Model-Based Imputation Of Below Detection Limit Missing Data And Group Selection In Bayesian Group Index Regression, Matthew Carli
Model-Based Imputation Of Below Detection Limit Missing Data And Group Selection In Bayesian Group Index Regression, Matthew Carli
Theses and Dissertations
Investigations into the association between chemical exposure and health outcomes are increasingly focused on the role of chemical mixtures, as opposed to individual chemicals. The analysis of chemical mixture data required the development of novel statistical methods, one of these being Bayesian group index regression. A statistical challenge common to all chemical mixture analyses is the ubiquitous presence of below detection limit (BDL) data. We propose an extension of Bayesian group index regression that treats both regression effects and missing BDL observations as parameters in a model estimated through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm that we refer to as …
Integrative Post-Gwas Analyses Of Psychiatric Disorders: Identifying Putative Risk Genes And Gene Sets Using Transcriptome, Proteome And Methylome Information, Huseyin Gedik
Theses and Dissertations
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of psychiatric disorders (PD) yield numerous loci with significant signals, but often they do not implicate specific protein coding genes. Because GWAS risk loci are enriched in expression/protein/methylation quantitative loci (e/p/mQTL, hereafter xQTL), transcriptome/proteome/methylome-wide association studies (T/P/MWAS, hereafter XWAS), which integrate information from GWAS and x-level (mRNA, protein or DNA methylation levels) coming from largest xQTL studies, can link GWAS signals to effects on specific genes. For gene level analyses, researchers use mendelian randomization (MR) methods to fine-map the association between x-levels and trait. However, none of the previous studies ever jointly analyzed XWAS of multiple …
Dynamic Overnight Effect On Next Day Stock Market Forecasting, Thomas J. Lee
Dynamic Overnight Effect On Next Day Stock Market Forecasting, Thomas J. Lee
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Using a cross section of stocks that have high frequency trading data from 2007 to 2018, we document whether various intraday momentum patterns found in the financial literature over the years continue to hold over time. The first half hour return on the market is often seen as having predictive power over the last half hour of trading, or overnight returns are thought to reverse in the next day's first half hour of trading. We find that while there is some evidence for these patterns, especially in the earlier years, these patterns tend to weaken over time as investors take …
The Impact Of Faculty Composition On Cost Per Student: A Mixed Model Approach, Arun Sleeba
The Impact Of Faculty Composition On Cost Per Student: A Mixed Model Approach, Arun Sleeba
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis aims to explore whether research universities in the United States, specifically those classified as Carnegie I or II institutions, utilize part time contingent faculty(rPTF) as a cost saving strategy. Additionally, it sought to determine if there was a differential impact on total costs when comparing public and private universities. Employing a linear mixed effects model with random intercept and slopes, this study analyzed the relationship between rPTF (ratio of part-time to total faculty) and total cost. This study did not provide substantial evidence to support the notion despite observing a negative correlation between rPTF and total cost. Regarding …
Enhanced Maximum Likelihood Models For Underreported Variables: Extending To Multiple Claims Dimension, Shalaka Sudhanshu Sarpotdar
Enhanced Maximum Likelihood Models For Underreported Variables: Extending To Multiple Claims Dimension, Shalaka Sudhanshu Sarpotdar
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis builds upon the foundations laid out in Xia et al. [2023], which explored the utilizationof Maximum Likelihood approach to model misrepresentation data in Generalized Linear Models (GLM) ratemaking models. We introduce the concept of “underreported variables”, a form of insurance misrepresentation where insured individuals provide inaccurate information about risk factors that influence insurance eligibility, premiums, and insured amounts. Unlike fraudulent misrepresentation, underreported variables arise from a lack of awareness regarding the insured’s mental and physical health conditions, rather than fraudulent intent. The study rigorously tests the proposed model using health insurance data and extends its applicability to other …
A State Space Modeling Approach To Eeg Artifact Removal, Patrick B. Rafael
A State Space Modeling Approach To Eeg Artifact Removal, Patrick B. Rafael
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this work, a state space modeling approach is applied to an Electroencephalography(EEG) recording for the purpose of artifact removal, and is compared against Independent Components Analysis (ICA), the current gold standard. Issues of model identifiability are touched on, and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) is used to estimate a linear non-Gaussian state space model. Results show that estimating such a model is a nontrivial matter, and the full utility of the state space approach remains to be demonstrated.
A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby
A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Handwriting analysis is a complex field largely living in forensic science and the legal realm. One task of a forensic document examiner (FDE) may be to determine the writer(s) of handwritten documents. Automated identification systems (AIS) were built to aid FDEs in their examinations. Part of the uses of these AIS (such as FISH[5] [7],WANDA [6], CEDAR-FOX [17], and FLASHID®2) are tomeasure features about a handwriting sample and to provide the user with a numeric value of the evidence. These systems use their own algorithms and definitions of features to quantify the writing and can be considered a black-box. The …
The Birds And The Trees: Quantifying The Drivers Of Whitebark Pine Decline And Clark's Nutcracker Habitat Use In Glacier National Park, Vladimir Kovalenko
The Birds And The Trees: Quantifying The Drivers Of Whitebark Pine Decline And Clark's Nutcracker Habitat Use In Glacier National Park, Vladimir Kovalenko
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), recently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, is in steep decline in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA due to the non-native pathogen Cronartium ribicola, causal agent of the fatal disease white pine blister rust. A sample of the park’s population suggests that approximately 70 percent of whitebark pines have died, while 65 percent of the remaining trees are infected. Using landscape and climate variables, we show how geographic location, elevation, aspect, solar radiation, relative humidity, and snowpack interact with tree diameter to affect mortality, disease incidence, cone production, and regeneration. We also examine how …
A Picture Worth A Thousand Words: Factors Influencing Disability Accommodations, Alicia E. Martin
A Picture Worth A Thousand Words: Factors Influencing Disability Accommodations, Alicia E. Martin
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Because not all disabilities look the same it is difficult to label a person with disabilities just by looking at them. Given that our knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions impact how we interpret our world and our willingness to act, people, including professors, may be biased toward providing accommodations for those with easily recognizable disabilities and biased against those with non-recognizable disabilities, and this may impact the disabled person’s ability to learn. This thesis aims to address whether professors’ disability-related attitudes, perceptions of accommodation reasonableness, and willingness to provide accommodations differ when the disability is recognizable (student is pictured in a …
Laboratory Practices And Antimicrobial Resistance In A Florida Hospital, Crispina Marie Sy-Trias
Laboratory Practices And Antimicrobial Resistance In A Florida Hospital, Crispina Marie Sy-Trias
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Antibiotic resistance is a health threat affecting millions of Americans. Microorganisms develop resistance to antibiotics, rendering them useless for treating infections. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the associations between sample processing time and antibiotic resistance and is based on the health belief model. A retrospective specimen tracking activity of data from November 2019 to November 2020 was obtained by random sampling of 246 bacterial cultures. One hundred ninety-six (80%) samples were processed on time, and 50 (20%) were delayed; 167 (68%) samples were determined to have the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and 79 (32%) with …
Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter
Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter
Doctoral Dissertations
"This thesis proposes efficient ensemble-based algorithms for solving the full and reduced Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The proposed ensemble methods require solving only one linear system with multiple right-hand sides for different realizations, reducing computational cost and simulation time. Four algorithms utilize a Generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (GPAV) approach and are demonstrated to be second-order accurate and unconditionally stable with respect to the system energy through comprehensive stability analyses and error tests. Two algorithms make use of Artificial Compressibility (AC) to update pressure and a solenoidal constraint for the magnetic field. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate …
Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan
Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation focuses on two areas of statistics: DNA methylation and survival analysis. The first part of the dissertation pertains to the detection of differentially methylated regions in the human genome. The varying distribution of gaps between succeeding genomic locations, which are represented on the microarray used to quantify methylation, makes it challenging to identify regions that have differential methylation. This emphasizes the need to properly account for the correlation in methylation shared by nearby locations within a specific genomic distance. In this work, a normalized kernel-weighted statistic is proposed to obtain an optimal amount of "information" from neighboring locations …
Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara
Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara
Doctoral Dissertations
"The volatility of asset returns is usually time-varying, necessitating the introduction of models with a conditional heteroskedastic variance structure. In this dissertation, several existing formulations, motivated by the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) type models, are further generalized to accommodate more dynamic features of asset returns such as asymmetry, long memory, and structural breaks. First, we introduce a hybrid structure that combines short-memory asymmetric Glosten, Jagannathan, and Runkle (GJR) formulation and the long-memory fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) process for modeling financial volatility. This formulation not only can model volatility clusters and capture asymmetry but also considers the characteristic of long …
Network Intrusion Detection Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Hamed T. Sanusi
Network Intrusion Detection Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Hamed T. Sanusi
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis delves into cybersecurity by applying Deep Reinforcement(DRL) Learning in network intrusion detection. One advantage of DRL is the ability to adapt to changing network conditions and evolving attack methods, making it a promising solution for addressing the challenges involved in intrusion detection. The thesis will also discuss the obstacles and benefits of using Classification methods for network intrusion detection and the need for high-quality training data. To train and test our proposed method, the NSL-KDD dataset was used and then adjusted by converting it from a multi-classification to a binary classification, achieved by joining all attacks into one. …

Rapid early progression (REP) has been defined as increased nodular enhancement at the border of the resection cavity, the appearance of new lesions outside the resection cavity, or increased enhancement of the residual disease after surgery and before radiation. Patients with REP have worse survival compared to patients without REP (non-REP). Therefore, a reliable method for differentiating REP from non-REP is hypothesized to assist in personlized treatment planning. A potential approach is to use the radiomics and fractal texture features extracted from brain tumors to characterize morphological and physiological properties. We propose a random sampling-based ensemble classification model. The proposed …

A Fairness Parameters Selection Method For Convex Fairness-Aware Classification Models, Puvarith Veerabulyarith
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Fairness-aware classification has emerged as a focal point in a wide range of machine learning applications. To address fairness issues such as demographic parity and disparate mistreatment, researchers have developed fair classifiers. A common approach for creating fairness-aware models involves formulating an optimization problem where fairness constraints are incorporated. However, the determination of optimal fairness constraint limits poses a significant challenge. In the first part of this paper, we explore the behavior of the fairness constraint limits on the model loss and the fairness metric. Next, we introduce a method for selecting suitable limits from a set of efficient limits …

A High-Dimensional Variable Selection Under Multicollinearity Via Whitening Elastic Net, Naphat Kanjanaphan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In high-dimensional data research such as genomics data, identifying predictors in highly correlated data poses significant challenges, especially when employing regularization methods. We found WLasso (Whitening Lasso), which effectively handles highly correlated settings by transforming predictors to mitigate correlation and applying generalized Lasso criteria. To ensure fairness in comparison with other regularization methods, we utilize a simplified version of WLasso, retaining its core concept while eliminating the coefficient ranking process. Our aim is to enhance WLasso performance by adapting it to the Generalized Elastic Net framework, resulting in Whitening Elastic Net. Leveraging the transformation process of WLasso, we integrate it …

Binary And Multi-Label Machine Learning Models For Discrete-Time Survival Analysis: A Case Study To Predict Complications And Mortality In Thai Diabetic Patients, Heng Chheang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this research, we address the issue of predicting complications among Thai diabetic patients, considering the interconnected nature of these complications. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as Type-I and Type-II diabetes impose a significant global health burden, with major complications such as cardiovascular disease being the leading cause. Early detection of complications is crucial, and survival analysis emerges as a key method for this task. While classical approaches focus on continuous-time survival prediction, the advancement of machine learning has enabled the development of discrete-time survival classification. This thesis conducts a comprehensive analysis of survival prediction for Diabetes-related complications, employing six machine …

As soccer is widely regarded as the most popular sport in the world there is high interest in methods of improving team performances. There are many ways teams and individual athletes can influence their own performances during competition. This thesis focuses on developing statistical methodologies for improving competition-based decision-making for soccer so as to allow professional soccer teams to make better informed decisions regarding player selection and in-game decision-making.
To properly capture the dynamic actions of professional soccer, Markov chains with increasing complexity are proposed. These models allow for the inclusion of potential changes in the process caused by goals …
Longitudinal Sport Science Implementation In American Collegiate Men’S Basketball, Jason Stone
Longitudinal Sport Science Implementation In American Collegiate Men’S Basketball, Jason Stone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The expanding opportunities to implement sport science frameworks in elite-level basketball environments coincide with the sport’s increasing global prominence. Concomitant to these opportunities is the continual growth of the sport technology market (e.g., wearables, force plates) and computational power (e.g., data management tools, coding capabilities), which yields solutions and challenges for both athletes and practitioners. Due to the rapid influx of new sport technologies in high performance environments, particularly American Collegiate Men’s Basketball, more formal and ecologically valid research on how to effectively utilize data derived from them, particularly over long periods of time (i.e., multiple seasons) is needed. To …
