C# Traceability System, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Michael Kernahan, Miriam Capretz
C# Traceability System, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Michael Kernahan, Miriam Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Traceability information is a valuable asset that software development teams can leverage to minimise their risk during production and maintenance of software projects. When maintainers are added to a software project post-production, they have to learn the system from scratch and understand its dynamics before they can begin making appropriate modifications to the source code. The system outlined in this paper extracts traceability information directly from the source code of C# projects, and presents it in such a way that it can be easily used to understand the logic and validate changes to the system.
Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao
Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Clustering is well-suited for Web mining by automatically organizing Web pages into categories, each of which contains Web pages having similar contents. However, one problem in clustering is the lack of general methods to automatically determine the number of categories or clusters. For the Web domain in particular, currently there is no such method suitable for Web page clustering. In an attempt to address this problem, we discover a constant factor that characterizes the Web domain, based on which we propose a new method for automatically determining the number of clusters in Web page data sets. We discover that the …
Hide It Or Unbundle It: A Comparison Of The Antitrust Investigations Against Microsoft In The U.S. And The E.U., Sue Ann Mota
Hide It Or Unbundle It: A Comparison Of The Antitrust Investigations Against Microsoft In The U.S. And The E.U., Sue Ann Mota
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software company, has been facing antitrust scrutiny globally. In the U.S., after what’s been called the antitrust trial of the century, a consent decree was reached between Microsoft, the United States government, and several states, that closely resembled the litigated remedy that the remaining states received. Only Massachusetts appealed the litigated remedy, which was approved by the appeals court on June 30, 2004. In the United States, Microsoft was required to hide, but not remove, the Internet Explorer browser on the Windows Operating System. While antitrust litigation was ongoing in the United States against …

Mindshare: A Collaborative Peer-To-Peer System For Small Groups, Gareth Charles Farrington
Theses and Dissertations
We present Mindshare, a system for small group collaboration using Peer to Peer networking technology. This paper details the motivation behind its design, how it benefits users and details of its construction and operation. The solution focuses on the needs of small collaborating groups with limited computing experience and resources. Mindshare allows the group to share an unlimited number of files and visualize them in unified hierarchical file system. Mindshare synchronizes the files between users without user input. Its robust design allows files to be shared even when the owner is offline and allows users to work with files from …
Live Data Views: Programming Pervasive Applications That Use “Timely” And “Dynamic” Data, Jay Black, Paul Castro, Archan Misra, Jerome White
Live Data Views: Programming Pervasive Applications That Use “Timely” And “Dynamic” Data, Jay Black, Paul Castro, Archan Misra, Jerome White
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the absence of generic programming abstractions for dynamic data in most enterprise programming environments, individual applications treat data streams as a special case requiring custom programming. With the growing number of live data sources such as RSS feeds, messaging and presence servers, multimedia streams, and sensor data. a general-purpose client-server programming model is needed to easily incorporate live data into applications. In this paper, we present Live Data Views, a programming abstraction that represents live data as a time-windowed view over a set of data streams. Live Data Views allow applications to create and retrieve stateful abstractions of dynamic …
Minimum Energy Reliable Paths Using Unreliable Wireless Links, Qunfeng Dong, Suman Banerjee, Micah Adler, Archan Misra
Minimum Energy Reliable Paths Using Unreliable Wireless Links, Qunfeng Dong, Suman Banerjee, Micah Adler, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of energy-efficient reliable wireless communication in the presence of unreliable or lossy wireless link layers in multi-hop wireless networks. Prior work [1] has provided an optimal energy efficient solution to this problem for the case where link layers implement perfect reliability. However, a more common scenario --- a link layer that is not perfectly reliable, was left as an open problem. In this paper we first present two centralized algorithms, BAMER and GAMER, that optimally solve the minimum energy reliable communication problem in presence of unreliable links. Subsequently we present a distributed algorithm, DAMER, that approximates …

Personalization By Program Slicing, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan
Personalization By Program Slicing, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Personalization involves customizing information access to the end-user. As any new area of computer science research it lacks formal models to guide the design of systems. In this paper, we present a modeling methodology, based on generative programming, for personalizing interactions with hierarchical websites. The methodology entails modeling a user’s interaction with a site in a program and applying program slicing to personalize the interaction. While preserving interactivity, this approach does not require the designer to anticipate all possible user interactions a priori and provide interfaces for each. Moreover, it provides a theoretical, systematic, and implementation-neutral way to design systems …
Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley
Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis describes the development of a software tool that facilitates the creation of software environments that make a simulation tool execute k replications of an application program on several nodes of an M-node Beowulf cluster. It is assumed that each cluster-node consists of p processors. The p processors that are contained in the master cluster-node are termed master processors, and the p processors that are contained in a slave cluster-node are termed slave processors. The slave processors are used to execute the replications, while the master processors are dedicated to schedule the replications and process other housekeeping chores. For …
Applying A Simulation-Based Real-Time Decision Making Method To Mass Casualty Scenarios In Hospital Emergency Departments, Fatemah Al-Douli
Applying A Simulation-Based Real-Time Decision Making Method To Mass Casualty Scenarios In Hospital Emergency Departments, Fatemah Al-Douli
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The high possibility of having a mass casualty incident compels hospitals to plan ahead in order to sufficiently provide the healthcare needed to as many casualty victims as possible. The Emergency Rooms (ER) are usually hospitals' main entrance for many casualties. Therefore, the ER in the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) was selected as the system to be examined. The ER in CHKD, the only specialized pediatric ER in the region, already struggles to handle very high patient arrival rates. Consequently, it is expected that treating a large number of patients surviving within a very short period of …

A Translational Web Services Bridge Solution For Meaningful Interoperability Between Potentially Disparate Systems, Kym J. Pohl, Lakshmi Vempati, Jens G. Pohl
A Translational Web Services Bridge Solution For Meaningful Interoperability Between Potentially Disparate Systems, Kym J. Pohl, Lakshmi Vempati, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
An emerging issue in the world of context-centric software-based decision-support is the need for potentially disparate systems to interoperate in meaningful and useful ways. Such interoperability must go beyond the elementary communication of data and endeavor to support a more powerful context-oriented inter-system relationship. A key issue in such functionality is the support, moreover the promotion, of meaningful interoperability while still retaining individual system representations, or perspectives. In other words, the meaningful integration of potentially disparate systems in a manner that allows each collaborating system to retain its potentially unique means of representing, or perceiving, the domain over which it …
Mastaq: A Middleware Architecture For Sensor Applications With Statistical Quality Constraints, Inseok Hwang, Qi Han, Archan Misra
Mastaq: A Middleware Architecture For Sensor Applications With Statistical Quality Constraints, Inseok Hwang, Qi Han, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present the design goals and functional components of MASTAQ, a data management middleware for pervasive applications that utilize sensor data. MASTAQ allows applications to specify their quality-of information (QoI) preferences (in terms of statistical metrics over the data) independent of the underlying network topology. It then achieves energy efficiency by adaptively activating and querying only the subset of sensor nodes needed to meet the target QoI bounds. We also present a closed-loop feedback mechanism based on broadcasting of activation probabilities, which allows MASTAQ to activate the appropriate number of sensors without requiring any inter-sensor coordination or knowledge of the …

Intelligent Software Systems In Historical Context, Jens G. Pohl
Intelligent Software Systems In Historical Context, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
The purpose of this chapter is to trace the evolution of intelligent software from data-centric applications that essentially encapsulate their data environment to ontology-based applications with automated reasoning capabilities. It is argued that a distinction may be drawn between human intelligence and component capabilities within a more general definition of intelligence, and that such component capabilities can be embedded in computer software. The primary vehicle in the quest for intelligent software has been the gradual recognition of the central role played by data and information, rather than the logic and functionality of the application. The three milestones in this evolution …

Y: New Component-Based Software Life Cycle Model, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
With the need to produce ever larger and more complex software systems, the use of reusable components has become increasingly imperative. Of the many existing and proposed techniques for software development, it seems clear that component-based software development will be at the forefront of new approaches to the production of software systems and holds the promise of substantially enhancing the software production and maintenance process. Attempts to rationalize component-based development have to recognize that the construction of a software system is a complex multifaceted activity that involves domain engineering, frame working, assembling, archiving and design of software components. These activities, …

Our work is based on the premise that analysis of the connections exploited by a recommender algorithm can provide insight into the algorithm that could be useful to predict its performance in a fielded system. We use the jumping connections model defined by Mirza et al. [6], which describes the recommendation process in terms of graphs. Here we discuss our work that has come out of trying to understand algorithm behavior in terms of these graphs. We start by describing a natural extension of the jumping connections model of Mirza et al., and then discuss observations that have come from …
