The Multiple Admission Factor (Maf) In Small Area Variation Analysis, Kevin Cain, Paula Diehr Dec 1992

The Multiple Admission Factor (Maf) In Small Area Variation Analysis, Kevin Cain, Paula Diehr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Small area variation analysis are often based on area-level data such as the total number of hospital admissions within an area, rather than person-level data. Such analysis often make the assumption that the number of admissions within a small area follow a Poisson distribution. This may not be a reasonable assumption when multiple admissions per person are possible. In this case, the multiple admission factor (MAF) can be used to adjust for the extra variance introduced by multiple admissions. In this article, data from Washington State are used to estimate the multiple admission rate and the MAF for each modifed …

Identifiability Of Semiconductor Defects From Lbic Images, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito Dec 1992

Identifiability Of Semiconductor Defects From Lbic Images, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The identifiability of defects in a semiconductor from its laser-beam-induced current (LBIC) image is studied. It is shown that the LBIC technique is reliable for detecting any spatial defects in the semiconductor material. Continuous dependence of the current measurements on the spatial defects is proved, and sensitivity is also discussed in certain cases.

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera Dec 1992

Object Tracking Through Adaptive Correlation, Dennis A. Montera

Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the use of a correlation based system to track, an object through a series of images based on templates derived from previous image frames. The ability to track is extended to sequences which include multiple objects of interest within the field of view. This is accomplishes by comparing the height and shape of the template autocorrelation to the peaks in the correlation of the template with the next scene. The result is to identify the region in the next scene which best matches the designated target. In addition to correlation plane postprocessing, an adaptive window is used …

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Vacuum Filter Brown Stock Washing System Using Distribution Sampling, Edison G. Yiu Dec 1992

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Vacuum Filter Brown Stock Washing System Using Distribution Sampling, Edison G. Yiu

Masters Theses

A probabilistic model was utilized to simulate the brown stock washing system's error due to process variability and measurement noise. Mass balances of the washing system were performed using distribution sampling. This model relies on a nonlinear relationship between displacement and dilution, which permitted the generation of displacement ratio based upon wash liquor ratio. Experimental trials were performed on a pilotscale rotary vacuum single-stage washer. Nonlinear first-order relationship appears to characterize a pilotscale washer adequately. Differences were observed between the means and standard deviations of the measured results compared to the simulation output. Future work is needed to identify the …

An In Vitro Study Comparing The Conventional Step-Back Instrumentation Technique To A Combination Step-Back/Ultrasonic Technique, James A. Eberhardt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cleaning and shaping the root canal system is an important phase of endodontic therapy, and must be performed thoroughly and completely if successful root canal therapy is to be expected. A number of investigators have compared different methods of cleaning and shaping of the root canal system. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the conventional step-back technique with that of a combination step-back/ultrasonic technique. This combination technique is a modification of the conventional step-back technique using an ultrasonic instrument alternately with hand instrumentation. Utilizing 40 canals from extracted human mandibular molar teeth with a curvature …

Radar Cross Section Models For Limited Aspect Angle Windows, Mark C. Robinson Dec 1992

Radar Cross Section Models For Limited Aspect Angle Windows, Mark C. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a method for building Radar Cross Section (RCS) models of aircraft based on static data taken from limited aspect angle windows. These models statistically characterize static RCS. This is done to show that a limited number of samples can be used to effectively characterize static aircraft RCS. The optimum models are determined by performing both a Kolmogorov and a Chi-Square goodness-of-fit test comparing the static RCS data with a variety of probability density functions (pdf) that are known to be effective at approximating the static RCS of aircraft. The optimum parameter estimator is also determined by the …

The Management Of Replicated Data, Hsueh-Chi Shih, C. Y. Ho, S. Alptekin Sep 1992

The Management Of Replicated Data, Hsueh-Chi Shih, C. Y. Ho, S. Alptekin

Computer Science Technical Reports

Data replication, which has the benefits of improving system availability and read performance, proved to be indispensable to many database applications. In a replicated database, the one-copy serializability of transaction executions can be ensured by employing a replica control mechanism on top of the traditional concurrency control mechanism. This work contains two replica control algorithms and a read-only transaction processing algorithm. Both replica control algorithms handle multiple site, communication and partitioning failures. The replica control algorithms achieve read operation efficiency by always translating a logical read operation into one local physical read operation and by taking advantage of the locality …

An Animation System For Shift Reduce Parsers, M. S. Mandl, T. J. Sager, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper presents the design and implementation of the Parse Display Utility (POU) system. This system introduces a mechanism to augment traditional methods of exploring parsing theory by providing a PRESENTATION scheme which allows a user to view the operation of a shift-reduce parser.

The overall operation of the tool revolves around an LALR (LookAhead LR) parser/parser generator and is managed by a Graphical User-Interface (GUI) developed using Borland's Turbo Vision product. The GUI allows access to a facility which draws derivation trees in Turbo Pascal graphics. This parse tree facility utilizes an algorithm which can easily be ported to …

Teaching Introductory Statistics: A Graphical Relationship Between The Cumulative Distribution Function And The Probability Distribution Function, Dwight Adamnson, Scott Fausti Sep 1992

Teaching Introductory Statistics: A Graphical Relationship Between The Cumulative Distribution Function And The Probability Distribution Function, Dwight Adamnson, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Introductory statistics textbooks typically develop the concept of continuous random variables with a discussion of only the variables' probability distribution function and omit any discussion of the cumulative distribution function. The cumulative distribution function, however, is useful in developing the concepts of a normal distribution, the standard normal distribution and the probability of a continuous random variable falls within a specific range of values since the standard normal statistical table is derived from the cumulative distribution function. This paper develops a simple graphical relationship between a continuous random variables' cumulative distribution function and its probability distribution function that can be …

Examination Of Psychological Type And Preferred Negotiation Tactics And Strategies Of Contract Negotiators, John P. Hebert, Alan J. Meade

Theses and Dissertations

This research identified the psychological types of government and industry contract negotiators and determined whether their preference for using negotiation tactics and strategies were correlated with their respective psychological types. A survey consisting of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and a questionnaire concerning use of negotiation tactics and strategies was mailed to 2,000 contracting professionals of the National Contract Management Association (NCMA). During May and June 1992, 627 usable surveys were received. The MBTI results were paired with the responses to the negotiation tactics and strategies questionnaire. These results were analyzed on a microcomputer using the DBase IV, Excel, and …

The Development Of A Performance Measurement Concept For The Royal Australian Air Force, David R. Mcdonald Sep 1992

The Development Of A Performance Measurement Concept For The Royal Australian Air Force, David R. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

he Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) needed to develop performance measurements (PMs) to support its Program Management and Budgeting (PMB) System. This research assessed the use of the concepts of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to develop those PMs. The literature indicated that: traditional accounting PMs were not always suitable in an environment of continuous improvement; Activity Based Costing did not provide the required measures; and non-financial PMs were supplanting the older measures. Further, governments faced unique problems in developing PMs, particularly in defining the outcomes to be measured. Using the Critical Theory and Action Research methodologies, and a case …

This research created a graphics oriented computer program which was used as part of a Visualization, Verbalization, Algorithization and Mathematization (VVAM) learning protocol. The curriculum for this research was the study of variance/covariance structures of bivariate and multivariate normal populations. The program displays the geometric images corresponding to the various possible covariance structures. These images facilitate and encourage experiment-based self discovery learning. The program encourages the student to take an active role in their own education. The program created is self contained, calculating all the statistical values it requires to create the various geometric images. The students have complete control …

Trial By Jury Or Judge: Transcending Empiricism, Kevin M. Clermont, Theodore Eisenberg Jul 1992

Trial By Jury Or Judge: Transcending Empiricism, Kevin M. Clermont, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Pity the civil jury, seen by some as the sickest organ of a sick system. Yet the jury has always been controversial. One might suppose that, with so much at stake for so long, we would all know a lot about the ways juries differ from judges in their behavior. In fact, we know remarkably little. This Article provides the first large-scale comparison of plaintiff win rates and recoveries in civil cases tried before juries and judges. In two of the most controversial areas of modern tort law--product liability and medical malpractice--the win rates substantially differ from other cases' win …

Unit Roots, Cointegration And Spot And Forward Rates Of The Rupees, P G Apte Jun 1992

Unit Roots, Cointegration And Spot And Forward Rates Of The Rupees, P G Apte

IIMB Management Review

The hypothesis of unbiasedness of the forward exchange rate as a predictor of the future spot rate has been subjected to extensive empirical testing. some researchers use the level form specification in which the actual spot rate is regressed on the k-period forward rate k periods age. While other use the percent change specification in which the k-period log change in spot rate is regressed on the forward premium /discount. The resuits from the two specifications are widely different and often contradictory. The problem lies in the presence of unit roots in both the spot and forward rate series and …

Inverse Problems For Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor Contact Resistivity, Weifu Fang, Ellis Cumberbatch Jun 1992

Inverse Problems For Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor Contact Resistivity, Weifu Fang, Ellis Cumberbatch

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Inverse problems arising from the identification of transistor contact resistivity and contact window location are studied. A one-point boundary measurement of the potential is shown to be sufficient to identify each from a one-parameter monotone family, and such identification is both stable and continuously dependent on the parameter. For a nonmonotone family of locations with resistivity given, similar results are obtained for measurement made on almost all boundary points.

Soft Tissue Changes Of The Upper Lip Following Isolated Le Fort I Osteotomies, Kendall E. James Jun 1992

Soft Tissue Changes Of The Upper Lip Following Isolated Le Fort I Osteotomies, Kendall E. James

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pre-operative (T-1) and post-operative (T-3) radiographs were obtained and traced for fifty-one non-growing patients who had undergone isolated Le Fort I osteotomies. These tracings were then digitized with the results arranged in a data file and subjected to statistical analysis. The purpose of this study was to establish ratios for certain hard to soft tissue movements that could be used to aid the clinician in post-surgical soft tissue profile prediction. The results showed that even though a large sample was used, individual patient variability remained high particularly in the horizontal directions. Most ratios found in this study were consistent with …

Condylar Angulations As Related To Submental-Vertex Radiographs, Jady L. Chiakowsky Jun 1992

Condylar Angulations As Related To Submental-Vertex Radiographs, Jady L. Chiakowsky

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pretreatment submental-vertex radiographs were obtained for 637 adolescent patients (307 males, 330 females) who had presented themselves for orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the relationship between condylar angulations and depth of cut with the variables: age, sex, and race, and (2) establish normative values for the categories studied. The results indicated that no significant differences existed between the condylar angulations for the variables measured. However, significant differences did exist between the depth of cut for the variables measured and there was significant interaction between age and race with respect to the depth of cut. …

Common Moment Sets Of Complementary Graphs, Hang Chen Jun 1992

Common Moment Sets Of Complementary Graphs, Hang Chen

Dissertations

Two sequences of nonnegative integers have the k^th common moment if they have equal sums of k^th powers. We intend to study common moment sets of the degree sequences of complementary graphs, and similarly, of the score sequences of complementary tournaments.

In Chapter I, we first study common moment sets of arbitrary sequences of nonnegative integers. Some basic concepts are introduced. The relations between characteristic functions and initial common moments are discovered. We extend Hua’s discussion of the Tarry-Escott problem. We conclude that any finite subset of nonnegative integers can be a common moment set of some sequences, and conversely, …

Effects Of Nonsymmetric Release Times On Rate Monotonic Scheduling, R. G. Karl, T. L. Lo, D. C. St. Clair May 1992

Effects Of Nonsymmetric Release Times On Rate Monotonic Scheduling, R. G. Karl, T. L. Lo, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper discusses problems associated with scheduling periodic tasks in a hard, real-time processing or computing environment using a static-priority, preemptive-resume operating system . The scheduling problems associated with a task set containing a single periodic task which has two fixed release periods of unequal length are examined. Some real-world applications may require task release times which are periodic, but whose tasking periods are not symmetric. A scheduling algorithm for task sets with a single nonsymmetric task has been developed for staticpriority, preemptive-resume operating systems. The nonsymmetric scheduling algorithm is based on the rate monotonic scheduling algorithm which assigns higher …

Design Of Backpropagation Neural Network Architectures Using A Decision Tree Classifier, B. M. Van Horn, D. C. St. Clair May 1992

Design Of Backpropagation Neural Network Architectures Using A Decision Tree Classifier, B. M. Van Horn, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

The backpropagation neural network algorithm is a popular machine learning methodology. One difficulty with using the algorithm is that the network architecture must be designed before learning can occur. This includes deciding the number of layers, the number of nodes in each layer, and the number of connections. Traditionally this problem is solved by heuristics gained by an expert through experience.

This paper presents an algorithm for using ID3 decision trees to design the network architecture. Previous approaches rely on binary decision trees. The proposed technique utilizes n-ary trees. These trees are easier to understand, are better suited for continuous-valued …

Optimizing Accuracy And Generalization In Numeric Classification Systems, M. D. Walters, D. C. St. Clair May 1992

Optimizing Accuracy And Generalization In Numeric Classification Systems, M. D. Walters, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

Classifier systems are knowledge-based learning algorithms that take training instances as input and produce a set of rules as output. The classifier systems focused on in this paper represent the knowledge they learn in the form of decision trees, and are built upon Quinlan's [ 1986] inductive algorithm ID3.

The ID3 algorithm suffers from the inability to easily and effectively handle domains with numeric-valued attributes. Numeric attributes are those whose values are taken from a continuous domain or from a domain with a large number of discrete values. A number of approaches have been developed for extending ID3 to handle …

The Identification And Processing Of Don't-Care Attribute Values In Id3 Decision Tree Construction, P. D. Dorr, D. C. St. Clair May 1992

The Identification And Processing Of Don't-Care Attribute Values In Id3 Decision Tree Construction, P. D. Dorr, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

ID3 is most successful when used with sets of training and testing data that contain no missing attribute values. Many times, however, real-world domains have attributes with missing values. Sometimes these attribute values may not be needed to classify an instance. Such attribute values are called don't-care attribute values. In other cases, the values are needed but are unavailable. These values are called unknown attribute values. This paper describes the difference between unknown and don't-care attribute values and discusses several ways of identifying don't-care attribute values in ID3. Numerical results are described which validate the practicality of these approaches.

Network Key Management In A Large Distributed Environment, J. J. Stapleton, D. C. St. Clair May 1992

Network Key Management In A Large Distributed Environment, J. J. Stapleton, D. C. St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

The technique of using encryption for protecting information in a network environment involves managing encryption keys within that same network. In large distributed networks the goal of achieving a secure environment requires a secure method of performing network key management. Network security, system security, and application security by means of data encryption rely on encryption keys remaining secret.

Both international and domestic standards organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) address the issues of encryption through various standards. However, these standards discuss methods …

The Application Of A Statistical Trend Analysis Program To Ground-Water Quality Monitoring Data From Eight Western Michigan Solid Waste Landfills, Amy Decosta Lachance Apr 1992

The Application Of A Statistical Trend Analysis Program To Ground-Water Quality Monitoring Data From Eight Western Michigan Solid Waste Landfills, Amy Decosta Lachance

Masters Theses

A statistical analysis and interpretation of ground-water chemistry data from eight landfills in Western Michigan was performed. Data were collected over approximately the past ten years, pursuant to the requirements of Michigan's Solid Waste Management Act. A statistical regression model was used to reduce the data to identifiable trends and estimated magnitudes. These results were analyzed with respect to each landfill's characteristics and hydrogeological setting. Comparisons were made concerning the landfills' relative potential for environmental harm. Also, the effectiveness and applicability of this model to the analysis of ground-water monitoring data was assessed.

It was concluded that this analysis and …

Inside The Quiet Revolution In Products Liability, Theodore Eisenberg, James A. Henderson Jr. Apr 1992

Inside The Quiet Revolution In Products Liability, Theodore Eisenberg, James A. Henderson Jr.

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

"A bullet in the head of products liability reform." Thus did a lobbyist orally characterize our article in this law review, The Quiet Revolution in Products Liability, describing declining plaintiff success in products liability cases in the 1980s. From the coverage and criticism the Quiet Revolution received around the country and around the world, the trends we discovered struck many as surprising enough to be newsworthy and others as sufficiently threatening to warrant a special response. Products liability's sustained presence on state and federal legislative agendas warrants continuing and expanding the study begun in the Quiet Revolution.

A Progressive Disease Model For Doubly-Censred Bivariate Survival Data That Accommodates Covariate Information, Hilmi F. Yahya Apr 1992

A Progressive Disease Model For Doubly-Censred Bivariate Survival Data That Accommodates Covariate Information, Hilmi F. Yahya

Dissertations

A model for the natural history of a progressive disease is developed. The model has three disease states and can be expressed as the joint distribution of two survival random variables.

Covariate information is incorporated into the model using the proportional hazards model for the marginal distributions. The model will also accommodate data with observations which are censored on one or both of the survival random variables.

The likelihood function for censored data is exhibited for finding the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters and their standard errors for testing the effects of the covariates. The method used to obtain …

Singular Ergodic Control For Multidimensional Gaussian Processes, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin, M. I. Taksar Mar 1992

Singular Ergodic Control For Multidimensional Gaussian Processes, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin, M. I. Taksar

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

A multidimensional Wiener process is controlled by an additive process of bounded variation. A convex nonnegative function measures the cost associated with the position of the state process, and the cost of controlling is proportional to the displacement induced. We minimize a limiting time-average expected (ergodic) criterion. Under reasonable assumptions, we prove that the optimal discounted cost converges to the optimal ergodic cost. Moreover, under some additional conditions there exists a convex Lipschitz continuous function solution to the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation which provides an optimal stationary feedback control.
