Protic ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized through a stoichiometric neutralization reaction between 2,2$' $-(ethylenedioxy)-bis(ethylamine) { Edbea} and various acids (formic, acetic, boric, decanoic, and gentisic acid). The PILs were characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, $^{1}$H and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. All the PILs except PIL3 were liquid at room temperature. The viscosity of the PILs (PIL1, 2, 4, 5) was measured using a cone-and-plate viscometer at ambient temperature. Quantum chemical calculations were used to explain the cation/anion ratio in the PILs. Reaction energies in the gas phase calculated at M062X/6-311$+$G(d,p) level were used to determine the cation/anion ratio. …

Curcuminoids, reported to have important biological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-Alzheimer, and antidiabetic properties, comprise curcumin (CRM; 1,7-bis [4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and its derivatives demethoxycurcumin (DMC; (E,6E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxy-cyclohexyl)-7-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC; 1,7-bis[4-hydroxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione). Their electrochemical oxidations are thoroughly explored by applying cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. The dependence of current intensities and potentials on pH, concentration, scan rate, and nature of the buffer was investigated. The outcome is supported by density functional theory computations indicating the transfer of 4-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, 6-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, and 8-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$ couples involved in the oxidation mechanisms of CRM, DMC, and BDMC, respectively, leading to the formation of the same oxidized product.

2-Aminothiazole derivatives bear three nucleophilic centers, i.e. endocyclic N, exocyclic NH$_{2}$, and S atom in the ring system. In addition to these centers there are $\pi$-electrons in the ring system which can also expectedly be involved in some sort of coordination. To the best of our knowledge the solid state coordination chemistry of such ligands has not been fully presented in the literature. These ligands (2-amino-4-methylthiazole and 2-amino-5-methylthiazole) were coupled with CoCl$_{2}$ under aerobic conditions to form tetrahedral complexes, bis(2-amino-4-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (1) and bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (2). Reaction of 2-amino-5-methylthiazole with AgNO$_{3}$ led to an expected two-coordinated, bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)silver(I) nitrate (3) as crystalline material. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present work, the compositions of the 27 triacylglycerols (TAGs) as well as fatty acid composition of Chilopsis linearis seed oil were determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with diode array and mass spectrometric detections. It was shown that the main conjugated acid in the seed oil is a catalpic acid, (9E,11E,13Z)-octadeca-9,11,13-trienoic acid, while two unusual fatty acids have the parameters satisfying the literature data for (10E,12E)-octadeca-10,12-dienoic and (9E,12E)-octadeca-9,12-dienoic acids. For the two conjugated acid substituents the isosbestic point (at 234 nm) was found and was used to calculate the ratios of TAGs with different chromophores in the …

Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are established sensitive materials for chemical gas sensors due to their superb sensing characteristics and the achievable manifold in their analyte interaction properties. Their sorption properties are determined by the metal ion center and substituents attached to the periphery of the ring system. Similarly, vic-dioximes can be modified in their sorption properties and employed as sensitive materials. In this work, a nickel Pc and various vic-dioximes functionalized with the same hexafluoroisopropanol moiety are assessed and compared in their gas-sensing properties using the quartz crystal microbalance for the first time. This specific substituent is selected for its hydrogen bond …

Synthesis Of Tetrakis Bromine Terminated Phthalocyanine And Its Methyl Methacrylate Polymers Via Atr, Tuba Çakir Çanak, Damla Yeşi̇ldağ, Ilgin Nar, Esi̇n Hamuryudan, İbrahi̇m Ersi̇n Serhatli
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A phthalocyanine (Pc) initiator, tetrakis(2-bromopropyloxyester)ethylthiophthalocyaninatozinc(II) (ZnPc-Br), was prepared and successfully applied to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) for the first time. Bromine end groups of the synthesized Pc took part in the initiation of the MMA chain growth. Polymerization was demonstrated by monomodal molecular weight distribution of the synthesized polymers and their increasing molecular weight behavior with reaction time. UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, and transmittance properties of the polymers were also examined. The results indicate that the ZnPc-Br-based initiator is potentially applicable in ATRP applied to MMA in order to obtain and develop functional acrylic materials.

Novel "Turn Off-On" Sensors For Detection Of Dna-Acrylamide Interaction Using Zns Quantum Dots As A Phosphorescent Probe, Hayri̇ye Eda Şatana Kara
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A novel "turn off-on" sensor for detection of interaction between DNA and acrylamide (ACR) was developed. In this method, L-cysteine capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were used as room temperature phosphorescent probes. In the ``turn-off'' mode, ACR was absorbed onto the surface of QDs via electrostatic interaction, which caused a quenching effect of room-temperature phosphorescence signal by photoinduced electron-transfer mechanism. ACR was removed from the QDs' surface with the addition of DNA. Thus, the phosphorescence emission of QDs was recovered and the system was turned to the ``turn-on'' mode. The quenching mechanism of QDs by ACR was collisional (dynamic) …

Health beneficial effect of pomegranate is mainly due to its confirmed high antioxidant capacity and polyphenolic content. In recent years, experimental and clinical studies have shown that pomegranate intake lowers blood pressure. Potassium and other minerals such as calcium and magnesium may be responsible for this property. In this study, a rapid, economic, reliable, and applicable capillary electrophoresis method was proposed with contactless conductivity detection for the quantitative determination of six cations in different pomegranate juices. The correlation between these cation contents of eight different pomegranate juices was evaluated by using one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple-range test. The optimum buffer …
Pore Length- And Ion Concentration-Dependent Ionic Current In Cylindrical Nanopores: An Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Study, Nazar İleri̇ Ercan
Pore Length- And Ion Concentration-Dependent Ionic Current In Cylindrical Nanopores: An Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Study, Nazar İleri̇ Ercan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The sensing of individual molecules as they pass through nanopores under an external field is a popular research field. The approach is simply based on the detectable temporary blockades in the ionic current as the molecules pass through the nanopores. These signatures of the current have been shown to be a function of nanoparticle and nanopore size and geometry as well as the external electric field. However, models developed in this context fail to predict the experimentally observed behavior in technologically important shorter nanopores. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamics simulation results from colloidal nanoparticle translocation through mid-to-low aspect ratio …

Synthesis, Kinetic Study, And Reaction Mechanism: Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions Of Butyl Methyl Chlorophosphate With Substituted Anilines And Deuterated Substituted Anilines In Acetonitrile, Hasi Rani Barai, Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Sang Woo Joo
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This study demonstrated the kinetics of nucleophilic substitution reactions of butyl methyl chlorophosphate (2) with X-anilines (XC$_{6}$H$_{4}$NH$_{2})$ and deuterated X-anilines (XC$_{6}$H$_{4}$ND$_{2})$ in MeCN at 55.0 \textpm\ 0.1 \textdegree C together with the general optimized method for the synthesis of 2 under mild conditions. Different spectroscopic characterizations revealed the formation of 2 with high purity. The free energy relationship with the substituents X in the anilines exhibited biphasic concavity upwards with a break point at X $=$ H, which induced large negative $\rho_{X}$ and small positive $\beta_{X}$ values. The deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs) were secondary inverse ($k_{H}$/$k_{D}$ \textless\ 1: 0.702--0.918) …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of The Antimycobacterial Activity Of 3-Mercapto-1,2,4-Triazole--Pyrrole Hybrids, Gheorghe Roman, Andra-Cristina Bostanaru, Valentin Nastasa, Mihai Mares
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A series of 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole--pyrrole hybrids was designed as antimycobacterial agents by employing 5-(4-(1$H$-pyrrol-1-yl)phenyl)-4$H$-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol as the scaffold onto which several types of moieties were introduced in the triazole ring at N-4 and N-2 and as substituents of the mercapto function. The aforementioned moieties are an allyl or a phenyl moiety at N-4; an aminomethyl group at N-2; or methyl, substituted benzyl, ethoxycarbonylmethyl, or substituted phenacyl at sulfur. Investigation of the compounds in the resulting library as growth inhibitors of Mycobacterium smegmatis showed that their minimum inhibitory concentration was higher than 64 mg/L.

Synthesis And Antitumor Activities Of 2-(Piperidin-4-Yl)-Thiazole-4-Carboxamides Analogues Of Tubulysins, Xiangfu Peng, Mingsha Shao, Shuchao Ma, Lei Yao
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
}Tubulysins are a family of natural products that exhibit potent antitumor activities, which have attracted much attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists. Previous attempts to aromatize the Tuv part of tubulysin analogues led to a loss in antitumor activity, which suggested that the Ile and Tuv fragments of these analogues were adopting different conformations than the natural products. In this study, a series of 2-(piperidin-4-yl)-thiazole-4-carboxamides have been prepared to investigate whether an intramolecular H-bond between key NH and OH groups is responsible for the conformational control. The antitumor activities of these analogues have been screened using MDA-MB-231-breast, Siha-cervical, MCF7-breast, and …

A Microwave-Assisted Highly Stereoselective One-Pot Wittig Reaction Under Solvent-Free Conditions, Kalyani Rajkumari, Bittu Lama, Lalthazuala Rokhum
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
We report a novel microwave-assisted two-step, one-pot protocol for the synthesis of olefins (alkenes) via Wittig reaction. The reaction was carried out under solvent-free conditions using basic alumina both as a heterogeneous catalyst and a solid support. Varieties of aromatic aldehydes were converted into their corresponding olefins within 30-50 min with good to excellent yields. An excellent predominance of E-isomers over Z-isomers (up to 100% E-selectivity) for all the olefin products was observed. This showed the attractive stereocontrol of our reported protocol. In addition, owing to the solid-state nature of the reactions, our procedure prevented the need for tedious aqueous …

In this study, natural clinoptilolite was modified by saponin and Brij 35 surfactants to remove diethylstilbestrol (DES) from wastewater in batch and continuous systems. The optimum pH, amount of adsorbent, contact time, and temperature were 11, 10 g/L, 12 h, and 35 $^{\circ}$C, respectively, for the process. The equilibrium data agreed well with the Langmuir isotherm for natural clinoptilolite (NC), natural clinoptilolite modified by Brij 35 (NC-Brij), and natural clinoptilolite modified by saponin surfactants (NC-saponin) compared to other isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities resulting from the Langmuir isotherm for NC, NC-Brij, and NC-saponin were 8.012, 23.64, and 39.525 mg/g, respectively. …

Dextran esters of different amino acids (glycine, $\beta $-alanine, L-ornithine, L-lysine) are investigated regarding their pK$_{a}$ values by potentiometric titration. The pK$_{a}$ values of the dextran derivatives are generally dependent on the position of the amino group in relation to the ester group, i.e. the nearer they are located in the molecule, the lower the resulting pK$_{a}$ values are, L-ornithine ester being the exception. An influence of the polymer backbone is ruled out. Stability against hydrolysis at different pH values and over longer periods at constant pH value is measured by potentiometric and polyelectrolyte titration. The $\beta $-alanine ester shows …

Parameterization, Kinetics, And Adsorption Isotherm Of Electrocoagulation Process Of Bromothymol Blue In Aqueous Medium Using Aluminum Electrodes, Okon Abakedi, Victor Mkpenie, John Okafor
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The removal of bromothymol blue (BTB) from aqueous solution was studied by electrocoagulation (EC) technique using aluminum electrodes. The various experimental conditions known to influence the EC process were parameterized, including the effects of temperature, concentration, current density, pH, and treatment time. The results obtained have shown that optimum removal efficiency of 99.9% was realized at a current density of 20 mA/cm$^{2}$ and pH of 4.7. The adsorption process showed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model as the best fit to the EC data. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms supported the adsorption of BTB on aluminum hydroxide being the in situ generated …

In this study, the synthesis of a novel 1,2-dinaphthyl ethanediol substituted phthalonitrile (2) together with tetra-substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanine (Pc) (3) and cobalt(II) Pc (4) bearing 1,2-dinaphthyl ethanediol at peripheral positions was described. The aggregation behaviors of metallophthalocyanines 3and 4 in solution were investigated by carrying out Beer-Lambert experiments at different concentrations. In addition, the catalytic activity of new cobalt(II) Pc 4 was investigated for benzyl alcohol oxidation. Benzyl alcohol was converted to benzaldehyde using cobalt(II) Pc 4 as a catalyst by a conversion of 99% with selectivity of 100% at room temperature in 1 h. Several spectroscopic techniques such as …

We examined metaproteome profiles from two Arctic microbiomes during 10-day shipboard incubations to directly track early functional and taxonomic responses to a simulated algal bloom and an oligotrophic control. Using a novel peptide-based enrichment analysis, significant changes (p-value < 0.01) in biological and molecular functions associated with carbon and nitrogen recycling were observed. Within the first day under both organic matter conditions, Bering Strait surface microbiomes increased protein synthesis, carbohydrate degradation, and cellular redox processes while decreasing C1 metabolism. Taxonomic assignments revealed that the core microbiome collectively responded to algal substrates by assimilating carbon before select taxa utilize and metabolize nitrogen intracellularly. Incubations of Chukchi Sea bottom water microbiomes showed similar, but delayed functional responses to identical treatments. Although 24 functional terms were shared between experimental treatments, the timing, and degree of the remaining responses were highly variable, showing that organic matter perturbation directs community functionality prior to alterations to the taxonomic distribution at the microbiome class level. The dynamic responses of these two oceanic microbial communities have important implications for timing and magnitude of responses to organic perturbations within the Arctic Ocean and how community-level functions may forecast biogeochemical gradients in oceans.
