Properties Of Eigenvalues Of The Fractal Laplacian, Eric Stachura, Andrew Chincea

We investigate the properties of the eigenvalues of the fractal Laplacian. We begin by defining the fractal Laplacian operator in one dimension and formulate the corresponding Dirichlet eigenvalue problem. Analytical solutions are obtained for specific fractal parameters, and computational results illustrate the structure of eigenvalues and their associated eigenfunctions. We extend our analysis to two dimensions using separation of variables. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how fractal geometry affects the spectral characteristics of differential operators.

This study examines the change in connotative language use before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. By analyzing news articles from several major US newspapers, we found that there is a statistically significant correlation between the sentiment of the text and the publication period. Specifically, we document a large, systematic, and statistically significant decline in the overall sentiment of articles published in major news outlets. While our results do not directly gauge the sentiment of the population, our findings have important implications regarding the social responsibility of journalists and media outlets especially in times of crisis.

Project-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogy which encourages students to be actively involved in their learning process through gaining information to solve real-world problems with projects. In areas of STEM education, PBL can supplement the traditional classroom lecture, where students have a predominantly passive role in the learning process. Through practical activities, interactive discussions, independent reflection and/or team cooperation, students achieve the desired learning outcomes.

Lissajous curves, named after Jules Antoine Lissajous (1822-1880) are generated by the parametric equations ��=��������(����) and ��=��������(����) in its simplistic form. Others have studied these curves and their applications like Nathaniel Bowditch in 1815, and they are often referred to as Bowditch curves as well. Lissajous curves are found in engineering, mathematics, graphic design, physics, and many other backgrounds. In this project entitled “Parametric Art” this project will focus on analyzing these types of equations and manipulating them to create art. The motivation of the project is to identify the legislators who voted frequently against their party in terms of their roll call votes using Office of Clerk U.S. House of Representatives Data Sets collected in 2018 and 2019. We construct a model to predict the parties of legislators based on their votes. The method we used is Decision Tree from Data Mining. Python was used to collect raw data from internet, SAS was used to clean data, and all other calculations and graphical presentations are performed using the R software.

Mathematical models are systems using mathematical concepts to explain various problems. Mathematical models examine realistic issues such as the different outcomes of wars and fictional problems such as the upcoming zombie apocalypse. The original predictor models of warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse is a fictional expansion upon mathematical models for infectious diseases. In this paper, we examined and compared the basic versions of these dynamic models by analyzing each model’s set of variables, assumptions, and objectives. Boolean Networks are being used to analyze models in biology, economics, social sciences, and many other areas. These models simplify the reality by assuming that each element in the network can take on only two possible values, such as ON and OFF. The node evolution is governed by its interaction with other nodes in its neighborhood, which is described mathematically by a Boolean function or rule. For simplicity reasons, many models assume that all nodes follow the same Boolean rule. However, real networks often use more than one Boolean rule and therefore are heterogeneous networks. Post-market surveillance is a collection of processes and activities used by product manufacturers and regulators, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to monitor the safety and effectiveness of medical devices once they are available for use “on the market”. These activities are designed to generate information to identify poorly performing devices and other safety problems, accurately characterize real-world device performance and clinical outcomes, and facilitate the development of new devices, or new uses for existing devices. The main purpose of this project is to build a mathematical model for traffic at a busy intersection. We use elements of Queueing Theory to build our model: the vehicles driving into the intersection are the “arrival process” and the stop light in the intersection is the “server.”
We collected traffic data on the number of vehicles arriving to the intersection, the duration of green and red lights, and the number of vehicles going through the intersection during a green light. We built a SAS macro code to simulate traffic based on parameters derived from the data.

During Spring 2009, Dr. Kessler created and published a comic book series that embedded math content into the story for 4th-6th grade students. The comics were well received in the classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary. Dr. Kessler contends that this approach to teaching and learning can be used in any content area, and is useful for engaging students who might not be as interested otherwise. In response to a problem posed by faculty at the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University, the speaker has developed an algorithm for providing an automated analysis of spectrum data for the purpose of determining the elemental composition of the item generating the data. A full, non-provisional patent application has been filed on the idea, and a full marketing campaign has started to license software implementing the algorithm. This presentation will give a brief explanation of the mathematics in use in the algorithm, and will give some examples of the software in action.

This is a prelude to a performance of the play "Arcadia" exclusively for the science and math majors of Lipscomb University. One of the main characters of the story is a mathematical genius, and has realized the power and limitations of iterations in generating mathematical models and structures, although she is living in the early 1800's. This talk gives an introduction to the ideas of chaos theory, fractals, and randomness.

At the previous Approximation Theory XII meeting, I discussed some preliminary work with the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University in using multiwavelets to provide an objective analysis of gamma-ray spectrum generated from fast neutron bombardment of objects, for the purpose of identifying the elemental composition of the object. The method discussed at the time worked moderately well with the limited amount of data provided, but subsequent use with data sets of different compounds and with different detectors brought to light serious flaws with its implementation.
