Exploring Moderators Of The Effect Of High Vs. Low-To-Moderate Intensity Exercise On Cardiorespiratory Fitness During Breast Cancer Treatment – Analyses Of A Subsample From The Phys-Can Rct, Ann Christin Helgesen Bjørke, Laurien M. Buffart, Truls Raastad, Ingrid Demmelmaier, Andreas Stenling, Karin Nordin, Sveinung Berntsen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction

The results from the physical training and cancer randomized controlled trial (Phys-Can RCT) indicate that high intensity (HI) strength and endurance training during (neo-)adjuvant cancer treatment is more beneficial for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF, measured as peak oxygen uptake [VO2peak]) than low-to-moderate intensity (LMI) exercise. Adherence to the exercise intervention and demographic or clinical characteristics of patients with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant treatment may moderate the exercise intervention effect on VO2peak. In this study, the objective was to investigate whether baseline values of VO2peak, body mass index (BMI), time spent in moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity …

Elastic Tubes: The Ideal Equipment For Telehealth Exercise Medicine In The Management Of Prostate Cancer?, Georgios Mavropalias

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Prostate cancer (PCa) affects 1 in 8 men, but exercise therapy has been shown to be a very effective intervention not only to induce physiological benefits but to also reduce the side effects of cancer treatments typically administered during PCa. The COVID19 pandemic has restricted access to exercise clinics, a problem which always existed for people living in rural and remote areas. This caused many exercise physiologists and researchers to transition their clinic-based exercise to online, home-based exercise. We would like to propose that researchers and exercise physiologists should consider the use of elastic tubes in both research and the …

Although research evidence supports religiosity’s predominantly positive mental and physical health benefits to patients coping with varied health problems, there are few studies exploring the influence of religiosity on coping with sport injuries among athletes identifying with specific religions. This study examined the relationships between religiosity and the use of religious and non-religious ways of coping with sport injuries by athletes affiliated with diverse Christian denominations. Within a concurrent mixed methods design, adult athletes (N = 88) responded to an online survey asking about several religiosity factors, their most serious or challenging sport injuries, and their ways of coping …

Background: Beetroot juice (BJ) and caffeine (CAF) are considered as ergogenic aids among athletes to enhance performance, however, the ergogenic effects of BJ and CAF co-ingestion are unclear during team-sport-specific performance. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of BJ and CAF co-ingestion on team-sport-specific performance, compared with placebo (PL), BJ, and CAF alone.

Method: Sixteen semi-professional male soccer players (age: 19.8±2.2 years, body mass: 69.2±6.1 kg, height: 177.3±6.0 cm) completed four experimental trials using a randomized, double-blind study design: BJ+CAF, CAF+PL, BJ+PL, and PL+PL. Countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJAS) performance and cognitive function by Stroop Word-Color test …

Introduction: To further understand the effects of L-arginine on both its ability to enhance lactate clearance and increase overall blood flow before, during, and after exhaustive anaerobic exercise.

Methods: Twelve healthy male subjects between the ages of 18-25 first completed an initial visit where baseline data was recorded. Subjects completed three additional visits, in which they ingested either a placebo, two-gram or four-gram dose of L-arginine. Blood flow (BF) and lactate were recorded before ingestion of the treatment, 5 and 15-minutes post-ingestion prior to performing a push-up test to volitional fatigue. Immediately following the push-up test, BF and lactate …

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain Jan 2022

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is among the most common lower limb musculoskeletal injuries impacting both the general and sport populations. Even more problematic is that approximately 70% of individuals who sustain an LAS develop residual deficits. Of that subgroup, roughly 40% develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Chronic ankle instability is a clinical diagnosis defined by the presence of ongoing impairments following the initial LAS which may include perceived instability, pain, mechanical instability, and episodes of giving way during physical activity. Not all who sustain multiple ankle sprains or experience residual deficits fit the clinical diagnosis criteria for CAI; yet may …
