Implementation Of Hierarchical And K-Means Clustering Techniques On The Trend And Seasonality Components Of Temperature Profile Data, Emmanuel Ogedegbe
Implementation Of Hierarchical And K-Means Clustering Techniques On The Trend And Seasonality Components Of Temperature Profile Data, Emmanuel Ogedegbe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, time series decomposition techniques are used in conjunction with Kmeans clustering and Hierarchical clustering, two well-known clustering algorithms, to climate data. Their implementation and comparisons are then examined. The main objective is to identify similar climate trends and group geographical areas with similar environmental conditions. Climate data from specific places are collected and analyzed as part of the project. The time series is then split into trend, seasonality, and residual components. In order to categorize growing regions according to their climatic inclinations, the deconstructed time series are then submitted to K-means clustering and Hierarchical clustering with dynamic …
Convolution And Autoencoders Applied To Nonlinear Differential Equations, Noah Borquaye
Convolution And Autoencoders Applied To Nonlinear Differential Equations, Noah Borquaye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autoencoders, a type of artificial neural network, have gained recognition by researchers in various fields, especially machine learning due to their vast applications in data representations from inputs. Recently researchers have explored the possibility to extend the application of autoencoders to solve nonlinear differential equations. Algorithms and methods employed in an autoencoder framework include sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy), dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), Koopman operator theory and singular value decomposition (SVD). These approaches use matrix multiplication to represent linear transformation. However, machine learning algorithms often use convolution to represent linear transformations. In our work, we modify these approaches to …
An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson
An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The field of differential geometry is brimming with compelling objects, among which are warped products. These objects hold a prominent place in differential geometry and have been widely studied, as is evident in the literature. Warped products are topologically the same as the Cartesian product of two manifolds, but with distances in one of the factors in skewed. Our goal is to introduce warped product manifolds and to compute their curvature at any point. We follow recent literature and present a previously known result that classifies all flat warped products to find that there are flat examples of warped products …
Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Strong Allee Effect., Isaac Johnson
Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Strong Allee Effect., Isaac Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A protection zone model represents a patchy environment with positive growth over the protection zone and strong Allee effect growth outside the protection zone. Generally, these models are considered through the corresponding eigenvalue problem, but that has certain limitations. In this thesis, a general protection zone model is considered. This model makes no assumption on the direction of the traveling wave solution over the Strong Allee effect patch. We use phase portrait analysis of this protection zone model to draw conclusions about the existence of equilibrium solutions. We establish the existence of three types of equilibrium solutions and the necessary …
Two-Dimensional Boundary Value Problems For Quasi-Linear Hyperbolic Systems Of Second Order, Maram Alrumayh
Two-Dimensional Boundary Value Problems For Quasi-Linear Hyperbolic Systems Of Second Order, Maram Alrumayh
Theses and Dissertations
Boundary value problems in a characteristic rectangle Ω = [0, ω1] × [0, ω2] for second order quasi-linear hyperbolic systems are considered. The concept of strong well– posedness of a boundary value problem is introduced. For initial–boundary value problems there are established: (i) Necessary and sufficient conditions of strong well–posedness; (ii) Unimprovable sufficient conditions of local and global solvability; (iii) Effective sufficient conditions of solvability of Nicoletti type two–point initial– boundary value problems in case, where the righthand side of the system has arbitrary growth order in some phase variables. For nonlocal boundary value problems there are established: (i) Necessary …
Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost
Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost
All Dissertations
In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. We develop novel Langevin models for the dye linker dynamics, including rotational dynamics, based …
Applications Of Survival Estimation Under Stochastic Order To Cancer: The Three Sample Problem, Sage Vantine
Applications Of Survival Estimation Under Stochastic Order To Cancer: The Three Sample Problem, Sage Vantine
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Stochastic ordering of probability distributions holds various practical applications. However, in real-world scenarios, the empirical survival functions extracted from actual data often fail to meet the requirements of stochastic ordering. Consequently, we must devise methods to estimate these distribution curves in order to satisfy the constraint. In practical applications, such as the investigation of the time of death or the progression of diseases like cancer, we frequently observe that patients with one condition are expected to exhibit a higher likelihood of survival at all time points compared to those with a different condition. Nevertheless, when we attempt to fit a …
Experimental Analysis Of Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Bistable Mechanical Metamaterials With A Defect, Samuel R. Harre
Experimental Analysis Of Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Bistable Mechanical Metamaterials With A Defect, Samuel R. Harre
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mechanical metamaterials built up of compliant units can support the propagation of linear and nonlinear waves. A popular architecture consists of a one-dimensional chain of bistable elements connected by linear springs. This type of chain can support nonlinear transition waves that switch each element from one stable state to the other as they propagate along the chain. One way to manipulate the propagation of such waves is via introduction of a local inhomogeneity, i.e., a defect in the otherwise periodic chain. Recent analytical and numerical work has shown that based on its initial velocity, a transition wave may be reflected, …
Memory Network-Based Interpreter Of User Preferences In Content-Aware Recommender Systems, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady W. Lauw
Memory Network-Based Interpreter Of User Preferences In Content-Aware Recommender Systems, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article introduces a novel architecture for two objectives recommendation and interpretability in a unified model. We leverage textual content as a source of interpretability in content-aware recommender systems. The goal is to characterize user preferences with a set of human-understandable attributes, each is described by a single word, enabling comprehension of user interests behind item adoptions. This is achieved via a dedicated architecture, which is interpretable by design, involving two components for recommendation and interpretation. In particular, we seek an interpreter, which accepts holistic user’s representation from a recommender to output a set of activated attributes describing user preferences. …
Development Of A Physics-Informed Neural Network For Prediction Of Blood Flow, Marcello Vittorio Mattei Di Eugenio
Development Of A Physics-Informed Neural Network For Prediction Of Blood Flow, Marcello Vittorio Mattei Di Eugenio
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract—Objective: We propose a new neural network architecture that accepts point clouds and outputs 3D velocity profiles for aneurysm geometries. Methods: We generated a synthetic aneurysm 3D flow dataset using CFD and used it to train our model architecture and compare it with other popular architectures like U-net and PointNet. We incorporate tools for improving model performance such as incorporating a distance function, a physics-informed loss to enforce the law of mass conservation, and the Huber loss to learn patterns across heterogeneous velocity components of multiple dimensions. Results: The tools implemented together with our architecture achieved the best performance on …
Low Reynolds Number Locomotion Near Interfaces In Two-Fluid Media, Avriel Rowena Mae Cartwright
Low Reynolds Number Locomotion Near Interfaces In Two-Fluid Media, Avriel Rowena Mae Cartwright
Theses and Dissertations
Microorganisms often swim within complex fluid environments composed of multiple materials with very different properties. Biological locomotion, including swimming speed, is significantly impacted by the physical composition and rheology of the surrounding fluid environment, as well as the presence of phase boundaries and free interfaces, across which physical properties of the fluid media may vary greatly. Through computational simulations, we first investigate the classical Taylor’s swimming sheet problem near interfaces within multi-fluid environments using a two-fluid immersed boundary method. The accuracy of the methodology is illustrated through comparisons with analytical solutions. Our simulation results indicate that the interface dynamics and …

Differentiating By Prime Numbers, Jack Jeffries
Differentiating By Prime Numbers, Jack Jeffries
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
It is likely a fair assumption that you, the reader, are not only familiar with but even quite adept at differentiating by x. What about differentiating by 13? That certainly didn’t come up in my calculus class! From a calculus perspective, this is ridiculous: are we supposed to take a limit as 13 changes? One notion of differentiating by 13, or any other prime number, is the notion of p-derivation discovered independently by Joyal [Joy85] and Buium [Bui96]. p-derivations have been put to use in a range of applications in algebra, number theory, and arithmetic geometry. Despite the wide range …

A Primer On The Legendre Transformation, Steven J. Kilner, David L. Farnsworth
Articles
Guidance is offered for understanding and using the Legendre transformation and its associated duality among functions and curves. The genesis of this paper was encounters with colleagues and students asking about the transformation. A main feature is simplicity of exposition, while keeping in mind the purpose or application for using the transformation.

A Comparative Study On The Rheological Properties Of Upper Convected Maxwell Fluid Along A Permeable Stretched Sheet, Sara I. Abdelsalam, W. Abbas, A. M. Megahed, A. M. Said
Basic Science Engineering
The objective of this paper is to examine the flow of a non-Newtonian Maxwell fluid induced by a permeable stretching sheet in motion within a porous medium. The research incorporates the Cattaneo-Christov heat flux model to study the heat transfer process. The utilization of the Cattaneo-Christov heat flux approach becomes relevant in scenarios involving materials with high thermal conductivity or during short time intervals. Consequently, the current investigation holds significant importance. It is assumed that the viscosity of the Maxwell fluid changes exponentially as the temperature changes. The modeling of the physical phenomena being investigated takes into account the effects …

In late 2019, the emergence of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, led to the implementation of stringent measures forming the zero-COVID policy aimed at eliminating transmission. Zero COVID policy basically aimed at completely eliminating the transmission of COVID-19. However, the relaxation of this policy in late 2022 reportedly resulted in a rapid surge of COVID-19 cases. The aim of this work is to investigate the factors contributing to this outbreak using a new SEIR-type epidemic model with time-dependent level of immunity. Our model incorporates a time-dependent level of immunity considering vaccine doses administered and time-post-vaccination dependent vaccine efficacy. We find that …
Modelling Prediction Of Cities Real Estate Price Trend Using Recurrent Neural Network: A Case Of Dar Es Salaam City, Ellen Kalinga
Modelling Prediction Of Cities Real Estate Price Trend Using Recurrent Neural Network: A Case Of Dar Es Salaam City, Ellen Kalinga
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Real estate refers to a class of real property such as land and its associated infrastructure. The prediction of real estate prices in cities, which is affected by a number of parameters, is an open research problem. The lack of reliable and effective tools for price forecasting in real estate, especially in residential housing, can adversely affect investment flows and the growth of the real estate sector. Taking Tanzania as an example, the price prediction practices rely on human suggestions that are prone to personal bias and subjective to price hysteria for personal gain and impact consumer expectations. To address …
