Remarks On A Paper Of Ahmad, Ahmad And Ahmed, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Ahmad et al. (2015) consider a Transmuted Kumaraswamy distribution and study certain properties of their distribution. In the title of their paper they mention characterization of this distribution, but no characterization are presented in their paper. In the present short note, we establish certain characterizations of the Transmuted Kumaraswamy distribution in three directions.

The Transmuted Weibull-Pareto Distribution, Ahmed Z. Afify, Haitham M. Yousof, Nadeem Shafique Butt, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A new generalization of the Weibull-Pareto distribution called the transmuted Weibull-Pareto distribution is proposed and studied. Various mathematical properties of this distribution including ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and order statistics are derived. The method of maximum likelihood is used for estimating the model parameters. The flexibility of the new lifetime model is illustrated by means of an application to a real data set.

Almost Perfect Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones Jan 2016

Almost Perfect Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We call a restriction semigroup almost perfect if it is proper and the least congruence that identifies all its projections is perfect. We show that any such semigroup is isomorphic to a ‘W -product’ W(T,Y)W(T,Y), where T is a monoid, Y is a semilattice and there is a homomorphism from T into the inverse semigroup TIYTIY of isomorphisms between ideals of Y. Conversely, all such W-products are almost perfect. Since we also show that every restriction semigroup has an easily computed cover of this type, the combination yields a ‘McAlister-type’ theorem for all restriction semigroups. …

A New Right Tailed Test Of The Ratio Of Variances, Elizabeth Rochelle Lesser Jan 2016

A New Right Tailed Test Of The Ratio Of Variances, Elizabeth Rochelle Lesser

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is important to be able to compare variances efficiently and accurately regardless of the parent populations. This study proposes a new right tailed test for the ratio of two variances using the Edgeworth’s expansion. To study the Type I error rate and Power performance, simulation was performed on the new test with various combinations of symmetric and skewed distributions. It is found to have more controlled Type I error rates than the existing tests. Additionally, it also has sufficient power. Therefore, the newly derived test provides a good robust alternative to the already existing methods.

On Six-Parameter Fréchet Distribution: Properties And Applications, Haitham M. Yousof, Ahmed Z. Afify, Abd El Hadi N. Ebraheim, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Nadeem Shafique Butt

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This paper introduces a new generalization of the transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution of Afify et al. (2015), using Kumaraswamy generalized family. The new model is referred to as Kumaraswamy transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution. This model contains sixty two sub-models as special cases such as the Kumaraswamy transmuted Fréchet, Kumaraswamy transmuted Marshall-Olkin, generalized inverse Weibull and Kumaraswamy Gumbel type II distributions, among others. Various mathematical properties of the proposed distribution including closed forms for ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions and Rényi and η-entropies are derived. The unknown parameters of the new distribution are estimated using the maximum …

Is The Time Allocated To Review Patent Applications Inducing Examiners To Grant Invalid Patents?: Evidence From Micro-Level Application Data, Michael D. Frakes, Melissa F. Wasserman Jan 2016

Is The Time Allocated To Review Patent Applications Inducing Examiners To Grant Invalid Patents?: Evidence From Micro-Level Application Data, Michael D. Frakes, Melissa F. Wasserman

Faculty Scholarship

We explore how examiner behavior is altered by the time allocated for reviewing patent applications. Insufficient examination time may hamper examiner search and rejection efforts, leaving examiners more inclined to grant invalid applications. To test this prediction, we use application-level data to trace the behavior of individual examiners over the course of a series of promotions that carry with them reductions in examination-time allocations. We find evidence demonstrating that such promotions are associated with reductions in examination scrutiny and increases in granting tendencies, as well as evidence that those additional patents being issued on the margin are of below-average quality.

Unequal Edge Inclusion Probabilities In Link-Tracing Network Sampling With Implications For Respondent-Driven Sampling, Miles Q. Ott, Krista J. Gile Jan 2016

Unequal Edge Inclusion Probabilities In Link-Tracing Network Sampling With Implications For Respondent-Driven Sampling, Miles Q. Ott, Krista J. Gile

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) is a widely adopted linktracing sampling design used to draw valid statistical inference from samples of populations for which there is no available sampling frame. RDS estimators rely upon the assumption that each edge (representing a relationship between two individuals) in the underlying network has an equal probability of being sampled. We show that this assumption is violated in even the simplest cases, and that RDS estimators are sensitive to the violation of this assumption.

A Multistep Approach To Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-Set Analysis: An Evaluation Of Power And Type I Error Of Gene-Based Tests Of Association After Pathway-Based Association Tests, Alessandra Valcarcel, Kelsey Grinde, Kaitlyn Cook, Alden Green, Nathan Tintle

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The aggregation of functionally associated variants given a priori biological information can aid in the discovery of rare variants associated with complex diseases. Many methods exist that aggregate rare variants into a set and compute a single p value summarizing association between the set of rare variants and a phenotype of interest. These methods are often called gene-based, rare variant tests of association because the variants in the set are often all contained within the same gene. A reasonable extension of these approaches involves aggregating variants across an even larger set of variants (eg, all variants contained in genes within …

A General Method For Combining Different Family-Based Rare-Variant Tests Of Association To Improve Power And Robustness Of A Wide Range Of Genetic Architectures, Alden Green, Kaitlyn Cook, Kelsey Grinde, Alessandra Valcarcel, Nathan Tintle Jan 2016

A General Method For Combining Different Family-Based Rare-Variant Tests Of Association To Improve Power And Robustness Of A Wide Range Of Genetic Architectures, Alden Green, Kaitlyn Cook, Kelsey Grinde, Alessandra Valcarcel, Nathan Tintle

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Current rare-variant, gene-based tests of association often suffer from a lack of statistical power to detect genotype-phenotype associations as a result of a lack of prior knowledge of genetic disease models combined with limited observations of extremely rare causal variants in population-based samples. The use of pedigree data, in which rare variants are often more highly concentrated than in population-based data, has been proposed as 1 possible method for enhancing power. Methods for combining multiple gene-based tests of association into a single summary p value are a robust approach to different genetic architectures when little a priori knowledge is available …

Monte Carlo Approx. Methods For Stochastic Optimization, John Fowler Jan 2016

Monte Carlo Approx. Methods For Stochastic Optimization, John Fowler

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis provides an overview of stochastic optimization (SP) problems and looks at how the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) method is used to solve them. We review several applications of this problem-solving technique that have been published in papers over the last few years. The number and variety of the examples should give an indication of the usefulness of this technique. The examples also provide opportunities to discuss important aspects of SPs and the SAA method including model assumptions, optimality gaps, the use of deterministic methods for finite sample sizes, and the accelerated Benders decomposition algorithm. We also give a …

Neutrosophic Overset, Neutrosophic Underset, And Neutrosophic Offset. Similarly For Neutrosophic Over-/Under-/Off- Logic, Probability, And Statistics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Over-/Under-/Off-Set and -Logic were defined for the first time by Smarandache in 1995 and published in 2007. They are totally different from other sets/logics/probabilities.

He extended the neutrosophic set respectively to Neutrosophic Overset {when some neutrosophic component is > 1}, Neutrosophic Underset {when some neutrosophic component is < 0}, and to Neutrosophic Offset {when some neutrosophic components are off the interval [0, 1], i.e. some neutrosophic component > 1 and other neutrosophic component < 0}.

This is no surprise with respect to the classical fuzzy set/logic, intuitionistic fuzzy set/logic, or classical/imprecise probability, where the values are not allowed outside the interval [0, 1], since our real-world has …

Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi Jan 2016

Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

In this dissertation, first we consider the problem of testing homogeneity and order in a contaminated normal model, when the data is correlated under some known covariance structure. To address this problem, we developed a moment based homogeneity and order test, and design weights for test statistics to increase power for homogeneity test. We applied our test to microarray about Down’s syndrome. This dissertation also studies a singular Bayesian information criterion (sBIC) for a bivariate hierarchical mixture model with varying weights, and develops a new data dependent information criterion (sFLIC).We apply our model and criteria to birth- weight and gestational …

Multi-State Models With Missing Covariates, Wenjie Lou Jan 2016

Multi-State Models With Missing Covariates, Wenjie Lou

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Multi-state models have been widely used to analyze longitudinal event history data obtained in medical studies. The tools and methods developed recently in this area require the complete observed datasets. While, in many applications measurements on certain components of the covariate vector are missing on some study subjects. In this dissertation, several likelihood-based methodologies were proposed to deal with datasets with different types of missing covariates efficiently when applying multi-state models.

Firstly, a maximum observed data likelihood method was proposed when the data has a univariate missing pattern and the missing covariate is a categorical variable. The construction of the …

Statistical Methods For Handling Intentional Inaccurate Responders, Kristen J. Mcquerry Jan 2016

Statistical Methods For Handling Intentional Inaccurate Responders, Kristen J. Mcquerry

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

In self-report data, participants who provide incorrect responses are known as intentional inaccurate responders. This dissertation provides statistical analyses for address intentional inaccurate responses in the data.

Previous work with adolescent self-report, labeled survey participants who intentionally provide inaccurate answers as mischievous responders. This phenomenon also occurs in clinical research. For example, pregnant women who smoke may report that they are nonsmokers. Our advantage is that we do not solely have self-report answers and can verify responses with lab values. Currently, there is no clear method for handling these intentional inaccurate respondents when it comes to making statistical inferences.

We …

Topics In Logistic Regression Analysis, Zhiheng Xie Jan 2016

Topics In Logistic Regression Analysis, Zhiheng Xie

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Discrete-time Markov chains have been used to analyze the transition of subjects from intact cognition to dementia with mild cognitive impairment and global impairment as intervening transient states, and death as competing risk. A multinomial logistic regression model is used to estimate the probability distribution in each row of the one-step transition matrix that correspond to the transient states. We investigate some goodness of fit tests for a multinomial distribution with covariates to assess the fit of this model to the data. We propose a modified chi-square test statistic and a score test statistic for the multinomial assumption in each …

Developing An Alternative Way To Analyze Nanostring Data, Shu Shen Jan 2016

Developing An Alternative Way To Analyze Nanostring Data, Shu Shen

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Nanostring technology provides a new method to measure gene expressions. It's more sensitive than microarrays and able to do more gene measurements than RT-PCR with similar sensitivity. This system produces counts for each target gene and tabulates them. Counts can be normalized by using an Excel macro or nSolver before analysis. Both methods rely on data normalization prior to statistical analysis to identify differentially expressed genes. Alternatively, we propose to model gene expressions as a function of positive controls and reference gene measurements. Simulations and examples are used to compare this model with Nanostring normalization methods. The results show that …

Statistical Inference On Dynamical Systems, Hongyuan Wang Jan 2016

Statistical Inference On Dynamical Systems, Hongyuan Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

The ordinary differential equation (ODE) is one representative and popular tool in modeling dynamical systems, which are widely implemented in physics, biology, economics, chemistry and biomedical sciences, etc. Because of the importance of dynamical systems in scientific studies, they are the main focuses of my dissertation.

The first chapter of the dissertation is introduction and literature review, which mainly focuses on numerical integration algorithms of ODEs that are difficult to solve analytically, as well as derivative-free optimization algorithms for the so-called inverse problem.

The second chapter is on the estimation method based on numerical solvers of differential equations. We start …

Statistical Methods For Environmental Exposure Data Subject To Detection Limits, Yuchen Yang Jan 2016

Statistical Methods For Environmental Exposure Data Subject To Detection Limits, Yuchen Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

In this dissertation, we develop unified and efficient nonparametric statistical methods for estimating and comparing environmental exposure distributions in presence of detection limits. In the first part, we propose a kernel-smoothed nonparametric estimator for the exposure distribution without imposing any independence assumption between the exposure level and detection limit. We show that the proposed estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed estimator performs well in practical situations. A colon cancer study is provided for illustration. In the second part, we develop a class of test statistics to compare exposure distributions between two groups by using …

Statistical Inference On Trimmed Means, Lorenz Curves, And Partial Area Under Roc Curves By Empirical Likelihood Method, Yumin Zhao Jan 2016

Statistical Inference On Trimmed Means, Lorenz Curves, And Partial Area Under Roc Curves By Empirical Likelihood Method, Yumin Zhao

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Traditionally the inference on trimmed means, Lorenz Curves, and partial AUC (pAUC) under ROC curves have been done based on the asymptotic normality of the statistics. Based on the theory of empirical likelihood, in this dissertation we developed novel methods to do statistical inferences on trimmed means, Lorenz curves, and pAUC. A common characteristic among trimmed means, Lorenz curves, and pAUC is that their inferences are not based on the whole set of samples. Qin and Tsao (2002), Qin et al. (2013), and Qin et al. (2011) recently published their re- searches on the inferences of trimmed means, Lorenz curves, …

Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang Jan 2016

Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

This paper intend to develop novel statistical methods to improve genomic data analysis, especially for differential analysis. We considered two different data type: NanoString nCounter data and somatic mutation data. For NanoString nCounter data, we develop a novel differential expression detection method. The method considers a generalized linear model of the negative binomial family to characterize count data and allows for multi-factor design. Data normalization is incorporated in the model framework through data normalization parameters, which are estimated from control genes embedded in the nCounter system. For somatic mutation data, we develop beta-binomial model-based approaches to identify highly or lowly …

Evaluating A Bystander Intervention Program On Reproductive Coercion: Using Quasi-Experimental Design Strategies To Address Methodologic Issues In Randomized Community Prevention Trials, Catherine P. Starnes Jan 2016

Evaluating A Bystander Intervention Program On Reproductive Coercion: Using Quasi-Experimental Design Strategies To Address Methodologic Issues In Randomized Community Prevention Trials, Catherine P. Starnes

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Community (or cluster) randomized trials are trials in which communities or groups of individuals (clusters) are randomized to receive the intervention of interest. Community randomized trials frequently more closely resemble a natural experiment than a randomized controlled trial (RCT) following intervention allocation. In particular, the effects of non-compliance can pose methodologic challenges in estimating the intervention effect which may require a quasiexperimental approach in order to minimize bias.

The motivating example to illustrate these issues is the Green Dot High School (GDHS) study. The GDHS study was a longitudinal, cluster-randomized controlled trial designed to assess the effectiveness of a bystander …

Existence Of Periodic Solutions For A Quantum Volterra Equation, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer Jan 2016

Existence Of Periodic Solutions For A Quantum Volterra Equation, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to study the periodicity properties of functions that arise in quantum calculus, which has been emerging as an important branch of mathematics due to its various applications in physics and other related fields. The paper has two components. First, a relation between two existing periodicity notions is established. Second, the existence of periodic solutions of a q-Volterra integral equation, which is a general integral form of a first order q-difference equation, is obtained. At the end, some examples are provided. These examples show the effectiveness of the relation between the two periodicity notions that …

Positive Solutions For A Singular Fourth Order Nonlocal Boundary Value Problem, John M. Davis, Paul W. Eloe, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Positive solutions are obtained for the fourth order nonlocal boundary value problem, u(4)=f(x,u), 0 < x < 1, u(0) = u''(0) = u'(1) = u''(1) - u''(2/3)=0, where f(x,u) is singular at x = 0, x=1, y=0, and may be singular at y=∞. The solutions are shown to exist at fixed points for an operator that is decreasing with respect to a cone.

Almost Automorphic Solutions Of Delayed Neutral Dynamic Systems On Hybrid Domains, Murat Adıvar, Halis Can Koyuncuoğlu, Youssef Raffoul Jan 2016

Almost Automorphic Solutions Of Delayed Neutral Dynamic Systems On Hybrid Domains, Murat Adıvar, Halis Can Koyuncuoğlu, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study the existence of almost automorphic solutions of the delayed neutral dynamic system on hybrid domains that are additively periodic. We use exponential dichotomy and prove uniqueness of projector of exponential dichotomy to obtain some limit results leading to sufficient conditions for existence of almost automorphic solutions to neutral system. Unlike the existing literature we prove our existence results without assuming boundedness of the coefficient matrices in the system. Hence, we significantly improve the results in the existing literature. Finally, we also provide an existence result for an almost periodic solutions of the system.

Stochastic Models Of Evidence Accumulation In Changing Environments, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Zachary P. Kilpatrick, Krešimir Josić Jan 2016

Stochastic Models Of Evidence Accumulation In Changing Environments, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Zachary P. Kilpatrick, Krešimir Josić

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Organisms and ecological groups accumulate evidence to make decisions. Classic experiments and theoretical studies have explored this process when the correct choice is fixed during each trial. However, we live in a constantly changing world. What effect does such impermanence have on classical results about decision making? To address this question we use sequential analysis to derive a tractable model of evidence accumulation when the correct option changes in time. Our analysis shows that ideal observers discount prior evidence at a rate determined by the volatility of the environment, and the dynamics of evidence accumulation is governed by the information …

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Panel Count Data And Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Bin Yao Jan 2016

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Panel Count Data And Interval-Censored Failure Time Data, Bin Yao

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses three important research topics on semiparametric regression analysis of panel count data and interval-censored data. Both types of data arise commonly in real-life studies in many fields such as epidemiology, social science, and medical research. In these studies, subjects are usually examined multiple times at periodical or irregular follow-up examinations. For panel count data, the response variable is the counts of some recurrent events, whose exact occurrence times are usually unknown. For interval-censored data, the response variable is the time to some events of interest, often called survival time or failure time, and the exact response time …

A Saddlepoint Approximation To Left-Tailed Hypothesis Tests Of Variance For Non-Normal Populations, Tyler L. Grimes Jan 2016

A Saddlepoint Approximation To Left-Tailed Hypothesis Tests Of Variance For Non-Normal Populations, Tyler L. Grimes

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When the variance of a single population needs to be assessed, the well-known chi-squared test of variance is often used but relies heavily on its normality assumption. For non-normal populations, few alternative tests have been developed to conduct left tailed hypothesis tests of variance. This thesis outlines a method for generating new test statistics using a saddlepoint approximation. Several novel test statistics are proposed. The type-I error rates and power of each test are evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation study. One of the proposed test statistics, R_gamma2, controls type-I error rates better than existing tests, while having comparable power. …
