This study will be conducted with the hypothesis that unique phenolic secondary metabolites will be produced in the roots of D. jamesii. It will be of interest to determine if the isolated metabolites exhibit biomedically related activities. It will also be of interest to investigate whether the …

Environmental Forensics Of Complexly Contaminated Sites: A Complimentary Fingerprinting Approach, Michael A. Kruge, Azucena Lara-Gonzalo, José Luis Gallego Jan 2020

Environmental Forensics Of Complexly Contaminated Sites: A Complimentary Fingerprinting Approach, Michael A. Kruge, Azucena Lara-Gonzalo, José Luis Gallego

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The environmental forensics approach is most often applied in petroleum and fuel spill incidents, for which sophisticated chemical fingerprinting procedures have evolved. In cases in which pollutant discharges occur in settings with prior contamination, more care must be taken in source discrimination, requiring further advances in methodology. Additional obstacles can arise if the spill is an atypical industrial discharge. This would necessitate painstaking characterization of unfamiliar substances lying outside of existing regulatory regimes and thus overlooked by mandated analytical protocols (i.e., contaminants of emerging concern). Towards these ends, this paper presents a systematic, multi-faceted GC-MS approach using the saturated, aromatic, …

There have been numerous studies to develop fast, cost effective hyperpolaried (HP) contrast agents with higher polarization values that can be potentially employed for magnetic resonance clinical imaging. Some of the currently used contrast agents are based on 129Xe hyperpolarized nucleus. However, one of the problems associated with this approach, is the high cost of the produced hyperpolarized contrast agents. In addition, the other important practical problem is that the currently used clinical …

Volcanic Impact On Stratospheric Chlorine Chemistry And Perchlorate Formation: Evidence From Ice Cores, Joshua Andrew Kennedy Jan 2020

Volcanic Impact On Stratospheric Chlorine Chemistry And Perchlorate Formation: Evidence From Ice Cores, Joshua Andrew Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate, suspected to be chemically formed in both the troposphere and stratosphere, has been recently measured in Arctic snow and ice cores. These comprise both discontinuous snow and ice cores from the Canadian Arctic and a continuous record of perchlorate was compiled from an analysis of Greenland ice cores. While the background perchlorate concentration typically is very low, a few spikes in concentration coinciding with deposition of volcanic sulfate were observed in the Greenland record, suggesting that perchlorate levels in the atmosphere may be impacted by volcanic eruptions. As of yet, no work has been done to investigate the connection …

It has a 3-dimensional open-framework structure with intersecting channels. Eight-membered ring square channels can be viewed along the c-axis and 6-membered ring channels along the a- and b-axis. The Li-ions are located in the six-membered ring channels exactly at the opening window to the eight-membered ring channels. The magnetic property …

Technology-Based Culturally Relevant Chemistry Education (Crce), Mercy Adoma Fosu Jan 2020

Technology-Based Culturally Relevant Chemistry Education (Crce), Mercy Adoma Fosu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relevance of chemistry concepts and principles remains a challenge for most students enrolled in college chemistry courses. Part of this problem is the disconnect with what students experience in their every-day lives, and how the material, specifically chemistry content is presented via textbooks, lectures, and laboratory teaching. Moreover, the teaching of general chemistry has traditionally focused on traditional, instructor-centric expository delivery of course materials, that treats students as empty vessels devoid of prior knowledge. Students prior knowledge and experiences are crucial in shaping their understanding of scientific concepts and principles. Even students with relatively low expectations for success in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis is composed to two studies, each of which relies on recent advances in time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to accurately model fluorescence spectra. The first study focuses on evaluating the fluorescence spectrum of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) having a molecular weight of 302. Three isomers are analyzed including dibenzo[a,j]fluoranthene, dibenzo[a,k]fluoranthene and dibenzo[a,l]fluoranthene. These isomers differ in the placement of one of six aromatic rings and in the amount that each molecule deviates from planarity. The TD-DFT methods are used to compute spectra in an environment that simulates solvent (n-hexane). These computed spectra are compared to vibronically resolved experimental …

Allylic Amination And Carbon–Carbon Double Bond Transposition Catalyzed By Cobalt(Ii) Azodioxide Complexes, Kylin A. Emhoff, Ahmed M.H. Salem, Lakshmi Balaraman, Drew M. Kingery, W. Christropher Boyd

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The unusual cobalt(II) diphenylazodioxide complex salts [Co(az)4](PF6)2 and [Co(bpy)(az)2](PF6)2 have been shown to catalyze the allylic amination/C–C double bond transposition reaction of 2-methyl-2-pentene with PhNHOH, with a turnover number of about 4. The mechanism is proposed to involve a nitroso-ene-like transfer of a PhNO moiety from the azodioxide ligand to the alkene, followed by reduction of the organic product to yield a cobalt(III) intermediate, which is itself reduced back to cobalt(II) by PhNHOH, regenerating PhNO. Hetero-Diels-Alder trapping experiments suggest that an “off-metal” mechanism, in which PhNO is released from the …

In this research, a library of nineteen carbamate derivatives of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine were synthesized and characterized, and several derivatives were found to be effective LMWGs. They formed gels in pump oils as well as mixtures of water with ethanol or water with DMSO. The structures of the carbamoyl chains played an important role in the gelation properties, short chain aliphatic derivatives and phenyl carbamates formed gels in more solvents than certain aromatic and dimeric carbamates. The phenyl carbamate gelator was also selected for the encapsulation of …
