Bridge Damage Detection And Bim Localization Methods Based On Image Recognition, Li Yu, Guo Hongjun
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To overcome insufficient information of 2D detection data in traditional bridge maintenance, which hinders precise decision-making,this study proposed an automated method based on deep learning and structure from motion (SfM ) technology, which realized the complete process from image recognition to the accurate mapping of damage information in a building information model (BIM ).First, the YOLOv 8 deep learning model was used to automatically detect bridge surface damage.Second, the SfM technology was applied for the local 3D reconstruction of the damage area and to determine the 3D coordinates of the damage. Then, the least squares method was used to align the local coordinate system with the …
Bending Capacity And Strengthening Design With Bonding Steel Plates Of Concrete Sections In French Standards, Wu Zi
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In the French general technical clauses widely used in Francophone African countries, only the calculation principles for the bending capacity of normal concrete sections are provided, with explicit formulas not listed, and the strengthening design of structures is not involved.According to the fundamental principles of concrete structures and French standard regulations, the calculation formulas for the bending capacity of normal concrete sections were derived. On the basis of the assumptions of strengthening design, calculation formulas for strengthening with bonding steel plates were derived.Through practical engineering calculations conducted on the VDN Expressway project in Senegal, the applicability and reliability of the proposed formulas were verified. This study can offer …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Tunnel Rock Mass Integrity Based On Mwd Technology, Zhang Kunmu, Peng Hao, Liang Ming, Han Yu, Song Guanxian
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In tunnel construction, the quantitative evaluation of rock mass integrity heavily relies on information from the exposed face, and there are challenges when drilling data is used for integrity evaluation. To this end, this study introduced a novel method for quantitative evaluation of rock mass integrity during drilling, integrating numerical statistics with machine learning.A substantial dataset of digital drilling data was collected, covering three common types of rock mass integrity:relatively intact, relatively fractured, and fractured.Subsequently,a high-performance random forest model for the classification of rock mass integrity was developed through data preprocessing and hyperparameter optimization. The interpretability of the model ’s predictive results was enhanced using Shapley additive explanations (SHAP …

Object Detection And Tracking Based On Fusion Of Radar And Camera On Highway Side, Zeng Yongqiang, Zhang Yonghua, Zhao Hui, Liu Xin, Xu Mingsheng, Shen Jianwei, Hu Zhiwei, Chen Zhenquan
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Camera is the most widely used sensor in intelligent transportation systems (ITS),but the decline of detection and positioning accuracy caused by target occlusion and external environment interference has always been an important factor restricting the development of ITS.In order to solve this problem,a multi-mode fusion target detection and tracking method based on millimeter-wave radar (MWR ) and camera on highway side was designed.Compared with cameras,high-resolution MWR had better measurement accuracy and weather robustness, serving as a better complement to camera perception. The proposed method used the center point-based radar and camera fusion algorithm for target detection and adopted the greedy algorithm for …

Testing For Dice Control At Craps, Stewart N. Ethier
Testing For Dice Control At Craps, Stewart N. Ethier
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Dice control involves “setting” the dice and then throwing them carefully, in the hope of influencing the outcomes and gaining an advantage at craps. How does one test for this ability? To specify the alternative hypothesis, we need a statistical model of dice control. Two have been suggested in the gambling literature, namely the Smith–Scott model and the Wong–Shackleford model. Both models are parameterized by θ ∈ [0, 1], which measures the shooter’s level of control. We propose and compare four test statistics: (a) the sample proportion of 7s; (b) the sample proportion of pass-line wins; (c) the sample mean …
A Bump Hunting Approach To Finding Interpretable Data Pockets, Tushar Ojha
A Bump Hunting Approach To Finding Interpretable Data Pockets, Tushar Ojha
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This dissertation approaches the problem of extracting simple interpretations from local regions of data. This is sometimes called bump hunting because the local regions of interest have a high concentration of a particular output value. This work develops a bump hunting method for discrete-valued tabular data where each bump is modeled by a rectangular region of the input data space so its rule-based description admits a simple logical interpretation that can inform decisions. This method is designed for labeled data where each input feature has a distinct meaning that may or may not be related to the output, and the …
On Sharpest Tail Bounds For Functions Of Tail Bounded Random Variables, Stephen Harrison
On Sharpest Tail Bounds For Functions Of Tail Bounded Random Variables, Stephen Harrison
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Consider n real/complex, independent/dependent random variables with respective tail bounds and g a measurable function of the r.v.’s. Consider f the “sharpest” tail bound of g (sharpest in the sense, if f were any less, then for some X1, ..., Xn satisfying the conditions, g(X1, ..., Xn) would not satisfy the tail f). Significant research has been done to approximate f often with high accuracy. These results are often of the form, for g in this family, and tail bounds of Xk in this family, f is bounded by some f′ with high accuracy. However, the question “what would it …
Modeling Private Debt Using U.S. Consumer Expenditure Data, Stsiapan Dziamentsyeu
Modeling Private Debt Using U.S. Consumer Expenditure Data, Stsiapan Dziamentsyeu
Honors Capstones
This project models private household debt among U.S. consumers using data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) between 2013 and 2023. The analysis focuses on identifying how demographic and economic characteristics, such as income, housing expenditures, education, and occupation, relate to non-mortgage “other” loan balances. After initial model development produced poor residual behavior due to zero-inflation from imputed debt values, the analysis was refined to include only households reporting verifiable debt. Multiple modeling techniques, including AIC-based variable selection and Lasso regularization, were compared under a five-fold cross-validation framework. The Lasso model achieved superior predictive accuracy (RMSE = 1.55, MAE = …
Is Hockey Still Canada’S Game? How Usa Teams Have Won Every Stanley Cup Since 1994, Aaron Montgomery, Long Doan, Joe Demaio, Michael Frankel
Is Hockey Still Canada’S Game? How Usa Teams Have Won Every Stanley Cup Since 1994, Aaron Montgomery, Long Doan, Joe Demaio, Michael Frankel
Symposium of Student Scholars
The last Canadian team to win Lord Stanley’s cup in the National Hockey League was the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Since then, each championship has been claimed by a team geographically located in the United States. Is this streak unusual? Perhaps it is particularly unusual in light of the fact that Hockey is known as Canada’s game. Is Hockey in its modern incarnation still Canada’s game? Given the long history of the NHL should we expect such a streak to occur at some point in time? Are we too fixated on the geographic location of the teams in question? Perhaps …

An Assessment And Comparison Of Expert System Performance And Large Language Model Performance, Carter A. Lange
ATU Honors Projects
This study compares the performance of knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) and large language models (LLMs) in narrow-domain tasks. Using Akinator as the representative KBES and ChatGPT as the representative LLM, fifty character-identification trials were conducted. Results show that both systems ultimately succeeded in identifying all characters, but their efficiency and accuracy differ. Akinator required fewer incorrect guesses and produced no identifiable total failures, or “errors,” while ChatGPT occasionally erred beyond possible continuation despite similar average guess counts. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in the number of questions required before success, but McNemar’s test indicated that ChatGPT made significantly more …

Examining The Intersectional And Structural Issues Of Routine Healthcare Utilization And Access Inequities For Lgb People With Chronic Diseases, Shiya Cao, Mehreen Mirza, Sophia Silovsky, Nicole Tresvalles, Lucia Qin, Sarah Susnea
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
In the United States, although the gaps in health insurance coverage by sexual orientation have been closing since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and legalization of same-sex marriage, the LGB group (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual) continues to report healthcare utilization and access inequities such as more delayed or unmet care. The extant research has often examined healthcare utilization and access inequities due to affordability (e.g., out-of-pocket costs). However, healthcare utilization and access inequities are only partially explained by cost reasons; there are non-cost reasons that have not been adequately empirically examined. The present study innovatively includes discrimination structural …

Model For Calculating Impact Force For Individualized Hip Fracture Prediction During A Fall, Alisha Agarwal, Daniel Kargilis, Nishtha Gupta, Michael Chang, Rui Feng, Gregory Chang, Chamith S. Rajapakse
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Osteoporotic-related weakening of bone is a common cause of hip fractures. The standard of care for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis is the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry bone mineral density T-scores. Many individuals considered nonosteoporotic, however, still sustain fractures since these tools do not incorporate vital bone parameters and subject-specific characteristics. The purpose of this work was to (1) develop a simple analytical model for estimating the force exerted on the femur during a fall (i.e., impact force) based on measurable patient metrics and (2) define a quantifiable fracture risk index by comparing finite-element-derived bone strength and impact force, which …
The Heterogeneity Of Healthcare And Insurance In The Midwest, William Robb
The Heterogeneity Of Healthcare And Insurance In The Midwest, William Robb
Honors Theses
Background
Healthcare varies in each state from labor and capital to the laws governing the state and the finances they run under. United States citizens have criticized healthcare and call for change as the United States lacks a universal healthcare system. Even with a universal healthcare system, there are systematic issues and a financial downturn that need to be addressed even if it were to be adopted. Half of the counties in the U.S. see a shortage in labor and hospitals leading to a desert for both cases. Funding through the government is unstable and lacks clear and meaningful payments …
Identifying Draft-Worthy Pitchers: A Statistical Analysis Of Northwoods League Performance Metrics, Stephen Tyrpak
Identifying Draft-Worthy Pitchers: A Statistical Analysis Of Northwoods League Performance Metrics, Stephen Tyrpak
Honors Theses
The Northwoods League (NWL) is a collegiate summer wooden-bat baseball league that provides college athletes with an opportunity to maintain and enhance their skills during the offseason while competing in game-like conditions. Although prior research has explored player performance in other summer leagues, such as the Cape Cod Baseball League, academic investigation into predictors of draft outcomes in the NWL remains limited. This study addresses this gap by evaluating whether pitch-tracking metrics collected via Trackman systems can predict a pitcher’s likelihood of selection in the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft and by identifying which performance characteristics are most strongly associated …

Bridging Machine Learning And Islamic Scholarship: A Study In Hadith Translation And Similarity Analysis, Asiyah R. Speight
Bridging Machine Learning And Islamic Scholarship: A Study In Hadith Translation And Similarity Analysis, Asiyah R. Speight
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Translation of Islamic religious texts poses unique challenges requiring both linguistic and theological expertise. This study explores the application of neural machine translation (NMT) models to Arabic-English hadith translation while analyzing semantic similarity patterns across different human translations. Using the complete Sahih Bukhari corpus (7,550 hadiths) as the primary dataset, we adopt a dual approach combining transfer learning and comprehensive neural network analysis to demonstrate the critical impact of corpus size on model performance.
First, we fine-tune a pre-trained MarianMT Arabic-English translation model on the full Sahih Bukhari corpus, comparing models trained on 40 hadiths versus 7,550 hadiths. Performance is …
Explainable Ai For Liver Transplant Survival Prediction: Integrating Immunological Mismatch Features, Sourab Shaik
Explainable Ai For Liver Transplant Survival Prediction: Integrating Immunological Mismatch Features, Sourab Shaik
Honors Projects
Liver Transplantations are crucial treatment for end-stage liver disease. However, a persistent deficit of donor organs necessitates maximizing the utility of each available graft to minimize failure rates. We evaluated whether donor–recipient molecular immunogenicity metrics - Electrostatic and Hydrophobic Mismatch Scores (HMS/EMS) and eplet-based counts - improve post–liver-transplant survival prediction. The analytic cohort comprised adult, first time, single-organ deceased-donor transplants drawn from Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients; follow-up was truncated at five years, and the endpoint was all-cause graft failure (earliest of graft failure or death; otherwise, censored). HLA variables were derived via high- resolution conversion and molecular mismatch computations …

Iso-Detr: A Novel Detection Transformer For Industrial Small Object Detection, Faisal Saeed, Anand Paul
School of Public Health Faculty Publications
Effectively detecting and assessing real-time structural and ecological parameters in contemporary manufacturing environments poses significant challenges, particularly in identifying minute objects within product images. The swift evolution of the industrial sector underscores the necessity for intelligent manufacturing environments to uphold stringent product quality standards. However, accelerating production processes at high speeds heightens the risk of defective product outcomes. This research addresses the challenges inherent in small object detection within industrial contexts, proposing an innovative detection transformer model tailored to modern manufacturing environments. The proposed model integrates a feature-enhanced multi-head self-attention block (FEMSA), merging cross-channel communication network and multiple multi-head self-attention …
Generating Predictive Gene Expression Signatures For Alzheimer's Disease Using Postmortem Brain Tissue, Ashley Duche
Generating Predictive Gene Expression Signatures For Alzheimer's Disease Using Postmortem Brain Tissue, Ashley Duche
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein aggregates. These pathological features develop in specific brain regions, but why some areas are more vulnerable to early AD-related changes remains unclear. To address this, predictive gene expression signatures were developed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying regional susceptibility to AD pathology.
Methods: This was performed using postmortem brain (PMB) tissue from participants in the Religious Orders Study and Memory and Aging Project (ROSMAP), Mayo Clinic, and Mount Sinai Brain Bank (MSBB) to generate gene expression signatures from six brain …

(R2131) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Retrial Inventory Queueing System With Constant Retrial Rate, Bernoulli Vacation, Breakdown, Delayed Repair, Balking, (S, S) Policy And Emergency Replenishment, G. Ayyappan, M. Thilakavathy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A single server retrial queueing-inventory model is investigated in this study. In Bernoulli vacation, after providing service to the customer, the server may opt to avail vacation or start the service to subsequent customer. During the busy period, breakdown and balking may occur. The inventory is replenished to an (s, S) policy and the replenishing time is assumed to adopt an exponential distribution. Furthermore, assume that an emergency replenishment of one item with zero lead time takes place when the on-hand inventory level decreases to zero. We integrate the emergency replenishment into the system to ensure customer satisfaction. For our …

(R2120) Flexible Group Service Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Working Vacation And Optional Service, G. Ayyappan, S. Kalaiarasi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
There are many uses of queues, where services are provided in groups; these types of queues are widely studied in the literature. In this paper we examine a particular queueing model wherein the services are provided in groups and the group size may be less than or equal to the size initially fixed. The arrival follows a Markovian arrival process. The service time of each individual customer follows phase type distribution. The maximum of each customer’s individual service time within a group is defined as the group’s service time. At the service completion moment if there are fewer customers than …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Wearable actimeters can improve our understanding of sleep in the natural environments. Current algorithms may produce inaccuracies in specific individuals and circumstances, such as quiet wakefulness. New hardware allows data collection at higher frequencies enabling sophisticated analytical methods. We have developed a novel statistical algorithm, the Wasserstein Algorithm for Classifying Sleep and Wakefulness (WACSAW), to identify behavioral states from recordings of everyday movement. WACSAW employs optimal transport techniques to identify segments with differing activity variability. Functions characterizing the segments' movement distributions were clustered into two groups using a k-nearest neighbors and labeled as sleep or wake based on their proximity …
Impacts Of Nutrient Addition And Disturbance On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities And Trophic Interactions, Kayla Beitzel
Impacts Of Nutrient Addition And Disturbance On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities And Trophic Interactions, Kayla Beitzel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Coastal dune ecosystems face ongoing threats from human-mediated disturbance and altered resource availability. Because these dunes provide critical habitat for many organisms, including shorebirds, beach mice, and arthropods, changes in disturbance regimes or resource availability can impact plant communities and higher trophic levels by altering plant richness and productivity, which in turn influence arthropod abundance and diversity. To examine how disturbance and nutrient addition affect arthropod communities, we established twenty 5×5 m plots on Dauphin Island, crossing mechanical disturbance with a 10 g m⁻² addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, replicated across five experimental blocks. Arthropods were sampled using three …
The Food Truck: A Multi-Product Newsvendor With Expectile Risk, Sekyiwaah Nuamah
The Food Truck: A Multi-Product Newsvendor With Expectile Risk, Sekyiwaah Nuamah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Newsvendor Problem is a fundamental model in Operation Research and Supply Chain Management used to determine the optimal order quantity under uncertain demand to minimize expected costs.
This research extends the classical Newsvendor problem to a multi--product setting, addressing the risk of asymmetric cost structures faced by a food truck. This thesis introduces expectile risk measures to quantify and manage uncertainty in demand, moving beyond traditional risk metrics. To evaluate the impact of expectile-based decision-making, we analyze three types of demand distributions--simple, symmetric, and skewed. For skewed distributions, we apply linear spline inverse interpolation to derive expectile values from …
Deep Learning With Kalman Filter, Rexford Julius Quaye
Deep Learning With Kalman Filter, Rexford Julius Quaye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an extension of the Kalman filter to handle nonlinear and non-Gaussian systems. The standard Kalman filter is optimal under Gaussian assumptions but struggles with more complex noise models. This work introduces a novel loss function based on the Mahalanobis distance, which incorporates the covariance structure of measurement errors, enabling the filter to adapt to non-Gaussian scenarios. The neural network framework is applied to predict the system’s process model, while retaining the classical Kalman measurement update. The proposed methodology is demonstrated through examples of car position and rocket altitude tracking. The results show that the new approach performs …
Advancing Effective Connectivity Analysis: Robust And Sparse Group Dynamic Causal Modeling Via Extended Parametric Empirical Bayes, Godfred Arhin
Advancing Effective Connectivity Analysis: Robust And Sparse Group Dynamic Causal Modeling Via Extended Parametric Empirical Bayes, Godfred Arhin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) provides a principled framework for estimating effective connectivity in neuroimaging data, with Parametric Empirical Bayes (PEB) enabling hierarchical inference across sessions and subjects. However, standard PEB assumes Gaussian distributions at all hierarchical levels and employs conventional shrinkage priors that do not enforce true sparsity, limiting robustness to outlying subjects and reducing sensitivity to parsimonious connectivity structures. This thesis introduces a robust, sparsity-inducing hierarchical extension to DCM-PEB that addresses these limitations through two key innovations. First, a Student-t group-level likelihood replaces the conventional Gaussian likelihood, automatically downweighting outlying subject-level parameters using adaptive precision weights while retaining computational …

Crime Statistics And Taxi Transportation In New York City: An Exploratory Data Analysis, Adelyn J. Fleming
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
In a heavily populated city as busy and vibrant as New York City, people are constantly on the move. Some of that movement might be connected to the occurrence of certain crimes. This study explores how movement, especially from yellow taxicabs, relates to crime occurrences within different parts of the city. By looking at the 2018 taxi trip and crime data, alongside population data from the 2020 U.S. Census, this project aims to explore how individuals travel within the city and whether there is any relationship with the types of crime that occur within those areas. Visual tools and maps …
