Two-Stage Calibration And Optimization Method For Microscopic Traffic Simulation Model Parameters Based On Neural Network Surrogate Models, Yijia Liu, Chenjing Zhou, Dong Pan, Jian Rong, Yang Xiao

Journal of System Simulation

A two-stage calibration and optimization method is proposed to address the problem that parameter calibration methods for microscopic traffic simulation models are time-consuming. In the first stage, a surrogate model based on neural networks is trained to establish the mapping relationship between model parameters and evaluation indicators, and a genetic algorithm (GA) is combined to screen candidate parameters. In the second stage, after obtaining the approximate optimal parameters, by employing this set of parameters as initial values, a genetic algorithm is re-executed by combining the real simulation model for optimization to further improve calibration accuracy. Experimental results show that the …

What Makes A Modern Attention Implementation?, Brian H. Slonim

Master's Theses

Since the seminal assertion by Vaswani et al. in 2017 that “Attention Is All You Need,” transformer models have risen to ubiquity due to their ability to learn extremely complex patterns from sequence data, culminating in the unprecedented generative capabilities of large language models. These models’ strength lies in their scale: hundreds of millions (e.g., BERT-LARGE) to billions or trillions of learned parameters. Running inference with these models, let alone training them, would be intractable without significant innovations in the hardware and software that support them. This need has driven an enormous demand for GPU compute and associated software ecosystems, …

Attitude Control Of Quadrotor Uav Based On Disturbance Observer And Command Filtering, Boning Li, Ming Chen, Shuchang Qi, Haoran Meng, Lei Wang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A finite-time fault-tolerant control scheme based on backstepping was proposed for the attitude tracking control problem of quadrotor UAVs. A finite-time neural network disturbance observer was designed, which could quickly compensate for the impacts of actuator failures and external disturbances, thereby enhancing the system's robustness. A first-order command filter and a compensation mechanism were introduced, which could avoid the computational complexity caused by differentiating the virtual control law and eliminate the influence of filtering errors. The hyperbolic tangent function was selected as the constraint function for the input torque, which restricted the input signal to prevent excessive magnitude …

Congenital heart disease (CHD) stands as the leading congenital anomaly which affects pediatric populations throughout the world. The effectiveness of treatment depends on both early diagnosis and accurate identification but echocardiography requires manual interpretation which proves time-consuming and inconsistent especially when examining pediatric patients with their distinct cardiac systems. The research aims to create a deep learning-based diagnostic framework which uses ECG data to identify coronary artery disease subtypes in pediatric patients. The model uses high-quality datasets from Dr. Ignacio Lugones to extract R-R intervals and QRS durations through convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The system addresses pediatric-specific challenges while enhancing …

The Chinese Room And Creating Consciousness: How Recent Strides In Ai Technology Revitalize A Classic Debate, Thomas Held Dec 2024

The Chinese Room And Creating Consciousness: How Recent Strides In Ai Technology Revitalize A Classic Debate, Thomas Held

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Since 1950, when Alan Turing first posed the question of whether a machine could think, the possibility of artificial consciousness has sparked intense and ongoing debate, and strong positions have been staked out on each side of the argument. On the one hand, the historically popular functionalist school of thought claims that any system capable of producing suitably “conscious” behavior in a given environment should be considered conscious. On the other hand, John Searle’s famous “Chinese Room” argument insists that this cannot be the case, and that consciousness is in all likelihood not artificially reproducible. However, both positions have issues—the …

End-To-End Motion Planning Of Unmanned Vehicles Based On Multimodal Deep Reinforcement Learning, Kaiyuan Ding, Askar Hamdulla, Bin Zhu, Eksan Firkat, Zhengtang Ma

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Since the agent cannot sense the surrounding environment and cannot successfully avoid obstacles, reinforcement learning fails to be generalized to robot motion planning in difficult terrain. Therefore, a solution based on multimodal deep reinforcement learning, which learns to blend proprioceptive states with high-dimensional depth sensor inputs, is proposed for the motion planning of unmanned vehicles. To be specific, proprioceptive states offer contact measurement for immediate reaction, and the unmanned vehicle can learn and forecast environmental changes with its attached visual sensors, proactively navigating around obstacles and uneven terrains numerous time steps ahead. TransProAct (transformer-based proactive action), a unique end-to-end …

Privacy-Preserving Deep Learning Framework For Iot Malware Detection, Sabbir Ahmed Khan

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Cyberattacks on IoT devices are accelerating at an unprecedented rate, largely driven by IoT malware activities. The IoT malware attacks typically comprise three stages: intrusion, infection, and monetization. Existing IoT malware detection methods fail to identify malicious activities at the intrusion and infection stages and thus cannot stop potential attacks timely. In our research, we have leveraged power side-channel information as input to our deep learning model to identify malware at early stages of intrusion on IoT devices. But, deploying a resource-intensive deep learning model on highly resource-constrained IoT devices is a significant challenge. Consequently, utilizing a Machine Learning as …

Social Science - All Scholarship

This work formulates the hazard prediction problem while addressing the research question: Can machine learning create a model to automatically recognize patterns that correspond to hazard state conditions during a mission-critical operation? Supervised learning models were trained and tested on data observed from mission simulators, which allowed for safe observation of dynamic system states and undesirable casualty events. The prediction task was formulated as a binary classification problem, producing the probability of being in a hazard state at time t and providing situational awareness of a possible imminent loss. Several modeling architectures were investigated: neural networks, logistic regression, a support …

VMASC Publications

Adversarial attacks pose significant threats to Android malware detection by undermining the effectiveness of machine learning-based systems. The rapid increase in Android apps complicates the management of malicious software that can compromise user defense solutions. Many current Android defense techniques rely on deep learning methods. Malicious users exploit GAN-based attacks to achieve adversarial attack transferability and deceive target models by crafting adversarial examples based on known models. We propose a new model based on a Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN) to detect GAN-based attacks. This model incorporates a gradient penalty to enhance the detection rate of the target model. Our …

The Combined Focal Loss And Dice Loss Function Improves The Segmentation Of Beta-Sheets In Medium-Resolution Cryo-Electron-Microscopy Density Maps, Yongcheng Mu, Thu Nguyen, Bryan Hawickhorst, Willy Wriggers, Jiangwen Sun, Jing He

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Although multiple neural networks have been proposed for detecting secondary structures from medium-resolution (5–10 Å) cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) maps, the loss functions used in the existing deep learning networks are primarily based on cross-entropy loss, which is known to be sensitive to class imbalances. To monitor and tune the performance of various loss functions for the secondary structure detection problem, we investigated five loss functions: cross-entropy, Focal loss, Dice loss, and two combined loss functions. Using a U-Net architecture in our DeepSSETracer method and a dataset composed of 1,355 box-cropped atomic-structure/density-map pairs, we found that a newly designed loss function …

A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor Jan 2024

A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature demonstrates that autonomous UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have the po- tential to be utilized for wildfire surveillance. This advanced technology empowers firefighters by providing them with critical information, thereby facilitating more informed decision-making processes. This thesis applies deep Q-learning techniques to the problem of control policy design under the objective that the UAVs collectively identify the maximum number of locations that are under fire, assuming the UAVs can share their observations. The prohibitively large state space underlying the control policy motivates a neural network approximation, but prior work used only convolutional layers to extract spatial fire information from …

Fraud Pattern Detection For Nft Markets, Andrew Leppla, Jorge Olmos, Jaideep Lamba

SMU Data Science Review

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) enable ownership and transfer of digital assets using blockchain technology. As a relatively new financial asset class, NFTs lack robust oversight and regulations. These conditions create an environment that is susceptible to fraudulent activity and market manipulation schemes. This study examines the buyer-seller network transactional data from some of the most popular NFT marketplaces (e.g., AtomicHub, OpenSea) to identify and predict fraudulent activity. To accomplish this goal multiple features such as price, volume, and network metrics were extracted from NFT transactional data. These were fed into a Multiple-Scale Convolutional Neural Network that predicts suspected fraudulent activity based …

For the training and validation sets, I employed the ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) trajectory results and ground state DFT calculations, including the energy, force, and virial database from highly diverse compositions, temperatures, and pressures following a “High Entropy Strategy.” The Deep …

Hierarchical Hourglass Convolutional Network For Efficient Video Classification, Yi Tan, Yanbin Hao, Hao Zhang, Shuo Wang Oct 2022

Hierarchical Hourglass Convolutional Network For Efficient Video Classification, Yi Tan, Yanbin Hao, Hao Zhang, Shuo Wang

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

Videos naturally contain dynamic variation over the temporal axis, which will result in the same visual clues (e.g., semantics, objects) changing their scale, position, and perspective patterns between adjacent frames. A primary trend in video CNN is adopting spatial-2D convolution for spatial semantics and temporal-1D convolution for temporal dynamics. Though the direction achieves a favorable balance between efficiency and efficacy, it suffers from misalignment of visual clues with large displacements. Particularly, rigid temporal convolution would fail to capture correct motions when a specific target moves out of the reception field of temporal convolution between adjacent frames. To tackle large visual displacements …

One-Stage Blind Source Separation Via A Sparse Autoencoder Framework, Jason Anthony Dabin May 2022

One-Stage Blind Source Separation Via A Sparse Autoencoder Framework, Jason Anthony Dabin

Dissertations

Blind source separation (BSS) is the process of recovering individual source transmissions from a received mixture of co-channel signals without a priori knowledge of the channel mixing matrix or transmitted source signals. The received co-channel composite signal is considered to be captured across an antenna array or sensor network and is assumed to contain sparse transmissions, as users are active and inactive aperiodically over time. An unsupervised machine learning approach using an artificial feedforward neural network sparse autoencoder with one hidden layer is formulated for blindly recovering the channel matrix and source activity of co-channel transmissions. The BSS sparse autoencoder …

This paper addresses the task of span-level emotion cause analysis (SECA). It is a finer-grained emotion cause analysis (ECA) task, which aims to identify the specific emotion cause span(s) behind certain emotions in text. In this paper, we formalize SECA as a sequence tagging task for which several variants of neural network-based sequence tagging models to extract specific emotion cause span(s) in the given context. These models combine different types of encoding and decoding approaches. Furthermore, to make our models more "emotionally sensitive'', we utilize the multi-head attention mechanism to enhance the representation of context. Experimental evaluations conducted on two …

How Do You Visit: Identifying Addicts From Large-Scale Transit Records Via Scenario Deep Embedding, Canghong Jin, Dongkai Chen, Zhiwei Lin, Zemin Liu, Minghui Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Identification of individuals based on transit modes is of great importance in user tracking systems. However, identifying users in real-life studies is not trivial owing to the following challenges: 1) activity data containing both temporal and spatial context are high-order and sparse; 2) traditional two-step classifiers depend on trajectory patterns as input features, which limits accuracy especially in the case of scattered and diverse data; 3) in some cases, there are few positive instances and they are difficult to detect. Therefore, approaches involving statistics-based or trajectory-based features do not work effectively. Deep learning methods also suffer from the problem of …
