Lyapunov Functionals That Lead To Exponential Stability And Instability In Finite Delay Volterra Difference Equations, Catherine Kublik, Youssef Raffoul

We use Lyapunov functionals to obtain sufficient conditions that guarantee exponential stability of the zero solution of the finite delay Volterra difference equation.
Also, by displaying a slightly different Lyapunov functional, we obtain conditions that guarantee the instability of the zero solution. The highlight of the paper is the relaxing of the condition |a(t)| < 1. Moreover, we provide examples in which we show that our theorems provide an improvement of some recent results.

For distinct points p and q in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold, one defines their mediatrix Lpq as the set of equidistant points to p and q. It is known that mediatrices have a cell decomposition consisting of a finite number of branch points connected by Lipschitz curves. This paper establishes additional geometric regularity properties of mediatrices. We show that mediatrices have the radial linearizability property, which implies that at each point they have a geometrically defined derivative in the branching directions. We examine a simplified model of internal geophysical waves in a rotational 2-dimensional water-wave system, under the influence of Coriolis forces and with gravitationally induced waves. The system consists of a lower medium, bound underneath by an impermeable flat bed, and an upper lid. The 2 media have a free common interface. Both media have constant density and constant (non-zero) vorticity. By examining the governing equations of the system we calculate the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of its conjugate variables and perform a variable transformation to show that it has canonical Hamiltonian structure. We are analyzing several types of dynamical systems which are both integrable and important for physical applications. The first type are the so-called peakon systems that appear in the singular solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation describing special types of water waves. The second type are Toda chain systems, that describe molecule interactions. Their complexifications model soliton interactions in the adiabatic approximation. We analyze the algebraic aspects of the Toda chains and describe their real Hamiltonian forms.

We discuss three examples in which one may extend integrable Euler–Poincare ordinary differential equations to integrable Euler–Poincare partial differential
equations in the matrix G-Strand context. After describing matrix G-Strand examples for SO(3) and SO(4) we turn our attention to SE(3) where the matrix G-Strand equations recover the exact rod theory in the convective representation. We then find a zero curvature representation of these equations and establish the conditions under which they are completely integrable. This study is conducted to investigate if the designed four-step method strategy (GEAR strategy adapted from Polya, 1973) in solving math problems has improved students’ performance scores and enhanced the metacognitive skills of gifted students. The respondents of this study include middle school gifted students who took math eight course in the school year 2013-2014 at Westdale Middle School in East Baton Rouge Parish School System. This study took place at a medium-sized suburban high school. It was designed to determine the usefulness of certain teacher-made tests in predicting students' end-of-course (EOC) tests. The teacher taught the students the skills in which their performance was weakest on the previous state test. The students were tested after each skill on a four-point quiz (teacher-made test). Students who scored 3—4 moved on to the next lesson or enrichment, while those who scored 0—2 were re-taught and re-tested. The procedure was repeated throughout the school year. At the end of the course, students took the state-mandated end-of-course test. The …

We consider the existence of multi-peak solutions to two types of free boundary problems arising in confined plasma and steady vortex pair under conditions on the nonlinearity we believe to be almost optimal. Our results show that the “core” of the solution has multiple connected components, whose boundary called free boundary of the problems consists approximately of spheres which shrink to distinct single points as the parameter tends to zero.

The complex Lorenz system is a simplified nonlinear dynamical system, which is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations that govern a closed thermal convection loop. The Lorenz system is chaotic for large Rayleigh number. In this chaotic regime, we implement a linear state feedback controller to stabilize the state trajectory at its original nontrivial equilibrium. The state variable for feedback is easily measurable. The system is proved to be globally asymptotically stable with a optimal feedback gain. The stability bound is improved over the previous result. Epistasis is the interaction between two or more genes to control a single phenotype. We model epistasis of the prey in a two-locus two-allele problem in a basic predator- prey relationship. The resulting model allows us to examine both population sizes as well as genotypic and phenotypic frequencies. In the context of several numerical examples, we show that if epistasis results in an undesirable or desirable phenotype in the prey by making the particular genotype more or less susceptible to the predator or dangerous to the predator, elimination of undesirable phenotypes and then genotypes occurs.

Medical image reconstruction by total variation minimization is a newly developed area in computed tomography (CT). In compressed sensing literature, it hasbeen shown that signals with sparse representations in an orthonormal basis may be reconstructed via l1-minimization. Furthermore, if an image can be approximately modeled to be piecewise constant, then its gradient is sparse. The application of l1-minimization to a sparse gradient, known as total variation minimization, may then be used to recover the image. Despite concerns that the Louisiana Pine Snake (Pituophis ruthveni) has been extirpated from large portions of its historic range, only a limited number of studies on their movement patterns have been published. Winter movement patterns are of particular interest since it has been hypothesized that impacts of management practices would be reduced during the winter. Using radiotelemetry, we determined winter movement patterns of Louisiana Pine Snakes (11 males, 8 females) in 5 study areas (2 in Louisiana and 3 in Texas). A numerical method for solving elliptic PDEs with variable coefficients on two-dimensional domains is presented. The method is based on high-order composite spectral approximations and is designed for problems with smooth solutions. The resulting system of linear equations is solved using a direct (as opposed to iterative) solver that has optimal $O(N)$ complexity for all stages of the computation when applied to problems with nonoscillatory solutions such as the Laplace and the Stokes equations. Numerical examples demonstrate that the scheme is capable of computing solutions with a relative accuracy of $10^{-10}$ or better for challenging problems such as highly oscillatory …

In this paper, we will discuss a method of building a predictive model for Major League Baseball Games. We detail the reasoning for pursuing the proposed predictive model in terms of social popularity and the complexity of analyzing individual variables. We apply a coarse-grain outlook inspired by Simon Dedeos' work on Human Social Systems, in particular the open source website Wikipedia [2] by attempting to quantify the influence of winning and losing streaks instead of analyzing individual performance variables. In this Thesis, we explore the solution methods for the linear system resulting from a mixed finite element method applied to the Biot's consolidation model. This model describes the coupled interactions between a porous solid and the fluid contained within it. Specifically, we use a method developed by Yi [Numer. Methods for PDEs, 29(5), pp. 1749-1777] that expands Biot's system to include fluid pressure, solid displacement, fluid flux and total stress as primary unknowns.

Material properties of polycrystalline aggregates should manifest the influence of crystallographic texture as defined by the orientation distribution function (ODF). A representation theorem on material tensors of weakly-textured polycrystals was established by Man and Huang (2012), by which a given material tensor can be expressed as a linear combination of an orthonormal set of irreducible basis tensors, with the components given explicitly in terms of texture coefficients and a number of undetermined material parameters. The two-source energy balance (TSEB) model calculates the energy balance of the soil-canopy-atmosphere continuum, where transpiration is initially determined by the Priestley-Taylor equation. The TSEB was revised recently using the Penman-Monteith equation to replace the Priestley-Taylor formulation, thus better accounting for the impact of large and varying vapor pressure deficits (VPD) typical of advective, semiarid climates. This study is a comparison of the Priestley- Taylor and Penman-Monteith versions of the TSEB (termed TSEB-PT and TSEB-PM, respectively). Matroids were introduced in 1935 by Hassler Whitney to provide a way to abstractly capture the dependence properties common to graphs and matrices. One important class of matroids arises by taking as objects some finite collection of one-dimensional subspaces of a vector space. If, instead, one takes as objects some finite collection of subspaces of dimensions at most k in a vector space, one gets an example of a k-polymatroid.

The Kaczmarz method is an iterative algorithm that solves overdetermined systems of linear equalities. This paper studies a system of linear equalities and inequalities. We use the block version of the Kaczmarz method applied towards the equalities with the simple randomized Kaczmarz scheme for the inequalities. This primarily involves combining Needell and Tropp's work on the block Kaczmarz method with the application of a randomized Kaczmarz approach towards a system of equalities and inequalities performed by Leventhal and Lewis. From the agent-based, correlated random walk model presented, we observe the effects of varying the parameter values of maximum insect turning area, ��max, density of trees, ω, maximum pollen carryover, ��max, and probability of fertilization, P��, on the distribution of pollen within a population of Cornus florida (flowering dogwood). We see that varying ��max and ��max changes the dispersal distance of pollen, which greatly affects many measures of connectivity. The advent of computers, and especially high-performance computers, has had a dramatic impact on the way in which mathematics is done and even more on how mathematics is applied, as demonstrated by the growth of computational mathematics as well as what goes under the name of “experimental mathematics”, to which a journal is now devoted. More importantly, computers are now used to perform highly complex computations in order to apply mathematical models to a variety of empirical problems that could never be attacked otherwise.

Given a compact, oriented 3-manifold M in S3 with boundary, an (M,2n)-tangle T is a 1-manifold with 2n boundary components properly embedded in M. We say that T embeds in a link L in S3 if T can be completed to L by adding a 1-manifold with 2n boundary components exterior to M. The link L is called a closure of T. Laser ablation in an ambient environment is becoming increasingly important in science and technology. It is used in applications ranging from chemical analysis via mass spectroscopy, to pulsed laser deposition and nanoparticle manufacturing. We describe numerical schemes for a multiphase hydrodynamic model of nanosecond laser ablation expressing energy, momentum, and mass conservation in the target material, as well as in the expanding plasma plume, along with collisional and radiative processes for laser-induced breakdown (plasma formation). Numerical simulations for copper in a helium background gas are presented and the efficiency of various ODE integrators is compared.
