Individuals And Couples With Infertility: Quality Of Life, Relationship Satisfaction, Resilience, Depression, And Shame, Niko C. Wilson, Sejal Barden

Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education

This study examined the relationship between fertility-related quality of life, relationship satisfaction, resilience, depression, and shame in individuals and couples with infertility (N = 556). Using structural equation modeling (SEM) and the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM), the study assessed gender covariates and dyadic influences in couples (n = 52). SEM results showed fertility-related quality of life impacted resilience, depression, and shame, while its relational aspect influenced relationship satisfaction. APIM identified partner effects on relationship satisfaction and shame. Findings provide insights for counseling practices, promoting relationship well-being in couples facing infertility.

The purpose of the study was to clarify the definition of sex positivity and identify sex-positive attitudes, knowledge, and skills through the development and evaluation of the Sex Positivity Inventory for Counselors (SPI-C). The exploratory factor analysis supported a six-factor, 34-item scale, accounting for 32.9% of the variance within the study. The SPI-C had an excellent internal consistency of 0.96 and consisted of the following factors: 1) Procedural Sex Positivity, 2) Comfortability with Sexuality, 3) Perceived Sex Positivity, 4) Fundamental Sex Education, 5) Sexological Worldview, and 6) Unconditional Positive Sexual Regard. Implications for practice, counselor education, and supervision are discussed.

Despite positive shifts in cultural conversations surrounding sex, there is a lack of institutional focus on sexuality training in counselor education. This is surprising, given that sexuality is an inherently multicultural issue, and a sex positive framework aligns with counseling’s core values which include social justice, resilience, and wellness. We discuss the relevance of incorporating sex positivity in counselor education and provide ten strategies for counselor educators to integrate sex positivity into their teaching and supervision. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the experiences transgender adults have with attachment and childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The theory guiding this study is John Bowlby’s attachment theory, as secure attachment has the potential to act as a buffer against increased risks in cases where histories of CSA have occurred. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore how online gamers aged 20 to 40 experience the impact of socialization on self-verification and personal purpose. Semi-structured interviews with eleven participants were conducted, and data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method to capture the essence of participants lived experiences and the sample population consisted of 12 participants. This quantitative archival study examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and intimate partner violence (IPV) among participants in a specialized Domestic Violence Treatment Court (DVTC) in New Mexico. Between January 2019 and December 2024, 69 individuals volunteered for the DVTC, with 49 graduating successfully, reflecting a graduation rate of approximately 78%. The study’s purpose was to determine whether a sample of offenders (N=22) reported higher levels of ACEs compared to the U.S. general population. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the shared lived experiences of women affected by marital infidelity in North Carolina. Physical, emotional, and spiritual issues arise due to betrayal and brokenness of secure attachments. Findings from this study revealed that some shared emotional issues women faced following infidelity included depression, guilt, self-blame, and low self-esteem. Some issues took longer to recover from than others, such as loss of trust, low self-esteem, and varying physical health-related issues. This study presents one of the largest qualitative samples of exited female survivors of commercial sexual exploitation in the United States to date. One hundred and eighty-nine female survivors participated in a national survey. The participants described their motivations for exiting commercial sexual exploitation, the pathways they followed, the forces that hindered their exit and increased their recidivism, and the assistance they received that ensured a permanent exit. Some of the findings challenge popular narratives on recidivism rates and what keeps women in exploitation, revealing complex relational, behavioral, economic, and systemic influences. This study examines the relationships between demographics, risk factors, and protective factors with mental distress among Chitimacha Tribal adolescents aged 12 to 18. Using a Positive Youth Development framework, the research aimed to identify the prevalence of mental distress, trauma, discrimination, and protective factors, as well as their collective and individual impacts on mental health. Data were collected through online surveys completed by 73 participants residing on or near the Chitimacha Tribal Reservation. Students who participated in this study were enrolled at a community college in Southern California. The students were interviewed using an online format. The objective of this study is to map a decade (2015–2025) of Indonesian research on self-harm among secondary-school students and undergraduates while examining its implications for guidance and counseling practice in schools and universities. The methods applied were a bilingual, population-bounded bibliometric design in which data were retrieved from Google Scholar using Publish or Perish (PoP), screened through a PRISMA-guided protocol, and analyzed with performance indicators such as annual output, sources, top documents, and citation trends, complemented by science-mapping techniques including keyword harmonization and VOSviewer-based co-word networks.
