According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 932,000 people in the US have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Just about 75% of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involved Opioid, which suggests that the US is in an Opioid overdose epidemic. Identifying individuals likely to develop Opioid use disorder (OUD) can help public health in planning effective prevention, intervention, drug overdose and recovery policies. Further, a better understanding of prediction of overdose leading to the neurobiology of OUD may lead to new therapeutics. In recent years, very limited work has been done using statistical …

Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer
Theses and Dissertations
Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) is a technique commonly used to determine surface or interfacial tension. Applications of traditional ASDA methods to process analytical technologies are limited by computational speed and image quality. Here, we address these limitations using a novel machine learning approach to analysis. With a convolutional neural network (CNN), we were able to achieve an experimental fit precision of (+/-) 0.122 mN/m in predicting the surface tension of drop images at a rate of 1.5 ms^-1 versus 7.7 s^-1, which is more than 5,000 times faster than the traditional method. The results are validated on real images …
Face Anti-Spoofing And Deep Learning Based Unsupervised Image Recognition Systems, Enoch Solomon
Face Anti-Spoofing And Deep Learning Based Unsupervised Image Recognition Systems, Enoch Solomon
Theses and Dissertations
One of the main problems of a supervised deep learning approach is that it requires large amounts of labeled training data, which are not always easily available. This PhD dissertation addresses the above-mentioned problem by using a novel unsupervised deep learning face verification system called UFace, that does not require labeled training data as it automatically, in an unsupervised way, generates training data from even a relatively small size of data. The method starts by selecting, in unsupervised way, k-most similar and k-most dissimilar images for a given face image. Moreover, this PhD dissertation proposes a new loss function to …
Machine Learning Techniques For Credit Card Fraud Detection, Amal Alamri
Machine Learning Techniques For Credit Card Fraud Detection, Amal Alamri
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Credit card fraudulent transactions are becoming an ever-growing problem in the financial market. There has been a rapid increase in the rate of fraudulent transactional activities in recent years producing considerable financial loss to many companies, organizations, and government agencies. These numbers are anticipated to increase in the near future and many scholars in this field are focused on detecting fraudulent transactions early on, using advanced Machine Learning techniques. However, credit card fraud transaction detection is not easy for two reasons: (I) fraudulent methods usually vary for each attempt, and (II) the dataset is extremely imbalanced with many more normal …

Motivation: Cancer heterogeneity drastically affects cancer therapeutic outcomes. Predicting drug response in vitro is expected to help formulate personalized therapy regimens. In recent years, several computational models based on machine learning and deep learning have been proposed to predict drug response in vitro. However, most of these methods capture drug features based on a single drug description (e.g. drug structure), without considering the relationships between drugs and biological entities (e.g. target, diseases, and side effects). Moreover, most of these methods collect features separately for drugs and cell lines but fail to consider the pairwise interactions between drugs and cell …
Breast Density Classification Using Deep Learning, Conrad Thomas Testagrose
Breast Density Classification Using Deep Learning, Conrad Thomas Testagrose
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Breast density screenings are an accepted means to determine a patient's predisposed risk of breast cancer development. Although the direct correlation is not fully understood, breast cancer risk increases with higher levels of mammographic breast density. Radiologists visually assess a patient's breast density using mammogram images and assign a density score based on four breast density categories outlined by the Breast Imaging and Reporting Data Systems (BI-RADS). There have been efforts to develop automated tools that assist radiologists with increasing workloads and to help reduce the intra- and inter-rater variability between radiologists. In this thesis, I explored two deep-learning-based approaches …

Extracting Road Surface Marking Features From Aerial Images Using Deep Learning, Michael Kimollo
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The traffic and roadway safety agencies spend significant efforts each year collecting roadway data, including lane configurations and other road surface marking data, such as areas with school zone markings, sidewalks, left turns, right turns, bicycle lanes, etc., for safety analysis and planning purposes. The current manual data collection methods pose significant operational and quality control challenges as they are costly and prone to errors. In addition to that the manual data collection is labor intensive and takes too much time involving high equipment costs, questionable data accuracy guarantees, and concerns about the safety of the crew.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As education technology continues to evolve, the domains of Automatic Short-Answer Grading (ASAG) and Automated Misconception Detection (AMD) stand at the forefront of innovative approaches to educational assessment. We explore the transformative potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in revolutionizing these critical areas. Leveraging the remarkable capabilities of LLMs in semantic inference, contextual understanding, and transfer learning, we embark on a comprehensive journey to enhance both ASAG and AMD. On ASAG, we illuminate the efficacy of transfer learning by fine-tuning RoBERTa Large, a state-of-the-art LLM, on task-related corpora, e.g. the Multi-Genre Natural Language Inference (MNLI) corpus. The model's adaptability across …

Assessing The Performance Of A Particle Swarm Optimization Mobility Algorithm In A Hybrid Wi-Fi/Lora Flying Ad Hoc Network, William David Paredes
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research on Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) has increased due to the availability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and the electronic components that control and connect them. Many applications, such as 3D mapping, construction inspection, or emergency response operations could benefit from an application and adaptation of swarm intelligence-based deployments of multiple UAVs. Such groups of cooperating UAVs, through the use of local rules, could be seen as network nodes establishing an ad-hoc network for communication purposes.
One FANET application is to provide communication coverage over an area where communication infrastructure is unavailable. A crucial part of a FANET implementation is …
Application Of Knowledge Graph Techniques On Textbooks, Yutong Yao
Application Of Knowledge Graph Techniques On Textbooks, Yutong Yao
Master's Projects
Textbooks are written and organized in a way that facilitates learning and understanding. Sections like glossary terms at the end of a textbook provide guidance on the topic of interest. However, it takes manual effort to create the index terms in the glossary that highlight the key referenced terminologies and related terms. Knowledge graphs, which have been used to represent and even reason over data and knowledge, can potentially capture textbook’s important terms, concepts, and their relations. Popular since the initial introduction by Google Knowledge Graphs (KGs), they combine graph and data to capture and model enormous amounts of relational …
A Novel Efficient Deep Learning Framework For Facial Inpainting - Face Reconstruction From Masked Images, Akshay Ravi
A Novel Efficient Deep Learning Framework For Facial Inpainting - Face Reconstruction From Masked Images, Akshay Ravi
Master's Projects
The use of face masks due to the covid-19 pandemic has made surveillance of people very difficult. Since a mask covers most of the facial components, security cameras are rendered of little to no use in the identification of criminals. In order to realize what a face looks like behind a mask, we have to construct the facial features in the masked region. On a higher level, this falls under the field of image inpainting, i.e. filling missing regions of images or correcting irregularities in images. Current research on image inpainting shows promising results on images that have missing/incorrect patches …

In this article, we address two key challenges in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) setting, sample inefficiency, and slow learning, with a dual-neural network (NN)-driven learning approach. In the proposed approach, we use two deep NNs with independent initialization to robustly approximate the action-value function in the presence of image inputs. In particular, we develop a temporal difference (TD) error-driven learning (EDL) approach, where we introduce a set of linear transformations of the TD error to directly update the parameters of each layer in the deep NN. We demonstrate theoretically that the cost minimized by the EDL regime is an approximation …
Symbolic Computation Of Squared Amplitudes In High Energy Physics With Machine Learning, Abdulhakim Alnuqaydan
Symbolic Computation Of Squared Amplitudes In High Energy Physics With Machine Learning, Abdulhakim Alnuqaydan
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The calculation of particle interaction squared amplitudes is a key step in the calculation of cross sections in high-energy physics. These complex calculations are currently performed using domain-specific symbolic algebra tools, where the computational time escalates rapidly with an increase in the number of loops and final state particles. This dissertation introduces an innovative approach: employing a transformer-based sequence-to-sequence model capable of accurately predicting squared amplitudes of Standard Model processes up to one-loop order when trained on symbolic sequence pairs. The primary objective of this work is to significantly reduce the computational time and, more importantly, develop a model that …

Standard off-host tick census techniques are generally inefficient for larval stages. Also, such techniques expose the investigator to environmental hazards including tick bites. Mechanical devices are an option which were tested under field conditions for proof of concept and in side-by-side comparison to the standard techniques. The tick-vac collected more ticks than the legging technique, but with lower frequency of positive detections. It may have utility for sampling small areas, such as weedy corrals suspected of harboring ticks. Different configurations of tick-bots, robotic vehicles with flags, depended on intensive operator control to avoid obstacles, limiting operation to line of sight. …

BACKGROUND: Demand for head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy data in algorithmic development has prompted increased image dataset sharing. Medical images must comply with data protection requirements so that re-use is enabled without disclosing patient identifiers. Defacing, i.e., the removal of facial features from images, is often considered a reasonable compromise between data protection and re-usability for neuroimaging data. While defacing tools have been developed by the neuroimaging community, their acceptability for radiotherapy applications have not been explored. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the impact of available defacing algorithms on HNC organs at risk (OARs).
METHODS: A publicly available dataset …

Development Of Machine Learning Based Approach To Predict Fuel Consumption And Maintenance Cost Of Heavy-Duty Vehicles Using Diesel And Alternative Fuels, Sasanka Katreddi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the major contributors of human-made greenhouse gases (GHG) namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (NOX) in the transportation sector and heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) contributing to about 27% of the overall fraction. In addition to the rapid increase in global temperature, airborne pollutants from diesel vehicles also present a risk to human health. Even a small improvement that could potentially drive energy savings to the century-old mature diesel technology could yield a significant impact on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. With the increasing focus on reducing emissions and operating costs, there is a need for efficient and …

AI-supported algorithms, particularly generative models, have been successfully used in a variety of different contexts. This work employs a generative modeling approach to unfold detector effects specifically tailored for exclusive reactions that involve multiparticle final states. Our study demonstrates the preservation of correlations between kinematic variables in a multidimensional phase space. We perform a full closure test on two-pion photoproduction pseudodata generated with a realistic model in the kinematics of the Jefferson Lab CLAS g11 experiment. The overlap of different reaction mechanisms leading to the same final state associated with the CLAS detector’s nontrivial effects represents an ideal test case …

Comments Of The Cordell Institute On Ai Accountability, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog, Jordan Francis
Scholarship@WashULaw
These comments are a response to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's 2023 request for comment on AI accountability (AI Accountability RFC, NTIA–2023–0005).
Responding to NTIA’s recent inquiry into AI assurance and accountability, we offer two main arguments regarding the importance of substantive legal protections. First, a myopic focus on concepts of transparency, bias mitigation, and ethics (for which procedural compliance efforts such as audits, assessments, and certifications are proxies) is insufficient when it comes to the design and implementation of accountable AI systems. We call rules built around transparency and bias mitigation “AI half-measures,” because they provide the appearance …

Image-based localization has been widely used for autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented reality, etc., and this is carried out by matching a query image taken from a cell phone or vehicle dashcam to a large scale of geo-tagged reference images, such as satellite/aerial images or Google Street Views. However, the problem remains challenging due to the inconsistency between the query images and the large-scale reference datasets regarding various light and weather conditions. To tackle this issue, this work proposes a novel view synthesis framework equipped with deep generative models, which can merge the unique features from the outdated reference dataset with …

There is a great demand for an efficient security framework which can secure IoT systems from potential adversarial attacks. However, it is challenging to design a suitable security model for IoT considering the dynamic and distributed nature of IoT. This motivates the researchers to focus more on investigating the role of machine learning (ML) in the designing of security models. A brief analysis of different ML algorithms for IoT security is discussed along with the advantages and limitations of ML algorithms. Existing studies state that ML algorithms suffer from the problem of high computational overhead and risk of privacy leakage. …

Real-time fall detection using a wearable sensor remains a challenging problem due to high gait variability. Furthermore, finding the type of sensor to use and the optimal location of the sensors are also essential factors for real-time fall-detection systems. This work presents real-time fall-detection methods using deep learning models. Early detection of falls, followed by pneumatic protection, is one of the most effective means of ensuring the safety of the elderly. First, we developed and compared different data-segmentation techniques for sliding windows. Next, we implemented various techniques to balance the datasets because collecting fall datasets in the real-time setting has …

Analysis of human gait using 3-dimensional co-occurrence skeleton joints extracted from Lidar sensor data has been shown a viable method for predicting person identity. The co-occurrence based networks rely on the spatial changes between frames of each joint in the skeleton data sequence. Normally, this data is obtained using a Lidar skeleton extraction method to estimate these co-occurrence features from raw Lidar frames, which can be prone to incorrect joint estimations when part of the body is occluded. These datasets can also be time consuming and expensive to collect and typically offer a small number of samples for training and …

Deep learning (DL)-based medical imaging and image segmentation algorithms achieve impressive performance on many benchmarks. Yet the efficacy of deep learning methods for future clinical applications may become questionable due to the lack of ability to reason with uncertainty and interpret probable areas of failures in prediction decisions. Therefore, it is desired that such a deep learning model for segmentation classification is able to reliably predict its confidence measure and map back to the original imaging cases to interpret the prediction decisions. In this work, uncertainty estimation for multiorgan segmentation task is evaluated to interpret the predictive modeling in DL …

This paper presents a novel deep-learning (DL)-based approach for classifying digitally modulated signals, which involves the use of capsule networks (CAPs) together with the cyclic cumulant (CC) features of the signals. These were blindly estimated using cyclostationary signal processing (CSP) and were then input into the CAP for training and classification. The classification performance and the generalization abilities of the proposed approach were tested using two distinct datasets that contained the same types of digitally modulated signals, but had distinct generation parameters. The results showed that the classification of digitally modulated signals using CAPs and CCs proposed in the paper …
