Exploring Caregiver Support For Advanced Practice Nurses Following An Error, Sunnie L. Nield
Student Works
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) are a growing population of employed individuals within the healthcare system, working in outpatient and inpatient settings. Like other healthcare professionals, nurse practitioners can and do make errors while practicing. Nevertheless, little to no research has focused on them. This research aimed to better understand nurse practitioners’ attitudes towards error approach, perception, and cause using the Medical Error Attitude Scale (MEAS). Additional purposes included the further exploration of APRNs' experiences following an error and support they may or may not receive. A convenience sample of ARPNs licensed in Utah was sent an electronic survey via …

Improving Provider Ordered Annual Breast Cancer Screening In Primary Care, Alexis Manzella
DNP Projects
Significance and Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women throughout the United States. Specifically, the state of Connecticut has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the country. Multiple evidence-based organizations have developed specific guidelines for screening in clinical practice. These guidelines specify when a woman should be screened and how frequently. A project was put in place at a FQHC in Connecticut to increase the number of breast cancer screenings ordered, based on clinical guidelines. Evidence supported the use of provider education to increase the number of mammograms ordered (Marks,2022).
Purpose: Increase the number …

Adoption Of Ventilator-Associated Event Bundle In Adult Critical Care Population, Renee Christine Hayes
Adoption Of Ventilator-Associated Event Bundle In Adult Critical Care Population, Renee Christine Hayes
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem: The utilization of mechanical ventilatory support is a periodic necessity within critical care. One significant aspect of mechanical ventilatory health management focuses on preventing the sequela of ventilator-associated events (VAE). The societal impact of VAE occurrences weighs heavily on the already burdened registered nurse (RN), health care providers including physicians and advanced practice providers, healthcare system, and overall patient and family wellbeing. Purpose: This project examined if the addition of a ventilator associated event bundle (VB) reduces the occurrence of VAE within the adult patient population requiring mechanical ventilation for longer than 48 hours. Methods: Metric review of VAE …

Reinke, Mahsa Mousavi-Derazmahalleh, Johan Garssen, Maria C. Jenmalm, Ravisha Srinivasjois, Desiree Silva, Jeffrey Keelan, Susan L. Prescott, Debra J. Palmer, Claus T. Christophersen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background & aims: Improving maternal gut health in pregnancy and lactation is a potential strategy to improve immune and metabolic health in offspring and curtail the rising rates of inflammatory diseases linked to alterations in gut microbiota. Here, we investigate the effects of a maternal prebiotic supplement (galacto-oligosaccharides and fructo-oligosaccharides), ingested daily from < 21 weeks' gestation to six months’ post-partum, in a double-blinded, randomised placebo-controlled trial. Methods: Stool samples were collected at multiple timepoints from 74 mother–infant pairs as part of a larger, double-blinded, randomised controlled allergy intervention trial. The participants were randomised to one of two groups; with one group receiving 14.2 g per day of prebiotic powder (galacto-oligosaccharides GOS and fructo-oligosaccharides FOS in ratio 9:1), and the other receiving a placebo powder consisting of 8.7 g per day of maltodextrin. The faecal microbiota of both mother and infants were assessed based on the analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA gene (V4 region) sequences, and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations in stool. Results: Significant differences in the maternal microbiota profiles between baseline and either 28-weeks’ or 36-weeks’ gestation were found in the prebiotic supplemented women. Infant microbial beta-diversity also significantly differed between prebiotic and placebo groups at 12-months of age. Supplementation was associated with increased abundance of commensal Bifidobacteria in the maternal microbiota, and a reduction in the abundance of Negativicutes in both maternal and infant microbiota. There were also changes in SCFA concentrations with maternal prebiotics supplementation, including significant differences in acetic acid concentration between intervention and control groups from 20 to 28-weeks’ gestation. Conclusion: Maternal prebiotic supplementation of 14.2 g per day GOS/FOS was found to favourably modify both the maternal and the developing infant gut microbiome. These results build on our understanding of the importance of maternal diet during pregnancy, and indicate that it is possible to intervene and modify the development of the infant microbiome by dietary modulation of the maternal gut microbiome.

Assessing Lung Cancer Screening Protocols And Outcomes: A Comparative Analysis Between Indonesia And The United States, Priscilla Sitorus
Nursing | Student Research Posters
After losing a loved one to lung cancer, it can be difficult to process, especially when the diagnosis could have been made earlier. However, some may struggle to trust a healthcare system when screening protocols and care vary significantly, to the extent that it may seem unclear. Amongst both men and women, lung cancer is the worldwide leading cause of cancer-related mortality (World Health Organization, 2023), thus further creating a considerable amount of challenges that not only takes part in communities, but the overall healthcare system. Despite the increasing rate of lung cancer, Indonesia has limited screening programs available for …

The Effect Of A Positive Work Culture In Emergency Service Nurses: An Ebp Proposal, Brianna M. Fitzgerald
MSN Capstone Projects
This paper aims to address the spirit of inquiry of the effect a safe work environment has on compassion fatigue in nurses in the emergency department (ED). The World Health Organization promotes an eager approach to the battle of compassion fatigue in frontline healthcare workers, stating, "Unless this is addressed, it will further add to the global nursing workforce shortage." (Stafford et al., 2022, p. 1853). Unfortunately, 69% of nurses under the age of 25 report burnout from working conditions (American Nurses Association, 2022). Improving nurses' job satisfaction and motivation levels is necessary to increase the effectiveness of nursing services …

Implementation Of A Human Trafficking Screening Tool In An Immigrant Services Organization, Cassandra Cooper
Implementation Of A Human Trafficking Screening Tool In An Immigrant Services Organization, Cassandra Cooper
DNP Projects
Background
Human trafficking (HT) is a public health problem that advances the spread of disease and mental health issues and affects vulnerable populations including immigrants. HT screening tools are more reliable than clinical judgment in identifying HT victims, as even victims themselves are sometimes unaware of their own victimhood. To reduce the instances of victims being missed, HT screening tools have been validated to identify victims without the influence of personal bias.
Project Goals
1. Choose and implement a HT education module for staff.
2. Implement the AHTST for all new arrivals and from the months of November 2023 through …
