The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a key role in anodes for rechargeable lithium-based battery technologies. However, a thorough understanding in the mechanisms of SEI formation and evolution remains a major challenge, hindering the rapid development and wide applications of Li-based batteries. Here, we devise a borrowing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity strategy by utilizing a size optimized Ag nanosubstrate to in-situ monitor the formation and evolution of SEI, as well as its structure and chemistry in an ethylene carbonate-based electrolyte. To ensure a reliable in-situ SERS investigation, we designed a strict air-tight Raman cell with a three-electrode configuration. Based on …

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) comprise catalytically active atoms dispersed on supports; they combine the high activity and site uniformity of homogeneous catalysts with the ease of separability of heterogeneous catalysts. However, SACs lack fine control over the active site, provided by ligands in homogeneous catalysts. In this work, we demonstrate that modification of the support with an organic monolayer is a viable approach to improving the catalytic performance. The addition of catechol-type monolayers to a Pd/CeO2 SAC increases its catalytic activity for Suzuki cross-coupling, a central reaction in the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Kinetic trials reveal that the coating …

Long oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) are segments of DNAs having over one hundred nucleotides (nt). They are typically assembled using enzymatic methods such as PCR and ligation from shorter 20 to 60 nt ODNs produced by automated de novo chemical synthesis. While these methods have made many projects in areas such as synthetic biology and protein engineering possible, they have various drawbacks. For example, they cannot produce genes and genomes with long repeats and have difficulty to produce sequences containing stable secondary structures. Here, we report a direct de novo chemical synthesis of 400 nt ODNs, and their isolation from the complex …

Nitrogenase is the only enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of nitrogen gas into ammonia. Nitrogenase is tightly inhibited by the environmental gas carbon monoxide (CO). Many nitrogen fixing bacteria protect nitrogenase from CO inhibition using the protective protein CowN. This work demonstrates that a conserved glutamic acid residue near the C-terminus of Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus CowN is necessary for its function. Mutation of the glutamic acid residue abolishes both CowN’s protection against CO inhibition and the ability of CowN to bind to nitrogenase. In contrast, a conserved C-terminal cysteine residue is not important for CO protection by CowN. Overall, this work …

Investigating The Magnetic And Electronic Properties Of Cobalt(Ii) Heteroscorpionate Isomers, Jamie Dawn Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
Cobalt(II) scorpionates possess distinct electronic and magnetic properties in comparison to other first-row transition metal complexes in this ligand class. One unique property is their significantly downfield paramagnetically shifted 11B NMR signals. The utilization of a heteroscorpionate ligand Tp’ introduces asymmetry to metal scorpionates, producing cis and trans isomers. cis- and trans-Co(Tp’)2 were synthesized and separated by column chromatography. 11B NMR data show cobalt(II) homoscorpionates resonances in a narrow 20 ppm shift range around 270 ppm while cis- and trans-Co(Tp’)2 differ with signals at 230 ppm and 140 ppm, respectively. Paramagnetic NMR studies indicate both isomers maintain the same spin …
