Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu Jan 2012

Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents the correspondences of the eccentric mathematics of cardinal and integral functions and centric mathematics, or ordinary mathematics. Centric functions will also be presented in the introductory section, because they are, although widely used in undulatory physics, little known. In centric mathematics, cardinal sine and cosine are dened as well as the integrals. Both circular and hyperbolic ones. In eccentric mathematics, all these central functions multiplies from one to innity, due to the innity of possible choices where to place a point. This point is called eccenter S(s;") which lies in the plane of unit circle UC(O;R = …

Rational Approximation On Compact Nowhere Dense Sets, Christopher Mattingly Jan 2012

Rational Approximation On Compact Nowhere Dense Sets, Christopher Mattingly

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

For a compact, nowhere dense set X in the complex plane, C, define Rp(X) as the closure of the rational functions with poles off X in Lp(X, dA). It is well known that for 1 ≤ p < 2, Rp(X) = Lp(X) . Although density may not be achieved for p > 2, there exists a set X so that Rp(X) = Lp(X) for p up to a given number greater than 2 but not after. Additionally, when p > 2 we shall establish that the support of the annihiliating and …

Analytic And Topological Combinatorics Of Partition Posets And Permutations, Jiyoon Jung Jan 2012

Analytic And Topological Combinatorics Of Partition Posets And Permutations, Jiyoon Jung

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation we first study partition posets and their topology. For each composition c we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition c. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module of a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by knapsack integer partitions. In the second half of this dissertation we study descent …

A Meshless Numerical Solution Of The Family Of Generalized Fifth-Order Korteweg-De Vries Equations, Syed Tauseef Mohyud-Din, Elham Negahdary, Muhammad Usman

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a numerical solution of a family of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations using a meshless method of lines. This method uses radial basis functions for spatial derivatives and Runge-Kutta method as a time integrator. This method exhibits high accuracy as seen from the comparison with the exact solutions.

Bounded Solutions Of Almost Linear Volterra Equations, Muhammad Islam, Youssef Raffoul Jan 2012

Bounded Solutions Of Almost Linear Volterra Equations, Muhammad Islam, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Fixed point theorem of Krasnosel’skii is used as the primary mathematical tool to study the boundedness of solutions of certain Volterra type equations. These equations are studied under a set of assumptions on the functions involved in the equations. The equations will be called almost linear when these assumptions hold.

Asymptotic Reliability Rheory Of K-Out-Of-N Systems, Nuria Torrado, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2012

Asymptotic Reliability Rheory Of K-Out-Of-N Systems, Nuria Torrado, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We formulate a theory that allows us to formulate a simple criterion that ensures that two k-out-of-n systems A and are not ordered. If the systems fail the criterion, it does not follow they are ordered. Thus the theory only serves to avoid some a priori useless comparisons: when neither A nor can be said to be better than the other. The power of the theory lies in its wide potential applicability: the assumptions involve very weak estimates on the asymptotic behavior (as t→0 and as t→∞) of the constituent survival probabilities. We include examples.

Integrable Models For Shallow Water With Energy Dependent Spectral Problems, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons Jan 2012

Integrable Models For Shallow Water With Energy Dependent Spectral Problems, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons

Articles

We study the inverse problem for the so-called operators with energy depending potentials. In particular, we study spectral operators with quadratic dependence on the spectral parameter. The corresponding hierarchy of integrable equations includes the Kaup–Boussinesq equation. We formulate the inverse problem as a Riemann–Hilbert problem with a Z2 reduction group. The soliton solutions are explicitly obtained.

Wave Propagation And Dispersion In Microstructured Solids, Arkadi Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski Jan 2012

Wave Propagation And Dispersion In Microstructured Solids, Arkadi Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

A series of numerical simulations is carried on in order to understand the accuracy of dispersive wave models for microstructured solids. The computations are performed by means of the finite-volume numerical scheme, which belongs to the class of wave-propagation algorithms. The dispersion effects are analyzed in materials with different internal structures: microstructure described by micromorphic theory, regular laminates, laminates with substructures, etc., for a large range of material parameters and wavelengths.

A Zeta Function For Juggling Sequences, Carsten Elsner, Dominic Klyve, Erik R. Tou Jan 2012

A Zeta Function For Juggling Sequences, Carsten Elsner, Dominic Klyve, Erik R. Tou

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

We give a new generalization of the Riemann zeta function to the set of b-ball juggling sequences. We develop several properties of this zeta function, noting among other things that it is rational in b−s. We provide a meromorphic continuation of the juggling zeta function to the entire complex plane (except for a countable set of singularities) and completely enumerate its zeroes. For most values of b, we are able to show that the zeroes of the b-ball zeta function are located within a critical strip, which is closely analogous to that of the Riemann zeta function.

Stability Indices For Constrained Self-Adjoint Operators, Todd Kapitula, Keith Promislow Jan 2012

Stability Indices For Constrained Self-Adjoint Operators, Todd Kapitula, Keith Promislow

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A wide class of problems in the study of the spectral and orbital stability of dispersive waves in Hamiltonian systems can be reduced to understanding the so-called "energy spectrum", that is, the spectrum of the second variation of the Hamiltonian evaluated at the wave shape, which is constrained to act on a closed subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. We present a substantially simplified proof of the negative eigenvalue count for such constrained, self-adjoint operators, and extend the result to include an analysis of the location of the point spectra of the constrained operator relative to that of the unconstrained …

Dual Numbers, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2012

Dual Numbers, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Dual numbers was first introduced by W.K. Clifford in 1873. This nice concept has lots of applications; to screw systems, modeling plane joint, iterative methods for displacement analysis of spatial mechanisms, inertial force analysis of spatial mechanisms etc. In this book the authors study dual numbers in a special way. The main aim of this book is to find rich sources of new elements g such that g2 = 0. The main sources of such new elements are from Zn, n a composite number. We give algebraic structures on them. This book is organized into six chapters. The final chapter …

Granular Computing For Assessment Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Melaku Ayenew Bogale Jan 2012

Granular Computing For Assessment Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Melaku Ayenew Bogale

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is one of the most common neurological disorders. It is a serious public health problem in the United States. Although, penetrating (open) brain injuries that result in extended period of loss of consciousness (LOC) usually gets attention and well taken care of by the emergency departments, mild traumatic brain injury with no visible sign of damage, may be undetected or misdiagnosed. The clinical assessments and evaluations are mostly based on subjective cognitive and behavioral tests. Many people after suffering mTBI complain about decreased balance, coordination and stability even though the clinical evaluations show no sign …

Constrained Optimal Control For A Multi-Group Discrete Time Influenza Model, Paula Andrea Gonzalez Parra Jan 2012

Constrained Optimal Control For A Multi-Group Discrete Time Influenza Model, Paula Andrea Gonzalez Parra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

During the last decades, mathematical epidemiological models have been used to understand the dynamics of infectious diseases and guide public health policy. In particular, several continuous models have been considered to study single in uenza outbreaks and the impact of dierent control policies. In this dissertation, a discrete time model is introduced in order to study optimal control strategies for in uenza transmission; since epidemiological data is collected on discrete units of time, a discrete formulation is more ecient. From a mathematical point of view, continuous time model are easier to analyze, however, the numerical solution of discrete-time models is …

Constrained Optimization Schemes For Geophysical Inversion Of Seismic Data, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre Jan 2012

Constrained Optimization Schemes For Geophysical Inversion Of Seismic Data, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Many experimental techniques in geophysics advance the understanding of Earth processes by estimating and interpreting Earth structure (e.g., velocity and/or density structure). These techniques use dierent types of geophysical data which can be collected and analyzed separately, sometimes resulting in inconsistent models of the Earth depending on data quality, methods and assumptions made. This dissertation presents two approaches for geophysical inversion of seismic data based on constrained optimization. In one approach we expand a one dimensional (1-D) joint inversion least-squares (LSQ) algorithm by introducing a constrained optimization methodology. Then we use the 1-D inversion results to produce 3-D Earth velocity …

Analytical And Numerical Solution To The Partial Differential Equation Arising In Financial Modeling, Pavel Bezdek Jan 2012

Analytical And Numerical Solution To The Partial Differential Equation Arising In Financial Modeling, Pavel Bezdek

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this work we will present a self-contained introduction to the option pricing problem. We will introduce some basic ideas from the probability theory and stochastic differential equations. Later we will move to the partial differential equations since the option pricing problem arising in financial mathematics when asset is driven by a stochastic volatility process and assumed presence of transaction cost leads to solving non-linear partial dif- ferential equation. We will also present the complete process from deriving the desired partial differential equation to the proof of existence of a solution and also the numerical simulations. Using techniques form stochastic …

Influence Of Damping On Hyperbolic Equations With Parabolic Degeneracy, Katarzyna Saxton, Ralph Saxton Jan 2012

Influence Of Damping On Hyperbolic Equations With Parabolic Degeneracy, Katarzyna Saxton, Ralph Saxton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effect of damping on a nonstrictly hyperbolic 2 x 2 system. It is shown that the growth of singularities is not restricted as in the strictly hyperbolic case where dissipation can be strong enough to preserve the smoothness of solutions globally in time. Here, irrespective of the stabilizing properties of damping, solutions are found to break down in finite time on a line where two eigenvalues coincide in state space.

An H1 Model For Inextensible Strings, Stephen C. Preston, Ralph Saxton Jan 2012

An H1 Model For Inextensible Strings, Stephen C. Preston, Ralph Saxton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study geodesics of the H1 Riemannian metric (see article for equation) on the space of inextensible curves (see article for equation). This metric is a regularization of the usual L2 metric on curves, for which the submanifold geometry and geodesic equations have been analyzed already. The H1 geodesic equation represents a limiting case of the Pochhammer-Chree equation from elasticity theory. We show the geodesic equation is C∞ in the Banach topology C1 ([0,1], R2), and thus there is a smooth Riemannian exponential map. Furthermore, if we hold one of the curves fixed, …

Critical Buckling Loads Of The Perfect Hollomon’S Power-Law Columns, Dongming Wei, Alejandro Sarria, Mohamed Elgindi Jan 2012

Critical Buckling Loads Of The Perfect Hollomon’S Power-Law Columns, Dongming Wei, Alejandro Sarria, Mohamed Elgindi

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this work, we present analytic formulas for calculating the critical buckling states of some plastic axial columns of constant cross-sections. The associated critical buckling loads are calculated by Euler-type analytic formulas and the associated deformed shapes are presented in terms of generalized trigonometric functions. The plasticity of the material is defined by the Holloman’s power-law equation. This is an extension of the Euler critical buckling loads of perfect elastic columns to perfect plastic columns. In particular, critical loads for perfect straight plastic columns with circular and rectangular cross-sections are calculated for a list of commonly used metals. Connections and …

Some Generalized Trigonometric Sine Functions And Their Applications, Dongming Wei, Yu Liu, Mohamed B. Elgindi Jan 2012

Some Generalized Trigonometric Sine Functions And Their Applications, Dongming Wei, Yu Liu, Mohamed B. Elgindi

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, it is shown that D. Shelupsky's generalized sine function, and various general sine functions developed by P. Drabek, R. Manasevich and M. Otani, P. Lindqvist, including the generalized Jacobi elliptic sine function of S. Takeuchi can be defined by systems of first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with initial conditions. The structure of the system of differential equations is shown to be related to the Hamilton System in Lagrangian Mechanics. Numerical solutions of the ODE systems are solved to demonstrate the sine functions graphically. It is also demonstrated that the some of the generalized sine functions can …

On The Global Solvability Of A Class Of Fourth-Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, M.B.M. Elgindi, Dongming Wei Jan 2012

On The Global Solvability Of A Class Of Fourth-Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, M.B.M. Elgindi, Dongming Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper we prove the global solvability of a class of fourth-order nonlinear boundary value problems that govern the deformation of a Hollomon’s power-law plastic beam subject to an axial compression and nonlinear lateral constrains. For certain ranges of the acting axial compression force, the solvability of the equations follows from the monotonicity of the fourth order nonlinear differential operator. Beyond these ranges the monotonicity of the operator is lost. It is shown that, in this case, the global solvability may be generated by the lower order nonlinear terms of the equations for a certain type of constrains.

R0 Analysis Of A Spatiotemporal Model For A Stream Population, H. W. Mckenzie, Y. Jin, J. Jacobsen, M. A. Lewis

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Water resources worldwide require management to meet industrial, agricultural, and urban consumption needs. Management actions change the natural flow regime, which impacts the river ecosystem. Water managers are tasked with meeting water needs while mitigating ecosystem im- pacts. We develop process-oriented advection-diffusion-reaction equations that couple hydraulic flow to population growth, and we analyze them to assess the effect of water flow on population persistence. We present a new mathematical framework, based on the net reproductive rate R0 for advection-diffusion-reaction equations and on related measures. We apply the measures to popula- tion persistence in rivers under various flow regimes. This …

Numerical Computation Of A Certain Dirichlet Series Attached To Siegel Modular Forms Of Degree Two, Nathan C. Ryan, Nils-Peter Skoruppa, Fredrik Stroemberg Jan 2012

Numerical Computation Of A Certain Dirichlet Series Attached To Siegel Modular Forms Of Degree Two, Nathan C. Ryan, Nils-Peter Skoruppa, Fredrik Stroemberg

Faculty Journal Articles

The Rankin convolution type Dirichlet series D-F,D-G(s) of Siegel modular forms F and G of degree two, which was introduced by Kohnen and the second author, is computed numerically for various F and G. In particular, we prove that the series D-F,D-G(s), which shares the same functional equation and analytic behavior with the spinor L-functions of eigenforms of the same weight are not linear combinations of those. In order to conduct these experiments a numerical method to compute the Petersson scalar products of Jacobi Forms is developed and discussed in detail.

Discrete Event Simulation Of Elevator Systems, Sasi Bharath Desai Jan 2012

Discrete Event Simulation Of Elevator Systems, Sasi Bharath Desai

CMC Senior Theses

The intent of this paper is to present the reader with a simple comparison of two systems of vertical transportation. Vertical transportation is a a relatively new field and is the subject of much interest in today's world. As buildings get taller and real estate becomes more expensive, the need to find a quick, efficient system with a small footprint becomes important. By performing a simulation and subjecting the two systems under study to similar traffic conditions, one can determine the effectiveness of one system relative to the other. Additionally, we look at the effects of changing various system attributes …

Infeasible Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, Antré Marquel Drummer Jan 2012

Infeasible Full-Newton-Step Interior-Point Method For The Linear Complementarity Problems, Antré Marquel Drummer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this tesis, we present a new Infeasible Interior-Point Method (IPM) for monotone Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC). The advantage of the method is that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. However, by suitable choice of parameters the iterates are forced to stay in the neighborhood of the central path, hence, still guaranteeing the global convergence of the method under strict feasibility assumption. The number of iterations necessary to find -approximate solution of the problem matches the best known iteration bounds for these types of methods. The preliminary implementation of the method …
