Heritability Of Cognition Subscales In The Cache County Memory Study Cohort And Methods For Estimating Heritability, Colette Kelly Childs
Heritability Of Cognition Subscales In The Cache County Memory Study Cohort And Methods For Estimating Heritability, Colette Kelly Childs
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The rapid improvement of genotyping technology holds the promise of better understanding the genetic causes of complex disease. While traits of interest often include the presence or absence of disease, there is growing interest in intermediate phenotypes (or so-called endophenotypes) that may yield more information about disease onset or course. In particular, changes over time with respect to an investigative ordinal measure often contain significant predictive power, and rate-of-change phenotypes are becoming important in their own right when studying genetic association. Initial steps in assessing the potential genetic determinants of a continuous trait often involve estimating the degree of the …
Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov
Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
In this contribution we describe the role of several two-component integrable systems in the classical problem of shallow water waves. The starting point in our derivation is the Euler equation for an incompressible fluid, the equation of mass conservation, the simplest bottom and surface conditions and the constant vorticity condition. The approximate model equations are generated by introduction of suitable scalings and by truncating asymptotic expansions of the quantities to appropriate order. The so obtained equations can be related to three different integrable systems: a two component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, the Zakharov-Ito system and the Kaup-Boussinesq system. The …
Multi-Objective Network Reliability Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Franciso Oswaldo Aguirre
Multi-Objective Network Reliability Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Franciso Oswaldo Aguirre
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This work presents a new multiple objective evolutionary algorithm to solve three well known network reliability allocation problems considering different conflicting objectives to be optimized simultaneously. The new algorithm is applied in the design of a telecommunication network that is formed for several stations or nodes interconnected by telecommunication links or paths. The problem presented in this work involves finding which links to activate in order to obtain connectivity in the nodes. The number of nodes that need to be connected depends of the case that is being evaluated. The three network reliability problems considered are: all-terminal, k-terminal, and two-terminal. …

The management and combination of uncertain, imprecise, fuzzy and even paradoxical or highly conflicting sources of information has always been, and still remains today, of primal importance for the development of reliable modern information systems involving artificial reasoning. In this introduction, we present a survey of our recent theory of plausible and paradoxical reasoning, known as Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT), developed for dealing with imprecise, uncertain and conflicting sources of information. We focus our presentation on the foundations of DSmT and on its most important rules of combination, rather than on browsing specific applications of DSmT available in literature. Several simple …

Investigation Of A Neutrosophic Group, A. Elrawy, Florentin Smarandache, Ayat A. Temraz
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
We use a neutrosophic set, instead of an intuitionistic fuzzy because the neutrosophic set is more general, and it allows for independent and partial independent components, while in an intuitionistic fuzzy set, all components are totally dependent. In this article, we present and demonstrate the concept of neutrosophic invariant subgroups. We delve into the exploration of this notion to establish and study the neutrosophic quotient group. Further, we give the concept of a neutrosophic normal subgroup as a novel concept.
Nonlinear Dynamics Of Infant Sitting Postural Control, Joan E. Deffeyes
Nonlinear Dynamics Of Infant Sitting Postural Control, Joan E. Deffeyes
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sitting is one of the first developmental milestones that an infant achieves. Thus measurements of sitting posture present an opportunity to assess sensorimotor development at a young age, in order to identify infants who might benefit from therapeutic intervention, and to monitor the efficacy of the intervention. Sitting postural sway data was collected using a force plate from infants with typical development, and from infants with delayed development, where the delay in development was due to cerebral palsy in most of the infants in the study. The center of pressure time series from the infant sitting was subjected to a …
A New Elasticity Element Made For Enforcing Weak Stress Symmetry, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
A New Elasticity Element Made For Enforcing Weak Stress Symmetry, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Johnny Guzmán
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce a new mixed method for linear elasticity. The novelty is a simplicial element for the approximate stress. For every positive integer k, the row-wise divergence of the element space spans the set of polynomials of total degree k. The degrees of freedom are suited to achieve continuity of the normal stresses. What makes the element distinctive is that its dimension is the smallest required for enforcing a weak symmetry condition on the approximate stress. This is achieved using certain "bubble matrices", which are special divergence-free matrix-valued polynomials. We prove that the approximation error is of order k + …

Coarser Connected Topologies And Non-Normality Points, Lynne Yengulalp
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We investigate two topics, coarser connected topologies and non-normality points. The motivating question in the first topic is:
Question 0.0.1. When does a space have a coarser connected topology with a nice topological property? We will discuss some results when the property is Hausdorff and prove that if X is a non-compact metric space that has weight at least c, then it has a coarser connected metrizable topology. The second topic is concerned with the following question:
Question 0.0.2. When is a point y ∈ β X\X a non-normality point of β X\X? We will discuss the question in the …
Biwave Maps Into Manifolds, Yuan-Jen Chiang
Biwave Maps Into Manifolds, Yuan-Jen Chiang
Mathematics Articles
We generalize wave maps to biwave maps. We prove that the composition of a biwave map and a totally geodesic map is a biwave map. We give examples of biwave nonwave maps. We show that if f is a biwave map into a Riemannian manifold under certain circumstance, then f is a wave map. We verify that if f is a stable biwave map into a Riemannian manifold with positive constant sectional curvature satisfying the conservation law, then f is a wave map. We finally obtain a theorem involving an unstable biwave map.

Unified Hybridization Of Discontinuous Galerkin, Mixed, And Continuous Galerkin Methods For Second Order Elliptic Problems, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Raytcho Lazarov
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce a unifying framework for hybridization of finite element methods for second order elliptic problems. The methods fitting in the framework are a general class of mixed-dual finite element methods including hybridized mixed, continu- ous Galerkin, non-conforming and a new, wide class of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods. The distinctive feature of the methods in this framework is that the only globally coupled degrees of freedom are those of an approximation of the solution defined only on the boundaries of the elements. Since the associated matrix is sparse, symmetric and positive definite, these methods can be efficiently implemented. Moreover, the …
The Derivation Of Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Stokes Flow, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan
The Derivation Of Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Stokes Flow, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, we introduce a new class of discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Stokes equations. The main feature of these methods is that they can be implemented in an efficient way through a hybridization procedure which reduces the globally coupled unknowns to certain approximations on the element boundaries. We present four ways of hybridizing the methods, which differ by the choice of the globally coupled unknowns. Classical methods for the Stokes equations can be thought of as limiting cases of these new methods.

We describe the global behavior of the dynamics of a particle bouncing down an inclined staircase. For small inclinations all orbits eventually stop (independent of the initial condition). For large enough inclinations all orbits end up accelerating indefinitely (also independent of the initial conditions). There is an interval of inclinations of positive length between these two. In that interval the behavior of an orbit depends on its initial condition. In addition to stopping and accelerating orbits, there are also orbits with speeds bounded away from both zero and infinity. A second hallmark of the dynamics is that the orbits going …
Statistical Inferences For Functions Of Parameters Of Several Pareto And Exponential Populations With Application In Data Traffic, Sumith Gunasekera
Statistical Inferences For Functions Of Parameters Of Several Pareto And Exponential Populations With Application In Data Traffic, Sumith Gunasekera
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation, we discuss the usability and applicability of three statistical inferential frameworks--namely, the Classical Method, which is sometimes referred to as the Conventional or the Frequentist Method, based on the approximate large sample approach, the Generalized Variable Method based on the exact generalized p -value approach, and the Bayesian Method based on prior densities--for solving existing problems in the area of parametric estimation. These inference procedures are discussed through Pareto and exponential distributions that are widely used to model positive random variables relevant to social, scientific, actuarial, insurance, finance, investments, banking, and many other types of observable phenomena. …

Managing Risk In Life Insurance With Your Genetic Information: The Issues, The Options, And The Speed Of Progress, Michelle Gogerty
Honors Program Theses
legislation is already in place to restrict the use of genetic information in the health insurance industry (Genetics and Public Policy Center 2008) and several states have similar laws restricting its use in the life insurance industry as well (National Conference of State legislatures 2008}. It is only a matter of time before national legislation applicable to life insurance is enacted on the matter and I expect it to come within the next five years. Unless both insurers and consumers actively protect their rights to privacy, equality, and profitability, the result of that legislation may be very harmful to one …
Phase Transitions In Materials With Thermal Memory: The Case Of Unequal Conductivities, John Murrough Golden
Phase Transitions In Materials With Thermal Memory: The Case Of Unequal Conductivities, John Murrough Golden
Articles
A model for thermally induced phase transitions in materials with thermal memory was recently proposed, where the equations determining heatflow were assumed to be the same in both phases. In this work, the model is generalized to the case of phase dependent heatflow relations. The temperature (or coldness) gradient is decomposed into two parts, each zero on one phase and equal to the temperature (or coldness) gradient on the other. However, they vary smoothly over the transition zone. These are treated as separate independent quantities in the derivation of field equations from thermodynamics. Heat flux is given by an integral …

Converging Flow Between Coaxial Cones, O. Hall, A. D. Gilbert, C. P. Hills

Fluid flow governed by the Navier-Stokes equation is considered in a domain bounded by two cones with the same axis. In the first, 'non-parallel' case, the two cones have the same apex and different angles θ = α and β in spherical polar coordinates (r, θ, φ). In the second, 'parallel' case, the two cones have the same opening angle α, parallel walls separated by a gap h and apices separated by a distance h/sinα. Flows are driven by a source Q at the origin, the apex of the lower cone in the parallel case. The Stokes solution for the …

Nonaxisymmetric Stokes Flow Between Concentric Cones, O. Hall, C. P. Hills, A. D. Gilbert
Articles
We study the fully three-dimensional Stokes flow within a geometry consisting of two infinite cones with coincident apices. The Stokes approximation is valid near the apex and we consider the dominant flow features as it is approached. The cones are assumed to be stationary and the flow to be driven by an arbitrary far-field disturbance. We express the flow quantities in terms of eigenfunction expansions and allow for the first time for nonaxisymmetric flow regimes through an azimuthal wave number. The eigenvalue problem is solved numerically for successive wave numbers. Both real and complex sequences of eigenvalues are found, their …
Generalised Fourier Transform And Perturbations To Soliton Equations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov
Generalised Fourier Transform And Perturbations To Soliton Equations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
A brief survey of the theory of soliton perturbations is presented. The focus is on the usefulness of the so-called Generalised Fourier Transform (GFT). This is a method that involves expansions over the complete basis of “squared solutions” of the spectral problem, associated to the soliton equation. The Inverse Scattering Transform for the corresponding hierarchy of soliton equations can be viewed as a GFT where the expansions of the solutions have generalised Fourier coefficients given by the scattering data. The GFT provides a natural setting for the analysis of small perturbations to an integrable equation: starting from a purely soliton …
Equations Of The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov
Equations Of The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
The squared eigenfunctions of the spectral problem associated with the CamassaHolm (CH) equation represent a complete basis of functions, which helps to describe the inverse scattering transform for the CH hierarchy as a generalized Fourier transform (GFT). All the fundamental properties of the CH equation, such as the integrals of motion, the description of the equations of the whole hierarchy, and their Hamiltonian structures, can be naturally expressed using the completeness relation and the recursion operator, whose eigenfunctions are the squared solutions. Using the GFT, we explicitly describe some members of the CH hierarchy, including integrable deformations for the CH …
Mathematical Aids Epidemic Model: Preferential Anti-Retroviral Therapy Distribution In Resource Constrained Countries, Nadia Abuelezam
Mathematical Aids Epidemic Model: Preferential Anti-Retroviral Therapy Distribution In Resource Constrained Countries, Nadia Abuelezam
HMC Senior Theses
HIV/AIDS is one of the largest health problems the world is currently facing. Even with anti-retroviral therapies (ART), many resource-constrained countries are unable to meet the treatment needs of their infected populations. ART-distribution methods need to be created that prevent the largest number of future HIV infections. We have developed a compartment model that tracks the spread of HIV in multiple two-sex populations over time in the presence of limited treatment. The model has been fit to represent the HIV epidemic in rural and urban areas in Uganda. With the model we examine the spread of HIV among urban and …
Interconnections Of Nonlinear Systems Driven By L₂-Itô Stochastic Processes, Luis A. Duffaut Espinosa
Interconnections Of Nonlinear Systems Driven By L₂-Itô Stochastic Processes, Luis A. Duffaut Espinosa
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Fliess operators have been an object of study in connection with nonlinear systems acting on deterministic inputs since the early 1970's. They describe a broad class of nonlinear input-output maps using a type of functional series expansion, but in most applications, a system's inputs have noise components. In such circumstances, new mathematical machinery is needed to properly describe the input-output map via the Chen-Fliess algebraic formalism. In this dissertation, a class of L2-Itô stochastic processes is introduced specifically for this purpose. Then, an extension of the Fliess operator theory is presented and sufficient conditions are given under which …
The Segal-Bargmann Transform On Inductive Limits Of Compact Symmetric Spaces, Keng Wiboonton
The Segal-Bargmann Transform On Inductive Limits Of Compact Symmetric Spaces, Keng Wiboonton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We construct the Segal-Bargmann transform on the direct limit of the Hilbert spaces $\{L^2(M_n)^{K_n}\}_n$ where $\{M_n = U_n/K_n\}_n$ is a propagating sequence of symmetric spaces of compact type with the assumption that $U_n$ is simply connected for each $n$. This map is obtained by taking the direct limit of the Segal-Bargmann tranforms on $L^2(M_n)^{K_n}, \ n = 1,2,...$. For each $n$, let $\widehat{U_n}$ be the set of equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of $U_n$ and let $\widehat{U_n/K_n} \subseteq \widehat{U_n}$ be the set of $K_n$-spherical representations. The definition of the propagation gives a nice property allowing us to embed $\widehat{U_n/K_n}$ …

Algorithms Related To Subgroups Of The Modular Group, Constantin Cristian Caranica
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Classifying subgroups of the modular group PSL_2{Z} is a fundamental problem with applications to modular forms, in addition to its group-theoretic interest. While a lot of research has been done on the congruence subgroups of PSL_2{Z}, very little is known about noncongruence subgroups. The purpose of this thesis is to find and characterize small-index noncongruence subgroups of the modular group PSL_2{Z}. We use the concept of Farey symbol to describe the subgroups of PSL_2{Z}. The first part contains results concerning the geometry of subgroups of PSL_2{Z}. The second part describes a graph-theoretical approach to finding all subgroups of a given …
The Structure Of 4-Separations In 4-Connected Matroids, Jeremy M. Aikin
The Structure Of 4-Separations In 4-Connected Matroids, Jeremy M. Aikin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Oxley, Semple and Whittle described a tree decomposition for a 3-connected matroid M that displays, up to a natural equivalence, all non-trivial 3-separations of M. Crossing 3-separations gave rise to fundamental structures known as flowers. In this dissertation, we define generalized flower structure called a k-flower, with no assumptions on the connectivity of M. We completely classify k-flowers in terms of the local connectivity between pairs of petals. Specializing to the case of 4-connected matroids, we give a new notion of equivalence of 4-separations that we show will be needed to describe a tree decomposition for 4-connected matroids. Finally, we …
Unavoidable Minors In Graphs And Matroids, Carolyn Barlow Chun
Unavoidable Minors In Graphs And Matroids, Carolyn Barlow Chun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
It is well known that every sufficiently large connected graph G has either a vertex of high degree or a long path. If we require G to be more highly connected, then we ensure the presence of more highly structured minors. In particular, for all positive integers k, every 2-connected graph G has a series minor isomorphic to a k-edge cycle or K_{2,k}. In 1993, Oxley, Oporowski, and Thomas extended this result to 3- and internally 4-connected graphs identifying all unavoidable series minors of these classes. Loosely speaking, a series minor allows for arbitrary edge deletions but only allows edges …

Positive Solutions For The (N, P) Boundary Value Problem, Bo Yang
Faculty Articles
We consider the (n, p) boundary value problem in this paper. Some new upper estimates to positive solutions for the problem are obtained. Existence and nonexistence results for positive solutions of the problem are obtained by using the Krasnosel'skii fixed point theorem. An example is included to illustrate the results.

On The Estimation Of Averages Over Infinite Intervals With An Application To Average Persistence In Population Models, Sean F. Ellermeyer
Faculty Articles
We establish a general result for estimating the upper average of a continuous and bounded function over an infinite interval. As an application, we show that a previously studied model of microbial growth in a chemostat with time–varying nutrient input admits solutions (populations) that exhibit weak persistence but not weak average persistence.
Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Fractional Brownian Motions, Liqun Fang
Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Fractional Brownian Motions, Liqun Fang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to study stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with a fractional Brownian motion noise. The second chapter will introduce the background results on fractional Brownian motions and some of their properties. The third chapter will focus on the Stokes operator and the semigroup generated by this operator. The Navier-Stokes equations and the evolution equation setup will be described in the next chapter. The main goal is to prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with a fractional Brownian motion noise under suitable conditions. The proof is given with full details for two …
White Noise Methods For Anticipating Stochastic Differential Equations, Julius Esunge
White Noise Methods For Anticipating Stochastic Differential Equations, Julius Esunge
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on linear stochastic differential equations of anticipating type. Owing to the lack of a theory of differentiation for random processes, the said differential equations are appropriately understood and studied as anticipating stochastic integral equations. The unfolding work considers equations in which anticipation arises either from the initial condition or the integrand. In this regard, the techniques of white noise analysis are applied to such equations. In particular, by using the Hitsuda-Skorokhod integral which nicely extends the It integral to anticipating integrands, we then apply the S-transform from white noise analysis to study this new equation.
