An Essay On Proof, Conviction, And Explanation: Multiple Representation Systems In Combinatorics, Elise Nicole Lockwood, John Caughman, Keith Weber

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is a longstanding conversation in the mathematics education literature about proofs that explain versus proofs that only convince. In this essay, we offer a characterization of explanatory proofs with three goals in mind. We first propose a theory of explanatory proofs for mathematics education in terms of representation systems. Then, we illustrate these ideas in terms of combinatorial proofs, focusing on binomial identities. Finally, we leverage our theory to explain audience-dependent and audience-invariant aspects of explanatory proof. Throughout, we use the context of combinatorics to emphasize points and to offer examples of proofs that can be explanatory or only …

A Mass Conserving Mixed Stress Formulation For Stokes Flow With Weakly Imposed Stress Symmetry, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Philip L. Lederer, Joachim Schoeberl Jan 2020

A Mass Conserving Mixed Stress Formulation For Stokes Flow With Weakly Imposed Stress Symmetry, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Philip L. Lederer, Joachim Schoeberl

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce a new discretization of a mixed formulation of the incompressible Stokes equations that includes symmetric viscous stresses. The method is built upon a mass conserving mixed formulation that we recently studied. The improvement in this work is a new method that directly approximates the viscous fluid stress $\sigma$, enforcing its symmetry weakly. The finite element space in which the stress is approximated consists of matrix-valued functions having continuous “normal-tangential” components across element interfaces. Stability is achieved by adding certain matrix bubbles that were introduced earlier in the literature on finite elements for linear elasticity. Like the earlier work, …

A Primer On Laplacian Dynamics In Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, R. Lyons Jan 2020

A Primer On Laplacian Dynamics In Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, R. Lyons

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We analyze the asymptotic behavior of general first order Laplacian processes on digraphs. The most important ones of these are diffusion and consensus with both continuous and discrete time. We treat diffusion and consensus as dual processes. This is the first complete exposition of this material in a single work.

Diffusion And Consensus On Weakly Connected Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, Ewan Kummel Oct 2019

Diffusion And Consensus On Weakly Connected Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, Ewan Kummel

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let G be a weakly connected directed graph with asymmetric graph Laplacian L. Consensus and diffusion are dual dynamical processes defined on G by x˙=−Lx for consensus and p˙=−pL for diffusion. We consider both these processes as well their discrete time analogues. We define a basis of row vectors {γ¯i}ki=1 of the left null-space of L and a basis of column vectors {γi}ki=1 of the right null-space of L in terms of the partition of G into strongly connected components. This allows for complete characterization of the asymptotic behavior of both diffusion and consensus --- discrete and continuous --- in …

Trefftz Finite Elements On Curvilinear Polygons, Akash Anand, Jeffrey S. Ovall, Samuel E. Reynolds, Steffen Weisser

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a Trefftz-type finite element method on meshes consisting of curvilinear polygons. Local basis functions are computed using integral equation techniques that allow for the efficient and accurate evaluation of quantities needed in the formation of local stiffness matrices. To define our local finite element spaces in the presence of curved edges, we must also properly define what it means for a function defined on a curved edge to be "polynomial" of a given degree on that edge. We consider two natural choices, before settling on the one that yields the inclusion of complete polynomial spaces in our local …

Spectral Discretization Errors In Filtered Subspace Iteration, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Luka Grubišić, Jeffrey S. Ovall Feb 2019

Spectral Discretization Errors In Filtered Subspace Iteration, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Luka Grubišić, Jeffrey S. Ovall

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider filtered subspace iteration for approximating a cluster of eigenvalues (and its associated eigenspace) of a (possibly unbounded) selfadjoint operator in a Hilbert space. The algorithm is motivated by a quadrature approximation of an operator-valued contour integral of the resolvent. Resolvents on infinite dimensional spaces are discretized in computable finite-dimensional spaces before the algorithm is applied. This study focuses on how such discretizations result in errors in the eigenspace approximations computed by the algorithm. The computed eigenspace is then used to obtain approximations of the eigenvalue cluster. Bounds for the Hausdorff distance between the computed and exact eigenvalue clusters …

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman Jan 2019

Stability Conditions For Coupled Oscillators In Linear Arrays, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we give necessary conditions for stability of flocks in R. We focus on linear arrays with decentralized agents, where each agent interacts with only a few its neighbors. We obtain explicit expressions for necessary conditions for asymptotic stability in the case that the systems consists of a periodic arrangement of two or three different types of agents, i.e. configurations as follows: ...2-1-2-1 or ...3-2-1-3-2-1. Previous literature indicated that the (necessary) condition for stability in the case of a single agent (...1-1-1) held that the first moment of certain coefficients governing the interactions between agents has to be …

Equators Have At Most Countable Many Singularities With Bounded Total Angle, Pilar Herreros, Mario Ponce, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For distinct points p and q in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold, one defines their mediatrix Lpq as the set of equidistant points to p and q. It is known that mediatrices have a cell decomposition consisting of a finite number of branch points connected by Lipschitz curves. In the case of a topological sphere, mediatrices are called equators and it can benoticed that there are no branching points, thus an equator is a topological circle with possibly many Lipschitz singularities. This paper establishes that mediatrices have the radial …

Computational Methods For Asynchronous Basins, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For a Boolean network we consider asynchronous updates and define the exclusive asynchronous basin of attraction for any steady state or cyclic attractor. An algorithm based on commutative algebra is presented to compute the exclusive basin. Finally its use for targeting desirable attractors by selective intervention on network nodes is illustrated with two examples, one cell signalling network and one sensor network measuring human mobility.

Transients In The Synchronization Of Asymmetrically Coupled Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, David K. Hammond, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider the transient behavior of a large linear array of coupled linear damped harmonic oscillators following perturbation of a single element. Our work is motivated by modeling the behavior of flocks of autonomous vehicles. We first state a number of conjectures that allow us to derive an explicit characterization of the transients, within a certain parameter regime Ω. As corollaries we show that minimizing the transients requires considering non-symmetric coupling, and that within Ω the computed linear growth in N of the transients is independent of (reasonable) boundary conditions.

Minimizing Differences Of Convex Functions With Applications To Facility Location And Clustering, Mau Nam Nguyen, R. Blake Rector, Daniel J. Giles

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we develop algorithms to solve generalized Fermat-Torricelli problems with both positive and negative weights and multifacility location problems involving distances generated by Minkowski gauges. We also introduce a new model of clustering based on squared distances to convex sets. Using the Nesterov smoothing technique and an algorithm for minimizing differences of convex functions called the DCA introduced by Tao and An, we develop effective algorithms for solving these problems. We demonstrate the algorithms with a variety of numerical examples.

It is important to characterize the temporal trajectories of disease-related biomarkers in order to monitor progression and identify potential points of intervention. These are especially important for neurodegenerative diseases, as therapeutic intervention is most likely to be effective in the preclinical disease stages prior to significant neuronal damage. Neuroimaging allows for the measurement of structural, functional, and metabolic integrity of the brain at the level of voxels, whose volumes are on the order of mm3. These voxelwise measurements provide a rich collection of disease indicators. Longitudinal neuroimaging studies enable the analysis of changes in these voxelwise measures. However, …

Full State Revivals In Linearly Coupled Chains With Commensurate Eigenspectra, J. J. P. Veerman, Jovan Petrovic Jan 2016

Full State Revivals In Linearly Coupled Chains With Commensurate Eigenspectra, J. J. P. Veerman, Jovan Petrovic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coherent state transfer is an important requirement in the construction of quantum computer hardware. The state transfer can be realized by linear next-neighbour-coupled finite chains. Starting from the commensurability of chain eigenvalues as the general condition of periodic dynamics, we find chains that support full periodic state revivals. For short chains, exact solutions are found analytically by solving the inverse eigenvalue problem to obtain the coupling coefficients between chain elements. We apply the solutions to design optical waveguide arrays and perform numerical simulations of light propagation thorough realistic waveguide structures. Applications of the presented method to the realization of a …

Signal Velocity In Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, David K. Hammond, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2016

Signal Velocity In Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, David K. Hammond, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate a system of coupled oscillators on the circle, which arises from a simple model for behavior of large numbers of autonomous vehicles. The model considers asymmetric, linear, decentralized dynamics, where the acceleration of each vehicle depends on the relative positions and velocities between itself and a set of local neighbors. We first derive necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability, then derive expressions for the phase velocity of propagation of disturbances in velocity through this system. We show that the high frequencies exhibit damping, which implies existence of well-defined signal velocities c+>0 and c−f(x−c+t) in the direction …

Geometric Approach To Convex Subdifferential Calculus, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam Oct 2015

Geometric Approach To Convex Subdifferential Calculus, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we develop a geometric approach to convex subdifferential calculus in finite dimensions with employing some ideas of modern variational analysis. This approach allows us to obtain natural and rather easy proofs of basic results of convex subdifferential calculus in full generality and also derive new results of convex analysis concerning optimal value/marginal functions, normals to inverse images of sets under set-valued mappings, calculus rules for coderivatives of single-valued and set-valued mappings, and calculating coderivatives of solution maps to parameterized generalized equations governed by set-valued mappings with convex graphs.

Transients Of Platoons With Asymmetric And Different Laplacians, Ivo Herman, Dan Martinec, J. J. P. Veerman Sep 2015

Transients Of Platoons With Asymmetric And Different Laplacians, Ivo Herman, Dan Martinec, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider an asymmetric control of platoons of identical vehicles with nearest-neighbor interaction. Recent results show that if the vehicle uses different asymmetries for position and velocity errors, the platoon has a short transient and low overshoots. In this paper we investigate the properties of vehicles with friction. To achieve consensus, an integral part is added to the controller, making the vehicle a third-order system. We show that the parameters can be chosen so that the platoon behaves as a wave equation with different wave velocities. Simulations suggest that our system has a better performance than other nearest-neighbor scenarios. Moreover, …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We develop and analyze strategies to couple the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method with optimal test functions to (i) least-squares boundary elements and (ii) various variants of standard Galerkin boundary elements. An essential feature of our method is that, despite the use of boundary integral equations, optimal test functions have to be computed only locally. We apply our findings to a standard transmission problem in full space and present numerical experiments to validate our theory.

A remarkable example of a nonempty closed convex set in the Euclidean plane for which the directional derivative of the metric projection mapping fails to exist was constructed by A. Shapiro. In this paper, we revisit and modify that construction to obtain a convex set with smooth boundary which possesses the same property.

A Tent Pitching Scheme Motivated By Friedrichs Theory, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Peter Monk, Paulina Sepulveda

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Certain Friedrichs systems can be posed on Hilbert spaces normed with a graph norm. Functions in such spaces arising from advective problems are found to have traces with a weak continuity property at points where the inflow and outflow boundaries meet. Motivated by this continuity property, an explicit space-time finite element scheme of the tent pitching type, with spaces that conform to the continuity property, is designed. Numerical results for a model one-dimensional wave propagation problem are presented.

Dynamics Of Locally Coupled Oscillators With Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interaction, J. Herbrych, A. G. Chazirakis, N. Christakis, J. J. P. Veerman Jun 2015

Dynamics Of Locally Coupled Oscillators With Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interaction, J. Herbrych, A. G. Chazirakis, N. Christakis, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A theoretical description of decentralized dynamics within linearly coupled, one-dimensional oscillators (agents) with up to next-nearest-neighbor interaction is given. Conditions for stability of such system are presented. Our results indicate that the stable systems have response that grow at least linearly in the system size. We give criteria when this is the case. The dynamics of these systems can be described with traveling waves with strong damping in the high frequencies. Depending on the system parameters, two types of solutions have been found: damped oscillations and reflectionless waves. The latter is a novel result and a feature of systems with …

Monomials And Basin Cylinders For Network Dynamics, Daniel Austin, Ian H. Dinwoodie Jan 2015

Monomials And Basin Cylinders For Network Dynamics, Daniel Austin, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe methods to identify cylinder sets inside a basin of attraction for Boolean dynamics of biological networks. Such sets are used for designing regulatory interventions that make the system evolve towards a chosen attractor, for example initiating apoptosis in a cancer cell. We describe two algebraic methods for identifying cylinders inside a basin of attraction, one based on the Groebner fan that finds monomials that define cylinders and the other on primary decomposition. Both methods are applied to current examples of gene networks.

Stability Of A Circular System With Multiple Asymmetric Laplacians, Ivo Herman, Dan Martinec, J. J. P. Veerman, Michael Sebek Jan 2015

Stability Of A Circular System With Multiple Asymmetric Laplacians, Ivo Herman, Dan Martinec, J. J. P. Veerman, Michael Sebek

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider an asymptotic stability of a circular system where the coupling Laplacians are different for each state used for synchronization. It is shown that there must be a symmetric coupling in the output state to guarantee the stability for agents with two integrators in the open loop. Systems with agents having three or more integrators cannot be stabilized by any coupling. In addition, recent works in analysis of a scaling in vehicular platoons relate the asymptotic stability of a circular system to a string stability. Therefore, as confirmed by simulations in the paper, our results have an application also …

Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2015

Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emerging optical and quantum computers require hardware capable of coherent transport of and operations on quantum states. Here, we investigate finite optical waveguide arrays with linear coupling as means of efficient and compact coherent state transfer. Coherent transfer with periodic state revivals is enabled by engineering coupling coefficients between neighbouring waveguides to yield commensurate eigenvalue spectrum. Particular cases of finite arrays have been actively studied to achieve the perfect state transfer by mirroring the input into the output state.

We explore a much wider scope of coherent propagation and revivals of both the state amplitude and phase. We analytically solve …

Nonsmooth Algorithms And Nesterov's Smoothing Technique For Generalized Fermat-Torricelli Problems, Nguyen Mau Nam, Nguyen Thai An, R. Blake Rector, Jie Sun Oct 2014

Nonsmooth Algorithms And Nesterov's Smoothing Technique For Generalized Fermat-Torricelli Problems, Nguyen Mau Nam, Nguyen Thai An, R. Blake Rector, Jie Sun

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present algorithms for solving a number of new models of facility location which generalize the classical Fermat--Torricelli problem. Our first approach involves using Nesterov's smoothing technique and the minimization majorization principle to build smooth approximations that are convenient for applying smooth optimization schemes. Another approach uses subgradient-type algorithms to cope directly with the nondifferentiability of the cost functions. Convergence results of the algorithms are proved and numerical tests are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Transients In The Synchronization Of Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this note is threefold. First we state a few conjectures that allow us to rigorously derive a theory which is asymptotic in N (the number of agents) that describes transients in large arrays of (identical) linear damped harmonic oscillators in R with completely decentralized nearest neighbor interaction. We then use the theory to establish that in a certain range of the parameters transients grow linearly in the number of agents (and faster outside that range). Finally, in the regime where this linear growth occurs we give the constant of proportionality as a function of the signal velocities …

A Posteriori Estimates Using Auxiliary Subspace Techniques, Harri Hakula, Michael Neilan, Jeffrey S. Ovall

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A posteriori error estimators based on auxiliary subspace techniques for second order elliptic problems in Rd (d ≥ 2) are considered. In this approach, the solution of a global problem is utilized as the error estimator. As the continuity and coercivity of the problem trivially leads to an efficiency bound, the main focus of this paper is to derive an analogous effectivity bound and to determine the computational complexity of the auxiliary approximation problem. With a carefully chosen auxiliary subspace, we prove that the error is bounded above by the error estimate up to oscillation terms. In addition, we show …

Regularity Of Mediatrices In Surfaces, Pilar Herreros, Mario Ponce, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2014

Regularity Of Mediatrices In Surfaces, Pilar Herreros, Mario Ponce, J. J. P.

This paper establishes additional geometric regularity properties of mediatrices. We show that mediatrices have the radial linearizability property, which implies that at each point they have a geometrically defined derivative in the branching directions. Also, we study the particular case of mediatrices on spheres, by showing that they are Lipschitz simple closed curves …
