Racial Disparities In Adherence To Diabetes Management Guidelines: The Impact Of Immigration Status Among Asian Populations In The U.S., Aliya Kuerban Phd, Fnp-Bc, Ms, Ma, Rn, Yuging Zhang
Nursing: Faculty Presentations
Background/Purpose
Asian populations in the U.S. demonstrate lower adherence to diabetes management guidelines compared to other racial groups. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends a minimum of two annual A1C tests to manage diabetes effectively. This study examines racial disparities in adherence to these guidelines, focusing on the impact of immigration-related factors and patient perceptions of provider communication. The findings aim to identify barriers and inform strategies to enhance diabetes management and improve patient-provider interactions in underserved communities.
Theoretical/Conceptual Framework
This study employs a modified patient-provider communication model as its theoretical framework, emphasizing how effective communication can influence adherence to …

A Mixed Methods Study: The Influence Of Educational Preparation, Clinical Experience, And Orientation On Nursing Professional Development Role Transition Experience, Lauren Elizabeth Moran
A Mixed Methods Study: The Influence Of Educational Preparation, Clinical Experience, And Orientation On Nursing Professional Development Role Transition Experience, Lauren Elizabeth Moran
Theses & Dissertations
This study explored the role transition experiences of novice Nursing Professional Development (NPD) practitioners, examining how educational preparation, clinical experience, and orientation programs influence successful adaptation. NPD practitioners are essential in facilitating learning, mentoring staff, and advancing nursing excellence; however, transitions from clinical nurse to NPD practitioner are often marked by role ambiguity, limited confidence, and insufficient preparation. Despite the importance of this role, research on novice NPD practitioners’ transition experiences remains limited. This mixed-methods explanatory sequential study, guided by the Nurse Educator Transition (NET) model and From Novice to Expert frameworks, explored factors influencing the role transition of novice …
Factors Influencing Emergency Department Utilization Among Heart Failure Patients In The Home Health Care Setting: A Secondary Data Analysis, Lynette Ramlogan
Factors Influencing Emergency Department Utilization Among Heart Failure Patients In The Home Health Care Setting: A Secondary Data Analysis, Lynette Ramlogan
Theses & Dissertations
Heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition affecting over 6 million adults in the United States and remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, contributing to approximately 380,000 deaths annually. Disparities in health outcomes for individuals with heart failure are further exacerbated by social determinants of health (SDoH), including socioeconomic status, healthcare accessibility, and availability of social support, particularly among vulnerable populations. Insurance coverage plays a critical role in influencing access to care, treatment adherence, and overall health outcomes among patients with heart failure. For patients receiving home health care (HHC) services, limited caregiver support and inadequate socioeconomic resources …

Reducing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries: A Quality Improvement Project Implementing A Visual Reminder System In The Intensive Care Unit, Henry H. Remschel Iii
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Purpose
This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) by 10% in an intensive care unit through the implementation of a skin risk assessment form and a visual reminder system.
Background
Hospital-acquired pressure injuries negatively impact patient outcomes and can increase costs associated with a hospital stay. Studies have shown that visual reminders can improve nursing intervention compliance and correlate with improved patient outcomes.
Methodology
The project implemented a skin-risk assessment form to identify patients at risk for developing pressure injuries during their hospital stay. For high-risk patients, a “High Skin Risk” magnet was placed outside …
A Framework For Mixed Reality Within Healthcare Education, Benyamin Ebadinia
A Framework For Mixed Reality Within Healthcare Education, Benyamin Ebadinia
Theses
Understanding complex three-dimensional systems and spatial relationships is a recurring difficulty in healthcare education, where students are often expected to reason about internal structures and multi-system processes from 2D diagrams, textbook figures, and static mannequins. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and mixed-methods evaluation of Systems Simulation, a reusable mixed reality (MR) application intended to help undergraduate nursing students explore human anatomy and pathophysiology using immersive 3D visualization.
Built in C# with the StereoKit framework for Microsoft HoloLens 2, Systems Simulation organizes nine anatomical body systems within a shared application. Learners can select a system, anchor the model in their …

Investigating The Impact Of Game-Based Immersive Learning On Nursing Students' Communication Skills And Attitudes Toward Serving In Underserved Communities, Lin Zhong, Debra Penrod, Brandon Hirsch, Kelli Whittington
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Many nursing education programs incorporated service learning, particularly community immersion, into the curriculum to improve students’ communication skills and foster favorable attitudes towards caring underserved populations who face health disparities delivery. However, the teaching modality in community immersion is still lecturing sessions. This traditional teaching modality could not fully address the learning preferences of the new generation of nursing students, who are enthusiastic consumers of technology and active participants in the digital world. There is a demand of innovative teaching strategies, such as game-based learning (GBL), to engage the new generation of nursing students. Unfortunately, empirical studies of exploring the …

Implementing A Routine Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (Phq-9) Screening Bundle For Adults (18-65 Years) Scheduled For A Psychiatric Evaluation, Olivier Bertrand Djoumessi
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Depression affects 21 million American adults (8.4%), yet only 28% receive appropriate screening. In Texas, where 20.8% of adults experience depression, systematic screening remains inconsistent. This quality improvement project addressed a critical gap at an outpatient mental health clinic in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening occurred in only 40% of psychiatric evaluations, resulting in missed diagnoses and inconsistent treatment. Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, the project implemented a comprehensive PHQ-9 screening bundle consisting of staff training, electronic health record integration, and a treatment algorithm based on severity thresholds. The intervention targeted adults, aged 18-65, scheduled for …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This DNP Project aimed to influence a process change within the nursing faculty advising process for pre-licensure nursing students at the project site. The clinical site mandates faculty to meet with their assigned advisees twice per academic semester for advising. However, no guidelines have been provided by the educational institution on items to cover during these advising meetings. A mixed method approach, pre- and post-survey design with quantitative and qualitative data collection was utilized for this project. The major findings from this DNP project support evidence from the literature review that include the need for a structured faculty advising process, …

Introduction: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is neurological disease caused by the deprivation of oxygen and blood flow to the brain during the developmentally-critical perinatal period. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the standard of care treatment for HIE, though cognitive deficits can persistent throughout life despite treatment. The nature of these deficits, and the impacts of TH and sex are not well understood, and this presents a key barrier in the development of novel therapeutics.
Methods: The goal of this study was to enhance the characterization and measurement of cognitive outcomes with tasks that measure spontaneous behaviors in a rodent models of …

This study explores whether and how the co-creation of an international university course on workplace violence served as a site of transformative learning for us as nursing educators across Sweden, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. Using collaborative autoethnography, our team of six faculty members critically reflected on pedagogical assumptions, educator identities, and experiences of cross-cultural collaboration. The data comprised written reflections, meeting transcripts, and observational notes. Through this process, our pedagogical approaches and professional identities were reshaped, shifting from content deliverers to reflective co-learners within the cross-cultural partnership. Our analysis highlights the interplay of cultural negotiation, logistical frictions, and unspoken yet influential …
A Quality Improvement Project: Increasing Nurse Satisfaction With Patient Educational Material Related To Pain Management Options During Labor, Madison Grant
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND:
Pain management is a large portion of what nurses manage during the patient’s time on the labor and delivery unit. The primary forms of pain management that is available to women during this time includes epidurals, nitrous oxide, stadol/diphenhydramine, and nonpharmacological options such as breathing techniques. It is essential that patients are aware of all pain management options prior to entering the unit for delivery, however sometimes nurses have to help to close the educational gap.
LOCAL PROBLEM:
Within the microsystem, it was acknowledged that many patients lacked the education of their pain management options prior to delivery which …

Improving Nurse Knowledge And Attitudes Through Education On Integrative Pain Management In A Medical-Surgical Unit: A Quality Improvement Project, Samantha Hamilton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Pain management in medical-surgical microsystems is complex, with many patients experiencing acute and chronic pain that can be difficult to control. Nurses often receive limited continuing education on integrative and comprehensive pain management strategies, highlighting a need to improve their knowledge and attitudes toward evidence-based, multimodal approaches.
Local Problem: Nurses in this 38-bed medical-surgical microsystem identified a gap in education related to integrative pain management strategies. This may lead to a reliance on pharmacological interventions and missed opportunities for holistic, patient-centered care
Methods: A 25-day quality improvement project was conducted using an asynchronous educational PowerPoint on integrative …
