Pyspqr: A Python Package For Density Estimation Using Deep Learning, Cameron Eddy, Reetam Majumder
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Splines are used for representing complex functions. In statistics, splines can be used for distributional shapes that are difficult to model by traditional parametric approaches. Ramsay (1) uses M-Spline bases to estimate continuous distributions. Semi-Parametric Quantile Regression (SPQR), developed by Xu and Reich (2), models conditional distributions where a neural network is used to estimate the basis function weights that depend on covariates. (3) implements a package for SPQR in R. We build on this by implementing a version of SPQR in Python with PyTorch. By using PyTorch, we can use more sophisticated deep learning architectures than those available in …

Computer Vision In Soccer: Yolov11 Analytics Engine For Quantifying Game Strategy, Connor S. Maurer
Data Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Single-shot object detection capabilities significantly reduce computational overhead for real-time computer vision in sports analytics at 60 FPS. YOLO11’s lightweight CNN gives promising accuracy while meeting the low-latency demand of dynamic soccer matches. As data-driven approaches take over the sport of soccer, efficient player tracking systems become critical for informing coach’s strategies. I prototype the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process of data collected from a single- shot detection program and evaluate its viability for estimating player fatigue. YOLO11 detects players, the ball, and other characteristics, with the output transformed by homography to estimate the positions in the real world. These …

The Impacts Of Dimensionality, Diffusion, And Directedness On Intrinsic Cross-Model Simulation In Tile-Based Self-Assembly, Daniel Hader, Matthew J. Patitz
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Motivated by applications in DNA-nanotechnology, theoretical investigations in algorithmic tile-assembly have blossomed into a mature theory. In addition to computational universality, the abstract Tile Assembly Model (aTAM) was shown to be intrinsically universal (FOCS 2012), a strong notion of completeness where a single tile set is capable of simulating the full dynamics of all systems within the model; however, this construction fundamentally required non-deterministic tile attachments. This was confirmed necessary when it was shown that the class of directed aTAM systems, those where all possible sequences of tile attachments result in the same terminal assembly, is not intrinsically universal (FOCS …

Exploring Decentralized Computing Using Solid And Ipfs For Social Media Applications, Pranav Balasubramanian Natarajan
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
As traditional centralized social media platforms face growing concerns over data privacy, censorship, and lack of user control, there has been an increasing interest in decentralized alternatives. This thesis explores the design and implementation of a decentralized social media application by integrating two key technologies: Solid and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). Solid, led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, enables users to store and manage their personal data in decentralized "Pods," giving them ownership over their digital identities. IPFS, a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol, facilitates decentralized file storage and sharing, ensuring content availability and resilience against censorship. By leveraging these technologies, the …

Automatic Extraction Of Vulnerability Information For Security Operators Using Gpt Models, Waeland Elder
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Artificial intelligence has progressed rapidly in recent years, greatly revolutionizing the world and helping to automate increasingly complex tasks. However, there are still some disciplines where the problem of automation has not yet been thoroughly tackled, such as in software vulnerability management. Vulnerability management is a critical component of cybersecurity for an organization. Until recently, learning about a vulnerability required a security operator to manually search and read through online information and security advisories to find needed information. Doing so is a significantly time-consuming task, as these advisories tend to be quite lengthy and packed with information about various technologies. …

Technology Agency On Usage: Grounded Theory And Measurement Of Technology Induced Usage Behavior, Sandip Kumar Sarkar
Technology Agency On Usage: Grounded Theory And Measurement Of Technology Induced Usage Behavior, Sandip Kumar Sarkar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most of today’s software applications involve a dyadic interplay between human and technology agency. The use of algorithms driven by user can alter users' interaction patterns by affording them novel and relevant technology action possibilities. I argue that algorithmic activities and features embedded in apps can keep users on IT applications (apps) for longer periods of time. I refer to the behavior of interacting with the apps for longer time than planned as technology-induced excessive use. While practitioners are beginning to recognize characteristics of technology-induced excessive use, research on this topic is very limited. I used a multimethod approach to …

A Study Of Software Development Methodologies, Kendra Risener
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Software development methodologies are often overlooked by software engineers as aspects of development that are handled by project managers alone. However, if every member of the team better understood the development methodology being used, it increases the likelihood that the method is properly implemented and ultimately used to complete the project more efficiently. Thus, this paper seeks to explore six common methodologies: the Waterfall Model, the Spiral Model, Agile, Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming. These are discussed in two main sections in the paper. In the first section, the frameworks are isolated and viewed by themselves. The histories, unique features, …

Comparative Study Of Snort 3 And Suricata Intrusion Detection Systems, Cole Hoover
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) are one layer of defense that can be used to protect a network from cyber-attacks. They monitor a network for any malicious activity and send alerts if suspicious traffic is detected. Two of the most common open-source NIDS are Snort and Suricata. Snort was first released in 1999 and became the industry standard. The one major drawback of Snort has been its single-threaded architecture. Because of this, Suricata was released in 2009 and uses a multithreaded architecture. Snort released Snort 3 last year with major improvements from earlier versions, including implementing a new multithreaded architecture …

Using Bluetooth Low Energy And E-Ink Displays For Inventory Tracking, David Whelan
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The combination of Bluetooth Low energy and E-Ink displays allow for a low energy wire-less display. The application of this technology is far reaching especially given how the Bluetooth Low Energy specification can be extended. This paper proposes an extension to this specification specifically for inventory tracking. This extension combined with the low energy E-Ink display results in a smart label that can keep track of additional meta data and inventory counts for physical inventory. This label helps track the physical inventory and can help mitigate any errors in the logical organization of inventory.
Implementing The Cms+ Sports Rankings Algorithm In A Javafx Environment, Luke Welch
Implementing The Cms+ Sports Rankings Algorithm In A Javafx Environment, Luke Welch
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Every year, sports teams and athletes get cut from championship opportunities because of their rank. While this reality is easier to swallow if a team or athlete is distant from the cut, it is much harder when they are right on the edge. Many times, it leaves fans and athletes wondering, “Why wasn’t I ranked higher? What factors when into the ranking? Are the rankings based on opinion alone?” These are fair questions that deserve an answer. Many times, sports rankings are derived from opinion polls. Other times, they are derived from a combination of opinion polls and measured performance. …
Contrastive Learning For Unsupervised Auditory Texture Models, Christina Trexler
Contrastive Learning For Unsupervised Auditory Texture Models, Christina Trexler
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sounds with a high level of stationarity, also known as sound textures, have perceptually relevant features which can be captured by stimulus-computable models. This makes texture-like sounds, such as those made by rain, wind, and fire, an appealing test case for understanding the underlying mechanisms of auditory recognition. Previous auditory texture models typically measured statistics from auditory filter bank representations, and the statistics they used were somewhat ad-hoc, hand-engineered through a process of trial and error. Here, we investigate whether a better auditory texture representation can be obtained via contrastive learning, taking advantage of the stationarity of auditory textures to …

City Goers: An Exploration Into Creating Seemingly Intelligent A.I. Systems, Matthew Brooke
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Artificial Intelligence systems have come a long way over the years. One particular application of A.I. is its incorporation in video games. A key goal of creating an A.I. system in a video game is to convey a level of intellect to the player. During playtests for Halo: Combat Evolved, the developers at Bungie noticed that players deemed tougher enemies as more intelligent than weaker ones, despite the fact that there were no differences in behavior in the enemies. The tougher enemies provided a greater illusion of intelligence to the players. Inspired by this, I set out to create a …

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Efficiently managing a software development project is extremely important in industry and is often overlooked by the software developers on a project. Pieces of development work are identified by developers and are then handed off to project managers, who are left to organize this information. Project managers must organize this to set expectations for the client, and ensure the project stays on track and on budget. The main block in this process are dependency chains between tasks. Dependency chains can cause a project to take much longer than anticipated or result in the under utilization of developers on a project. …
