Stability Of Organic Metal Halide Perovskites, S S M Tareq Hossain
Stability Of Organic Metal Halide Perovskites, S S M Tareq Hossain
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Perovskites have emerged as a promising candidate for low-cost production of solar cells. However, the most critical barrier for commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is the inadequate stability of the organic metal halide perovskites (OMHPs). The degradation of OMHPs is induced by light, heat, air, and electrical bias. The known degradation pathways involve the oxidation of I- and Sn2+, dissolution of perovskites by moisture, irreversible reactions with water, ion migration, and ion segregation. To improve the stability of OMHPs various methods are adopted, such as additive engineering, perovskite surface treatment, and composition engineering. Surface ligands are used on top …

Investigating The Behavior Of Redox–Active Organic Molecules In Electrochemical Energy Storage Through Experiment–Guided Computational Simulations, Anton Perera
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The long–anticipated implementation of using renewable sources such as solar and wind to meet the world’s energy demand is still limited by not having appropriate grid–level energy storage systems on a global scale. When considering grid–scale energy storage solutions, environmental concerns, and techno–economic viability play a crucial role in the practical implementation of such technology. To address this, redox–active organic molecules (ROMs) have been explored for many uses including serving as redox–active molecules in redox flow batteries (RFBs) and providing overcharge protection in lithium–ion batteries (LIBs).
Nevertheless, in order to be a major player in electrochemical energy storage, further optimization …

We investigate switching of photoluminescence (PL) from PbS quantum dots (QDs) crosslinked with two different types of photochromic diarylethene molecules, 4,4'-(1-cyclopentene-1,2-diyl)bis[5-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid] (1H) and 4,4'-(1-perfluorocyclopentene-1,2-diyl)bis[5-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid] (2F). Our results show that the QDs crosslinked with the hydrogenated molecule (1H) exhibit a greater amount of switching in photoluminescence intensity compared to QDs crosslinked with the fluorinated molecule (2F). With a combination of differential pulse voltammetry and density functional theory, we attribute the different amount of PL switching to the different energy levels between 1H and 2F molecules which result in different potential barrier …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Hydrogen is a clean fuel that can potentially completely decarbonize the energy supply chain and mitigate global warming. Hydrogen – a highly volatile gas – however, needs to be separated from CO2 during H2 production, and also from cushion gas in H2 geo-storage projects; in addition, large-scale H2 storage is a key obstacle. We thus tested and chemically upgraded common sub-bituminous coal as a material for H2-CO2 separation and H2 storage. The coal adsorbed significant amounts of H2 and CO2 and demonstrated an excellent H2-CO2 separation efficiency if chemically modified. The work presented here thus provides fundamental data required for …

Recovering Relativistic Effects In Electronic Structure Calculations Of F-Element Single Molecule Magnets, Nathan Roy Loutsch
Dissertations and Theses
There has been a great interest in developing new information technologies. Single molecule magnets (SMMs) are emerging as materials for high density data storage, qubits, and molecular spintronics. SMMs containing lanthanide or actinide centers are of interest due to their potentially high magnetic anisotropy. This would enable the use of SMMs at higher temperatures. Accurately modelling the electronic structure of f-element complexes can be quite challenging. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a popular choice for optimizing geometry and studying the electronic structure due to its relatively low cost. In certain cases, more accuracy is desired or necessary to predict experimental …
