In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and 2,6-lutidine, α,α-disubstituted aldehydes condense with electron-rich aromatic aldehydes to yield β, β- disubstituted styrenes. More electron-rich aromatic aldehydes react more rapidly and in higher yield. Preliminary results suggest that the reaction may proceed via the ionization and formal deformylation of an aldol intermediate.

Hybrid nanostructures decorated with glycopolymers are appropriate for biomedical applications. In this paper, the results are obtained from nanographene (NG) decorated with glycoblock copolymer to increase their potential in use in therapies and in examining lectin interactions. A pyren-1-ylmethyl 4-cyano-4-((phenylcarbonothioyl)thio)pentanoate (CPADB-py) chain transfer agent was used in the synthesis of methyl methacrylate glycoblock copolymers (P2 and P3) by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to adhere the polymer to the nanographene surface. Hybrid nanographenes (NG-1 and NG-2) were obtained by the non-covalent interaction of deprotected P2 and P3 with different fructopyranose groups (3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:4,5- di-O-isopropylidene-β-D-fructopyranose and 1-O-methacryloyl-2,3:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-β-D-fructopyranose) in their backbones. Microwave irradiation has become a routine technique in homogeneous and effective heating in organic synthesis. However, its application in enzyme-containing reactions is limited since it can cause denaturation of the enzyme. In this study, we have briefly investigated the effect of microwave heating on the conjugation reaction of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with aldehyde derivative of dextran (D-CHO). The reaction was irradiated by microwave at 50 °C for 5 min. The conjugate was confirmed via GPC, in which the conjugates of HRP and D-CHO coexist with free unbound HRP molecules. Activity studies of HRP revealed that there is a small decrease …

Quercetin, a multifunctional therapeutic agent, is used in various types of cancer. However, its therapeutic effect is limited by virtue of poorly aqueous solubility and instability in the physiological medium. To overcome these limitations, we aimed (i) to design quercetin loaded liposomes with unlinked-PEG4000 with regard to not only surface modification but also solubility enhancement, and (ii) to investigate the antineoplastic effects on HeLa cells. PEG4000 increased the quercetin solubility 2.2 fold. PEG4000 modified liposomes displayed small particle size (254 ± 69 nm), low polydispersity index (0.236 ± 0.018), favorable zeta potential (-35.4 ± 0.6 mV), high quercetin encapsulation efficiency …

The synthesis of fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and their applications have attracted great attention due to their excellent properties. Especially, the unique visible-light absorption and photo-induced electron transfer properties make CQDs available in photocatalytic degradation of organic dye pollutants in water resources. Herein, we synthesized nondoped CQDs and boron-doped CQDs (B-CQDs) by hydrothermal method and compared their photocatalytic degradation activity of methylene blue (MB) and methyl red (MR) dyes under visible light irradiation. The characterization outcomes showed that the optical and structural properties can be easily improved by doping with hetero-atom, thereby photocatalytic performance. As expected, the photodegradation performance …
Equivalence Of The Transition Heat Capacities Of Proteins And Dna, Matthew W. Eskew, Albert S. Benight
Equivalence Of The Transition Heat Capacities Of Proteins And Dna, Matthew W. Eskew, Albert S. Benight
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
It has been reported for many globular proteins that the native heat capacity at 25°C, per gram, is the same. This has been interpreted to indicate that heat capacity is a fundamental property of native proteins that provides important information on molecular structure and stability. Heat capacities for both proteins and DNA has been suggested to be related to universal effects of hydration/solvation on native structures. Here we report on results from thermal denaturation analysis of two well-known proteins, human serum albumin and lysozyme, and a short DNA hairpin. The transition heat capacities at the Tm for the three molecules …

Reductant-Free Ozonolysis Of Alkenes : Acid-Catalyzed Hydration Of Criegee Intermediate, Joshua Osorio
Reductant-Free Ozonolysis Of Alkenes : Acid-Catalyzed Hydration Of Criegee Intermediate, Joshua Osorio
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The in-water ozonolysis of alkenes is an emerging alternative method to the conventional ozonolysis since it eliminates the requirement for a reductive work-up step using expensive and hazardous reductants such as dimethyl sulfide, triphenylphosphine, and zinc in acetic acid. Despite its greenness, it still suffers from competing reactions (such as the Baeyer-Villiger reaction and advanced oxidation process) and poor yields of the carbonyl product. Herein, we report the effect of adding an acid as a catalyst in the formation of carbonyl products from in-water ozonolysis. Styrenes and olefinic natural products were dissolved in a mixture of 95:5 (v/v) acetone-water (c.a.[c] …

Computational Study Of Quorum Quenching Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones By Ion Pairing To Cations, Ashen Anuradha Suduweli Kondage
Dissertations and Theses
Biofilms are the default state of microbial life and their formation on surfaces influences many processes. The coordinated behavior of microorganisms including their growth into biofilms occurs through a process termed quorum sensing during which they excrete specific signaling molecules called autoinducers. Recently it has been observed that Ag+ and Cu2+ ions interact with N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine autoinducers thereby inhibiting quorum sensing. Such inhibitors are called quorum quenchers. In this study, we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the ion pairing between select cations and short chained N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) type autoinducers that are used by gram negative bacteria. …

Isolation and characterization of anticancer activity guided secondary metabolites of endemic Astragalus leucothrix Freyn& Bornm were aimed. Aerial parts of the plant were extracted by maceration method in the solvent system methanol-chloroform (1 : 1) at room temperature. The obtained crude extract was dissolved in purified water. Then, the extract was partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol, respectively. Anticancer activity tests of all the fractions were performed against HeLa and C6 cancer cells. The chloroform fraction that has highest anticancer activity was subjected to chromatographic methods such as column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Pentyl tetratetracontanoate (1), alfalone …
