Do Flywheel Exercises Provide Eccentric-Overload Training?, Darjan Spudić, Kazunori Nosaka
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Interests in eccentric resistance exercises have been increasing in both research and practice. However, implementing eccentric resistance exercise training is often challenging due to the mechanical limitations of traditional training equipment. To address this, flywheel (FW) devices emerged as a practical alternative. FW devices are commonly considered to provide eccentric-overload training, in which the load is greater in eccentric than concentric phase. However, this is not always the case. In this article, we summarize the mechanical and physiological factors influencing the effectiveness of FW devices in achieving eccentric overload. Then, we discuss a significant limitation of FW resistance exercise in …

Free-Fall Normalised Peak Braking Velocity For Countermovement Jump Monitoring, Karol Kruczek, André Rebelo, Jason Lake, Michał Nowak
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Peak braking velocity (PBV) during the countermovement jump (CMJ) is used to describe descent strategy, but its interpretation is affected by countermovement depth. This study introduced free-fall normalised peak braking velocity (PBVFF), a dimensionless index expressing PBV relative to the displacement-specific theoretical free-fall velocity limit, and evaluated its reliability, performance associations and ranking consequences. Methods: Seventy injury-free male academy footballers (18.7 ± 1.6 years) performed three maximal hands-on-hips CMJs on dual force plates. Using retrospective observational routine monitoring data, one representative testing day per athlete was analysed. Two PBVFF variants were examined: PBVFF normalised to countermovement depth (PBVFFCMD) and …

Adding A Weight To Constrain The Trunk Increases Knee Joint Kinetics During Sidestep Cutting In Female Athletes, Daniel Kadlec, J. Jordan, Jacqueline Alderson, Sophia Nimphius
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sidestep cutting exposes the knee to high multiplanar loads that both challenge tissue capacity and provide an opportunity to develop resilience through progressive exposure. This study investigated task constraints applied at the trunk and preparatory step and changes in lower-body joint kinetics associated with ACL injury risk during sidestepping in female athletes. Twenty-one trained female athletes performed six sidestep conditions: pre-planned and unplanned sidesteps, each with and without trunk (holding ~ 5–7.5% body mass at chest level) and preparatory-step (ducking under an adjustable rope at eye height) constraints. Relative joint power at the hip, knee, and ankle was analysed using …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The single-leg countermovement jump (SL CMJ) is widely used to assess limb-specific neuromuscular function, with interpretation commonly centred on inter-limb asymmetry. However, contextualising unilateral performance relative to bilateral capacity remains less clearly defined. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to develop exploratory descriptive benchmarks for SL CMJ kinetic, kinematic, and temporal variables expressed as a percentage of bilateral CMJ performance in a heterogeneous athletic cohort. A total of 348 athletes completed bilateral and unilateral CMJs using dual force plate sampling at 1000 Hz. The best trials were selected using the modified reactive strength index (mRSI), and averaged unilateral variables were expressed …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Persistent inward currents (PICs) are known to prolong firing of limb-muscle motoneurons. Although there is immunohistochemical evidence of PIC channels in respiratory motoneurons, it is unknown whether PICs contribute to their firing prolongation. Intramuscular electromyographic signals were recorded from human inspiratory muscles to identify motor unit (MU) activity. Diaphragm MUs were identified during quiet breathing (n = 7; one female) and MUs from the 1st, 3rd, and 5th parasternal intercostal muscles during quiet (no lung volume feedback) and voluntary (triangular-shaped lung volume feedback) breathing (n = 5 males). PIC contribution to firing prolongation was estimated via quantification of firing hysteresis …

Between-Session Reliability And Sensitivity Of Force Production Characteristics Across Various Force-Time Points During The Isometric Single-Leg Long-Lever Bridge, Adam E. Sundh, Nicholas J. Ripley, A. J. Lamb, Conor J. Cantwell, Paul Comfort
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The purpose of this study was to assess the between-session reliability of peak force and early force-time variables in a unilateral isometric hamstring assessment (isometric long-lever bridge). The sample consisted of 30 collegiate male athletes (age: 19.4±1.3 years; height: 1.79±0.1 m; body mass: 80.4±10.3 kg) with no history of recent hamstring injury (<6 months) who volunteered to participate in the study. All participants performed 3 unilateral maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) with their heels on force plates and shoulders elevated 15.24 cm, while their hips were secured with a loaded barbell. Data was analyzed to assess the reliability of force values at 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 ms, and peak force (N) across three repeated sessions. Moderate-good relative and absolute reliabilities were observed across all early force-time variables with lower bound ICC values≥0.51 (0.51–0.71) and point estimate CV%≤12.65% (7.63–12.65), with moderate relative (ICC≥0.74; range 0.74–0.92) and absolute (CV%≤6.50%; range 6.48–6.50) reliability for peak force. Trivial to small effect sizes (g≤0.4) were observed between sessions. These findings suggest that the isometric single-leg long-lever bridge (SL-LLB) can be used to reliably monitor peak and rapid force generating capacities to track performance changes over time due to training adaptations as well as acute or chronic fatigue.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Human locomotion studies often require participants to self-select a preferred walking speed (PWS), yet there is no consensus or standard protocol for determining this speed. We developed a new protocol to determine PWS (TreadPWS Test). Research question: We compared the TreadPWS Test to three other common protocols in the literature (Dingwell PWS Test, Jordan PWS Test, Dal PWS Test) across a range of reliability and implementation metrics. Methods: Healthy participants (N = 20) attended two sessions within a seven-day period, during which a PWS was determined using each protocol. One test (Dal PWS Test) was conducted overground, and the …

Background: Exercise has been proposed as both a preventive and therapeutic countermeasure; however, its effectiveness across different disuse conditions and timings of implementation remains uncertain. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42021256599) searched ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane Central, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL and SciELO from inception to May 2021, with an update in March 2025. Randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials examining exercise interventions during or after muscle disuse were included according to the PICOS framework. Random-effects meta-analysis evaluated effects on muscle strength, power and mass across hospitalization, bed rest and spaceflight conditions. Effect sizes (ES) are reported as …
