History tells us that the nursing done in the early hospitals in the United States, a hundred years ago, was of the poorest possible type, excluding that of the religious orders. The non-sectarian hospitals were public institutions and most of the nursing was done by inmates or by the very poorest class of individuals, who could obtain no other work, and were compelled to earn a meagre livelihood in this manner. This loose leaf notebook contains handwritten lecture notes by a student who took a series of nursing courses in 1924 and 1925. The name on the front cover is L. Bacon. On the very first page, L. Bacon noted that the courses regarded "Practical Nursing: Theory and Practice of Nursing." The notes are extremely practical: how to make a patient's bed, how to take a patient's pulse, how to give an injection, etc.

The notebook is definitely local to Grand Forks, as a newspaper clipping in its pages references an alumnae bazaar at Kappa Alpha Theta on Saturday, November 29, …

The World War I Diary of Maude Essig depicts her experiences as a nurse in Base Hospital #32 overseas in Contrexeville, France. Maude saw patients from many countries in all conditions while there, some having sustained mustard gas burns, gun shot wounds, and shrapnel lodging. She depicts life in and out of the hospital and gives major insight into the life of a nurse during war.
