Fitness Testing Parameters For Alpine Ski Racing, James J. Pritchard
Fitness Testing Parameters For Alpine Ski Racing, James J. Pritchard
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Alpine ski racing requires high levels of isometric, eccentric, and concentric muscle actions through wide ranges of hip, knee, and ankle mobility. The course duration of ∼ 40 seconds for slalom racing to upward of 2.5 minutes for downhill racing necessitates high levels of anaerobic endurance, aerobic power, and force production to be successful. In addition, due to the highly technical skill aspect of ski racing, neuromuscular coordination is of utmost importance. This review identifies the most effective performance testing methods for alpine ski racing, as well as highlighting their relevance to the physiological parameters of the sport.

He Effects Of Vestibular Rehabilitation On Reaction Time: A Critically Appraised Topic, Christian Miles
Sports Medicine Student Work
In the U.S, mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) account for 5-10% of all athletic injuries at the high school and collegiate levels. Following mTBI, reaction time is often delayed, which can increase risk for additional injury. Research shows that vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) for mTBI/concussion can reduce symptoms and reduce recovery time; however, research is limited on the effects of VRT on reaction time. Therefore, the purpose of this research project was to critically appraise current evidence on the effects of VRT on reaction time in patients with an mTBI or concussion. To achieve this objective, I conducted a literature …
The Effect Of Cryotherapy And Inflammation And Myofiber Regeneration Following Skeletal Muscle Injury, Noah Macniven
The Effect Of Cryotherapy And Inflammation And Myofiber Regeneration Following Skeletal Muscle Injury, Noah Macniven
Sports Medicine Student Work
Cryotherapy is a widely used modality to treat acute skeletal muscle injury. Traditionally, cryotherapy is used immediately following an injury to accelerate the healing process by decreasing pain, inflammation and secondary hypoxic injury. Recent studies conflict with this long-standing practice and have suggested that cryotherapy may actually impair the myofiber regeneration process after muscle injury due to suppression of the inflammatory process. Therefore, delaying the healing process. A critical appraisal was conducted on three studies that have examined the inflammatory markers and markers of muscle regeneration. These studies were conducted over the past five years and have examined the effects …

Alter-G® Treadmill Chamber Pressure At Three Unweighted Conditions In College Age Volunteers, Lauren Roberts, Jacqueline Santaniello
Alter-G® Treadmill Chamber Pressure At Three Unweighted Conditions In College Age Volunteers, Lauren Roberts, Jacqueline Santaniello
Transformations: Presentation Slides
Lower body positive pressure (LBPP) treadmills utilize an inflatable chamber to provide a range of unweighted conditions for specific rehabilitation or training purposes. This is achieved by pumping air into the chamber, which results in a lower body lift or unweighted condition. Creating an unweighted condition for the user lessens the impact on the lower body during treadmill exercise. Yet, little is known about internal chamber air pressure changes during unweighted conditions and its effect on arterial blood pressure (BP). The purpose of this investigation was to study changes in chamber air pressure (CAP), arterial BP, and heart rate (HR) …
The Influence Of Carbohydrate Ingestion On Peripheral And Central Fatigue During Exercise In Hypoxia: A Narrative Review, Erin Sinai
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Abstract
Hypoxia impairs aerobic performance by accelerating fatiguing processes. These processes may originate from sites either distal (peripheral) or proximal (central) to the neuromuscular junction, though these are not mutually exclusive. Peripheral mechanisms include decrements in muscle glycogen or fluctuations in intramuscular metabolites, whereas central responses commonly refer to reductions in central motor drive elicited by alterations in blood glucose and neurotransmitter concentrations as well as arterial hypoxemia. Hypoxia may accelerate both peripheral and central pathways of fatigue, with the level of hypoxia strongly dictating the degree and primary locus of impairment. As more people journey to hypoxic settings for …

Honors Thesis
The focus of this thesis is on developing an annual resistance training plan for collegiate dance with no test subjects. This project provides biomechanical, physiological, and injury analysis of collegiate dance. Based on the analysis, a research-based, linear resistance training program for the University of South Dakota Dance Team was created. The resistance training program follows basic strength and conditioning principles including specificity, overload, and periodization. Additionally, exercise selection, order, volume, and intensity were prescribed based on standards set forth by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Generally, from off-season to in-season, exercises moved from general to specific, along with …
Effects Of Continuous And Intermittent Blood Flow Restriction On Physiological Responses During Aerobic Exercise, James Brown
Effects Of Continuous And Intermittent Blood Flow Restriction On Physiological Responses During Aerobic Exercise, James Brown
Undergraduate Research Competition
Blood flow restriction (BFR) during exercise improves cardiovascular fitness with lower work-rates compared to traditional exercise, but differences in continuous (CONT-BFR) or intermittent BFR (INT-BFR) are unknown. This study examines physiological responses to light intensity with no BFR (LIIE), INT-BFR, CONT-BFR, and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE). Subjects will participate in four trials; BFR-INT, CONT-BFR, LIIE and HIIE. Trials consist of five two-minute intervals with a one-minute recovery interval. During CONT-BFR, cuffs will continuously be inflated at 60% of limb occlusion pressure; INT-BFR is similar except cuffs deflate during recovery intervals. Each trial blood pressure, cardiac output, oxygen uptake, and muscle …

Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (Ems) And Active Recovery On Blood Lactate Levels, Andrew N. Mintz
Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (Ems) And Active Recovery On Blood Lactate Levels, Andrew N. Mintz
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a method of muscle recovery used by athletes before, during, and after competition. Active recovery is arguably the most popular recovery technique after intense exercise because of how much it reduces lactate levels in the blood. Few studies have analyzed the effects of EMS and active recovery on blood lactate levels in swimmers, and none have been found on the combination of the two. Therefore, there is an insufficient amount of information linking the two methods together for the purpose of maximizing blood lactate reduction. This study sought to analyze the effects that EMS and …
