Optimal Experimental Plan For Multi-Level Stress Testing Under Progressively Hybrid Censoring, David Kojo Amakye May 2025

Optimal Experimental Plan For Multi-Level Stress Testing Under Progressively Hybrid Censoring, David Kojo Amakye

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Reliability analysis is essential for understanding how products perform over time, particularly in environments where failure data is limited or costly to obtain. One effective approach is multi-level stress testing, where test units are subjected to varying levels of stress to accelerate failures and extract more information within constrained timeframes. This study presents a novel optimization-based framework for designing life-testing experiments under progressively Type-II hybrid censoring, assuming Weibull lifetime distributions. Leveraging a Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) algorithm, we determine efficient allocations of test units and censoring parameters across multiple stress levels to enhance the precision of estimates of the model …

Reliability Analysis Of Long‑Span Concrete Box Arch Bridge Under Temperature Effect Combinations, Zheng Junlin, Jiang Youbao, Zheng Xinhao, Lu Naiwei

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

The existing design methods for concrete arch bridge structures do not consider the random characteristics of the eccentricity generated by load effects and overlook the influence of stochastic eccentricity on structural reliability. To address this deficiency,a calculation model for eccentricity under temperature effect combinations was derived. The random characteristics of eccentricity for different sections of the main arch of concrete arch bridges and their sectional bearing capacities were analyzed under different load parameter combinations.By utilizing the Monte Carlo method, reliability indices were computed for different sections of the main arch and different load parameter combinations after considering the random characteristics of eccentricity. The results …

Effects Of Measurement Error In Student Pre-Post Test Score On The Recovery Of The Estimates Of Teachers Value-Added Scores, Merlin J. Kamgue

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Background: Value-added models (VAMs) are statistical tools used to gauge a teacher’s impact on student performance by analyzing standardized test scores. These models project students’ future performance based on past scores and compare the projection to actual outcomes, accounting for differences in student backgrounds. However, the standard error of measurement (SEM) inherent in all measurement tools is often overlooked in VAMs. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to investigate the impact of test reliability on teacher and school score estimates within a Bayesian framework. We will precisely manipulate the reliability of standardized tests by adjusting the standard error of …

A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes Oct 2023

A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is a focus within the behavioral/social sciences on non-physical, psychological constructs (i.e., constructs). These constructs are indirectly measured using measurement instruments that consist of questions that capture the manifestations of these constructs. The indirect nature of measuring constructs results in a need of ensuring that measurement instruments are reliable. The most popular statistic used to estimate reliability is coefficient alpha as it is easy to compute and has properties that make it desirable to use. Coefficient alpha’s popularity has resulted in a wide breadth of research into its qualities. Notably, research about coefficient alpha’s distribution has led to developments …

Parametric And Reliability Estimation Of The Kumaraswamy Generalized Distribution Based On Record Values, Mohd. Arshad, Qazi J. Azhad Jan 2022

Parametric And Reliability Estimation Of The Kumaraswamy Generalized Distribution Based On Record Values, Mohd. Arshad, Qazi J. Azhad

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A general family of distributions, namely Kumaraswamy generalized family of (Kw-G) distribution, is considered for estimation of the unknown parameters and reliability function based on record data from Kw-G distribution. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) are derived for unknown parameters and reliability function, along with its confidence intervals. A Bayesian study is carried out under symmetric and asymmetric loss functions in order to find the Bayes estimators for unknown parameters and reliability function. Future record values are predicted using Bayesian approach and non Bayesian approach, based on numerical examples and a monte carlo simulation.

(R1239) A New Type Ii Half Logistic-G Family Of Distributions With Properties, Regression Models, System Reliability And Applications, Emrah Altun, Morad Alizadeh, Haitham M. Yousof, Mahdi Rasekhi, G. G. Hamedani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study proposes a new family of distributions based on the half logistic distribution. With the new family, the baseline distributions gain flexibility through additional shape parameters. The important statistical properties of the proposed family are derived. A new generalization of the Weibull distribution is used to introduce a location-scale regression model for the censored response variable. The utility of the introduced models is demonstrated in survival analysis and estimation of the system reliability. Three data sets are analyzed. According to the empirical results, it is observed that the proposed family gives better results than other existing models.

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce a flexible lifetime distribution called Burr III-Inverse Weibull (BIII-IW). The new proposed distribution has well-known sub-models. The BIII-IW density function includes exponential, left-skewed, right-skewed and symmetrical shapes. The BIII-IW model’s failure rate can be monotone and non-monotone depending on the parameter values. To show the importance of the BIII-IW distribution, we establish various mathematical properties such as random number generator, ordinary moments, conditional moments, residual life functions, reliability measures and characterizations. We address the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) for the BIII-IW parameters and estimate the precision of the maximum likelihood estimators via a simulation study. We consider applications …

Is The Reliability Of Objective Originality Scores Confounded By Elaboration?, Shannon Marie Maio Jan 2020

Is The Reliability Of Objective Originality Scores Confounded By Elaboration?, Shannon Marie Maio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increased use of text-mining models as a scoring mechanism for divergent thinking (DT) tasks has sparked concerns about the ways in which automated Originality scores may be influenced by other dimensions of DT, especially Elaboration. The debate centers around the question of whether too much variance in automated Originality scores is accounted for by the number of words a participant uses in a response (i.e., Elaboration), and, thus, how the influence of Elaboration can affect the reliability of Originality scores. Here, a partial correlation analysis, in conjunction with text-mining and psychometric modeling, is conducted to test the degree to …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The passing of time is an important factor for covariates in the additive and proportional hazard models. According to this idea, the extended additive hazard model (EAHM) is introduced by considering the time-varying effects of covariates and is investigated several properties of this model related to reliability analysis. In this paper, we obtain a further result for the EAHM with respect to the aging properties.

Evaluation Of Modern Missing Data Handling Methods For Coefficient Alpha, Katerina Matysova Dec 2019

Evaluation Of Modern Missing Data Handling Methods For Coefficient Alpha, Katerina Matysova

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When assessing a certain characteristic or trait using a multiple item measure, quality of that measure can be assessed by examining the reliability. To avoid multiple time points, reliability can be represented by internal consistency, which is most commonly calculated using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha. Almost every time human participants are involved in research, there is missing data involved. Missing data means that even though complete data were expected to be collected, some data are missing. Missing data can follow different patterns as well as be the result of different mechanisms. One traditional way to deal with missing data is listwise …

Cronbach’S Alpha Under Insufficient Effort Responding: An Analytic Approach, Stephen W. Carden, Trevor R. Camper, Nicholas S. Holtzman Jan 2019

Cronbach’S Alpha Under Insufficient Effort Responding: An Analytic Approach, Stephen W. Carden, Trevor R. Camper, Nicholas S. Holtzman

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Surveys commonly suffer from insufficient effort responding (IER). If not accounted for, IER can cause biases and lead to false conclusions. In particular, Cronbach’s alpha has been empirically observed to either deflate or inflate due to IER. This paper will elucidate how IER impacts Cronbach’s alpha in a variety of situations. Previous results concerning internal consistency under mixture models are extended to obtain a characterization of Cronbach’s alpha in terms of item validities, average variances, and average covariances. The characterization is then applied to contaminating distributions representing various types of IER. The discussion will provide commentary on previous simulation-based investigations, …

Parameter Estimation In Weighted Rayleigh Distribution, M. Ajami, S. M. A. Jahanshahi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A weighted model based on the Rayleigh distribution is proposed and the statistical and reliability properties of this model are presented. Some non-Bayesian and Bayesian methods are used to estimate the β parameter of proposed model. The Bayes estimators are obtained under the symmetric (squared error) and the asymmetric (linear exponential) loss functions using non-informative and reciprocal gamma priors. The performance of the estimators is assessed on the basis of their biases and relative risks under the two above-mentioned loss functions. A simulation study is constructed to evaluate the ability of considered estimation methods. The suitability of the proposed model …

Emergency Diesel-Electric Generator Set Maintenance And Test Periodicity, Stephen John Fehr Oct 2017

Emergency Diesel-Electric Generator Set Maintenance And Test Periodicity, Stephen John Fehr

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Manufacturer and industry recommendations vary considerably for maintenance and tests of emergency diesel-electric generator sets in emergency standby duty. There is little consistency among generator sets of similar technology, and manufacturers and their representatives often provide contradictory guidance. As a result, periodicity of emergency diesel-electric generator set maintenance and tests varies considerably in practice. Utilizing the framework proposed and tested by Fehr (2014), this research developed a parametric regression survival model of the reliability of modern diesel-electric generator sets in emergency standby duty as a function of maintenance, age, and cumulative run hours. A survival regression technique leveraging Cox’s (1972) …

Intraindividual Variability In Cortisol: Approaches, Illustrations, And Recommendations, Suzanne C. Segerstrom, Sandra E. Sephton, Philip M. Westgate

Psychology Faculty Publications

Most of the variance in diurnal cortisol is attributable to intraindividual variability (IIV), defined as relatively short-term, reversible changes. Multiple methods for measuring IIV have been proposed, and some have already been applied to cortisol IIV. In the present review, measurement methods are described and applied to simulated cortisol data with known underlying differences in IIV and to real cortisol data from first-year law students. More slope variance and more residual or net variance were well captured by their individual standard deviations. Explorations of reliability suggested that 10 slopes and 50 residuals result in reliable and stable estimates of the …

Quantifying Similarity In Reliability Surfaces Using The Probability Of Agreement, Nathaniel Stevens, C. M. Anderson-Cook Jan 2017

Quantifying Similarity In Reliability Surfaces Using The Probability Of Agreement, Nathaniel Stevens, C. M. Anderson-Cook

Mathematics

When separate populations exhibit similar reliability as a function of multiple explanatory variables, combining them into a single population is tempting. This can simplify future predictions and reduce uncertainty associated with estimation. However, combining these populations may introduce bias if the underlying relationships are in fact different. The probability of agreement formally and intuitively quantifies the similarity of estimated reliability surfaces across a two-factor input space. An example from the reliability literature demonstrates the utility of the approach when deciding whether to combine two populations or to keep them as distinct. New graphical summaries provide strategies for visualizing the results.

Estimation Of P(X > Y) When X And Y Are Dependent Random Variables Using Different Bivariate Sampling Schemes, Hani M. Samawi, Amal Helu, Haresh Rochani, Jingjing Yin, Daniel Linder

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

The stress-strength models have been intensively investigated in the literature in regards of estimating the reliability θ = P (X > Y) using parametric and nonparametric approaches under different sampling schemes when X and Y are independent random variables. In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating θ when (X, Y) are dependent random variables with a bivariate underlying distribution. The empirical and kernel estimates of θ = P (X > Y), based on bivariate ranked set sampling (BVRSS) are considered, when (X, Y) are paired dependent continuous random variables. The estimators obtained are compared to their counterpart, bivariate simple random …

Resolving The Issue Of How Reliability Is Related To Statistical Power: Adhering To Mathematical Definitions, Donald W. Zimmerman, Bruno D. Zumbo Nov 2015

Resolving The Issue Of How Reliability Is Related To Statistical Power: Adhering To Mathematical Definitions, Donald W. Zimmerman, Bruno D. Zumbo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Reliability in classical test theory is a population-dependent concept, defined as a ratio of true-score variance and observed-score variance, where observed-score variance is a sum of true and error components. On the other hand, the power of a statistical significance test is a function of the total variance, irrespective of its decomposition into true and error components. For that reason, the reliability of a dependent variable is a function of the ratio of true-score variance and observed-score variance, whereas statistical power is a function of the sum of the same two variances. Controversies about how reliability is related to statistical …
