Could Cultures Determine The Course Of Epidemics And Explain Waves Of Covid-19?, Md Salman Rahman
Could Cultures Determine The Course Of Epidemics And Explain Waves Of Covid-19?, Md Salman Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is an infectious disease that quickly became a pandemic spreading with different patterns in each country. Travel bans, lockdowns, social distancing, and non-essential business closures caused significant economic disruptions and stalled growth worldwide in the pandemic’s first year. In almost every country, public health officials forced and/or encouraged Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) such as contact tracing, social distancing, masks, and quarantine. Human behavioral decision-making regarding social isolation significantly impedes global success in containing the pandemic. This thesis focuses on human behaviors and cultures related to the decision-making of social isolation during the pandemic. …
Bridge Trisections And Classical Knotted Surface Theory, Jason Joseph, Jeffrey Meier, Maggie Miller, Miller Zupan
Bridge Trisections And Classical Knotted Surface Theory, Jason Joseph, Jeffrey Meier, Maggie Miller, Miller Zupan
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We seek to connect ideas in the theory of bridge trisections with other wellstudied facets of classical knotted surface theory. First, we show how the normal Euler number can be computed from a tri-plane diagram, and we use this to give a trisection-theoretic proof of the Whitney–Massey theorem, which bounds the possible values of this number in terms of the Euler characteristic. Second, we describe in detail how to compute the fundamental group and related invariants from a tri-plane diagram, and we use this, together with an analysis of bridge trisections of ribbon surfaces, to produce an infinite family of …
Relationships Between Covid-19 Infection Rates, Healthcare Access, Socioeconomic Status, And Cultural Diversity, Marghece P. J. Barnes
Relationships Between Covid-19 Infection Rates, Healthcare Access, Socioeconomic Status, And Cultural Diversity, Marghece P. J. Barnes
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on racial and ethnic minority groups, with high infection rates throughout those communities. There are a complex set of factors that account for COVID-19 disparities. Focusing on infection and death rates alone without also examining health equity, underestimates the true impact of the pandemic. To gain a more clear understanding of COVID-19’s impact in these communities, we analyzed the relationship between state COVID-19 infection rates with social determinants of health: cultural diversity, health care access, and socioeconomic status. Our approach to identifying this relationship was to estimate infection rates by fitting John …
Dimension And Ramsey Results In Partially Ordered Sets., Sida Wan
Dimension And Ramsey Results In Partially Ordered Sets., Sida Wan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, there are two major parts. One is the dimension results on different classes of partially ordered sets. We developed new tools and theorems to solve the bounds on interval orders using different number of lengths. We also discussed the dimension of interval orders that have a representation with interval lengths in a certain range. We further discussed the interval dimension and semi dimension for posets. In the second part, we discussed several related results on the Ramsey theory of grids, the results involve the application of Product Ramsey Theorem and Partition Ramsey Theorem
Cross-Validation For Autoregressive Models., Christina Han
Cross-Validation For Autoregressive Models., Christina Han
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are no set rules for choosing the lag order for autoregressive (AR) time series models. Currently, the most common methods employ AIC or BIC. However, AIC has been proven to be inconsistent and BIC is inefficient. Racine proposed an estimator based on Shao's work which he hypothesized would also be consistent, but left the proof as an open problem. We will show his claim does not follow immediately from Shao. However, Shao offered another consistent method for cross validation of linear models called APCV, and we will show that AR models satisfy Shao's conditions. Thus, APCV is a consistent …
A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, a mobility-based SIR model is built to understand the spread of the pandemic. A traditional SIR model used in epidemiology describes the transition of particles among states, such as susceptible, infected, and recovered states. However, the traditional model has no movement of particles. There are many variations of SIR models when it comes to the factor of mobility, the majority of studies use mobility intensity or population density as a measure of mobility. In this paper, a new dynamical SIR model, including the spatial motion of three-type particles, is constructed and the long-time behavior of the first …
Optimal First Order Methods For Reducing Gradient Norm In Unconstrained Convex Smooth Optimization, Yunheng Jiang
Optimal First Order Methods For Reducing Gradient Norm In Unconstrained Convex Smooth Optimization, Yunheng Jiang
All Theses
In this thesis, we focus on convergence performance of first-order methods to compute an $\epsilon$-approximate solution of minimizing convex smooth function $f$ at the $N$-th iteration.
In our introduction of the above research question, we first introduce the gradient descent method with constant step size $h=1/L$. The gradient descent method has a $\mathcal{O}(L^2\|x_0-x^*\|^2/\epsilon)$ convergence with respect to $\|\nabla f(x_N)\|^2$. Next we introduce Nesterov’s accelerated gradient method, which has an $\mathcal{O}(L\|x_0-x^*\|\sqrt{1/\epsilon})$ complexity in terms of $\|\nabla f(x_N)\|^2$. The convergence performance of Nesterov’s accelerated gradient method is much better than that of the gradient descent method but still not optimal. We also …
Efficiency Of Homomorphic Encryption Schemes, Kyle Yates
Efficiency Of Homomorphic Encryption Schemes, Kyle Yates
All Theses
In 2009, Craig Gentry introduced the first fully homomorphic encryption scheme using bootstrapping. In the 13 years since, a large amount of research has gone into improving efficiency of homomorphic encryption schemes. This includes implementing leveled homomorphic encryption schemes for practical use, which are schemes that allow for some predetermined amount of additions and multiplications that can be performed on ciphertexts. These leveled schemes have been found to be very efficient in practice. In this thesis, we will discuss the efficiency of various homomorphic encryption schemes. In particular, we will see how to improve sizes of parameter choices in homomorphic …

Maintaining Ecosystem And Economic Structure In A Three-Species Dynamical System In Chesapeake Bay, Maila Hallare, Iordanka Panayotova
Maintaining Ecosystem And Economic Structure In A Three-Species Dynamical System In Chesapeake Bay, Maila Hallare, Iordanka Panayotova
CODEE Journal
We consider a three-species fish dynamical system in Chesapeake Bay consisting of the Atlantic menhaden as the prey and its two competing predators, the striped bass and the catfish. Building on our previous work in this system, we consider the issue of balancing economic harvesting goals (financial gain for fishermen) with ecological harvesting goals (non-extinction of species). In particular, we investigate the bionomic equilibria, maximum sustainable yield, and the maximum economic yield. Analytical computations and numerical simulations are employed to provide some mathematical guidance on fisheries management policies.
Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa
Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa
Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
Radioactive sources, such as uranium-235, are nuclides that emit ionizing radiation, and which can be used to build nuclear weapons. In public areas, the presence of a radioactive nuclide can present a risk to the population, and therefore, it is imperative that threats are identified by radiological search and response teams in a timely and effective manner. In urban environments, such as densely populated cities, radioactive sources may be more difficult to detect, since background radiation produced by surrounding objects and structures (e.g., buildings, cars) can hinder the effective detection of unnatural radioactive material. This article presents a computational model …

An Iot Based Worker Safety Helmet Using Cloud Computing Technology, Yuthriya Iddi Khamis, Mahmoud Alawi, Waheed Muhammad Sanya
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Miner safety and security is a major challenge around the world due to the exposure to toxic gases that are frequently released in underground mines. Miners' health is adversely affected primarily by toxic gases, which endanger the workers' lives. Furthermore, human sensory abilities do not detect these dangerous gases. As a result, this paper proposes a safety monitoring system that includes a temperature sensor, humidity sensor, and gas sensors to detect harmful gases and alert miners to those harmful gases using the smart helmet they wear. These gases are transmitted to the control station via the cloud using Internet of …
Navier-Stokes Equations In One And Two Dimensions, Jon Nerdal
Navier-Stokes Equations In One And Two Dimensions, Jon Nerdal
LSU Master's Theses
The Navier-Stokes equations are an important tool in understanding and describing fluid flow. We investigate different formulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the one-dimensional case along an axis and in the two-dimensional case in a circular pipe without swirl. For the one-dimensional case we show that the velocity approximations are remarkably accurate and we suggest that understanding this simple axial behaviour is an important starting point for further exploration in higher dimensions. The complexity of the boundary is then increased with the two-dimensional case of fluid flow through the cross section of a circular pipe, where we investigate two …
Heterogeneity Of Gene Trees, Jonathan Nenye Odumegwu Unm
Heterogeneity Of Gene Trees, Jonathan Nenye Odumegwu Unm
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Multilocus phylogenetic studies often show a high degree of gene tree heterogeneity —gene trees that have different topologies from each other as well as from the species tree topology. In some cases, this can lead to studies with hundreds of loci having distinct gene tree topologies. The degree of heterogeneity is expected to increase when there is a high degree of incomplete lineage sorting due to short branches (as measured in coalescent units) in the species tree. Other potential sources of heterogeneity include other biological processes such as introgression, recombination within genes, ancestral population structure, gene duplication and loss, and …
Many Cliques In Bounded-Degree Hypergraphs, Rachel Kirsch, J. Radcliffe
Many Cliques In Bounded-Degree Hypergraphs, Rachel Kirsch, J. Radcliffe
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Recently Chase determined the maximum possible number of cliques of size t in a graph on n vertices with given maximum degree. Soon afterward, Chakraborti and Chen answered the version of this question in which we ask that the graph have m edges and fixed maximum degree (without imposing any constraint on the number of vertices). In this paper we address these problems on hypergraphs. For s-graphs with s ≥ 3 a number of issues arise that do not appear in the graph case. For instance, for general s-graphs we can assign degrees to any i-subset of the vertex set …

Robust Sensor Design For The Novel Reduced Models Of The Mead-Marcus Sandwich Beam Equation, Ahmet Aydin
Robust Sensor Design For The Novel Reduced Models Of The Mead-Marcus Sandwich Beam Equation, Ahmet Aydin
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Novel space-discretized Finite Differences-based model reductions are proposed for the partial differential equations (PDE) model of a multi-layer Mead-Marcus-type beam with (i) hinged-hinged and (ii) clamped-free boundary conditions. The PDE model describes transverse vibrations for a sandwich beam whose alternating outer elastic layers constrain viscoelastic core layers, which allow transverse shear. The major goal of this project is to design a single boundary sensor, placed at the tip of the beam, to control the overall dynamics on the beam.
For (i), it is first shown that the PDE model is exactly observable by the so-called nonharmonic Fourier series approach. However, …

On The Spectral Theory Of Linear Differential-Algebraic Operators With Periodic Coefficients, Bader Alshammari
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, the spectral theory of linear differential algebraic equations (DAEs) is considered in detail and extended to treat the weighted spectral theory which generalizes the classical theory, i.e., we develop the spectral theory for the most general DAEs: J df dt + Hf = λWf, (0.0.1) where J is a constant nonzero skew-Hermitian n×n-matrix, both H and W are dperiodic Hermitian n×n-matrices with Lebesgue measurable functions as entries, and W is positive semidefinite and invertible for a.e. t ∈ R (i.e., Lebesgue almost everywhere). Under weakest hypotheses on H and W currently known, called the local index-1 hypotheses, …
Numerical Solutions To The Robin Inverse Problem With Nonnegativity Constraints, Weifu Fang, Fu-Rong Lin
Numerical Solutions To The Robin Inverse Problem With Nonnegativity Constraints, Weifu Fang, Fu-Rong Lin
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We present iterative numerical methods for solving the inverse problem of recovering the nonnegative Robin coefficient from partial boundary measurement of the solution to the Laplace equation. Based on the boundary integral equation formulation of the problem, nonnegativity constraints in the form of a penalty term are incorporated conveniently into least-squares iteration schemes for solving the inverse problem. Numerical implementation and examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this strategy in improving recovery results.

Real-Time Data Analytics For Monitoring Electricity Consumption Using Iot Technology, Waheed Muhammad Sanya, Gaurav Bajpai, Omar Haji Kombo, Evariste Twahirwa
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Rising electricity bills as a result of climate variability and new home electrical and electronic appliances are becoming a major source of concern for most end users. Consumers are typically unaware of their household electricity consumption patterns and the costs associated with them, making proper planning and budgeting difficult. Monitoring and controlling energy consumption on appliances can reduce energy costs for end-users. The Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to provide remote monitoring and control of devices via automated monitoring and control. In this study, we propose an IoT-enabled system for monitoring and controlling energy consumption in homes to …

Digital Skills And Self-Employment Among Graduates Of Technical Higher Education Institutions In Tanzania, Charles Raphael
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Digital skills are the driving forces for innovative, inclusive and sustainable growth through innovations and digitalization which in turn stimulate job creation, alleviate poverty, reducing inequality, facilitating the delivery of goods and services. However, large number of graduates is shown to be weak in digital skills in the industry hence affect their employability including self-employment. Recently, the Technical Higher Education Institutions (THEIs) took some initiatives to instill the digital skills to their respective students. This study therefore assessed the level of competence of digital skills among graduates following the initiatives taken by the THEIs and their influence on self-employment. It …

Bloch Spectra For High Contrast Elastic Media, Jayasinghage Ruchira Nirmali Perera
Bloch Spectra For High Contrast Elastic Media, Jayasinghage Ruchira Nirmali Perera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary goal of this dissertation is to develop analytic representation formulas and power series to describe the band structure inside periodic elastic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. We use source free modes associated with structural spectra to represent the solution operator of the Lame' system inside phononic crystals. Then we obtain convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum using the representation formulas. An explicit bound on the convergence radius is given through the structural spectra of the inclusion array and the Dirichlet spectra of the inclusions. Sufficient conditions for the separation of spectral branches of the dispersion …
Analytic Solution Of 1d Diffusion-Convection Equation With Varying Boundary Conditions, Małgorzata B. Glinowiecka-Cox
Analytic Solution Of 1d Diffusion-Convection Equation With Varying Boundary Conditions, Małgorzata B. Glinowiecka-Cox
University Honors Theses
A diffusion-convection equation is a partial differential equation featuring two important physical processes. In this paper, we establish the theory of solving a 1D diffusion-convection equation, subject to homogeneous Dirichlet, Robin, or Neumann boundary conditions and a general initial condition. Firstly, we transform the diffusion-convection equation into a pure diffusion equation. Secondly, using a separation of variables technique, we obtain a general solution formula for each boundary type case, subject to transformed boundary and initial conditions. While eigenvalues in the cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions can be constructed easily, the Robin boundary condition necessitates solving a transcendental algebraic …

Differential Operators On Classical Invariant Rings Do Not Lift Modulo P, Jack Jeffries, Anurag K. Singh
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Levasseur and Stafford described the rings of differential operators on various classical invariant rings of characteristic zero; in each of the cases that they considered, the differential operators form a simple ring. Towards an attack on the simplicity of rings of differential operators on invariant rings of linearly reductive groups over the complex numbers, Smith and Van den Bergh asked if differential operators on the corresponding rings of positive prime characteristic lift to characteristic zero differential operators. We prove that, in general, this is not the case for determinantal hypersurfaces, as well as for Pfaffian and symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. We …

Analyzing Domain Of Convergence For Broyden’S Method, Michael Bonthron
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Broyden’s method is a quasi-Newton iterative method used to find roots of non-linear systems of equations. Research has shown and improved the rate of convergence for special cases and specific applications of the method. However, there is limited literature regarding the well-posedness of the method. In practice, a numerical method must reliably converge to the appropriate root. This paper will discuss the domain of attraction for the roots of a system found by using Broyden’s method. A method of approximating the radius of convergence of a root will be described which considers the largest disk centered at the root such …
