Background: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID 2021) data finds that in Nepal 17 percent of women between the ages of 15-49 and 30 percent of adolescent girls of age 15-19 years are underweight; and 36 percent of children under the age of 5 were stunted in Nepal in 2016.

This process improvement project was designed to improve patient visit times in the urgent care setting, thus improving throughput. Colorectal cancer continues to be the second most deadly cancer in the United States, with thousands of new cases being diagnosed each year. Comprehension of bowel preparation education is an important factor in ensuring patients follow purgative and diet instructions. Inadequate bowel preparations lead to longer procedure lengths, decreased cancer screening capabilities, and decrease patient satisfaction. Audiovisual education has been shown to positively impact patient comprehension and instruction adherence, when compared to the standard written education. Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of healthcare-acquired infection (HAI), with 75% approximately associated with urinary catheter use. The key to preventing UTIs is to avoid the use of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs). This study explores denominator data extract logic modifications to increase IUC data capture and accuracy. It is set in a 249-bed acute care, teaching hospital in the Diablo Service Area in Northern California.

Context: Clinical Nurse Leader students conducted a microsystem assessment in five crucial non-clinical departments of an urban Bay Area hospital, each playing a vital role in the organization's efficiency at different levels.

A Northern California emergency department (ED) faced increased triage inaccuracy. An analysis of 400 random ED visits from January to April 2023 discovered a 23% mistriage rate, with under- and over-triage rates at 16.25% and 6.75%, respectively. Mistriage creates an imbalance in unit acuity, leading to inappropriate staffing levels. Potential breaks in the triage process, include inaccurate triaging by the screener or triage nurses, as well as delays in the providers inputting initial orders, leaving patients waiting without appropriate care orders. Problem: A medical center in the Diablo Service Area had one of the highest rates in hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI), benchmarking with other facilities, with the project unit one of the top offenders. The patients and the medical center both suffered from the harm. Barriers to HAPI prevention included lack of patient turnings, skin assessment, and early standard wound care treatment.

Problem: Diabetic patients utilize treatments that require frequent monitoring and medication changes based on their blood sugar results. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is more commonly used for diabetes management as time in range is becoming more prevalent to measure diabetes outcomes. Many diabetic patients find CGM use more accessible than finger sticks and glucometers. In contrast, others utilize the technology to closely monitor their blood sugars for interventions throughout the day. Problem: The facility highly utilized sitters or care companions, negatively impacting the staffing plan, budget, and productivity. An average of 56 hours of care companions were used daily. This greatly exceeded the budget of 33 hours a day. Reassigning Patient Care Technicians (PCT) as care companions resulted in inadequate nurse support for patient care and increased cost for additional staffing needs. Despite this, the fall rate remained higher than the target.

Preterm births continue to cause long-term sequelae for infants worldwide. Interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that promote better outcomes can make an impact on preterm infants’ futures. The purpose of this review was to determine if kangaroo care has positive physiological effects on preterm infants in the NICU. Practice changes to enhance kangaroo care in the NICU include reducing barriers such as medical complexity and staff misconceptions as well as facilitating increased parental presence. Background: Discharge planning and education may directly influence patient outcomes, including patient satisfaction and readmission rates. Discharge processes and follow-up vary across departments and facilities. Follow-up telephone calls after patient discharge are commonly utilized; however, delivery techniques differ across healthcare areas. The aim of the journal was to organize the reflections of two undergraduate nursing students regarding the journey of navigating through summer research along with faculty. Through this reflective experience, research assistants were able to identify many benefits that come with participating in the research conduction process that should encourage other undergraduate students to involve themselves in future research. Research assistants were challenged to take on new and unknown tasks in a high-level research study, which ultimately enhanced skills for future academic success and professional careers as nurses.

Introduction: As patients recover from surgery, it has been recognized that anesthetic agents are an external risk factor for the development of acute postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium (POD) manifests as inattention with changes in perception or cognition, altered levels of consciousness, and changes in motor activity such as agitation or lethargy up to seven days after surgery. POD is linked to increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalizations and recovery, and persistent cognitive decline.
Purpose: The purpose of this integrative review was to determine which anesthetic agents decrease the risk of postoperative delirium (POD) development in adult non-cardiac surgical patients.
