Almost Sure Asymptotic Stabilization Of Differential Equations With Time-Varying Delay By Lévy Noise, Dezhi Liu, Weiqun Wang, Jose Luis Menaldi Jan 2015

Almost Sure Asymptotic Stabilization Of Differential Equations With Time-Varying Delay By Lévy Noise, Dezhi Liu, Weiqun Wang, Jose Luis Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

This paper aims to determine that the Lévy noise can stabilize the given differential equations with time-varying delay, which has generalized the Brownian motion case. An analysis is developed and sufficient conditions on the stabilization for stochastic differential equations with time-varying delay are presented. Our stabilization criteria is in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), whence the feedback controls can be designed more easily in practice.

Graphs Of Classroom Networks, Rebecca Holliday Jan 2015

Graphs Of Classroom Networks, Rebecca Holliday

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this work, we use the Havel-Hakimi algorithm to visualize data collected from students to investigate classroom networks. The Havel-Hakimi algorithm uses a recursive method to create a simple graph from a graphical degree sequence. In this case, the degree sequence is a representation of the students in a classroom, and we use the number of peers with whom a student studied or collaborated to determine the degree of each. We expand upon the Havel-Hakimi algorithm by coding a program in MATLAB that generates random graphs with the same degree sequence. Then, we run another algorithm to find the isomorphism …

Modeling Contagion In The Eurozone Crisis Via Dynamical Systems, Giuseppe Castellacci, Youngna Choi Jan 2015

Modeling Contagion In The Eurozone Crisis Via Dynamical Systems, Giuseppe Castellacci, Youngna Choi

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We recently (Castellacci and Choi, 2013) formulated a theoretical framework for the modeling of financial instability contagion using the theories of dynamical systems. Here, our main goal is to model the Eurozone financial crisis within that framework. The underlying system comprises many economic agents that belong to several subsystems. In each instantiation of this framework, the hierarchy and nesting of the subsystems is dictated by the nature of the problem at hand. We describe in great detail how a suitable model can be set up for the Eurozone crisis. The dynamical system is defined by the evolution of the wealths …

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song Jan 2015

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this work, we develop and analyze mathematical models for the coupled within-host and between-host dynamics caricaturing the evolution of HIV/AIDS. The host population is divided into susceptible, the infected without receiving treatment and the infected receiving ART treatment in accordance with China’s Four-Free-One-Care Policy. The within-host model is a typical ODE model adopted from literatures. The between-host model incorporates age-since-infection described by a system of integrodifferential equations. The two models are coupled via the viral load and number of CD4+ T cells of within the hosts. For the between-host model with an arbitrarily selected HIV infected individual, we focus …

Mathematical Modeling Of Emiliania Huxleyi And A Host-Specific Virus, Julia Middleton Jan 2015

Mathematical Modeling Of Emiliania Huxleyi And A Host-Specific Virus, Julia Middleton

Honors Theses

The world’s oceans provide the basis for life on the planet. One microscopic algae, the coccolithophores, and Emiliania huxleyi in particular, is a major source of carbon drawdown in the context of the global carbon cycle and account for a significant amount of the primary production in oceanic ecosystems. We know that the oceans are packed with marine viruses and they have an important role in the rise and fall of plankton populations but current mathematical models do not accurately account for virus-host interactions when predicting plankton blooms. Therefore I am using model optimization and comparison techniques to evaluate current …

Stochastic Approximation Algorithms With Applications To Particle Swarm Optimization, Adaptive Optimization, And Consensus, Quan Yuan Jan 2015

Stochastic Approximation Algorithms With Applications To Particle Swarm Optimization, Adaptive Optimization, And Consensus, Quan Yuan

Wayne State University Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present three problems arising in recent applications of stochastic approximation methods. In Chapter 2, we use stochastic approximation to analyze Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. We introduce four coefficients and rewrite the PSO procedure as a stochastic approximation type iterative algorithm. Then we analyze its convergence using weak convergence method. It is proved that a suitably scaled sequence of swarms converge to the solution of an ordinary differential equation. We also establish certain stability results. Moreover, convergence rates are ascertained by using weak convergence method. A centered and scaled sequence of the estimation errors is shown …

The Pascal Matrix Function And Its Applications To Bernoulli Numbers And Bernoulli Polynomials And Euler Numbers And Euler Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Jeff Liao, Peter Shiue Jan 2015

The Pascal Matrix Function And Its Applications To Bernoulli Numbers And Bernoulli Polynomials And Euler Numbers And Euler Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Jeff Liao, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

A Pascal matrix function is introduced by Call and Velleman in [3]. In this paper, we will use the function to give a united approach in the study of Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli polynomials. Many well-known and new properties of the Bernoulli numbers and polynomials can be established by using the Pascal matrix function. The approach is also applied to the study of Euler numbers and Euler polynomials.

Clique Topology Reveals Intrinsic Geometric Structure In Neural Correlations, Chad Giusti, Eva Pastalkova, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov Jan 2015

Clique Topology Reveals Intrinsic Geometric Structure In Neural Correlations, Chad Giusti, Eva Pastalkova, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Detecting meaningful structure in neural activity and connectivity data is challenging in the presence of hidden nonlinearities, where traditional eigenvalue-based methods may be misleading. We introduce a novel approach to matrix analysis, called clique topology, that extracts features of the data invariant under nonlinear monotone transformations. These features can be used to detect both random and geometric structure, and depend only on the relative ordering of matrix entries. We then analyzed the activity of pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampus, recorded while the animal was exploring a 2D environment, and confirmed that our method is able to detect geometric organization using …

The Interplay Between Wnt Mediated Expansion And Negative Regulation Of Growth Promotes Robust Intestinal Crypt Structure And Homeostasis, Huijing Du, Qing Nie, William R. Holmes Jan 2015

The Interplay Between Wnt Mediated Expansion And Negative Regulation Of Growth Promotes Robust Intestinal Crypt Structure And Homeostasis, Huijing Du, Qing Nie, William R. Holmes

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The epithelium of the small intestinal crypt, which has a vital role in protecting the underlying tissue from the harsh intestinal environment, is completely renewed every 4–5 days by a small pool of stem cells at the base of each crypt. How is this renewal controlled and homeostasis maintained, particularly given the rapid nature of this process? Here, based on the recent observations from in vitro “mini gut” studies, we use a hybrid stochastic model of the crypt to investigate how exogenous niche signaling (from Wnt and BMP) combines with auto-regulation to promote homeostasis. This model builds on the sub-cellular …

A Heterogeneous Multiscale Method For Poroelasticity, Paul M. Delgado Jan 2015

A Heterogeneous Multiscale Method For Poroelasticity, Paul M. Delgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this Thesis, we develop and analyze a heterogeneous multiscale model for coupled fluid flow and solid deformation in porous media based on operator splitting and finite volume method. The splitting method results in two elliptic multiscale PDE's in the form of a reaction diffusion equation and a linear elasticity equation. We extend our previous multiscale method from 1D to higher dimensions and develop new approaches for the inclusion of mixed boundary conditions and source terms. We derive an error estimate for our multiscale method and analyze the stability of our splitting method. We also test the effectiveness of our …

Singular Value Computation And Subspace Clustering, Qiao Liang Jan 2015

Singular Value Computation And Subspace Clustering, Qiao Liang

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation we discuss two problems. In the first part, we consider the problem of computing a few extreme eigenvalues of a symmetric definite generalized eigenvalue problem or a few extreme singular values of a large and sparse matrix. The standard method of choice of computing a few extreme eigenvalues of a large symmetric matrix is the Lanczos or the implicitly restarted Lanczos method. These methods usually employ a shift-and-invert transformation to accelerate the speed of convergence, which is not practical for truly large problems. With this in mind, Golub and Ye proposes an inverse-free preconditioned Krylov subspace method, …

Analysis And Constructions Of Subspace Codes, Carolyn E. Troha Jan 2015

Analysis And Constructions Of Subspace Codes, Carolyn E. Troha

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Random network coding is the most effcient way to send data across a network, but it is very susceptible to errors and erasures. In 2008, Kotter and Kschischang introduced subspace codes as an algebraic approach to error correcting in random network coding. Since this paper, there has been much work in constructing large subspace codes, as well as exploring the properties of such codes. This dissertation explores properties of one particular construction and introduces a new construction for subspace codes. We begin by exploring properties of irreducible cyclic orbit codes, which were introduced in 2011 by Rosenthal et al. As …

The Krylov Subspace Methods For The Computation Of Matrix Exponentials, Hao Wang Jan 2015

The Krylov Subspace Methods For The Computation Of Matrix Exponentials, Hao Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The problem of computing the matrix exponential etA arises in many theoretical and practical problems. Many methods have been developed to accurately and efficiently compute this matrix function or its product with a vector, i.e., etAv. In the past few decades, with the increasing need of the computation for large sparse matrices, iterative methods such as the Krylov subspace methods have proved to be a powerful class of methods in dealing with many linear algebra problems. The Krylov subspace methods have been introduced for computing matrix exponentials by Gallopoulos and Saad, and the corresponding error bounds …

On Some Recent Experimental Results Concerning Turbulent Coanda Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert Jan 2015

On Some Recent Experimental Results Concerning Turbulent Coanda Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert

Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Faculty Scholarship

The Coanda effect is the tendency of a stream of fluid to stay attached to a convex surface, rather than follow a straight line in its original direction. As a result, in such jets mixing takes place between the jet and the ambient air as soon as the jet issues from its exit nozzle, causing air to be entrained. This air-jet mixture adheres to the nearby surface. Whilst devices employing the Coanda effect usually offer substantial flow deflection, and enhanced turbulence levels and entrainment compared with conventional jet flows, these prospective advantages are generally accompanied by significant disadvantages including a …

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou Jan 2015

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

It is known that any 3-connected matroid that is large enough is certain to contain a minor of a given size belonging to one of a few special classes of matroids. This paper proves a similar unavoidable minor result for large 4-connected bicircular matroids. The main result follows from establishing the list of unavoidable minors of large 4-biconnected graphs, which are the graphs representing the 4-connected bicircular matroids. This paper also gives similar results for internally 4-connected and vertically 4-connected bicircular matroids.

Application Of Loglinear Models To Claims Triangle Runoff Data, Netanya Lee Martin Jan 2015

Application Of Loglinear Models To Claims Triangle Runoff Data, Netanya Lee Martin

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, we presented in detail different aspects of Verrall's chain ladder method and their advantages and disadvantages. Insurance companies must ensure there are enough reserves to cover future claims. To that end, it is useful to estimate mean expected losses. The chain ladder technique under a general linear model is the most widely used method for such estimation in property and casualty insurance. Verrall's chain ladder technique develops estimators for loss development ratios, mean expected ultimate claims, Bayesian premiums, and Bühlmann credibility premiums. The chain ladder technique can be used to estimate loss development in cases where data …

An Analysis Of Multiplicative Regularization, Elaheh Gorgin Jan 2015

An Analysis Of Multiplicative Regularization, Elaheh Gorgin

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Inverse problems arise in many branches of science and engineering. In order to get a good approximation of the solution of this kind of problems, the use of regularization methods is required. Tikhonov regularization is one of the most popular methods for estimating the solutions of inverse problems. This method needs a regularization parameter and the quality of the approximate solution depends on how good the regularization parameter is.

The L-curve method is a convenient parameter choice strategy for selecting the Tikhonov regularization parameter and it works well most of the time. There are some problems in which the L-curve …

In this book authors name the interval [0, m); 2 ≤ m ≤ ∞ as mod interval. We have studied several properties about them but only here on wards in this book and forthcoming books the interval [0, m) will be termed as the mod real interval, [0, m)I as mod neutrosophic interval, [0,m)g; g2 = 0 as mod dual number interval, [0, m)h; h2 = h as mod special dual like number interval and [0, m)k, k2 = (m − 1) k as mod special quasi dual number interval. However there is only one real interval (∞, ∞) but …

Partial Cosine-Funk Transforms At Poles Of The Cosine-Λ Transform On Grassmann Manifolds, Christopher Adam Cross Jan 2015

Partial Cosine-Funk Transforms At Poles Of The Cosine-Λ Transform On Grassmann Manifolds, Christopher Adam Cross

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The cosine-λ transform, denoted Cλ, is a family of integral transforms we can define on the sphere and on the Grassmannian manifolds of p-dimensional subspaces in Kn where K is R, C or the skew field H of quaternions. We treat the Grassmannians as the symmetric spaces SO(n)/S(O(p) × O(q)), SU(n)/S(U(p) × U(q)) and Sp(n)/(Sp(p) × Sp(q)) and we work by analogy with the case of the cosine-λ transform on the sphere, which is also a symmetric space.

The family Cλ extends meromorphically in λ to the complex plane with poles at (among other values) λ …

Knots, Skein Theory And Q-Series, Mustafa Hajij Jan 2015

Knots, Skein Theory And Q-Series, Mustafa Hajij

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The tail of a sequence {P_n(q)} of formal power series in Z[q^{-1}][[q]], if it exists, is the formal power series whose first $n$ coefficients agree up to a common sign with the first n coefficients of P_n. The colored Jones polynomial is link invariant that associates to every link in S^3 a sequence of Laurent polynomials. In the first part of this work we study the tail of the unreduced colored Jones polynomial of alternating links using the colored Kauffman skein relation. This gives a natural extension of a result by Kauffman, Murasugi, and Thistlethwaite regarding the highest and lowest …

Symbolic Neutrosophic Theory, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2015

Symbolic Neutrosophic Theory, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Symbolic (or Literal) Neutrosophic Theory is referring to the use of abstract symbols (i.e. the letters T, I, F, or their refined indexed letters Tj, Ik, Fl) in neutrosophics.

In the first chapter we extend the dialectical triad thesis-antithesis-synthesis (dynamics of A and antiA, to get a synthesis) to the neutrosophic tetrad thesis-antithesis-neutrothesis-neutrosynthesis (dynamics of A, antiA, and neutA, in order to get a neutrosynthesis).

In the second chapter we introduce the neutrosophic system and neutrosophic dynamic system. A neutrosophic system is a quasi- or –classical system, in the sense that the neutrosophic …

This book has four parts. In the first part, we collected five recent papers, published before in Progress in Physics, but reviewed. In the first paper, we approach a novel form of plasma, Unmatter Plasma. The electron-positron beam plasma was generated in the laboratory in the beginning of 2015. This experimental fact shows that unmatter, a new form of matter that is formed by matter and antimatter bind together (mathematically predicted a decade ago) really exists. That is the electron-positron plasma experiment of 2015 is the experimentum crucis verifying the mathematically predicted unmatter. In the second paper, we generalize the …

Study of MOD planes happens to a very recent one. Authors have studied several properties of MOD real planes Rn(m); 2 ≤ m ≤ ∞. In fact unlike the real plane R × R which is unique MOD real planes are infinite in number. Likewise MOD complex planes Cn(m); 2 ≤ m ≤ ∞, are infinitely many. The MOD neutrosophic planes RnI(m); 2 ≤ m ≤ ∞ are infinite in number where as we have only one neutrosophic plane R(I) = 〈R ∪ I〉 = {a + bI | I2 = I; a, b ∈ R}. Further three other new …

In this book authors answer the question proposed by Florentin Smarandache “Does there exist neutrosophic numbers which are such that they take values differently and behave differently from I; the indeterminate?”. We have constructed a class of natural neutrosophic numbers m 0I , m xI , m yI , m zI where m 0I × m 0I = m 0I , m xI × m xI = m xI and m yI × m yI = m yI and m yI × m xI = m 0I and m zI × m zI = m 0I . Here take m …
