Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Splines are used for representing complex functions. In statistics, splines can be used for distributional shapes that are difficult to model by traditional parametric approaches. Ramsay (1) uses M-Spline bases to estimate continuous distributions. Semi-Parametric Quantile Regression (SPQR), developed by Xu and Reich (2), models conditional distributions where a neural network is used to estimate the basis function weights that depend on covariates. (3) implements a package for SPQR in R. We build on this by implementing a version of SPQR in Python with PyTorch. By using PyTorch, we can use more sophisticated deep learning architectures than those available in …
Face Value: A Computational Approach To Subjective Impressions Of Faces, Kevin Kpankou
Face Value: A Computational Approach To Subjective Impressions Of Faces, Kevin Kpankou
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Various computational models of first impressions have been developed to uncover the mechanisms driving these judgments. However, the implicit notion of a singular ``human'' often overlooks meaningful individual differences in beliefs, attitudes, and associations, as well as culturally grounded group-level constructs. In this paper, we extend Cultural Consensus Theory (CCT) to estimate culturally shared beliefs about faces by incorporating latent constructs structured around interpretable facial features extracted via computer vision algorithms. We apply our model to a large-scale dataset of people’s first impressions of faces. Our approach reveals a robust mapping between facial features and culturally constructed impressions, allowing us …

A Predictive Model For Multi- Week Respiratory Risk From Red Tide On Florida’S Gulf Coast., Elmer S. Ochaeta
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Florida’s Gulf Coast red tide (Karenia brevis) can put toxins into the air, making people cough, irritating the throat, and worsening asthma or other breathing problems especially when winds blow from the ocean toward the beach. Right now, most public updates don’t really help with the question people actually ask when planning a weekend or vacation: “Will going to or close to the beach be risky in the next few weeks?”.
In this project, I build a weekly early warning system that estimates respiratory risk for specific beaches and predicts that risk 2 to 4 weeks ahead. The study covers …
Enhancing Llm Code Generation: A Systematic Evaluation Of Multi-Agent Collaboration And Runtime Debugging For Improving Accuracy, Reliability, And Latency, Nazmus Ashrafi
Theses
The use of large language models (LLMs) for automated code generation has emerged as a significant focus within AI research. As these pretrained models continue to evolve, their ability to understand and generate complex code structures has opened up new possibilities for automating intricate programming tasks with greater accuracy. Although contemporary foundational models demonstrate promising results, researchers continue to explore optimal post-training strategies to enhance code quality. These include supervised fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), debugging, and many others. In this thesis, I combine two such widely used post training approaches—namely (1) multi agent collaboration and (2) runtime execution of information-based …

Data Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Single-shot object detection capabilities significantly reduce computational overhead for real-time computer vision in sports analytics at 60 FPS. YOLO11’s lightweight CNN gives promising accuracy while meeting the low-latency demand of dynamic soccer matches. As data-driven approaches take over the sport of soccer, efficient player tracking systems become critical for informing coach’s strategies. I prototype the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process of data collected from a single- shot detection program and evaluate its viability for estimating player fatigue. YOLO11 detects players, the ball, and other characteristics, with the output transformed by homography to estimate the positions in the real world. These …

Background: Collaborative Software Package Registries (SPRs) are an integral part of the software supply chain. Much engineering work synthesizes SPR package into applications. Prior research has examined SPRs for traditional software, such as NPM (JavaScript) and PyPI (Python). Pre-Trained Model (PTM) Registries are an emerging class of SPR of increasing importance, because they support the deep learning supply chain.
Aims: Recent empirical research has examined PTM registries in ways such as vulnerabilities, reuse processes, and evolution. However, no existing research synthesizes them to provide a systematic understanding of the current knowledge. Some of the existing research includes qualitative …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hasbro’s RISK, first published in 1959, is a complex multiplayer strategy game that has received little attention from the scientific community. Training artificial intelligence (AI) agents using stochastic beam search gives insight into effective strategy when playing RISK. A comprehensive analysis of the systems of play challenges preconceptions about good strategy in some areas of the game while reinforcing those preconceptions in others. This study applies stochastic beam search to discover optimal strategies in RISK. Results of the search show both support for and challenges to traditionally held positions about RISK gameplay. While stochastic beam search competently investigates gameplay on …

Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Source code comment classification is an important problem for future machine learning solutions. In particular, supervised machine learning solutions that have largely subjective data labels but are difficult to obtain the labels for. Machine learning problems are problems largely because of a lack of data. In machine learning solutions, it is better to have a large amount of mediocre data than it is to have a small amount of good data. While the mediocre data might not produce the best accuracy, it produces the best results because there is much more to learn from the problem.
In this project, data …

—Game testing has been long recognized as a notoriously challenging task, which mainly relies on manual playing and scripting based testing in game industry. Even until recently, automated game testing still remains to be largely untouched niche. A key challenge is that game testing often requires to play the game as a sequential decision process. A bug may only be triggered until completing certain difficult intermediate tasks, which requires a certain level of intelligence. The recent success of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) sheds light on advancing automated game testing, without human competitive intelligent support. However, the existing DRLs mostly focus …

Automatically Defined Templates For Improved Prediction Of Non-Stationary, Nonlinear Time Series In Genetic Programming, David Moskowitz
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Soft methods of artificial intelligence are often used in the prediction of non-deterministic time series that cannot be modeled using standard econometric methods. These series, such as occur in finance, often undergo changes to their underlying data generation process resulting in inaccurate approximations or requiring additional human judgment and input in the process, hindering the potential for automated solutions.
Genetic programming (GP) is a class of nature-inspired algorithms that aims to evolve a population of computer programs to solve a target problem. GP has been applied to time series prediction in finance and other domains. However, most GP-based approaches to …

Using Ant Colonization Optimization To Control Difficulty In Video Game Ai., Joshua Courtney
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Ant colony optimization (ACO) is an algorithm which simulates ant foraging behavior. When ants search for food they leave pheromone trails to tell other ants which paths to take to find food. ACO has been adapted to many different problems in computer science: mainly variations on shortest path algorithms for graphs and networks.
ACO can be adapted to work as a form of communication between separate agents in a video game AI. By controlling the effectiveness of this communication, the difficulty of the game should be able to be controlled. Experimentation has shown that ACO works effectively as a form …
