Symbolic Convergence: A Case Study Of Magnum, P.I., Melissa C. Wessman

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The study that follows examines the depiction of Vietnam veterans in the television series Magnum, P.I., particularly the representation of the struggles Vietnam veterans faced when reintegrating into civilian society after the war. Assessment of the series using fantasy theme analysis reveals that Magnum, P.I. generates a shared understanding for regular viewers of the post-combat experience for veterans. This is important to note because entertainment media, namely television, is a far-reaching outlet that can be utilized to teach and expand viewer understanding of social issues, such as the plight of veterans. Also, the struggle of veterans to reintegrate into society …

Transparency Through Social Media: Improving The Credibility Of Pr Professionals In The Twenty-First Century, Pete Voss

The study observes how PR professionals are currently engaging these audiences, and also demonstrates how the public perceives these actions. The philosophical framework for this study stemmed from Aristotle's belief in goodwill in communities (Book 1, Chapter 1), and Augustine's (1909) belief that "All wish to rejoice in truth" (p. 186). Sherif's Social Judgment Theory …

Cultivating Culturally Empathic Environments In The Academic Setting, Sharon-Rose Lau

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Teachers, as leaders and facilitators in the classroom, not only disseminate information, but ultimately propagate and perpetuate ideologies that shape their students' cognitive world. However, with the enrollment of minority students increasing in the United States, greater challenges are encountered as teachers struggle to promote advocacy, respect, and understanding in the classroom. Navigating the relationally ambiguous or uncertain requires certain cognitive tools. The Uncertainty Management Theory which encompasses relational mindfulness and empathy assists individuals in developing the communicative skills necessary to fortify relational contingencies. This thesis explores the communicative methods teachers use to create culturally empathic environments within the academic …

There are common elements used in DTCA of antidepressants. The review of the common elements shows the use of specific …

People are sensitive to the fairness of decisions made or the treatment they receive. This also applies to public policy implementation and public engagement efforts.

The Roles Of Women In Television Situation Comedies: A Pilot Study, Amanda Marie Irene Scott Nov 2011

The Roles Of Women In Television Situation Comedies: A Pilot Study, Amanda Marie Irene Scott

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This work constitutes a pilot study of male/female relationships in television situational comedies. Twenty-five sitcom episodes which aired on major television networks between the years 2000-2011 were evaluated for instances of the perpetuation of patriarchy and the stereotyping of traditional gender roles. The episodes were chosen from three different television shows. The findings indicated that television sitcoms are perpetuating patriarchy and promoting traditional gender role stereotypes; furthermore, the shows do not appear to portray an accurate depiction of real life society. The study has limitations including time constraints, but provides a baseline for further studies on the subject.

Developing A Leadership Consortium, Jan Lloyd, Sherry L. Early Phd

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

Although the term “leadership” did not appear until approximately the 1850s, leadership can be viewed as an ancient art (Bass, 1990). However, it was not until 1976 that the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission IV developed a leadership task force to investigate leadership programs in higher education and clearly defined the differences between leadership development, leadership training, and leadership education (Roberts & Ullom, 1990). The field of leadership progressed over the years by examining various components such as trait theory, behavioral theories, situational theories, and, most recently, leadership identity development theories. Since then, information regarding definitions of leadership, descriptions …

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Over the last five years, organizations have begun to invest in non-traditional marketing communications strategies, specifically, social media marketing. While organizations, in general, are clear about the value of social media marketing, their current strategies are not engaging and uninspiring. The literature on this topic highlights critical considerations for the most significant communications impact (Foulger, 2004; Lasswell, 1948), such as the importance of human interaction, interpersonal ability, personal influence and intimacy (Lazarsfeld, 1944 ; Short, Williams & Christie, 1976). Additionally, a study by Boase, Horrigan, Wellman & Rainie (2006) presents research on how the Internet and Social Networking are revolutionizing …
