Seek And Classify: End-To-End Joint Multi-Signal Detection And Classification Using Deep Learning, Prashant Subedi

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The rise in the use of wireless communication has led to the problem of spectrum scarcity in licensed bands. The popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) requires innovative solutions that maximize the use of available spectrum to support the increasing number of connected devices. This thesis tackles two significant problems in wireless communication: the need for efficient spectrum sensing techniques and the scarcity of large, diverse raw in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) datasets.

The ability to detect and classify modulation of the signals efficiently can enable a cognitive radio to monitor the spectrum activity in real time and utilize unused …

Towards Intelligent Runtime Framework For Distributed Heterogeneous Systems, Polykarpos Thomadakis Aug 2023

Towards Intelligent Runtime Framework For Distributed Heterogeneous Systems, Polykarpos Thomadakis

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Scientific applications strive for increased memory and computing performance, requiring massive amounts of data and time to produce results. Applications utilize large-scale, parallel computing platforms with advanced architectures to accommodate their needs. However, developing performance-portable applications for modern, heterogeneous platforms requires lots of effort and expertise in both the application and systems domains. This is more relevant for unstructured applications whose workflow is not statically predictable due to their heavily data-dependent nature. One possible solution for this problem is the introduction of an intelligent Domain-Specific Language (iDSL) that transparently helps to maintain correctness, hides the idiosyncrasies of lowlevel hardware, and …

Inverse Mappers For Qcd Global Analysis, Manal Almaeen Aug 2023

Inverse Mappers For Qcd Global Analysis, Manal Almaeen

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Inverse problems – using measured observations to determine unknown parameters – are well motivated but challenging in many scientific problems. Mapping parameters to observables is a well-posed problem with unique solutions, and therefore can be solved with differential equations or linear algebra solvers. However, the inverse problem requires backward mapping from observable to parameter space, which is often nonunique. Consequently, solving inverse problems is ill-posed and a far more challenging computational problem.

Our motivated application in this dissertation is the inverse problems in nuclear physics that characterize the internal structure of the hadrons. We first present a machine learning framework …

The Development Of Artificial Intelligence-Based To Ols For Expert Peer Review Of Radiotherapy Treatment Plans, Mary Gronberg Aug 2023

The Development Of Artificial Intelligence-Based To Ols For Expert Peer Review Of Radiotherapy Treatment Plans, Mary Gronberg

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Creating a patient-specific radiation treatment plan is a time-consuming and operator-dependent manual process. The treatment planner adjusts the planning parameters in a trial-and-error fashion in an effort to balance the competing clinical objectives of tumor coverage and normal tissue sparing. Often, a plan is selected because it meets basic organ at risk dose thresholds for severe toxicity; however, it is evident that a plan with a decreased risk of normal tissue complication probability could be achieved. This discrepancy between “acceptable” and “best possible” plan is magnified if either the physician or treatment planner lacks focal expertise in the disease site. …

Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Image-Based Data Representation, Amber Surles Aug 2023

Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Image-Based Data Representation, Amber Surles

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Epilepsy is a recurrence of seizures caused by a disorder of the brain in over 3.4 million people nationwide. Some people are able to predict their seizures based off prodrome, which is an early sign or symptom that usually resembles mood changes or a euphoric feeling even days to an hour before occurrence. Consequently, the natural instincts of the body to react to an upcoming attack lends credence to the existence of a pre-ictal state that precedes seizure episodes. Physicians and researchers have thus sought for an automated approach for predicting or detecting seizures.

In this research, we evaluate the …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This report introduces a thorough analysis of wildfire prediction using satellite imagery by applying deep learning techniques. To find wildfire-prone geographical data, we use U-Net, a convolutional neural network known for its effectiveness in biomedical image segmentation. The input to the model is the Sentinel-2 multispectral images to supply a complete view of the terrain features.

We evaluated the wildfire risk prediction model’s performance using several metrics. The model showed high accuracy, with a weighted average F1 score of 0.91 and an AUC-ROC score of 0.972. These results suggest that the model is exceptionally good at predicting the location of …

Motion Synthesis And Control For Autonomous Agents Using Generative Models And Reinforcement Learning, Pei Xu Aug 2023

Motion Synthesis And Control For Autonomous Agents Using Generative Models And Reinforcement Learning, Pei Xu

All Dissertations

Imitating and predicting human motions have wide applications in both graphics and robotics, from developing realistic models of human movement and behavior in immersive virtual worlds and games to improving autonomous navigation for service agents deployed in the real world. Traditional approaches for motion imitation and prediction typically rely on pre-defined rules to model agent behaviors or use reinforcement learning with manually designed reward functions. Despite impressive results, such approaches cannot effectively capture the diversity of motor behaviors and the decision making capabilities of human beings. Furthermore, manually designing a model or reward function to explicitly describe human motion characteristics …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Facial expressions play a crucial role in human communication, serving as a powerful means to convey emotions. However, classifying facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) can be challenging, especially with small datasets and images. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is an active area of research, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) being widely employed for classification. In this research, we propose a CNN-based approach for FER that utilizes both original and augmented datasets to enhance classification accuracy. Experimental results on the FER2013 dataset show test accuracies of 63.39% and 64.59% for the original and augmented datasets, respectively, in a seven-class classification task. …

Data Is The New Gold: A Singapore Perspective On The Duty Of Care Concerning A Dataset’S Role In Contributing To Bias And Ai Hallucinations, Daniel Seah Aug 2023

Data Is The New Gold: A Singapore Perspective On The Duty Of Care Concerning A Dataset’S Role In Contributing To Bias And Ai Hallucinations, Daniel Seah

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Amidst the trends and advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, the dataset’s key role in creating AI harms is a constant. Yet the literature’s attention is typically focussed on the machinelearning’s role, from which the dataset’s role is examined usually in terms of its potential for bias. Datasets also contribute to AI hallucinations. Again, the literature focuses on the composite roles of datasets and AI models in hallucinations, in isolation from a dataset’s contributory role in creating bias. Therefore, the overlapping and distinctive roles of datasets, as a dual contributor, are understudied in the literature. Through the legal concept of …

Towards A Robust Defense: A Multifaceted Approach To The Detection And Mitigation Of Neural Backdoor Attacks Through Feature Space Exploration And Analysis, Liuwan Zhu Aug 2023

Towards A Robust Defense: A Multifaceted Approach To The Detection And Mitigation Of Neural Backdoor Attacks Through Feature Space Exploration And Analysis, Liuwan Zhu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

From voice assistants to self-driving vehicles, machine learning(ML), especially deep learning, revolutionizes the way we work and live, through the wide adoption in a broad range of applications. Unfortunately, this widespread use makes deep learning-based systems a desirable target for cyberattacks, such as generating adversarial examples to fool a deep learning system to make wrong decisions. In particular, many recent studies have revealed that attackers can corrupt the training of a deep learning model, e.g., through data poisoning, or distribute a deep learning model they created with “backdoors” planted, e.g., distributed as part of a software library, so that the …

Flood: A Flexible Invariant Learning Framework For Out-Of-Distribution Generalization On Graphs, Yang Liu, Xiang Ao, Fuli Feng, Yunshan Ma, Kuan Li, Tat‑Seng Chua, Qing He Aug 2023

Flood: A Flexible Invariant Learning Framework For Out-Of-Distribution Generalization On Graphs, Yang Liu, Xiang Ao, Fuli Feng, Yunshan Ma, Kuan Li, Tat‑Seng Chua, Qing He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable success in various domains but most of them are developed under the in-distribution assumption. Under out-of-distribution (OOD) settings, they suffer from the distribution shift between the training set and the test set and may not generalize well to the test distribution. Several methods have tried the invariance principle to improve the generalization of GNNs in OOD settings. However, in previous solutions, the graph encoder is immutable after the invariant learning and cannot be adapted to the target distribution flexibly. Confronting the distribution shift, a flexible encoder with refinement to the target distribution can …

Mastering Stock Markets With Efficient Mixture Of Diversified Trading Experts, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Wanqi Xue, Xiaoxuan Lou, Bo An Aug 2023

Mastering Stock Markets With Efficient Mixture Of Diversified Trading Experts, Shuo Sun, Xinrun Wang, Wanqi Xue, Xiaoxuan Lou, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantitative stock investment is a fundamental financial task that highly relies on accurate prediction of market status and profitable investment decision making. Despite recent advances in deep learning (DL) have shown stellar performance on capturing trading opportunities in the stochastic stock market, the performance of existing DL methods is unstable with sensitivity to network initialization and hyperparameter selection. One major limitation of existing works is that investment decisions are made based on one individual neural network predictor with high uncertainty, which is inconsistent with the workflow in real-world trading firms. To tackle this limitation, we propose AlphaMix, a novel three-stage …

Decoding The Underlying Meaning Of Multimodal Hateful Memes, Ming Shan Hee, Wen Haw Chong, Roy Ka-Wei Lee Aug 2023

Decoding The Underlying Meaning Of Multimodal Hateful Memes, Ming Shan Hee, Wen Haw Chong, Roy Ka-Wei Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent studies have proposed models that yielded promising performance for the hateful meme classification task. Nevertheless, these proposed models do not generate interpretable explanations that uncover the underlying meaning and support the classification output. A major reason for the lack of explainable hateful meme methods is the absence of a hateful meme dataset that contains ground truth explanations for benchmarking or training. Intuitively, having such explanations can educate and assist content moderators in interpreting and removing flagged hateful memes. This paper address this research gap by introducing Hateful meme with Reasons Dataset (HatReD), which is a new multimodal hateful meme …

Transferable Curricula Through Difficulty Conditioned Generators, Sidney Tio, Pradeep Varakantham Aug 2023

Transferable Curricula Through Difficulty Conditioned Generators, Sidney Tio, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Advancements in reinforcement learning (RL) have demonstrated superhuman performance in complex tasks such as Starcraft, Go, Chess etc. However, knowledge transfer from Artificial "Experts" to humans remain a significant challenge. A promising avenue for such transfer would be the use of curricula. Recent methods in curricula generation focuses on training RL agents efficiently, yet such methods rely on surrogate measures to track student progress, and are not suited for training robots in the real world (or more ambitiously humans). In this paper, we introduce a method named Parameterized Environment Response Model (PERM) that shows promising results in training RL agents …

Generalization Through Diversity: Improving Unsupervised Environment Design, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham, Dexun Li Aug 2023

Generalization Through Diversity: Improving Unsupervised Environment Design, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham, Dexun Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Agent decision making using Reinforcement Learning (RL) heavily relies on either a model or simulator of the environment (e.g., moving in an 8x8 maze with three rooms, playing Chess on an 8x8 board). Due to this dependence, small changes in the environment (e.g., positions of obstacles in the maze, size of the board) can severely affect the effectiveness of the policy learned by the agent. To that end, existing work has proposed training RL agents on an adaptive curriculum of environments (generated automatically) to improve performance on out-of-distribution (OOD) test scenarios. Specifically, existing research has employed the potential for the …

Learning To Send Reinforcements: Coordinating Multi-Agent Dynamic Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Via Reinforcement Learning, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau Aug 2023

Learning To Send Reinforcements: Coordinating Multi-Agent Dynamic Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Via Reinforcement Learning, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of coordinating multiple agents in a dynamic police patrol scheduling via a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach. Our approach utilizes Multi-Agent Value Function Approximation (MAVFA) with a rescheduling heuristic to learn dispatching and rescheduling policies jointly. Often, police operations are divided into multiple sectors for more effective and efficient operations. In a dynamic setting, incidents occur throughout the day across different sectors, disrupting initially-planned patrol schedules. To maximize policing effectiveness, police agents from different sectors cooperate by sending reinforcements to support one another in their incident response and even routine patrol. This poses an interesting research challenge …

Decompiling X86 Deep Neural Network Executables, Zhibo Liu, Yuanyuan Yuan, Shuai Wang, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to their widespread use on heterogeneous hardware devices, deep learning (DL) models are compiled into executables by DL compilers to fully leverage low-level hardware primitives. This approach allows DL computations to be undertaken at low cost across a variety of computing platforms, including CPUs, GPUs, and various hardware accelerators. We present BTD (Bin to DNN), a decompiler for deep neural network (DNN) executables. BTD takes DNN executables and outputs full model specifications, including types of DNN operators, network topology, dimensions, and parameters that are (nearly) identical to those of the input models. BTD delivers a practical framework to process …

Document-Level Relation Extraction Via Separate Relation Representation And Logical Reasoning, Heyan Huang, Changsen Yuan, Qian Liu, Yixin Cao Aug 2023

Document-Level Relation Extraction Via Separate Relation Representation And Logical Reasoning, Heyan Huang, Changsen Yuan, Qian Liu, Yixin Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level relation extraction (RE) extends the identification of entity/mentions’ relation from the single sentence to the long document. It is more realistic and poses new challenges to relation representation and reasoning skills. In this article, we propose a novel model, SRLR, using Separate Relation Representation and Logical Reasoning considering the indirect relation representation and complex reasoning of evidence sentence problems. Specifically, we first expand the judgment of relational facts from the entity-level to the mention-level, highlighting fine-grained information to capture the relation representation for the entity pair. Second, we propose a logical reasoning module to identify evidence sentences and conduct …

Semantically Constitutive Entities In Knowledge Graphs, Chong Cher Chia, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw Aug 2023

Semantically Constitutive Entities In Knowledge Graphs, Chong Cher Chia, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge graphs are repositories of facts about a world. In this work, we seek to distill the set of entities or nodes in a knowledge graph into a specified number of constitutive nodes, whose embeddings would be retained. Intuitively, the remaining accessory nodes could have their original embeddings “forgotten”, and yet reconstitutable from those of the retained constitutive nodes. The constitutive nodes thus represent the semantically constitutive entities, which retain the core semantics of the knowledge graph. We propose a formulation as well as algorithmic solutions to minimize the reconstitution errors. The derived constitutive nodes are validated empirically both in …

Multi-Granularity Detector For Vulnerability Fixes, Truong Giang Nguyen, Cong, Thanh Le, Hong Jin Kang, Ratnadira Widyasari, Chengran Yang, Zhipeng Zhao, Bowen Xu, Jiayuan Zhou, Xin Xia, Ahmed E. Hassan, David Lo, David Lo Aug 2023

Multi-Granularity Detector For Vulnerability Fixes, Truong Giang Nguyen, Cong, Thanh Le, Hong Jin Kang, Ratnadira Widyasari, Chengran Yang, Zhipeng Zhao, Bowen Xu, Jiayuan Zhou, Xin Xia, Ahmed E. Hassan, David Lo, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increasing reliance on Open Source Software, users are exposed to third-party library vulnerabilities. Software Composition Analysis (SCA) tools have been created to alert users of such vulnerabilities. SCA requires the identification of vulnerability-fixing commits. Prior works have proposed methods that can automatically identify such vulnerability-fixing commits. However, identifying such commits is highly challenging, as only a very small minority of commits are vulnerability fixing. Moreover, code changes can be noisy and difficult to analyze. We observe that noise can occur at different levels of detail, making it challenging to detect vulnerability fixes accurately. To address these challenges and …

Numgpt: Improving Numeracy Ability Of Generative Pre-Trained Models, Zhihua Jin, Xin Jiang, Xiangbo Wang, Qun Liu, Yong Wang, Xiaozhe Ren, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing generative pre-trained language models (e.g., GPT) focus on modeling the language structure and semantics of general texts. However, those models do not consider the numerical properties of numbers and cannot perform robustly on numerical reasoning tasks (e.g., math word problems and measurement estimation). In this paper, we propose NumGPT, a generative pre-trained model that explicitly models the numerical properties of numbers in texts. Specifically, it leverages a prototype-based numeral embedding to encode the mantissa of the number and an individual embedding to encode the exponent of the number. A numeral-aware loss function is designed to integrate numerals into the …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a unique phenomenon that has been observed in astronauts who have undergone long-duration spaceflight (LDSF). The syndrome is characterized by distinct imaging and clinical findings including optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shift, posterior globe flattening, and choroidal folds. SANS serves a large barrier to planetary spaceflight such as a mission to Mars and has been noted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a high risk based on its likelihood to occur and its severity to human health and mission performance. While it is a large barrier to future spaceflight, the underlying …

Prompt-Based Tuning Of Transformer Models For Multi-Center Medical Image Segmentation Of Head And Neck Cancer, Numan Saeed, Muhammad Ridzuan, Roba Al Majzoub, Mohammad Yaqub

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Medical image segmentation is a vital healthcare endeavor requiring precise and efficient models for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Vision transformer (ViT)-based segmentation models have shown great performance in accomplishing this task. However, to build a powerful backbone, the self-attention block of ViT requires large-scale pre-training data. The present method of modifying pre-trained models entails updating all or some of the backbone parameters. This paper proposes a novel fine-tuning strategy for adapting a pretrained transformer-based segmentation model on data from a new medical center. This method introduces a small number of learnable parameters, termed prompts, into the input space (less than …

On Training Neurons With Bounded Compilations, Lance Kennedy Jul 2023

On Training Neurons With Bounded Compilations, Lance Kennedy

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Knowledge compilation offers a formal approach to explaining and verifying the behavior of machine learning systems, such as neural networks. Unfortunately, compiling even an individual neuron into a tractable representation such as an Ordered Binary Decision Diagram (OBDD), is an NP-hard problem. In this thesis, we consider the problem of training a neuron from data, subject to the constraint that it has a compact representation as an OBDD. Our approach is based on the observation that a neuron can be compiled into an OBDD in polytime if (1) the neuron has integer weights, and (2) its aggregate weight is bounded. …
