Georg Cantor And The Battle For Transfinite Set Theory, Joseph Dauben Jun 1993

Georg Cantor And The Battle For Transfinite Set Theory, Joseph Dauben

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1993

Georg Cantor is well known as the founder of transfinite set theory. Equally celebrated, however, are the obstacles he faced in trying to win acceptance for his seemingly unorthodox views, his acrimonious differences with Leopold Kronecker and his unfortunate but progressively debilitating nervous breakdowns that some authors have linked directly to his many problems with set theory. Above all, Cantor's justification of set theory was all the more urgent because of Kronecker's critical denunciation of Cantor's mathematics. In tracing the evolution of Cantorian set theory, it is necessary to examine the opposition it met, and evaluate the technical, philosophical, psychological, …

Time-Discretization Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Yosi Shibberu Jun 1993

Time-Discretization Of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, Yosi Shibberu

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Difference equations for Hamiltonian systems are derived from a discrete variational principle. The difference equations completely determine piecewise-linear, continuous trajectories which exactly conserve the Hamiltonian function at the midpoints of each linear segment. A generating function exists for transformations between the vertices of the trajectories. Existence and uniqueness results are present as well as simulation results for a simple pendulum and an inverse square law system.

Radome Depolarization Effects On Monopulse Receiver Tracking Performance, Michael A. Temple Jun 1993

Radome Depolarization Effects On Monopulse Receiver Tracking Performance, Michael A. Temple

Theses and Dissertations

Boresight Error (BSE), defined as the angular deviation between the true position and the apparent position of a target as indicated by a radar, is an important figure of merit for a tracking radar. A significant contributor to system BSE is the protective radome. This research effort employed a GO technique to investigate the effects of a radome on BSE, expanding previous ray- trace receive techniques to include: (1) a uniquely defined/developed mathematical description for each surface within arbitrary multi-layer tapered radomes, (2) an 'ideal' taper function concept for obtaining optimum BSE prediction performance, (3) a generalized technique for calculating …

Distances Associated With Subgraphs And Subdigraphs, Steven John Winters Jun 1993

Distances Associated With Subgraphs And Subdigraphs, Steven John Winters

Dissertations

The defining properties of several important subgraphs and subdigraphs rely on the concept of distance in graphs and digraphs. In this dissertation, we investigate many of these subgraphs and subdigraphs.

In Chapter I, we present some preliminary definitions and examples. In addition, many known results are recalled. We then introduce several new induced subgraphs and subdigraphs.

In Chapter n, we investigate the general structure of the center and periphery of a graph. We introduce two new induced subgraphs of the center along with a new induced subgraph of the periphery of a graph in order to study these structures.

Bayesian Methods In Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery, Huey-Chung Teng May 1993

Bayesian Methods In Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery, Huey-Chung Teng

Theses

Many strides have been made in the last decade to improve the accuracy of preoperative risk estimation, particular for cardiovascular surgery. It is our goal to estimate the preoperative risk associated with cardiac bypass surgery for patients in different risk categories. These risk categories are determined by the Parsonett model.

The Parsonett model assigns a risk value to a range of risk factors consisting of patient attributes and disease parameters. Logistic modeling is applied to generate a comprehensive risk function. The database being utilized contains over 3,000 patients who have had cardiovascular surgery within the last 5 years.

Tracking Plasma Lactate Concentration In Vivo With A Catheter-Tip L-Lactate Sensor, Brett T. Weinzapfel, Mark D. Ball, Lee R. Waite, Nacer E. Abrouk, Shun P. Lim Mar 1993

Tracking Plasma Lactate Concentration In Vivo With A Catheter-Tip L-Lactate Sensor, Brett T. Weinzapfel, Mark D. Ball, Lee R. Waite, Nacer E. Abrouk, Shun P. Lim

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

To circumvent the problems of repeated blood sampling for in vitro analysis, a catheter-tip L-lactate sensor has been developed. The sensor was tested in anesthetized pigs (n=6). The sensor in vivo tracked the lactate concentration non-linearly, seeming to obey Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Calibration time was short, typically 1.5 min per lactate standard. Furthermore, time drift was small, typically -1.3% to -3.3% per hour of in vivo use.

A Fuzzy Logic Optimal Control Law Solution To The Cmmca Tracking Problem, Randy E. Nelson Mar 1993

A Fuzzy Logic Optimal Control Law Solution To The Cmmca Tracking Problem, Randy E. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force uses the C-18 Cruise Missile Mission Control Aircraft (CMMCA) to radar track cruise missiles (CM) during test flights. Because of the complexity of the CM flight profiles, maintaining radar coverage at all times is very difficult. This thesis attempted to apply optimal control theory to construct a simulation providing 100% radar coverage. The simulation was divided into ten second intervals, and fuzzy logic was used at the start of each interval to determine the set point, i.e., that point in space where the CMMCA should be in ten seconds. The set point calculation's fuzzy logic balanced CMMCA …

Optimal Silo Attack Plan For The Red Integrated Strategic Offensive Plan (Risop), Richard C. Pace Mar 1993

Optimal Silo Attack Plan For The Red Integrated Strategic Offensive Plan (Risop), Richard C. Pace

Theses and Dissertations

The Joint Staff Directorate for Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment (J-8) sought a procedure which could be used to generate an optimal missile allocation for the silo attack portion of the Red Integrated Strategic Offensive Plan (RISOP). Their current solution procedure is a manual heuristic which is time-consuming and is not guaranteed to lead to an optimal solution. J- 8 defines an optimal solution as a feasible solution which minimizes both the flight time of the missile that impacts first and the duration of the attack. J- 8 defined several input rules which limit how missiles may be allocated. A …

An Analysis Of The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Robert J. Bergevin Mar 1993

An Analysis Of The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Robert J. Bergevin

Theses and Dissertations

The Generalized Lambda Distribution (GLD) is a four parameter function that is capable of mimicking the behavior of a wide range of probability density functions (pdfs). Unfortunately, the GLD presently cannot model every possible type of pdf. Since the reasons for this limitation are unknown, this thesis examines several potential problems in an attempt to expand the range of distributions the GLD can mimic. We first present a discussion of the behavior of the algorithm that is used to search for the appropriate GLD parameter values. In particular, we examine the effect of using an unconstrained search to find the …

Modeling And Analysis For Laser Beam Induced Current Images In Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Stavros Busenberg, Kazufumi Ito Feb 1993

Modeling And Analysis For Laser Beam Induced Current Images In Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Stavros Busenberg, Kazufumi Ito

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is developed for the new nondestructive optical technique called laser-beam-induced currents (LBIC), which can be used to detect electrically active regions and defects in semiconductors. The wellposedness of the model equations is shown, and an approximate model that simplifies the numerical implementation of the identification problem is obtained. Some numerical results are presented to show that the approximate model preserves the significant features that the LBIC technique has been experimentally shown to possess.

The Full Group Of A Countable Measurable Equivalence Relation, Richard Mercer Feb 1993

The Full Group Of A Countable Measurable Equivalence Relation, Richard Mercer

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We study the group of all ''R-automorphisms'' of a countable equivalence relation R on a standard Borel space, special Borel automorphisms whose graphs lie in R. We show that such a group always contains periodic maps of each order sufficient to generate R. A construction based on these periodic maps leads to totally nonperiodic R-automorphisms all of whose powers have disjoint graphs. The presence of a large number of periodic maps allows us to present a version of the Rohlin Lemma for R-automorphisms. Finally we show that this group always contains copies of free …

The Flow Approach To Swept Volume, Haitao Jiang Jan 1993

The Flow Approach To Swept Volume, Haitao Jiang

Theses

In this thesis, a method for representing swept volume based on the sweep differential equation and sweep vector field flow is developed. This method can be used to determine the boundary representation of a swept volume generated by any polygonal object undergoing a general smooth 2-D sweep. For any given sweep and object, a. set of candidate boundary points is computed using a selection criterion based on vector field behavior. The set of candidate boundary points is then trimmed in order to obtain the true boundary of the swept volume. This trimming procedure is based on some simple topological principles …

On Infinite Delay Integral Equations Having Nonlinear Perturbations, Muhammad Islam Jan 1993

On Infinite Delay Integral Equations Having Nonlinear Perturbations, Muhammad Islam

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The existence of bounded solutions and periodic solutions is studied for a system of infinite delay integral equations having nonlinear perturbations. An equivalent system of equations is obtained in terms of the resolvent kernel. Then the existence results are shown for the equivalent equations. Contraction principle, Schauder’s fixed point theorem, and monotone method are used in the study.

Optimal Blackjack Strategy With "Lucky Bucks", Arthur T. Benjamin, Eric Huggins '91 Jan 1993

Optimal Blackjack Strategy With "Lucky Bucks", Arthur T. Benjamin, Eric Huggins '91

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In the casino game blackjack or "21," mathematically determined best plays have been calculated by various mathematicians and gambling experts. These optimal playing strategies all assume that the casino pays even money on bets (excluding when the player has a "blackjack"). However, many casinos offer the player "lucky bucks" that pay the player either 3-to-2 or 2-to-1. In the usual game, the player's expected loss is under 1¢ per dollar bet. in this paper, we derive optimal strategies under luck-buck conditions, giving the player an expected gain of 26¢ or 55¢ per dollar bet.

A Bifurcation Theorem And Applications, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio Jan 1993

A Bifurcation Theorem And Applications, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper we give a sufficient condition on the nonlinear operator N for a point (λ, u) to be a local bifurcation point of equations of the form u + λL-1(N(u)) = 0, where L is a linear operator in a real Hilbert space, L has compact inverse, and λ ∈ R is a parameter. Our result does not depend on the variational structure of the equation or the multiplicity of the eigenvalue of the linear operator L. Applications are made to systems of differential equations and to the existence of periodic solutions of nonlinear second order …

Optimal Control And Differential Games With Measures, E. N. Barron, R. Jensen, J. L. Menaldi Jan 1993

Optimal Control And Differential Games With Measures, E. N. Barron, R. Jensen, J. L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We consider control problems with trajectories which involve ordinary measureable control functions and controls which are measures. The payoff involves a running cost in time and a running cost against the control measures. In the optimal control problem we are trying to minimize this payoff with both controls. In the differential game problem we are trying to minimize the cost with the ordinary controls assuming that the measure controls are chosen to maximize the cost. We will characterize the value functions in both cases using viscosity solution theory by deriving the Bellman and Isaacs equations.

The Sharp Lipschitz-Constants For Feasible And Optimal-Solutions Of A Perturbed Linear Program, Wu Li

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to derive the sharp Lipschitz constants for the feasible solutions and optimal solutions of a linear program with respect to right-hand-side perturbations. The Lipschitz constants are given in terms of pseudoinverses of submatrices of the matrices involved and are proven to be sharp.

Integrated Computer Controlled Sensor Monitor, Tariq Hafeez Malik Jan 1993

Integrated Computer Controlled Sensor Monitor, Tariq Hafeez Malik

Theses : Honours

This research has developed an Integrated Computer Controlled Sensor Monitor (ICCSM) environment, to monitor and analyse alarm events associated with sensors, including an interface between a PC and a number of detectors. Such an environment will help the security industry analyse the factors causing false alarms at particular locations. The ICCSM environment monitors, and records, alarm data. Knowing exactly which sensor has been activated, and its location, is of paramount importance to the effective deployment of response forces and making the identification of causes of spurious alarms easier. The lCCSM environment is a combination of software and general purpose hardware, …

A Bulk Queueing System Under N-Policy With Bilevel Service Delay Discipline And Start-Up Time, David C.R. Muh Jan 1993

A Bulk Queueing System Under N-Policy With Bilevel Service Delay Discipline And Start-Up Time, David C.R. Muh

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The author studies the queueing process in a single-server, bulk arrival and batch service queueing system with a compound Poisson input, bilevel service delay discipline, start-up time, and a fixed accumulation level with control operating policy. It is assumed that when the queue length falls below a predefined level r (≥ 1), the system, with server capacity Λ, immediately stops service until the queue length reaches or exceeds the second predefined accumulation level N(≥ r). Two cases, with N ≦ R and N ≥ R, are studied. The author finds explicitly the probability generating function of the stationary distribution of …

Quasilinearization For Some Nonlocal Problems, Yunfeng Yin Jan 1993

Quasilinearization For Some Nonlocal Problems, Yunfeng Yin

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The method of generalized quasilinearization [4] is applied to study semilinear parabolic equation ut – Lu = f{t,x,u) with nonlocal boundary conditions u(t,x)=∫Ωϕ(x,y)u(t,y)dy in this paper. The convexity of f in u is relaxed by requiring f(t,x,u) Muz to be convex for some M > 0. The quadratic convergence of monotone sequence is obtained.

Uniqueness Criterion For Solution Of Abstract Nonlocal Cauchy Problem, Ludwik Byszewski

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The aim of the paper is to prove an uniqueness criterion for a solution of an abstract nonlocal Cauchy problem. A dissipative operator in the nonlocal problem and an arbitrary functional in the nonlocal condition are considered. The paper is a continuation of papers [l]-[3] and generalizes some results from [4].

Optimal Greedy Algorithms For Indifference Graphs, Peter J. Looges, Stephan Olariu Jan 1993

Optimal Greedy Algorithms For Indifference Graphs, Peter J. Looges, Stephan Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A fundamental problem in social sciences and management is understanding and predicting decisions made by individuals, various groups, or the society as a whole. In this context, one important concept is the notion of indifference. We characterize the class of indifference graphs, that is, graphs which arise in the process of quantifying indifference relations. In particular, we show that these graphs are characterized by the existence of a special ordering of their vertices. As it turns out, this ordering leads naturally to optimal greedy algorithms for a number of computational problems, including coloring, finding a shortest path between two vertices, …

Quasi-Brittle Graphs, A New Class Of Perfectly Orderable Graphs, Stephan Olariu Jan 1993

Quasi-Brittle Graphs, A New Class Of Perfectly Orderable Graphs, Stephan Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A graph G is quasi-brittle if every induced subgraph H of G contains a vertex which is incident to no edge extending symmetrically to a chordless path with three edges in either Hor its complement H¯. The quasi-brittle graphs turn out to be a natural generalization of the well-known class of brittle graphs. We propose to show that the quasi-brittle graphs are perfectly orderable in the sense of Chvátal: there exists a linear order < on their set of vertices such that no induced path with vertices a, b, c, d and edges ab, bc, cd has a < b and d < c.
