadership experience; during which, I explored my Leadership as Energy-Flow model by having a virtual dialogue with the polymathic works of theorists and thinkers to corroborate and refine it. The model consists of a theory and a conceptual scheme. The energy-flow theory, based on the laws of physics and Chinese philosophy and cosmological science, fashions the energy-flow conceptual scheme. Using the conceptual scheme, I delve into the Premise of the Dialogue, “In what ways and to what extent would using the energy-flow frame of reference describe and stimulate new meanings in Transforming Leadership: …

Dimensions Of Mentoring Relationships In The Workplace: A Holistic Perspective, Miriam Grace-Rowland Jan 2008

Dimensions Of Mentoring Relationships In The Workplace: A Holistic Perspective, Miriam Grace-Rowland

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This was an exploratory study to understand the lived experience of those involved in mentoring relationships within a formal mentoring program in a corporate context. The researcher looked for rich detail about the nature of the relationship from the perspective of the mentor and mentee. To achieve a holistic perspective, the experience of organizational managers was deliberately included in the research. Exploration of this triadic relationship of mentor, mentee, and organizational manager has been neglected in the empirical literature. An exploration of where meaning intersected and diverged among the triad relationship members gave depth to the dimensional frame. Findings suggested …

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences Of Engaging In Service-Learning With Undergraduates, Cara Meixner Jan 2008

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences Of Engaging In Service-Learning With Undergraduates, Cara Meixner

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences of Engaging in Service-Learning with Undergraduates is an exploratory, qualitative study of faculty members’ learning, growth, and development in service-learning contexts. Through two, interwoven forms of constructivist grounded theory – situational mapping and dimensional analysis – this dissertation brought voice to a once ‘private’ perspective, making explicit what all is happening as participants make meaning of their experiences engaging in service-learning with college students. A three-phased series of recursive, comparative interviews and concurrent analysis resulted in the development of a grounded theory best captured by a core, organizing perspective – evolving learning. This perspective is …

A Critical Assessment Of Professional Skills And Knowledge In Supplier Diversity: A Delphi Study, Mia Cole Jan 2008

A Critical Assessment Of Professional Skills And Knowledge In Supplier Diversity: A Delphi Study, Mia Cole

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Today, many US corporations have made great strides to embrace supplier diversity as a social consideration, and most importantly, as a strategic business enabler. From the earlier years of mandating minority inclusion to the realization that diversifying the supply chain creates value by capitalizing on the diverse background and experiences of minority businesses, supplier diversity has emerged as a major business initiative. It is one of the initiatives that contribute to the welfare of the country by building minority communities and strengthening our society. By developing business coalitions and partnerships with minority suppliers there is tremendous opportunity to impact the …

The Leadership Self-Identity Of Women College Presidents, Robbie Hertneky Phd Jan 2008

The Leadership Self-Identity Of Women College Presidents, Robbie Hertneky Phd

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this research study was to explore the concept of leadership self-identity in a particular population of formal leaders—women college presidents. Using narrative inquiry, the research examined the following: how these women describe and define themselves as leaders, what personal attributes they believe allow them to be leaders, their past and future career intentions, how their relationships with others influence their leadership self-identity, and the stories they tell about themselves and leadership. Participants were asked questions designed to reflect their core identity and personal narrative, and to describe their career and relationships. Common themes that emerge include: how …

Mentoring Women Of Color For Leadership: Do Barriers Exist?, Sandra Yvonne Jeffcoat Jan 2008

Mentoring Women Of Color For Leadership: Do Barriers Exist?, Sandra Yvonne Jeffcoat

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The number of women in the workforce is increasing, but they continue to hold few corporate leadership positions. Women are running into the glass ceiling, a ceiling that is thicker for Women of Color. The under-representation of women and minorities in leadership positions and the recognition of the business value of Diversity in this global economy have driven organizations to launch diversity programs and use mentoring as support for aspiring women leaders. Ragins and Cotton's 1991 research found that there were barriers for women who were looking to use mentoring as a tool for leadership development, but her participants were …

Poetic Leadership, A Territory Of Aesthetic Consciousness And Change, R. Amrit Kasten-Daryanani Jan 2008

Poetic Leadership, A Territory Of Aesthetic Consciousness And Change, R. Amrit Kasten-Daryanani

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Poetic leadership is a new theoretical construct that views leadership as an activity that unites a lyrical intellect with keenly felt emotion for the purpose of producing changes in the consciousness of self and others. This change begins within the interiority of self, moving surely to broader realms of one's surroundings and society, provoking movement that impacts the developing potential of the individual and the cultural milieu in which they exist. Emotion is the primary trace into consciousness used in this dissertation, which serves to unite experiences of the heart with experiences of the mind. The unification of these disparate …

How Are Nasa Engineers Motivated? An Analysis Of Factors That Influence Nasa Goddard Engineers’ Level Of Motivation, Howard Eric Kea Jan 2008

How Are Nasa Engineers Motivated? An Analysis Of Factors That Influence Nasa Goddard Engineers’ Level Of Motivation, Howard Eric Kea

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

NASA is an organization known for pushing the envelope of engineering and scientific achievement. It can be argued that engineers working for NASA are intrinsically highly motivated due to the nature of the work and the mission of NASA. This study explores how supervisor behaviors, both intrinsic and extrinsic and demographic factors influence motivation of NASA Goddard engineers in their current environment. Recent Congressional and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) policies, such as full cost accounting, levy strict oversight of project spending. As a result of these policies, NASA engineers must now focus their attention on getting assigned work …

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara Jan 2008

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

As evidence of the earth’s limited capacity to sustain human life mounts, institutions of higher education are being looked to for leadership in the effort to educate students about environmental concerns and support the development of sustainable innovations. Colleges and universities are responding to this call for leadership by starting and/or expanding environmental research programs, integrating sustainability issues throughout the curriculum, adopting sustainable operations, and building green facilities. Reflecting upon the sustainability efforts of these institutions, this research study explores the following questions: What factors are essential for initiating and leading a successful change effort to foster sustainability in higher …

On Being A Nonprofit Executive Director, Janet Elizabeth Rechtman Jan 2008

On Being A Nonprofit Executive Director, Janet Elizabeth Rechtman

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

In describing the course of change in a dynamic field such as the nonprofit sector, neo-institutional theorists argue that isomorphic forces such as replication of best practices tend to increase the homogeneity of actors. This interplay of structure and agency creates what is known as the structuration of an institutional field. These theorists have little to say about the people who influence and are influenced by these dynamics. This study explores this personal experience at the micro level of the nonprofit field executive leadership. It focuses on their challenges related to the isomorphic pressures resulting from: (1) socio-economic roles, (2) …

Small School Leadership: A Q Method Study Of Elements Of Leadership Specific To A Small School Setting, Charis Eirene Sharp Jan 2008

Small School Leadership: A Q Method Study Of Elements Of Leadership Specific To A Small School Setting, Charis Eirene Sharp

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Smaller schools have become an extremely popular school reform model. Research that connects them to student achievement is being used to support and create autonomous small schools as well as schools-within-schools. While it would seem to be a logical application, the schools-within-schools model is not performing at the levels expected as indicated by the small schools research. Research on these two different school settings needs to be separated, examined, and applied independently. Areas lacking research include questions about which aspects of schools support the functioning of the school, such as leadership. This study used Q-methodology to study leadership in a …

Portraits: Discovering Art As A Transformative Learning Process At Mid-Life, William Scott Wallace Jan 2008

Portraits: Discovering Art As A Transformative Learning Process At Mid-Life, William Scott Wallace

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study explores art as a transformative learning process at mid-life. As adults individuate as they develop into middle age and move towards integration, they may experience transformative learning, a process that can lead to a much broader and deeper life view. Most studies have viewed transformative learning as a process that occurs through critical reflection, (Mezirow, 1991, 2000), possible disorienting dilemmas, (Mezirow, 1991, 2000, and Daloz, 2000), influence of personality type (Cranton, 1994), soulfulness (Dirkx), and other means of awareness. While researchers acknowledge the possibilities of experiencing transformative learning through the arts, a review of the empirical literature reveals …

Dialogue As Performance. Performance As Dialogue, Laura Lynn

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation is an arts-based qualitative study in Leadership and Change that describes the qualities of dialogue revealed through the felt experience of Native and non-Native American music composers engaged in a dialogue through music composition. The fifteen co-collaborators who participated in the study range in age from three-years-old to elders. The study is theoretically embedded within Performance Studies, Dr. Carolyn Kenny’s music therapy model Field of Play, and aesthetic philosophy. Methodologically, this work is expressed through performance ethnography and autoethnography and privileges textual and non-textual modes of account including photographs, video excerpts, poetry, and music manuscript. The text is …

Myers-Briggs And Servant-Leadership, Ralph Lewis, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Editor's Note: This publication is drawn from a series of conversations between Ralph Lewis and Larry C. Spears over a period of several years. The central focus is on the intersecting points between Myers-Briggs and servant-leadership-two separate concepts that, the authors believe, when taken together, can serve to further their mutual development.

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears Jan 2008

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

My dictionary offers the following definitions for the words: Heart, Mind, and Spirit- • Heart: regarded as the seat of emotions, personality, attributes. • Mind: the thinking and perceiving part of consciousness. • Spirit: a pervading animating principle, essential, or characteristic quality of life. I believe that all three of these are important to understanding the essential nature of servant-leadership. Standard practices are rapidly shifting toward the ideas put forward by Robert Greenleaf, Stephen Covey, Peter Senge, Max DePree, Margaret Wheatley, Ken Blanchard, and many others who suggest that there is a better way to lead and manage our organizations. …

The Seeker’S Journey, John Izzo, Larry C. Spears Jan 2008

The Seeker’S Journey, John Izzo, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

What may be needed, and perhaps now it is a possibility, is a new initiative from some seekers in which they take responsibility for finding and responding to the contemporary prophet who will help them find their ways out of their individual and collective wildernesses so that they will become more effective servants of society. . . . How would Seekers Anonymous do for a name? .. . For those who participate, healing, the sense ofbeing made whole will come from deep involvement with creative work on the structural flaws in our society, work that has both ameliorative and society …

Servant-Leadership And Love: The Horizon Of The Possible, Shann Ferch Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership And Love: The Horizon Of The Possible, Shann Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

To build a good family requires immense personal discipline. Consider then the organization, the nation, the world. The personal and collective responsibility to initiate, develop, and sustain a way of life self-sacrificial and life-generative is daunting. Inevitably, in response to the crisis of humanity engaged in each new age, those who feel so called enter a crucible in which the paradox of the tragic and the comedic overlap, where the sacred is touched by the profane and human evil is not a separate entity but rather is found even within human good. The complexity and the initial agony of this …

Servant-Leadership In The Context Of Sport, Kirk Westre Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership In The Context Of Sport, Kirk Westre

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership. -Harvey Firestone The characteristics of a new style of leadership, servant-leadership, first described by Robert K. Greenleaf (1977), served as the framework for this study, with the specific focus being to determine the applicability of servant-leadership in the area of sport. Servant-leadership is an emerging leadership style that has gained momentum in a variety of organizational situations (Greenleaf, 1977). Leading authors on leadership and organizational management have discussed the positive effects of servant-leadership on employee satisfaction and organizational profits-authors such as Kenneth Blanchard, Peter Block, Steven Covey, Max …

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman Jan 2008

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The precepts of servant-leadership, described by Robert K. Greenleaf, are the focal points around which this study was conducted. The study was designed to gain a measure of the extent of servant-leadership and personal aspects of spirit within the organizations, rather than as an attempt to measure the servant-leadership and spirit of certain organizational leaders. The quantitative study was designed to enhance understanding of servant-leadership and spirit in organizations.

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

"Top line," used by researchers in the field of leadership and creativity (Freeman, Isaksen, & Dorval, 2001), proposes that servant-leadership is a driving force of organizations focused on questions of why and for whom, as opposed to the bottom-line what (pp. 265-267). Higher education could improve with leadership development efforts to "reclaim intangible resources, including people's talents that increase innovative capacity by focusing on relationships, perceptions, and attitudes" (p. 264). Because public education does not have, per se, a dollar-driven, "bottom line" focus, its institutions can be wholly about service. Robert K. Greenleaf (2002), the leading figure in servant-leadership theory …

Servant-Leaders In Action: Philadelphia Freedom Schools Foster Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears Jan 2008

Servant-Leaders In Action: Philadelphia Freedom Schools Foster Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I recently had the distinct privilege of visiting the Philadelphia Freedom Schools (PFS), where I learned about a significant and inspiring program underway to encourage young people in their understanding of servantleadership, and to live their lives as exemplary servant-leaders. "It always begins with a vision," said Sedrick Miles, Philadelphia Freedom Schools Manager. "For a great institution like Philadelphia Freedom Schools, any worthwhile contribution to the collective vision of the community must be equal to the legacy passed down from servant-leaders who came before us."

Xhosa Tribal Culture And Its Influence On The Servant-Leadership Of Nelson Mandela, Mary C. Sobralske Jan 2008

Xhosa Tribal Culture And Its Influence On The Servant-Leadership Of Nelson Mandela, Mary C. Sobralske

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Your pain is my pain, my wealth is your wealth, your salvation is my salvation. -an African expression of ubuntu (www.simongoland.com, 2004) In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected black president of South Africa. This historical event had a tremendous impact on the world. Much has been written about Mandela as a leader, but little has highlighted his cultural background, how it influenced his deep-seated cultural values and beliefs, and how his culture shaped his leadership. It is important to analyze how his cultural upbringing determined his destiny as a dignified, respected, and popular global servant-leader.

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson Jan 2008

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert K. Greenleaf (1977) offers a foundational understanding of servant-leadership with this statement: The servant-leader is servant first. .. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. . . Then, conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead... The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest-priority needs are being served. The best test, and the most difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and more likely themselves to become servants? And what …

Remembering Humanity In The American Justice System, Norman Carter

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As a police officer working for a municipal law enforcement agency, I see that human suffering and gross atrocities occur daily. This exposure creates much heartfelt struggle within me, as well as in other members of police department organizations throughout the United States. The struggle revolves around one's ability to maintain the capability of objectifying people or experiences, which is often necessary in order to protect one's own psyche from such traumatic events, while maintaining enough subjectivity to treat people with compassion, respect, humanity, and forgiveness. In my experience, the internal struggle that members of my organization and I are …

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Going Forward, Paul M. Nakai Jan 2008

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Going Forward, Paul M. Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Two years ago, Jack Welch spoke of an Ethiopian CEO who had led his organization into becoming a global multi-million dollar company. Over the last two years, this man became aware that 60% of his workforce had tested positive for HIV. He sought the advice of many contemporary business consultants, unfortunately without much personal satisfaction. Most of the individuals with whom he conferred tried to analyze the problem and resolve it through the state of mind that saw the situation as a problem. They spoke of recruiting programs, procedures and protocols, protection against diminishing productivity, infection dangers, and other operational …
