Particle Trajectories In Extreme Stokes Waves Over Inifinte Depth, Tony Lyons Jan 2013

Particle Trajectories In Extreme Stokes Waves Over Inifinte Depth, Tony Lyons

Articles

We investigate the velocity field of fluid particles in an extreme water wave over infinite depth. It is shown that the trajectories of the particles within the fluid and along the free surface do not form closed paths over the course of one period, but rather undergo a positive drift in the direction of wave propagation. In addition it is shown that the wave crest cannot form a stagnation point despite the velocity of the fluid being zero there.

Adaptive Stochastic Conjugate Gradient Optimization For Temporal Medical Image Registration, Huanhuan Xu Jan 2013

Adaptive Stochastic Conjugate Gradient Optimization For Temporal Medical Image Registration, Huanhuan Xu

LSU Master's Theses

We propose an Adaptive Stochastic Conjugate Gradient (ASCG) optimization algorithm for temporal medical image registration. This method combines the advantages of Conjugate Gradient (CG) method and Adaptive Stochastic Gradient Descent (ASGD) method. The main idea is that the search direction of ASGD is replaced by stochastic approximations of the conjugate gradient of the cost function. In addition, the step size of ASCG is based on the approximation of the Lipschitz constant of the stochastic gradient function. Thus, this algorithm could maintain the good properties of the conjugate gradient method, meanwhile it uses less gradient computation time per iteration and adjusts …

Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen Jan 2013

Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen

Scripps Senior Theses

Clustering is a mathematical method of data analysis which identifies trends in data by efficiently separating data into a specified number of clusters so is incredibly useful and widely applicable for questions of interrelatedness of data. Two methods of clustering are considered here. K-means clustering defines clusters in relation to the centroid, or center, of a cluster. Spectral clustering establishes connections between all of the data points to be clustered, then eliminates those connections that link dissimilar points. This is represented as an eigenvector problem where the solution is given by the eigenvectors of the Normalized Graph Laplacian. Spectral clustering …

Applications Of Fourier Analysis To Audio Signal Processing: An Investigation Of Chord Detection Algorithms, Nathan Lenssen

CMC Senior Theses

The discrete Fourier transform has become an essential tool in the analysis of digital signals. Applications have become widespread since the discovery of the Fast Fourier Transform and the rise of personal computers. The field of digital signal processing is an exciting intersection of mathematics, statistics, and electrical engineering. In this study we aim to gain understanding of the mathematics behind algorithms that can extract chord information from recorded music. We investigate basic music theory, introduce and derive the discrete Fourier transform, and apply Fourier analysis to audio files to extract spectral data.

Uncertainty Quantification Of Film Cooling Effectiveness In Gas Turbines, Hessam Babaee Jan 2013

Uncertainty Quantification Of Film Cooling Effectiveness In Gas Turbines, Hessam Babaee

LSU Master's Theses

In this study the effect of uncertainty of velocity ratio on jet in crossflow and particual- rly film cooling performance is studied. Direct numerical simulations have been combined with a stochastic collocation approach where the parametric space is discretized using Multi-Element general Polynomial Chaos (ME-gPC) method. Velocity ratio serves as a bifurcation parameter in a jet in a crossflow and the dynamical system is shown to have several bifurcations. As a result of the bifurcations, the target functional is observed to have low-regularity with respect to the paramteric space. In that sense, ME-gPC is particularly effective in discretizing the parametric …

Statistical Classification Problems In Assessment Of Teachers, Xuan Wang

LSU Master's Theses

Classification and regression trees form an important and indispensable tool in data analysis and classification problems. Class trees are described in detail with examples. The method is applied to a data set pertaining to evaluation of teachers. In addition, two other classification methods, bagging and AdaBoost are explained. These methods improve existing classifiers to nearly optimal classifiers.

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon Jan 2013

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A weighing matrix is a square matrix whose entries are 1, 0 or −1, such that the matrix times its transpose is some integer multiple of the identity matrix. We examine the case where these matrices are said to be devel- oped by an abelian group. Through a combination of extending previous results and by giving explicit constructions we will answer the question of existence for 318 such matrices of order and weight both below 100. At the end, we are left with 98 open cases out of a possible 1,022. Further, some of the new results provide insight into …

Pressure Poisson Method For The Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations Using Galerkin Finite Elements, John Cornthwaite Jan 2013

Pressure Poisson Method For The Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations Using Galerkin Finite Elements, John Cornthwaite

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we examine the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) with the continuity equation replaced by a pressure Poisson equation (PPE). Appropriate boundary conditions are developed for the PPE, which allow for a fully decoupled numerical scheme to recover the pressure. The variational form of the NSE with PPE is derived and used in the Galerkin Finite Element discretization. The Galerkin finite element method is then used to solve the NSE with PPE. Moderate accuracy is shown.

Full Newton Step Interior Point Method For Linear Complementarity Problem Over Symmetric Cones, Andrii Berdnikov Jan 2013

Full Newton Step Interior Point Method For Linear Complementarity Problem Over Symmetric Cones, Andrii Berdnikov

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we present a new Feasible Interior-Point Method (IPM) for Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC) over Symmetric Cones. The advantage of this method lies in that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. By suitable choice of parameters we prove the global convergence of iterates which always stay in the the central path neighborhood. A global convergence of the method is proved and an upper bound for the number of iterations necessary to find ε-approximate solution of the problem is presented.

Post-Pareto Optimality Methods For The Analysis Of Large Pareto Sets In Multi-Objective Optimization, Victor Manuel Carrillo Jan 2013

Post-Pareto Optimality Methods For The Analysis Of Large Pareto Sets In Multi-Objective Optimization, Victor Manuel Carrillo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Multiple objective optimization involves the simultaneous optimization of more than one, possibly conflicting, objectives. Multiple objective optimization problems arise in a variety of real-world applications. In general, the main difference between single and multi-objective optimization is that in multi-objective optimization there is usually no single optimal solution, but a set of equally good alternatives with different trade-offs, also known as Pareto-optimal solutions. There are two general approaches to solve multiple objective optimization problems: mathematical methods and meta-heuristic methods. The first approach involves the aggregation of the attributes into a linear combination of the objective functions, also known as scalarization. The …

Automatic Elucidation Of Gpi Molecular Structures With Grid Computing Technology, Juan Clemente Aguilar Bonavides Jan 2013

Automatic Elucidation Of Gpi Molecular Structures With Grid Computing Technology, Juan Clemente Aguilar Bonavides

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins are involved in many biological processes and are of medical importance. The identification and analysis of the entire collection of free and protein-linked GPIs within an organism (i.e., GPIomics) requires highly sensitive instruments. At present, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS or -MSn) is the most efficient laboratory technique for these tasks. As a typical MSn experiment produces hundreds of thousands of spectra, the data analysis creates a major bottleneck in high-throughput GPIomic projects. Yet, no computational tool for characterizing the chemical structures of GPI is available to date. We propose a library-search algorithm to …

Modeling The Human Gait Phases Using Granular Computing, Melaku Ayenew Bogale Jan 2013

Modeling The Human Gait Phases Using Granular Computing, Melaku Ayenew Bogale

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Gait analysis is applied for the provision of diagnosis, evaluation, and for the design of therapeutic intervention for subjects suffering from neurological disorders. The benefits accruing from gait analysis are well established. People with neurological disorders like mild traumatic brain injury, Cerebral Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis, suffer associated functional gait problems. The symptoms and sign of these gait deficits are different from subject to subject and even for the same subject at different stage of the disease. Identifying these gait related abnormalities helps in the treatment planning and rehabilitation process.

The dynamic behavior of gait parameters is cyclic and the …

A Block Operator Splitting Method For Heterogeneous Multiscale Poroelasticity, Paul M. Delgado Jan 2013

A Block Operator Splitting Method For Heterogeneous Multiscale Poroelasticity, Paul M. Delgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Traditional models of poroelastic deformation in porous media assume relatively homogeneous material properties such that macroscopic constitutive relations lead to accurate results. Many realistic applications involve heterogeneous material properties whose oscillatory nature require multiscale methods to balance accuracy and efficiency in computation.

The current study develops a multiscale method for poroelastic deformation based on a fixed point iteration based operator splitting method and a heterogeneous multiscale method using finite volume and direct stiffness methods. To characterize the convergence

of the operator splitting method, we use a numerical root finding algorithm to determine a threshold surface in a non-dimensional parameter space …

The pollutant's lags were chosen using the historical …

A Convex Optimization Algorithm For Sparse Representation And Applications In Classification Problems, Reinaldo Sanchez Arias Jan 2013

A Convex Optimization Algorithm For Sparse Representation And Applications In Classification Problems, Reinaldo Sanchez Arias

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In pattern recognition and machine learning, a classification problem refers to finding an algorithm for assigning a given input data into one of several categories. Many natural signals are sparse or compressible in the sense that they have short representations when expressed in a suitable basis. Motivated by the recent successful development of algorithms for sparse signal recovery, we apply the selective nature of sparse representation to perform classification. Any test sample is represented in an overcomplete dictionary with the training sample as base elements. A given test sample can be expressed as a linear combination of only those training …

On Different Techniques For The Calculation Of Bouguer Gravity Anomalies For Joint Inversion And Model Fusion Of Geophysical Data In The Rio Grande Rift, Azucena Zamora Jan 2013

On Different Techniques For The Calculation Of Bouguer Gravity Anomalies For Joint Inversion And Model Fusion Of Geophysical Data In The Rio Grande Rift, Azucena Zamora

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density variations in the Earth result from different material properties, which reflect the tectonic processes attributed to a region. Density variations can be identified through measurable material properties, such as seismic velocities, gravity field, magnetic field, etc. Gravity anomaly inversions are particularly sensitive to density variations but suffer from significant non-uniqueness. However, using inverse models with gravity Bouguer anomalies and other geophysical data, we can determine three dimensional structural and geological properties of the given area. We explore different techniques for the calculation of Bouguer gravity anomalies for their use in joint inversion of multiple geophysical data sets and a …

The Truth About Lie Symmetries: Solving Differential Equations With Symmetry Methods, Ruth A. Steinhour Jan 2013

The Truth About Lie Symmetries: Solving Differential Equations With Symmetry Methods, Ruth A. Steinhour

Senior Independent Study Theses

Differential equations are vitally important in numerous scientific fields. Oftentimes, they are quite challenging to solve. This Independent Study examines one method for solving differential equations. Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie developed this method, which uses groups of symmetries, called Lie groups. These symmetries map one solution curve to another. They can be used to determine a canonical coordinate system for a given differential equation. Writing the differential equation in terms of a different coordinate system can make the equation simpler to solve. This I.S. explores techniques for finding a canonical coordinate system and using it to solve a given differential …

Global Attracting Equilibria For Coupled Systems With Ceiling Density Dependence, Eric A. Eager, Mary Hebert, Elise Hellwig, Francisco Hernandez, Richard Rebarber, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Bryan Wigianto

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a system of two difference equations modeling the dynamics of a coupled population with two patches. Each patch can house only a limited number of individuals (called a carrying capacity) because resources like food and breeding sites are limited in each patch. We assume that the population in each patch is governed by a linear model until reaching a carrying capacity in each patch, resulting in map which is nonlinear and not sublinear. We analyze the global attractors of this model.

Sampling From The Hardcore Process, William C. Dodds Jan 2013

Sampling From The Hardcore Process, William C. Dodds

CMC Senior Theses

Partially Recursive Acceptance Rejection (PRAR) and bounding chains used in conjunction with coupling from the past (CFTP) are two perfect simulation protocols which can be used to sample from a variety of unnormalized target distributions. This paper first examines and then implements these two protocols to sample from the hardcore gas process. We empirically determine the subset of the hardcore process's parameters for which these two algorithms run in polynomial time. Comparing the efficiency of these two algorithms, we find that PRAR runs much faster for small values of the hardcore process's parameter whereas the bounding chain approach is vastly …

Influence Of Mechanical And Thermal Boundary Conditions On Stabilizing/Destabilizing Mechanisms In Evaporating Liquid Films, Aneet Dharmavaram Narendranath

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Liquid films, evaporating or non-evaporating, are ubiquitous in nature and technology. The dynamics of evaporating liquid films is a study applicable in several industries such as water recovery, heat exchangers, crystal growth, drug design etc. The theory describing the dynamics of liquid films crosses several fields such as engineering, mathematics, material science, biophysics and volcanology to name a few.

Interfacial instabilities typically manifest by the undulation of an interface from a presumed flat state or by the onset of a secondary flow state from a primary quiescent state or both. To study the instabilities affecting liquid films, an evaporating/non-evaporating Newtonian …

Creating A User Satisfaction Index From A Parsimonious Survey Instrument, Brian Barthel Jan 2013

Creating A User Satisfaction Index From A Parsimonious Survey Instrument, Brian Barthel

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In this paper we present a comprehensive method for creating a user satisfaction index using a survey instrument. First we construct a parsimonious survey instrument, using the PageRank Centrality, to measure attributes of user satisfaction. Then confirmatory factor analysis is applied to extract ``weights'' on the questions that are used in a linear model of computing the user satisfaction index. Throughout the paper an analysis of an existing data set is implemented to illustrate the proposed method. In addition the validity of the confirmatory factor model is tested using bootstrap sampling.

Integrable Systems As Fluid Models With Physical Applications, Tony Lyons Jan 2013

Integrable Systems As Fluid Models With Physical Applications, Tony Lyons

Doctoral

In this thesis we begin with the development and analysis of hydrodynamical models as they arise in the theory of water waves and in the modelling of blood flow within arteries. Initially we derive three models of hydrodynamical relevance, namely the KdV equation, the two component Camassa-Holm equation and the Kaup-Boussinesq equation. We develop a model of blood flowing within an artery with elastic walls, and from the principles of Newtonian mechanics we derive the two-component Burger's equation as our first integrable model. We investigate the analytic properties of the system briefly, with the aim of demonstrating the phenomenon of …

Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Ns-Laser Ablation, David Autrique, Vasilios Alexiades, Harihar Khanal

Publications

Laser ablation is a versatile and widespread technique, applied in an increasing number of medical, industrial and analytical applications. A hydrodynamic multiphase model describing nanosecond-laser ablation (ns- LA) is outlined. The model accounts for target heating and mass removal mechanisms as well as plume expansion and plasma formation. A copper target is placed in an ambient environment consisting of helium and irradiated by a nanosecond-laser pulse. The effect of variable laser settings on the ablation process is explored in 1-D numerical simulations.
